Amazon.com's Best of 1999
After having covered the sensual nightclub material of Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, Evora left us wondering where she could possibly go next. She returned with Café Atlantico, blowing us away with her luscious voice and widened repertoire of Brazilian- and Cuban-influenced music. With touches of string accompaniment, Evora's music dances with light energy and woos with the classic morna sound, leaving us to ponder what amazing music she'll master on her next album. --Karen K. HuggAmazon.com
Unlike Mar Azul or earlier releases Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, which were largely collections of the Portuguese-influenced song form called morna, Café Atlantico finds Evora singing Cuban and Brazilian traditionals. Evora's voice is as smooth as ever, but it's a little odd to hear her croon to a bolero or danzon. Still, the connection fits snugly as this release is a tribute to Evora's hometown of Mindelo, a port on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente where sailors from Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, and the Caribbean cross-pollinated the music of Cape Verde. On Café Atlantico Evora croons with her usual beauty, poise, and melancholia. Thankfully, instrumental accompaniment again includes the piano and acoustic guitar and bass, but with the flavorful addition of light (and only occasional) orchestral accompaniment, which highlights the creamy richness of this lovely Latin music. Café Atlantico takes a tasteful, innovative step in broadening Evora's repertoire, and its plaintive grace and relaxed romanticism emphasizes what the world has now come to realize: Cesaria Evora is the greatest living singer of our time. --Karen KarleskiCustomer Reviews:

For more than 30 years, South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo has infused its township sound of Isicathamiya with rich gospel harmonies. LBM's unique sound was brought to American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's landmark Graceland, and the group has toured and recorded tirelessly since. Long Walk To Freedom is a new retrospective in which the group rerecords new versions of songs from throughout its career with help from such guests as Emmylou Harris, Sarah McLachlan, Taj Mahal, and Zap Mama as well as several popular countrymen. As with the Simon album, the North American guests' voices fit hand-in-glove with the group's warm harmonies. Highlights include "Nomathemba," which was the band's first hit in 1973, the popular "Hello My Baby," and the Graceland tunes "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and "Homeless." Though ostensibly a career retrospective, this new recording actually proves that Ladysmith Black Mambazo has never sounded better. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Whether they are singing hymns or secular songs, Ladysmith Black Mambazo always raise their voices in glorious harmony. They are the unmatched masters of the South African a cappella form known as isicathamiya or mbube, and this CD demonstrates their vocal prowess. The Zulu songs are ornamented by trills, yips, humming, and tra-la-las and punctuated by the rhythmic clicks that are particular to the language. The English-language songs instruct and advise on the fine moral points of human relationships. While the mbube song form lends a certain similarity to the pieces, this group is so good that the music never seems redundant, and the generous selection of 16 songs seems to go by too quickly. --Jeff GrubbCustomer Reviews:

As on their now-celebrated debut album, Voices From Heaven, this miraculous ensemble from Johannesburg's notorious/iconic Soweto township moves between Anglican-inspired and gospel-tinged hymns plus assorted home-wrought styles. The selections, performed in four languages including English, are either presented in a cappella arrangements, backed by a guitar band with percussion or wreathed in clapping, stomping and whistles. Soloists Sipokazi Luzipo and Vincent Jiyane are especial stand-outs; the latter's performance on "Weeping" could wring tears from a stone. Other unforgettable moments include "Noyana" and "Thapelo" but it is the more well-known tunes that fully reveal the ensemble's power to transform. "Oh Happy Day," "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot," "Khumbaya" and Solomon Linda's deathless "Mbube (aka "Wimoweh" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") are resuscitated and refreshed, as is "Nkosi Sikele'iAfrika," South Africa's soaring national anthem. The atmosphere, while moving, is in no way sad or depressing. In fact, other than the awe-inspiring beauty of the singing, which seems to build a rainbow bridge between this world and the next, the overwhelming impression is of upbeat courage, dignity, grace and hope. --Christina RodenAbout the Artist

The jewel in the crown in the Music for Little People catalog, Gift of the Tortoise is stunning in its beauty and uncompromising in its delivery of excellence. Expressed from the viewpoint of a very wise tortoise, the lush harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are supported by renowned guitarist Johnny Clegg and storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, creating a captivating blend of Zulu lore, South African history, and that country's brave optimism in the post-Apartheid era. As the drama unfolds, the listener is drawn into the spell cast by this marvelous group of players as they carry out the chant of ancestral names on "Two Shelleni," the folk legend of the "Boy Who Turned into a Cat," and the classic "Mbube (the Lion Sleeps Tonight)." --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

His music is some of the most uplifting music I have ever listened to.
If you ever have a chance to see him in concert, you wouldn't be dissappointed!
The Johnny we love is back!.......2006-12-20
The most single-worthy song is "The Revolution will eat its children". If you can ignore for a minute the oddness of the title, it has a catchy rhythm and a very hip "echo" effect on the word "gun", which I don't think I've ever heard in any song before. The song deserves to be the first single released, to remind listeners that Johnny is back in fine form. Other irresistable songs include "Thamela", "Makhabeleni", "Utshani Obulele" (my personal favourite song on this cd), and "Four Box Square" (about the relative sameness of the towns/cities he travels in on tour). The other single worthy songs are "I Don't Want to Be Away" (where he laments about being away from his wife while touring with his band) and "Locked and Loaded" (which sounds like a violent song, but is really about a man making the commitment to marriage). Both songs are quite catchy and would play well on radio, even the rather narrow minded American ones.
In addition to 15 new songs, we get to hear Johnny sing in Afrikaans ("Thamela--Die son trek water") and French ("Faut pas baisser les bras") for the first time. And the classic Johnny sound I mentioned earlier? He has that "ho-hum-oh-hum" chant going on in one of his songs that is easily recognizeable to older songs of his. All of this was missing on his last cd, when he experimented with a new sound (similar to Madonna's post Evita sound). All I can say is, welcome back, Johnny! I never get tired of his "old sound" because he finds ways of making it sound fresh again. If I wanted to hear Madonna-esque melodies, I'd buy her cds, but Johnny has something unique that no one else can offer, so if Johnny no longer offers that unique sound, what are fans left with? So, please support Johnny by getting this CD! And if he tours North America to promote this cd, go see his tour. You won't regret it. It'll be the most energized show you'll ever see.
Johnny is back.......2006-12-19
One minor quibble: why are all the pictures of Johnny? I want to see Andy, Barry, Mandisa!

As with other Ellipsis Arts releases, African Lullaby is more than a stellar music collection. Its delightful liner notes provide ample context for these "love songs for children" and the collection's innovative earth-friendly packaging is a work of art unto itself. Commencing with the bewitching Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "Thula Mtwana" sets the tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and peace, and is followed by a baker's dozen that reflect the gentle rhythms of an abundantly diverse continent. "Kounandu Deni" marries the dancing melody of Malian guitar and African harp with lyrics of paternal providence. Broadway's Sarafina! and The Lion King cast member Ntomb'khona Dlamini wails soulfully on "Thula Thula," and "Chitsidzo" is a mystical reverie of parental love and spousal longing accompanied by the intense beauty of a mbira (thumb piano). Standing head and shoulders above others in its class, African Lullaby is testimony to the awesome power of music. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description

Vusi Mahlasela was born in 1965 and grew up in the Mamelodi township outside Pretoria, South Africa. He assembled his first guitars from discarded cooking-oil cans with wire strings, but his talent was so overwhelming that the novelist Nadine Gordimer arranged for the boy's formal music education. By the 1980s, his unrelenting courage in the face of government oppression became a factor in the downfall of apartheid. Often described as a folk singer, his music is indeed deeply rooted in Zulu traditions like mbube (a cappella vocals) and mbaqanga (township pop), but there are also touches of jazz (the local variety and from the USA), reggae, and plenty of judiciously applied Western mainstream quotes. For album number six, his second for Dave Matthews's ATO label, the dulcet-voiced singer-activist has brought on an impressive roster of guest stars. Matthews himself appears on track seven, "Sower of Words," and bows gracefully to Mahlasela's vision, as do, each in their own turn, Jem, Derek Trucks, Xavier Rudd, and--not surprisingly--Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Despite the high-octane sitters-in, a preponderance of English-language lyrics, and slick production values, the bandleader's guitar and voice remain the central focus of the mix, and thus the project succeeds brilliantly. Hit pick: a raucously sloppy, engagingly silly cover of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata." --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Shining Star.......2007-07-24
His "Guiding Star" is a haunting collection of songs, many of them about the suffering under apartheid. His "Chamber of Justice" is a haunting reggae-styled song about the nature of good and evil. "Sower of Words",a touching duet with Dave Matthews,is a tribute to a South African poet who stood up to apartheid. Dave Matthews, whose voice usually grates cheese, provides a soft, thoughtful accompaniment. "Song for Thandi" is about a pregnant woman persecuted during apartheid who was nearly forced to kill herself--but chose life because of the life within her. There are deeply spiritual songs such as "River Jordan","Heaven in my Heart" and "Thula Mama." There are great collaborations with Derek Trucks&the Welsh singer-songwriter Jem.The bonus track,a cover of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata",is a joyous dance song that catches the spirit of the original. Warning:this song may cause toe-tapping.
As a whole,"Guiding Star" is a brilliant combination of electrifying acoustic guitar playing and powerful singing. Dave Matthews rightly compares Vusi Mahlasela to Neil Young,Bob Marley,Miles Davis&Marvin Gaye. The album is great music for great causes-a portion of the proceeds go to Nelson Mandela's HIV/AIDS global awareness campaign and Vusi Mahlasela's Music Development Foundation.
While this album is relatively mainstream,it's a perfect introduction to South African music. It complements Angelique Kidjo's "Djin Djin" and Putumayo's "Acoustic Africa." It could be called "Vusi Mahlasela:Unplugged." It's hardly overproduced;it's the guitar and The Voice-a perfect sonic pairing.

Great CD.......2007-03-23
"Jabula" ranks up there close to "When You Come Back" as one of my favorite Vusi songs. He really got the South African sound in there, but I'm also really hearing a Celtic infuence in the drumming, pretty amazing how he pulled it off, the best song I've heard released in 2007, and probably will remain that way. I also loved "Moleko" and it's rythm. "Chamber of Justice" is pretty cool, has a reggaeish sound rythym to it, definately something you could throw into a either a reggae mix or African mix and it would fit right in with both.
Every song is masterfully crafted, Vusi and his guests are top notch performers. My only not 100% positive comment on this is that some of the songs get a little "Dave Mathewish" sounding, which is not a complaint, but I was hoping to hear more of the South African sound like I did on "Voice". While I gave it 5 stars, I was debating to give it 4 because of this, but I figured this was personal preference and shouldn't reflect the quality of the music which is well deserving of 5 stars.

In 1968, a little-known South African-born trumpeter and flugelhornist named Hugh Masakela released an instrumental single called "Grazing in the Grass." Its catchy, percussive rhythms and jazzy horn lines made it an international hit, and turned Masakela into an overnight star. This compilation contains 14 of Masakela's most celebrated tracks recorded from the '60s to the '90s. These "greatest hits" show how Masakela ingeniously blends a fiery, post-bop trumpet style with African-American R&B and African rhythms, and long before the term "world music" came into vogue. Included on this collection is the Cuban cha-cha laced "Vasco Da Gama," the melancholy Miriam Makeba classic, "Strawberries," and the anti-apartheid anthem, "Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)." Hugh Masakela has been, and will continue to be, an importance force in the world of music. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:
