5 out of 5 stars squeaky French pop superstar at her best.......2007-04-05

This is a great collection with all of her important singles.

4 out of 5 stars France Gall: "Ye-Ye Girl of the 1960's".......2006-01-23

I liked this album a lot. Though France Gall doesn't have a strong voice, she does a good job of providing some interesting singing. She was one of the "Ye-Ye" girls of the 1960's.

The "Ye-Ye Girls" were not rockers like a Nancy Sinatra or even Lesley Gore. They didn't pretend to be singers, but mostly good looking girls who tried to vocalize.

France Gall does her best work on such delights as "Sacre Charlemagne" in which she talks about the misfortune of having to go to school and blames it on Charlemagne!!

Songs like "Bebe Requin" and "Baby Pop" are a lot of fun too.
Her version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Les Sucettes" supposedly had a sexual double meaning and sports a catchy tune.

"L'Amerique" is Gall's vision of what the United States represented to French teenagers.

This is a fun album despite Gall being out-of-tune on some songs.
The recording has good sound quality and is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, French and not what you find on other compilations!.......2004-12-31

They had me hooked on this France Gall collection sampling the title track sound byte when I heard "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son" which (if it translates to another tune - my not speaking French) is a cover of one of my all-time favorite "Twinkle" tunes: "Lonely Singing Doll"! Outside of that, the other songs in this collection don't seem to be covers of anything else, so it's always pleasing to me as a collector to find some "new" material from the 60s I hadn't heard before! France Gall is (agreeably to other posters) both childlike and "Ye-Ye", but I happen to enjoy that. This collection to me doesn't let the listener down even on the lesser things.

4 out of 5 stars Nice 60's collection.......2001-07-11

This CD contains a nice collection of France Galle's songs of the 60's. I chose it because it has some of my favorite oldies including "Laisse tomber les filles", "N'ecoute pas les idoles", and "Nous ne sommes pas des anges". But with 23 songs on one CD, it is apt to include some so-so songs, too. I enjoy France Galle's uniquely girlish delicate voice and her happy youthful style that is quite melodious.

5 out of 5 stars charm.......2001-06-22

Actually, I have the 4-CD box set of which this is a selection. That's how much I like this stuff. Yeah, there are some real duds (eg "Sacre Charlemagne"), but they are easily redeemed by the rest. Creative, inventive 60's pop, perfect arrangements, and delivered in that little girl voice that some people just hate. Her pitch is a little off (noticeable because she uses no vibrato), but her sense of rhythm is impeccable. If this is 'ye-ye' music --and that's very debatable-- then it's time to rehabilitate that label. Okay, the Gainsbourg tunes are among the best, but what a shame not to look any further! (Interesting: not a single cover version here, in an era dominated by adaptations of the Anglo-American top ten.)

    3 out of 5 stars france.......2006-03-23

First thing I thought Of France Gall and this album is 'She sounds like an infant!' But her voice is sweet and soft and the melodies of the songs on each track are wonderful. I enjoy most of the album.

4 out of 5 stars France Gall and the controversial song "Sucettes".......2003-10-22

French pop singer France Gall is major star in her native land and has a strong following throughout Europe, but has received little notice in the United States except for Heavenly having covered her hit "Nous ne Sommes pas des Anges" in the mid-1990s. Born Isabelle Gall in Paris, her father wrote songs for Edith Piaf and in 1965 she won the Eurovision Song Contest with her hit "Poupee de Circe, Poupee de Son." There were those who wanted to dismiss her as the French version of Leslie Gore, but Gall had a much more substantive career, especially with the notoriety she earned from the title song. "Sucettes" was a nice little song about a young girl and her lollipop, but in the sexually charged 1960s the obvious sub-text was about a different sort of oral fixation (I am not going to be more explicit than that; just think about it).

The 1965 album "Les Sucettes" is representative of the Gall's best work during the decade when she was a pretty and perky teenager whose vocal strength was more in terms of her performance than her range or power (i.e., she had the innocent sex kitten vocals down big time). "Bonsoir John John" is where Gall pushes her voice as far as it will go. However, her father clearly made sure that she had strong production values behind her in the studio. This is amply proven by the first and best track on the album, "Tu N'as Pas le Droit," which is a catchy girl-group type song pumped up by a strong brass section. Nothing else on the album is as strong, but there is really nothing bad on this album. "Celui Que J'aime" is a nice little acoustic ballad, "Oh! Quelle Famille" makes nice use of a flute, and the children's chorus on "J'ai Retrouvé Mon Chien" is appropriately cute. For those who are interested in what Sixties pop music was like when it was not being sung in English, Gall is a good artist to check out.

Double Compilation of the Greatest Hits, Recorded by Michel Berger Wife - France Gall.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential compilation, obviously!.......2005-07-26

The baby doll who illuminated the sixties, alive legend of the French song, heart breaker who inspired the planetary tubes like "My way" (in French "Comme d'habitude" by Claude Francois), it's France Gall. Always for her, another French singer, Julien Clerc, sang "To suffer by you is not to suffer" ("Souffrir par toi n'est pas souffrir"). The union of her life with Michel Berger is marked by a great song, "The declaration of love" ("La declaration d'amour") followed of the arrival to the world of two children and innumerable hits.
After 40 years of songs and 30 years at Warner, here the artistic result of the "Doll of sound" who becomes a woman of flesh who sings. All the great compositions written by Michel Berger and remastered under the direction of Bruck Dawit are there: "Music", "If, mom, if " ("Si, maman, si"), "Need for love" ("Besoin d'amour"), "He played piano standing" ("Il jouait du piano debout"), "Very for the music" ("Tout pour la musique"), "Resists", "Diego, free in his head " ("Diego, libre dans sa tete"), "To give to give" ("Donner pour donner" duet with Elton John), "Disconnects" ("Debranche"), "Cezanne is painting" ("Cezanne peint"), "Ella, she has it " ("Ella, elle l'a"), "The only thing which counts" ("La seule chose qui compte"). Essential compilation, obviously (Evidemment) !

This purchase was to replace a missing album lost in a move. It is that good, probably her best in my opinion. Her voice and range as well as her subject matter bring her music alive.

    5 out of 5 stars Babacar-France Gall.......2002-06-24

Reminds me of driving with a friend in Germany on the autobahn. Great traveling music. Upbeat, catchy, even if you can't sing in French!

4 out of 5 stars FRANCE's LAST SOLO ALBUM WITH MICHEL BERGER.......2000-10-18

For FRANCE GALL and her fans, that album will remain special, because it was to be the last with her husband that was entirely conceived for her(the 1992 songs were duets). It is also linked with their trips to SENEGAL(BABACAR was a child they supported)and also very personnal(EVIDEMMENT was written in the memory of DANIEL BELAVOINE who was their best friend)FRANCE has always admired ELLA FITZGERALD, and the song ELLA is her tribute. The record was her biggest seller ever in EUROPE and almost all the songs were hits.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me, french is the most beautiful language.......2000-05-27

Poppy and emotional, yet mature enough to convince. Maybe the song Babacar itself is melodramatic, but the singing on this album is so clear and charming I just have to like it.

    1 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2000-04-02

Another product of a questionable practice that juxtaposes original scores with a hodgepodge of previously recorded songs, this disc is difficult to enjoy without the benefits of a programmable CD player. Richard Robbins's original music to this Merchant-Ivory production is full of interludes that are nicely executed but ill-served by the misguided inclusion of ghosts from old pop stars past. Though engaging in their range from dark romanticism to dreamy suspense and playful swing, Robbins's tracks are not distinctive enough to fend off a wet blanket of noise from the likes of Tito Puente, France Gall, Canned Heat, and David Bowie--all of whom may be welcomed during the movie's actual narrative but not by the home listener in search of a consistent mood. --Joseph Lanza

5 out of 5 stars amazing soundtrack to an amazing movie........1999-07-20

The French pop songs are a great collection for a beginner of the genre, and the orchestral pieces are beautiful. La Guira is a nice extra. A must have for any film or music fan.

        4 out of 5 stars Pretty good..........1998-11-13

I like Richard Robbins' music very much and as usual it is top notch. Unfortunately, most of the vocal tracks could have used better placement, execpt "La Guira" and "Di Doo Dah", the only two I enjoy. Overall, a good album.

4 out of 5 stars FRANCE GALL FANS WILL ENJOY.......2001-04-20

This live album will please all FRANCE GALL fans including yours truely;there is also a second cd which is the continuation of this one. This was her comeback after her husbands's death( MICHEL BERGER)the year before. Her musicians provide good backing for her.DÉBRANCHE is longer and funkier than the original recording. The musicians don't steal the show;they give her the chance to display her considérable charm. Many songs like LA MINUTE DE SILENCE and MADEMOISELLE CHANG were originally recorded by MICHEL BERGER.Most fans of FRANCE GALL remain faithful to her;we remember the teenager who used to charm us and the happily married couple she formed with MICHEL.FRANCE will always be the GALL from FRANCE.

5 out of 5 stars FRANCE I STILL LOVE YOU.......2002-09-11

I should not give five stars to this record, but FRANCE GALL has enchanted my childhood with her innocent charm.I always feel like a kid when i listen to this her last LP for PHILLIPS.FRANCE at this time of her career is no longer the teenager darling of the famed radio program SALUT LES COPAINS.She is now 20 but can't seem to get rid of the image she helped to create a few years ago.The period that will follow will be the most difficult for her. Then in 1974,FRANCE encounters a certain MICHEL BERGER, not at all interested at first place in working with her.But FRANCE uses her considerable charm to convince him to write her new songs.Love does the rest.As for this lp,you only need to forget about your dream of having FRANCE GALL as your kid sister to enjoy it.This is SERGE GAINSBOURG'S last important collaboration for this girl who has brought him fame by recording his songs:NEFERTITI,TEENIE WEENIE BOPPIE and many others in previous lps.

4 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Kitch à la française!.......2002-03-08

France Gall, a staple in the French music scene for nearly forty years, has been gaining a reputation recently in America for her early pop Go-Go music (or as the french called it, ye-ye music). Most people wanting to indulge their sweet tooth in such fare would be well suited to buy one of the many collections, most of which go by the name "Poupée de son."

I take it if you are looking at this album, you have already sampled her wares and are looking for more. Fear not. You have come to the right place.

This album probably seemed like a pitiful attempt to come up with some response to "Sergeant Pepper," an album that upped the ante for every artist and claimed the careers of many. So, at least for a while, with France Gall. After a long streak of successful singles, EPs and LPs, this is the last of the ye-ye albums and France went away for a while to retool with some rather bizarre hits in Germany before coming back with more "serious" work in collaberation with her husband, Michel Berger, in the 70's and 80's.

But to all people who love the Summer of Love, the "Nuggets" collections and all things psychedelic, the kitchier, the better, this album is a must. The mixture of France's squeaky freshly pubescent voice over the most lavish over-the-top psychedelic production makes for songs Petula Clark or Nancy Sinatra would beg for. And in French! (I'll admit it. Every time she uses le sujonctif, I get goosepimples.)

The songwriting is top-notch if a little, ahem, familiar. "C'est toi que je veux" starts with a nice string quartet kidnapped from "Yesterday" before Dusty Springfield's brass section bowls them over then returns to a plucked bass line plucked from "Good Vibrations." "Chanson indienne" is as over-the-top as "Can You Dig It?" from the Monkees' ill-fated "Head."

But the star tunes on this album are the ones found on the collections. "Bébé requin" is seductive. "Teeny Weeny Boppie" chugs into strange lands. "Avant la bagarre" starts with a switch so out of left field, you'll have to reverse and listen to it again a couple times before you can finish the song.

"La petite" is the only clunker, a duet with a man who sounds three times her age and harks back to childish songs she put on her early albums because, well, she was only 14 back then. It's the last track. Just skip it.

No, it's not the Beatles. Not even the Monkees. If you want a better singer, Françoise Hardy blows her away. But if you want a museum piece of pure 1967 (which is when 1968 was released) this is for you.
France Gall is hard to resist. People who I play her to might hate it on the first listen. Then later they all ask if they can borrow it. Then "sans que tu le sache" France Gall will devour your heart.

        5 out of 5 stars Yay for Ye-Ye Music!.......2000-08-25

Okay. Here I go: Upon reading that some April March song's sounded very much like France Gall, I had to look. I was curious, and I put her on my shopping list when I spent a weekend in Chicago. I bought this cd for 23 bux. I felt a twinge of financial pain when I saw the amazon price, but I feel no regret. This cd is good -- catchy, sweet, fun, and just a little bit tangy. If you're into Francoise Hardy or April March, you'll want this, too.
