Recreating the ambience that made his 2002 outing, Pas de Chat Noir, so evanescent yet indelibly memorable, Tunisian oud master Brahem continues his by-now-well-established collaboration with François Couturier (piano) and Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion.) The trio's improvisations are miracles of weightless precision; while sounding like nobody else, they also evoke chanting medieval monks, Keith Jarrett's florid keyboard sagas, Parisian bal musette, the long-vanished Moorish kingdom of Granada via 20th-century Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, languid recollections of French impressionist Eric Satie plus dissonant gleanings from Astor Piazzolla's sardonic Argentinean neo-tangos. Despite this complex array of intellectual influences, which permeate the trio's constructions like smoke rings, their works come across as disarmingly simple and unpretentious, a tidily diffuse combination of Arabic modes, European classical disciplines and jazzy intuition. Liberated by sheer inventiveness, the trio's technical skill is so extreme that it has long since ceased to draw attention to itself. Instrumentalists of this caliber are long past needing to impress anyone but themselves. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars An hour with Anouar.......2007-07-28

Here's another hour of near-minimalist relaxation with Anouar Brahem, now one of the great international names in jazz. This latest album is every bit as atmospheric as his last several; the trio format (with Brahem on oud, and the others on piano and accordion) is well suited to the music, though for an appreciable portion of the program there is actually only one (or two) of the instruments playing. The music itself is jazz, but a version of jazz such as Arvo Part might create: sparse and mysterious, with additional atmospheric hints of French cabaret, North African caravans, and Middle Eastern opium dens. There is actually not a good deal of range of mood to Brahem's music, whatever he titles his albums, but this is never an issue, as the man seems unable to create anything incapable of touching one's deep interior places.

3 out of 5 stars just a remark.......2007-04-29

Though i find it interesting and nice music it surprises me that the song 'e la nave va' is to my personal opinion simply stolen from philip Glass (Glassworks) a classical 'minimal music' icon from a few decades ago, it is the same rhytmical structure and chord progression, strange people get away with this

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, subtle, well-crafted mystery.......2007-04-11

This is really an amazing CD. You feel transported, even inspired, even though the music has a deep melanchonic feel, there is a subtle awe that comes from it. I played it at my work, with colleagues who have a wide range of musical taste (all very good tastes, though), and it became an instant unanimous favorite. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly gorgeous.......2007-02-17

Tunisian Anouar Brahem's "Le Voyage de Sahar" finds him in the same company- pianist Francis Courturier and accordionist Jean-Louis Martinier- as 2002's highly acclaimed "Le pas du chat noir."
Having toured in support of that CD, the trio developed into a true group, something that Brahem accentuates to great effect on this program of new compositions and three favorites that are recast with the new ensemble.
With "Voyage" Brahem continues a trend of creating music that is not as overtly "jazzy" as some of his earlier outings.
Nonetheless, he remains a master a crafting deliciously vivid, richly evocative compositions that distill Arabic music and European jazz sensibilities with a warm, sonorous chamber music vibe.
Among the ports of call on this "Voyage" are "Zarabanda," whose elegant lope recalls the French Riviera.
Elsewhere the title track exudes mysticism tempered with intrigue, while "Cordoba" and "Ete Andalous" are meditative pieces with a decidedly cinematic scope. The gentle bounce of "Nuba" and introspection of "Les Jardins de Ziryab" both include uncredited but effective passages of voice.
Rarely do you hear music this gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars A great piece of work and a great award to go along.......2007-01-26

With this album, Anouar Brahem won the 2006 "Edison Award" [...] one of the most prestigious music awards in Europe... The jury had these words when anouncing the winners: "with 'Le Voyage de Sahar', the Tunisian musician Anouar Brahem proposes an exhilarating, beautiful and intense album".

4 out of 5 stars musical pattern-painter.......2006-02-10

"One of the ironies of the current vogue for so-called world musics is that the adventurous listener often finds himself championing forms exotic to his ear which are, in their true context, fundamentally conservative." (-- Steve Lake in the original liner notes)

While I don't know my oud music well enough to know if this is astonishing or breathtaking, it is a very pleasant listen -- meditative or sensuous depending on the listener's mood. The pieces are mostly short and well-composed, and the recording upholds ECM's reputation for clarity and simplicity -- oud, violin and goblet drums, without any post-production to speak of.

It's certainly a virtuoso performance to my ears.

Like the complex and beautiful calligraphy that adorns the cover, Barzakh is refined and virtuosic, yet intricate enough to really focus the listener. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning album and artist.......2003-02-25

Anouar Brahem and his Oud continue to make wonderfully emotive music of great depth. At times pensive and melancholy, at others upbeat, he achieves something in music that is ineffable and all too rare. I highly recommend ANYTHING by him, but I prefer this album, with "Le conte de l'incroyable amour" in second place.

If you are a fan of ethnic music or of string instruments in general, you would do well to check this out. Lute and Guitar players alike stand to learn a lot from Brahem.

5 out of 5 stars A DISC OF BREATHTAKING BEAUTY AND TECHNIQUE.......2003-01-30

Let me state from the beginning that anything you're fortunate to find by Anouar Brahem is going to be excellent. This man is one of the most talented, consistently tasteful musicians around. He is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, but his main instrument is the oud - the lute of the Arabic music world - and that's what he plays on this recording, accompanied simply and beautifully by Bechir Selmi on violin and Lassad Hosni on percussion. All of the compositions here - based on traditional Arabic music forms - are by Brahem, except for `Barzakh' (composed by Brahem and Selmi); and `Souga' and `Bou Naouara' (composed by Hosni).

There are slow, moderate, and fast-paced pieces here - most are relatively short, with a couple of moderately long pieces and one lengthy one. The musical ideas and themes are developed intelligently, with grace and incredible beauty - and none of the faster-paced passages give the feeling that the players are utilizing the tempo simply to impress the listener. They allow the music to take them where it will, with no unnecessary side trips or embellishments - but even with the sparse instrumentation (or perhaps because of it), each piece is full and complete.

ECM has a long-standing reputation for releasing music that refuses to be rammed into the corner of a single genre - BARZAKH is an outstanding example of that freedom of thought. This is a recording that can be appreciated by almost anyone - fans of world/ethnic music (for obvious reasons); jazz (taqsim is the Arabic term for improvisation around an established theme, an important aspect of these pieces); and classical (for the Arabic classical elements in this music are strong). The recording quality, as in every ECM release I've ever heard, is exceptional and `trick'-free, presenting the music to the listener with as few barriers as possible.

This is a truly outstanding recording - and one of my favorites of any genre.

5 out of 5 stars ASTONISHING.......2000-06-24

THE FIRST TIME I HEARD BARZAKH I WAS ASTONISHING, I THINK THIS IS THE RIGTH WORD TO DESCRIBE BARZAKH, THERE IS A KIND OF MISPLACED FEELING WHEN YOU LISTEN TO IT, YOU JUST CANNOT FIND THE WORDS, IT IS THAT KIND OF THING THAT DOES NOT NEED NOTHING TO DISCRIBE IT, IF YOU TRY TO DO IT, YOU JUST DON'T GET ENOUGH, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING WITH NO NAME AFTER LISTENING BARZAKH, JUST FLOWTING AWAY...

5 out of 5 stars Want listen to best meditranean music?.......1999-08-07

In this CD, we discover a great inspired composer. The base of the music is arabic but it's opened to all kind of other musics, specially the Meditranean ones. The violonist is one of the best in the arabic world. Listen to 2nd track, and the 8th you'll understand what deep is this music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Egypt: Sherri's Opinion.......2007-04-11

I haven't been able to get enough of this music lately. It's lovely, evocative, and perfect background for serious reading or thinking. The music was written as background for the Seattle Art Museum Tutankhamun Exhibit and must have inspired those viewing the exhibit to think seriously about the meaning of the art they saw, the meaning of the young king's life, and perhaps the meaning of their own. Jihad Racy is highly skilled and probably promotes intercultural understanding with his music. It's fun to listen to the old and/or traditional instruments. Perhaps ancient Egyptian music was not truly like this music, but for the sake of the Egyptians, I hope it was.

5 out of 5 stars good mood music.......2006-11-12

after seeing the tut exhibit, i had found the background music almost hypnotic. it added greatly to the images before me. i thought this would be pleasant to listen to at home. unfortunately, ancient styled egyptian music is hard to find. in some places even this cd has a more modernized, or slightly moroccan sound to it. yet, overall it's one of the better i've found so far. don't expect 8 pieces of music that are greatly varied in style and delivery. the variances are small, but the somewhat repetitiousness of sound adds to it's relaxation value. it can easily be used as a background music that puts you at ease, but doesn't distract you from your point of focus.

4 out of 5 stars First time listener.......2006-06-30

As the first CD I've bought with "Ancient Music" on it I was impressed, but since I've heard other CD's of music from Egypt and Greece, I found this one more orchestrated. Not that that takes away from it's listening pleasure but the others gave me more of a feel of the Ancient times the music is supposed to represent. It is made to represent ancient music while some of the others are based on actual written music (or so they say) that had been found on scrolls. All in all it was an excellent way to begin my journey into the past.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2003-09-08

I'm not an expert on Egyptian music or Middle Eastern music so I can't attest to its authenticity, but nonetheless the cd is absolutely beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! I'm addicted to the soothing sounds! If your aim is relaxation and/or inspiration, this is an incredible collection! I love the fact that it calls to mind music from so many cultures - Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc. - and I can't help but feel that perhaps Ancient Egyptian music would have been one of the predecessors of many of these musical cultures! So, why shouldn't it sound a bit like all of them?

5 out of 5 stars An interpretation of Ancient Egypt.......2003-06-27

From the Album cover the names of the various tunes it is designed to represent ancient Egypt. Also one needs to take in consideration that this musical tribute to ancient Egypt was originally composed in 1978 for the King Tutankhamen Exhibit at the Seattle art Museum and Played continuously during the exhibit. Only traditional Near Eastern interments were used and their acoustical capabilities are explored and expanded in this work.
IF there seams to be a resemblance to middle eastern music that may be because Ali Jihad Racy also has also recorded such on other Lyricord albums.
This is very enjoyable and worth the price.

This album is a delightful composite of Turkish bellydance music, which brought back pleasant memories and visions of the graceful art of the dance. Even if you are not familiar with the dance, the instruments bring you to the Levant in an enjoyable way.

5 out of 5 stars More than get up and move.........2007-01-05

The music is lovely, haunting, thought provoking stuff, Great to move to and even greater kept low with candles and a fire to support conversaion or renewing your reason to be alive.Very invigorating fun energy, gets some strange looks from the people in the next car at stoplights, supports grinning freely.

5 out of 5 stars Energetic music!.......2006-11-06

Excellent CD to move to the beat. No one can stay seated with this music playing.

5 out of 5 stars guaranteed Turkish style.......2006-05-27

Every track of this CD offers lively inspiration for dancing and fantasizing. As a whole, the CD really delivers (with real instruments) the Turkish style of cabaret, which has never been for the faint of heart.

Track six, "Nihavent oyun havasi," is perfect for any dancer who needs pacing because the tempo is moderate, neither too fast nor too slow, while the overall mood is hypnotic, though more varied than in the first track "Desert Night Dance" which has more steady mystique, even in the fast part, and hence is excellent for dramatic veil work. Also the Nihavent music makes good use of zilya (finger cymbals) in a way that almost focuses the music around this small percussion.

The final track "Trakya ciftetellisi" is a real sweat drencher at eight minutes and twenty seconds. Not for beginners, it could leave even the most advanced dancer breathless but ecstatic!

5 out of 5 stars It got a beginner belly dancing!.......2005-01-06

I've very recently decided to take up belly dancing in the privacy of my own home, and while I've gotten much music lately, this CD had me up and trying everything I could think of in the living room. This one really inspired me. Listen to the samples! Enough slow rhythms to encourage undulation at a speed even I could accomplish.

Sudan's Hamza El Din is a master of the oud (a fretless forerunner of the lute), and the man who first introduced Americans to the instrument in the '60s. On this, his first album in three years, his playing is as wonderful and mesmerizing as ever--you can almost feel his fingers touching the strings. While some of the pieces are formal and classical in a Middle Eastern manner, on others he takes flight, using his virtuosity to travel through the whole gamut of emotions in a way that would leave most guitarists in the dust. It all ends on an odd note, however, with a piece that's lovely, but almost New Age in its sweeping melodicism, and which might just (finally) break El Din to a wider audience. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-03-29

This is my first experience with oud music, and I have to say I love it very much. This is a very relaxing CD, and I plan to buy more of Brahem's music. The only thing I would say contrary is that the clarinet is too overpowering at times. I have to turn my volume down a tad. But on songs like 'Parfum de Gitane' the instrument sounds perfect and magical. Thanks for the great CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Fusion Success.......2004-01-25

I was searching for contemporary Arab music when I ran across this gem. Inspired by the music of the 'stans of Central Asia, this disc pairs Anouar Brahem's astounding oud playing with a clarinet and Moroccan drums (bendir and darbouka). The resulting fusion succeeds surprisingly well, comparable to the achievements in a different genre of Radio Tarife. Some of the tracks have a jazz quality reminiscent, at moments, of Benny Goodman. The highlight however is the unique title piece, which appears on two different tracks.

On the down side, I still find the first piece (by the clarinetist Barbaros Erkose) disappointing, even after repeated listening. Moreover, the clarinet is over modulated in a few spots. With these exceptions, the music and the sound quality are both superb. This disc will reward the listener with a wealth of detail when played on a good audio system.

5 out of 5 stars a taste of exotica.......2003-12-24

This still certainly rates as jazz, but just as much it gives the impression of a visit to... --well, uh, a cafe in Astrakan. Especially atmospheric is the clarinet play of sideman Barbaros Erkose, which produces just the right emphasis of exotica to complement Brahem's virtuostic oud play (is there a greater student of this instrument now recording?) and the unobtrusive backing percussion (bendir and darbouka). This is a tuneful but rather laid back kind of jazz, occasionally giving itself over to flashes of brilliant play. It sounds more than just a bit mysterious, but it is a naked mystery. Stripped of the kind of mood cliches one often hears in the soundtracks to bad films about Arabic lands, this music reveals some of the emotional secrecies that can be found at the heart of the cultures it strives to portray.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional music from a Master.......2003-08-31

I own around 1200 CDs, and I consider myself an expert in international music. This one CD stands out among a very few in my collection. I am going to try to describe it, but I won't be able to do justice; I can't find the right words. This fully instrumental CD (no singing) takes you to a magical land and recreates centuries of middle eastern imagery in the mind of the listener. This is not a CD like "Simon Shaheen"'s modernistic approach to Middle Eastern music. This is "traditional Middle East" with perfect harmony and perfect performance. I have played this CD hundreds of times since I purchased it. And I still love it like the very first time.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime recording. Transcendent........2006-02-16

So many beautiful and haunting passages throughout this recording and the deep source which this taps into is unmatched in any of Brahem's other works before or since.

The second piece "Kashf" is my personal favorite. "Kashf" the Arabic word meaning intuition, insight and discovery of unseen/unknown things, certainly transports one to a place they may never have visited before. And if this was all it would still be a worthwhile album, but there's so much more. The very next piece, deepens one's mood even further until the fourth where the Holland's double bass and Brahem's oud dance a musical duet. The lack of percussion is an important unifying thread through the tracks and allows the mind to fly and wander with the relaxed music.

This is music that can bring one to tears. No matter what you find in the reviews it's still indescribable and needs to be experienced. Unfortunately this trio of musicians hasn't recorded together again, which makes this even more special. A sublime recording of a very special synergy between the players and their instruments available for us to enjoy over and over.

Do yourself a favor, skip something else, and get this!

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars un viaggio meraviglioso.......2004-08-30

5 out of 5 stars wonderful disk.......2004-05-22

This is one of my favorites disks. You'll really like it... for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful..........2002-10-11

Thimar touches the soul and the mind as well. Not a single redundant node is played, but those that are there all have meaning. The whole music is airy (with a lot of reverb thanks to ECM :-) and lacks Rabih Abou-Khalil's agressivity but not his energy. John Surman and Dave Holland are both great.

I think I can't say anything about the beauties of this work... You have to listen.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Bliss !!! .......2007-03-22

Aaah, what could I say about simone? I started listening to simone's Blue flame a few years back, this album grows in you, especially alqantara and mediterenea , I ve seen this band play live last month in berkeley, CA, and they played with such grace and excellence. A new song called Iraq was also played, anticipating us for another magical journey in shaheen's music. A pure soulful and graceful set of talents, melodies, and truly delightful music. Bravo !!! 10 stars !!!

5 out of 5 stars EASTERN & WESTERN CLASSICS & JAZZ.......2004-03-22

If you like instrumental Music, Arabic, Western Classicas and Jazz ,then this is one of the best mixture of Middle Eastern ( Mediterranean ) and Western Classics & Jazz Music I have ever heard, it is like a fresh breath of air. I highly recommend it. I hope Mr.Simon Shaheen produces more such a wonderfull Music in near future.

5 out of 5 stars A strong performance!.......2002-10-08

Simon Shaheen is a true master of the oud and a brilliant composer. His treatment of the oriental and western musical heritage is respectful while in the same time managing to be genuinly innovative. A feat that needs a true master of improvisation to be accomplished. His virtuosity in the art of taqasim and his sensitivity towards western music reminds me of the skill and power of Udi Georgo Bacanos, the legendary turkish oud master that set the standard for generations to come. Whether you like traditional oriental music, multi-cultural jaming or time honoured jazz this album should satisfy you completely.

5 out of 5 stars A unique blend of East & West - a feast for the ears!!!.......2002-09-08

Shaheen's amazing talent fuses middle eastern melodies with rythmic, soulful jazz - creating an album that is a joy to listen to and that has a soothing effect on the soul.
Buy this album - let the music take you to different shores ~ truly, a brilliant compilation of art at its best!

A great surprise.
This CD bends genres without straying into electrofusion or any style that would not compliment the acoustic style of music being presented.

An exquisite collection of songs from the countries surrounding the Mediterranean, the White Sea, in original languauges. S Yanatou has an angelic voice. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Comment on "Gemçis Güzel Günerli" and more.......2005-05-01

First off, this is the best Savina Yannatou CD I've heard to date -- her voice is in terrific form here. (Though you'll get to hear a lot more of the band on her latest release, Sumiglia.)

Second, track 11 ("Gemçis Güzel Günerli") *is* a Turkish song, written by an Aremenian citizen of Turkey, Hrant Kenkulian, or "Udi Hrant," as he's often known -- this is mentioned in the liner notes to Mediterranea. ("Udi" is an honorific prefix meaning that he was a master player of the ud, a Middle Eastern lute.) If you're interested in exploring his music further, there are several recordings of his work (voice, ud, and violin) on the Traditional Crossroads label. (Type "Udi Hrant" into the search engine on this site and you'll find the CDs very easily.)

Turkey was -- and still is -- an ethnically mixed country, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. There were Armenian Turkish composers and musicians at the courts of the Ottoman sultans, and there were those who also excelled at light classical and popular song. Hrant Kenkulian was a master of classical and popular music -- if you explore further, you'll find out that he's one of many 20th-century Armenians who were involved in the development of Turkish music.

Yannatou is an inheritor of Turkish tradition, too. Modern Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for many centuries, and there is a very strong Turkish tinge to much of the Greek music she performs. (And vice versa, as she performs Pontic Greek music from the Black Sea coast of Turkey; also songs from Smyrna -- now called Izmir -- on Turkey's western coast.)

What I love most about her work is her peerless way with all of the songs she chooses. Many people have tried to come up with pan-Mediterranean discs, but Yannatou is one of a handful of people who has succeeded at it.

5 out of 5 stars Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is actually Armenian.......2004-09-22

My professional background is in ethnomusicology. I am not Greek, Turkish or Armenia so I have no axe to grind. One reviewer below, apparently of Turkish background, seems to take offense that Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is not listed as "Turkish Traditional." there is a simple reason for that, it isn't orignially a Turkish song. It is a well known Armenian song, with the same melody for hundred of years. Indeed this rendition is in Turkish, but to call it "Turkish traditional" would be innacurate.

Inded it belongs to, adn illustrates, a whole body of non Turkish music from Turkey which actually speaks to the ethnic cleansing that occured the in the 1900-1920's period.

Few people in today's Turkey, which has been purged of knowledge of the roots of its own tradional music, are aware of the multiethnic roots of its music. It was for years criminal to even suggest that many songs were orignially Greek, Kurdish or Armenian.

So I am glad that my Turkish friend likes the Armenian ballad Gecmis Guzel Gunleri ("The Beautiful Past Days") and am only sorry that he never heard the original recordings by an long dead artist now know in Turkey as Udi Hrant, but whose non stage name was Udi Hrant Kenkulian. His family was murdered in the Turkish Genocide against the Armenians, which makes his song more ever poignant - as the title suggests..

5 out of 5 stars The Meditarranean Soul Captured in One CD!.......2002-04-02

Savina Yannatou has an indescribable soprano voice which captures the sounds and emotions of the Meditarranean people whether Italian, Greek, French (Corsica), Hebrew or Turkish (I may have missed a country or two present on the CD). The wedding song from the Greek island of Kalymnos and the Turkish "aman" song are my favorites. All the songs are so beautifully sung, it is hard to say that one is better than another ... I have heard these two songs before and am familiar with how they should sound: her singing is traditonal with a tenderness and sincerity that is a uniquely her own. Savina's voice is ethereal and "other worldly" - totally living up to her name, after a saint from the Meditarranean, Italy, I think.

I first heard Savina Yannatou on Mondo Greece and knew I must have one of her CDs. I discovered this one and was compelled to buy it. It is filled with the music of Primavera de Salonika, playing kanun, santouri, lyra, and other authentic intstruments that complement Savina's voice. Her voice is beyond description ... totally captivating, exceptional, without comparison. Listen and be amazed - then buy the CD!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars Music from Hamza is a True Gift.......2001-03-06

Al Oud plays from the start like a well scripted concert. Each song takes hold of the ear, guiding us to the next. The transition from each track glides without seams. Hamza gives the listener a perfect balance between his simple and beautiful oud playing and a voice so gently harmonious. Hamza El Din is a technical master of oud and voice. This is why he can give us his true expression. What he wants to pour into the listener, is as easy to him as drinking water. This is a true gift.
