The Crescent Quartet (Alicia Edelberg, Nancy McAlhany, Jill Jaffe and Maxine Neuman) is comprised of some of New York City's finest musicians. The Quartet has performed in the USA, Germany, France and Mexico, and has been broadcast throughout the world. They appear in the feature film "Nighthawks".

The Alard Quartet (Joanne Zagst, Donald Hopkins, Raymond Page, and Leonard Feldman), acclaimed by audiences on four continents, was for many years affiliated with Pennsylvania State University. They are now retired.

Belgian composer Lucie Vellère (1896-1966) composed 100 works and won the "Prix du Brabant" and an award from the American Section of the International Council for Women.

Sarah Aderholdt (b.1955) received degrees from the University of North Carolina and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Her works have been performed in the USA, Switzerland, Germany and Poland.

Ruth Schonthal (b.1924) studied at Yale University with Paul Hindemith. Her works have been performed by the Orchestra Nacional de la Universidad de Mexico, Israel Philharmonic, and New Orchestra of Westchester, among others.

American composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) was strongly influenced by German late Romantic music, but also experimented with the fusion of folk and art music. This work incorporates melodies from Franz Boas's "The Central Eskimo", published by the Smithsonian.

Priaulx Rainier (1903-1986) grew up near Zululand. She studied at the South African College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was later appointed Professor of Composition. The BBC recorded and broadcast her complete chamber music.

Commendable song selection, but..........2003-05-28

I've never liked the NBA player's quote that the trouble with women's basketball is that, with very few exceptions, they can't/don't/won't "take it to the hoop and stick it." But listening to this disc gives me an eerily similar feeling about Libana, and in that respect I find it a most frustrating listen. While the arrangements of these well-chosen songs are often interesting--particularly some of the mildly dissonant a capella passages--the performance of the material comes across as limp. The first sign of trouble comes in the opening track, the Finnish "Oi Dai." Varttina's version is just percussive enough to give it the visceral strength it needs, but this nearly note-perfect transcription of the Varttina arrangement suffers in comparison, much more weakly projected. I get the sense that the singers of Libana are content to sing along with the music, rather than forcefully putting across their own feelings.

Gentleness is a virtue too often overlooked in music, but certainly the Balkan songs presented here demand a quality of toughness that Libana doesn't demonstrate on this CD. Their instrumental and vocal skills, along with their choice of source material, speak fluently for themselves. But ultimately the limp projection makes even these expert musicians sound amateurish, and even the accurate traditional vocal flourishes only make the musicians of Libana sound like they're trying to show off--and almost but not quite delivering.

What makes this music so sexy? Well, there is one tract - you'll know the one - which has three distinctive sections with very rhythmic beats that would turn on the purest virgin...enjoy!

soothing. The instruments are unique and offer something different and interesting to the singing. Each song is unique. This is great back ground or medatative music that could have a variety of other uses. I have used it as background music for my biweekly massages. It is a nice break from Celtic or Mexican String guitar music. Though it is a little too much for music to study to. The music is from all over the world, but it has a very east indian, gypsy, quality to it. I think you will enjoy it very much.

Large Group Cecil.......2002-08-27

Winged Serpents Sliding Quadrants) is the first time that Cecil has recorded with a large group since the 60's and as such is a very important release. Add to that the fact that this disc contains some of Taylor's most inspired work and this is a must have CD for avant-garde jazz fans.

The ensemble consists of 7 horns and rhythm section with two drummers. The pieces concentrate on wild group improvisation, but as usual with Taylor, this is not "free" improvisation as in Coltrane's Ascension. Rather, the music is carefully structured around melodic cells, and scales derived from the blues and synthetic sources.

Taht is an all out collective imrpovisation based on a short riff that reminds me of something that Mingus might have composed. I agree with Michael Richmond that the opening of Cun - Un - Un - Un - An wears out it's welcome quickly. I've never been a great fan of Taylor's experiments with spoken word music. but the rest of the cut is quite good.

The stand out for me on this album is Womb Waters. The work starts out very much like other Taylor pieces, with a small cell repeated over and over in the horns in a free time, leading to some pretty frenetic collective blowing. But it ends with an honest to God ballad based on the opening melody. Here Taylor gets almost Ellingtonian, with well defined chord changes and a soulful melody intoned in the horns. And the tightness of structure in this piece is evidenced throughout. It is a marvelous work, one of Taylor's best pieces on disc since Enter Evening from Unit Structures.

Overall, this is a major disc by Taylor, one that should be aquired by every fan. The ensemble is expert and the musical selections are some of the best of Taylor's career. Highly recommended to fans of this progressive artist.

Behold The "Winged Serpent".......2000-09-22

In the vast discography of jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, "Winged Serpents (Sliding Quadrants)" is a rare look at this unique composer/improviser's music in a large group setting. Recorded in 1984, this session features an extended frontline of two trumpets (Enrico Rava and Tomasz Stanko), two tenor saxes (Frank Wright and John Tchicai), alto sax (Cecil Taylor Unit regular Jimmy Lyons), baritone sax (Gunter Hampel) and bassoon (Karen Borca). Joining those seven and Taylor in the rhythm section are William Parker on bass, and two drummers -- Rashid Bakr and Andre Martinez. With all of these musicians, it comes as no surprise that this disc is characterized by boisterous collective improvisation, and rich, full, intricate horn textures. The opening of the first track "Taht" has always reminded me of John Coltrane's "Ascension" and it builds to similar lofty heights. "Womb Waters" covers the same exploratory territory and features some ecstatic horn collaborations. The bells and chants in the first part of "Cun-Un" have always left me a bit cold, but the brief, warped funk groove at the song's conclusion is always fun. The title track concludes the disc and it is the album's most complex and rewarding tune. A final note, this CD is remarkably well recorded, with each of the horns captured in their own distinct space with clear, bright, crisp clarity -- a necessity considering Taylor's dense musical style. Fans of Taylor's music should not overlook the "Winged Serpent."

I stumbled upon this cd while browsing amazon. It looked good so I had a listen to some songs. It seemed good so I purchased it and WOW!!!! I highly recommend this mix of latin and good old jazz. Every single song is great!! Run don't walk to order this cd. You will not be disappointed.

Francesca Ancarola, with an espectacular voice, has build on this record a bridge between the chilean traditional music and the jazz music, and also she has "blend" the languages to keep the sense of the lyrics, and transport its poetic adventure to new ears. Each song is an invitation, each musical arrange is a special mixture to enjoy and share...
Francesca have five previous productions in her country. She has explore differents musical styles: traditionals rythms from Chile, Peru, Mexico and Brazil, and also author-music (Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Djavan, etc.).
