The Battlefield Band's Threads is dominated by traditional material. Thus it's a reminder of those heady days in Scotland a quarter century ago when the formerly separate strains of bagpipe music, dance music, and ballad music were suddenly united by progressive-folk groups who could do it all. Threads is no nostalgic look at old times, however, for the Battlefield Band's current fiddler, John McCusker, wasn't even born when the great Scottish folk renaissance of the '70s began. In fact, Alan Reid is the only original member still in the band, and his three mates give such Scottish standards as "Sleepy Maggie," "McPherson's Lament," "Snow on the Hills," and "The Indian Lass" a vigorous shaking that makes them well worth hearing again. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars The Shads shoot for greatness...and succeed!.......2007-07-23

There probably won't be an album released in 2007 that is more highly anticipated, closely inspected, and strictly critiqued than Shadows Fall's new one, "Threads of Life." After selling over 300,000 copies of their last full-length (2004's "War Within"), this Massachusetts-based quintet followed in the tracks of Lamb of God and Mastodon by (finally!) jumping to a major label (this is their first release under Atlantic Records). Subsequently, the band teamed-up with a well-known producer (Nick Raskulinecz) who has worked with such pop groups as Velvet Revolver and the Foo Fighters. These things considered, this could have been just the thing that haters were waiting to scream "sell out" at.

So what are we to make of the new album? Well, here's the thing: It sounds slick. Extremely slick, in fact. Atlantic's big budget and production definitely shine through here, as evidenced by the muted rhythm guitars, crisp lead guitars, punchy drums, big choruses, and multi-tracked vocals that are as smooth as a baby's bottom. Thus, a lot of fans will be immediately turned off that it isn't as raw, intense, or edgy as, say, 1997's debut, "Somber Eyes To The Sky." But there are a couple of advantages of this huge production, including a thicker guitar tone, and hooks that are just spectacular. Thus, your first listen to "Threads of Life" will probably be spent dwelling on how glossy it sounds, but after giving it a little time to digest, the album will soon reveal itself as the extremely contagious listen that it really is.

Every band member is at the top of his game here, and they turn out some of their best and most professional, phenomenal, and technical music to date. Paul Romanko is a solidified bassist, and he lays down some of his meatiest and most audible bass lines on this record, and Jason Bittner's drumming is as quick and forceful as ever. But there are really three star performers who take up most of the spotlight. The first of which is longtime frontman Brian Fair -- who proves he is much more than just a "vocalist" - he is an actual, honest-to-goodness singer! And a darn good one, too! Sure, he can still growl when he wants to, but he never sounds remotely one-dimensional or overly angry, because most of the time he opts for a full-throated singing voice which shows off his warm, powerful pipes. The two other stars are Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand, who are doubtlessly one of modern metal's leading guitar duos. Their riffs are deliciously crunchy, their leads are usually blazing fast (but never out of control), and their solos have gotten more technical and ripping, and now even occasionally border on being melodic.

The songwriting is superb as well. The Shads released a great C.D. in 2002 named "The Art of Balance," but that title could have just as well applied to this disc, too, because there is variety aplenty here. The result is a superbly exciting, meticulous, contagious, diverse, mature, rich, and well-textured sound. Plus, Brian Fair also chipped in by coming up with some of his smartest and most passionate and personal lyrics. "Threads of Life" has many terrifically memorable songs, and even if some are more so than others, there isn't a single stinker or filler to be found from front to back. In other words, heavy music doesn't get much more consistent, listenable, easy to digest, or flawless than this nowadays.

The propulsive "Redemption" hits the ground running with excellent, bullying guitar leads, deft double bass slamming, and a huge, wonderfully harmonic and infectious chorus that will have everybody in the crowd waving their lighters. "Burning The Lives" works similarly, with a forceful, streamlined chainsaw guitar attack opening the song before giving way to a "Dimebag" Darrell-worthy solo and an open, cleanly sung chorus. "Storm Winds" is the album's first semi-ballad, but not to worry: the fine singing, well-placed bits of guitar crunch, and terrific solo present here make this song another keeper. "Failure Of The Devout" begins with an acoustic intro that evokes Testament before rocketing into a river of blistering, chunked-up guitar shred.

Then, however, things start to get a little more experimental. Three of the next tracks, the hooky "Venomous," "Final Call" (which is highlighted by a grumbling bass line and one of Donais' best solos to date), and the especially hefty and chunky "Dead Uprising," are all muscular yet mid-tempo chug churners which slow down the record's pace significantly. You'll probably grow more and more uncertain as you make your way through surprising tracks like the ultra-melodic "Another Hero Lost," which will instinctively be thought of as a blatant stab at getting radio play. However, after dreamy, ambient acoustic strums, two cool guitar solos (one melodic, the other blazing), and Brian Fair's mindblowing singing voice and touching lyrics (inspired by Fair's cousin, who died while stationed in Iraq), are added to the mix, then "Another Hero Lost" turns out to be a great power ballad which any Eighties thrash band would be glad to call their own. Then comes "The Great Collapse," a gorgeous, piano-based interlude.

Two final songs round out the set, the first of which is one of the biggest highpoints on hand here. In addition to a guitar solo which will induce vertigo in some listeners, "Just Another Nightmare" boasts an awesome chorus composed of irresistibly sweet, sometimes almost even (dare I say it?) emo-ish crooning that stays in the listener's head for several days. Finally back on familiar ground, "Threads Of Life" ends the same way it began, with "Forevermore," which is an all-out onslaught of scorching riffage.

"Threads of Life" will surely be too mainstream for some fans (especially longtime followers), but fair-minded listeners will find absolutely nothing to dislike here. This is an unquestionably epic, excellent and satisfying album which is a frontrunning candidate for the year's best metal record, and is one of the top thrash releases of the new millennium. It even has the potential to go down as of the genre's all time classics, and to say that Shadows Fall are now firing on all cylinders would be a gross understatement. Some would argue that The Shads came close to but did not quite fully achieve true greatness with their first six full-length releases, but there should be little debate over that now, because "TOL" is the kind of stuff that legends are made of.

3 out of 5 stars Shadows Fall - Threads of Life .......2007-07-17

After hearing some buzz about Shadows Fall, I decided to check them out. Their most recent album "Threads of Life" is the latest release from the band, so my review will lack the critical analysis that could be used to compare any progression or change they have had from albums in their past discography.

Songs I liked: Redemption is the opening track and is heavy and powerful, with a mix of thrash and repetitive style rock riffs in places. The songwriting is good and I liked the vocal efforts on this song, as well as most songs on the album. The track "Failure of the Devout" has some good changeups within the overall structure of the guitar parts. The track "Another Hero Lost" is one of my favorites and has some catchy riffs as well as definitive melodic guitars throughout. The drifting ballad "Final Call" is a nice change to throw into the mix of hard edged thrash and rock based tunes. The fact they do this shows a little bit of diversity and showcases the bands ability to at least do something different than spit out repeated riffs and angst style vocals, which is a habit many bands of this genre fall into. The track "Forevermore" is fast and furious with high speed guitars and vocals that hit home. The percussion on this song is a little more prevalent and does not take a back seat to any of the other instruments used.

Bottom Line: Normally I don't like to use other bands when comparing music or writing a review, however at times it can be very necessary because it is a better way of conveying a sound or style of music than trying to describe the sounds I hear and feel on the album. If you are looking for a more progressive or math metal style of music, these guys are probably not for you. If you like some of the thrash metal bands from the 1980s then you may find these guys to your liking. They are not Pantera or old Metallica, but the album itself is pretty tight, and although at times I felt there was a lot of repetition within the songs as a collective whole, there is enough strength here to grow, with room to improve. If you like to listen to anything from Disturbed to Dragonforce, you may find room for this album in your collection. This genre of music is heavily saturated right now with bands trying to make their mark, and I think Shadows Fall may have enough shredding and decent songwriting within them to carry on into the next decade. I realize they formed over ten years ago, and do have a strong overall fan base. Vocalist Brian Fair is particularly impressive here and with that said; I look forward to going back and listening to more music by this band.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-07-06

This Album is just awesome! Plain and simple. Riffs are awesome, solos are insane, and Brian Fair's vocals keep getting better. It's nice to hear a band that grows and stays true to themselves too.

5 out of 5 stars Thrash and terror!.......2007-07-05

I am so glad to see that there are stil thrash bands in circulation. I like all of that norweigian black/deathy stuff...but thrash is my idea of great metal music. And here they are, a modern band doing an old thing with all of the much needed ingreidients to keep it original and personal. Shadows Fall is further proof that thrash is not just another metal trend, it's the timeless form of metal that will always come back to bite you just when you thought it was dead. I recommend this fine album to fans of Slayer, Exodus, and Burst.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful traditional Irish music!.......2005-07-08

This is great music! It can make you cry or dance. These are wonderful musicians. My personal favorites are "The Bergen", "The Lake of Innisfree", and "Liza's Dream".

5 out of 5 stars Many Talents, Much Music.......2004-05-01

I think I've mentioned elsewhere that, despite a purely Polish/Russian heritage I'm really a secret Irish person. Perhaps my ancestors sailed too close to Ireland on the way to Ellis Island. In any case, I love discovering a new source of Irish/Celtic music - even if everyone else has already heard of them.

Such is the case with Cherish the Ladies an Irish group that was the bright idea of Mick Maloney and has enjoyed the sponsorship of the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts. What made them unusual is that they were the first all-women traditional Irish band. But what makes them good isn't their gender, but their superb musicianship. Led by Joanie Madden on flute and whistle, who has many recordings of her own, the current group includes Mary Coogan (guitar), Mary Rafferty (accordion), Donna Long (piano), Siobhan Egan (fiddle), and Aoife Clancy (vocals).

The skills of the group are such that they can shift from slow ballads like 'High Germany' and 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree' to the fast an fancy playing of the deft combination of 'Thady Casey's Fancy/The Ladies' Pantalettes/The Monaghan Twig/The Linen.' 'Her Mantle So Green' is a soft instrumental, which Sinead O'Conner sang so often.

It's unfair to pick out any performer her as all have their moments and come together easily, finding ways to mix old and new (like 'Lisa's Dream/The Westside Highway'). This is a nicely produced album that focuses on the music making rather than production effects - something that will bear up under repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing, playing, and arrangements.......1999-11-22

I have been listening to traditional Scottish and Irish music for more than 20 years, and Cherish the Ladies is one of the most exciting bands I've heard. "Threads of Time" is my first exposure to the band. The arrangements are exquisite. The band is true to the Gaelic tradition, provactive, and innovative. I especially like their rendition of the Yeats poem (far more than the author's).

5 out of 5 stars Toe tapping music to get you going.......1999-09-20

After see Cherish the Ladies in concert with our local symphony, we bought this CD and have loved the music ever since. After we got into Riverdance, we were looking for other Irish tunes and found the Ladies.

Their music is soulful and uplifting and alway makes me want to start stepping! Try this CD, you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars One of their best!.......1998-06-14

I just bought this CD and already it is one of my favorite CTL albums, despite the lack of a single song in Gaelic. This album is a beautiful blend of traditional tunes and original pieces, and while I miss Cathy Ryan, I must say that Aoife Clancy has an amazing and beautiful voice!

These six women are award-winning musicians. Daughters of immigrants or immigrants themselves, their voices and instruments reverberate with their deep love of Irish music and of their own heritage. If you have not yet experienced Cherish the Ladies, this is a great place to start!

I have seen Lorie perform several times and know that the title song of this album was written by Lorie as a gift from a groom to his bride. Can you imagine receiving such a wonderful gift? Lorie's own music is so beautiful and her arrangements of well-known tunes so fresh. I have many of her albums and love each one. I cannot recommend her enough and only wish she came to Pittsburgh to perform more often. This album is truly a joy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Nuggets of psychedelic delight.......2004-09-03

Very impressive compilation. I would say about 15 of these songs are good to very good; the first disc is slightly superior to the second. They had the requisite psyche instruments, and the singer to lead the chorus. Perhaps a bit more lively, and harmonious than other 60's psyche groups. Unfortunately, also an expensive purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Hyacinth Threads.......2001-11-26

Another lost british pop group of the late 60s,who relesed a load of singles but failed to chart in britain but did rather well in europe. This 2 cd compilation is more like an anthology covers all their a and b sides plus other recordings they did as well plus alternative tracks.Comes with a precise history of the group plus some rare photos, also includes pictures of their records and sleeves.Only thing that lets it down is the remastering could have been done better on some of the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars What to make of this record?.......2003-11-14

First of all, I have to cordially disagree with my good friend and fellow Amazon jazz reviewer, Nate Dorward, for whom I have nothing but the highest regard. Unlike him, I'm thoroughly taken by this disc's marvelous, mysterious, menacing soundscape. A brooding, ominous Presence hangs over everything, strikingly unveiled in the very first notes of the first cut and carried throughout the entire record. This could almost be the soundtrack to some Post-Modern techno interpretation of Wuthering Heights. The combination of wild string voicings, dire bass rumblings, Matthew Shipp's crazed synth stylings, and Guillermo Brown's frenetic drumming creates a wild, primitive vibe that just knocks me out. Deep, portentous, even threatening sonorities characterize this music.

Really, this it: Maniacal string sawing, great crashing cymbals, dangerous-sounding bass voicings from the inimitable William Parker. I don't even care if Ware doesn't play on half the cuts. His conceptual spoor is all over this disc. Matt Maneri, a violist I've had a hard time warming up to, has found his ideal recording context. Teamed with Daniel Bernard Rouman on violin, they hammerlock the listener into submission with inspired string washes of the grimmest timbres.

"Threads," 13 minutes of sheer sonic melancholy, is the shibboleth here. If you can get on board with its dour vibe, you're more than halfway home. To me, this is like some kind of irretrievably downer Barber Adagio, glorious, like the Barber, in its singularity of concept and plodding execution. I can see how this music would seem disastrous to some ears. But I just don't agree.

"Carousel of Lightness," sadly ironic in its melancholic stateliness, is the high point for me. Featuring gloriously severe playing from Maneri on viola buttressed by Shipp's near-ambient Korg snyth stylings and inspired percussive fills from Brown, it evokes profound feelings of Sehnsuct, of secret longing, of the sad condition of human contingency and decay.

"Weave, Pt 2," a Ware-Brown duet, closes things out magnificently. Ware here seems the inheritor of the Pharoah Sanders tonal championships. Such richness! Such depth! Such saxophonic history lightly summed up!

To me, this is music imbued with the highest order of feeling, marvelously conceived and brilliantly pulled off.

4 out of 5 stars Ware hooks it up.......2003-10-28

This isn't my favorite David S Ware record by any stretch of the imagination. This record is a total departure from his previous quartet dates, but what it does is continues to outline David S Ware's superior harmonic sensibility. Many will be turned off because he doesn't play on every track. But when he does play, his overwhelming sense of melody and harmony is showcased. Don't expect the fire from his previous records. Instead you get a taste of what makes music great in the first place.

1 out of 5 stars Ouch.....!.......2003-10-18

This one has been touted by Thom Jurek of the All Music Guide as one of the first great albums of the 21st century, & deserving of a Grammy nomination (at the least) for Ware. Hm, so what's he smoking? Anyone else I've talked to who's heard it has thought one of two things: (1) it's pretty lousy; (2) it's one of the worst discs of the year. I'm in the latter camp, myself. Anyway, here's the deal: this is David S Ware's "Strings" album, which expands the basic Shipp/Parker/Brown rhythm section with the inclusion of Mat Maneri on viola & Daniel Bernard Roumain on violin. Shipp is, furthermore, playing treacly synthesized strings for much of the album (for the rest it's synthesized organ). Ware contributes off-stage tenor on the lead-off track, & tosses in two brief tenor/drums improvs with Brown, & otherwise doesn't play at all. So the focus is mostly on his composing. Which is--let's not mince words--darned feeble. "Threads" itself is an unbelievably long & dreary string quartet piece which rocks slowly back & forth between chords. There's a really crass groove-based track, "Sufic Passages" (with some of Brown's most broomhandled drumming), and a mildly pleasant but directionless mood-music piece, "Carousal of Lightness"--each is 9 minutes long & would be a chore to sit through at half that length. I've now touched on the entirety of the album: believe it or not, there's 6 pieces, 45 minutes, of which barely anything is of any consequence. Unless they give Grammys out for Worst Jazz Disc of the Year, I'm afraid Jurek's going to be a disappointed man when awards time comes around.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-08-20

In my experience, "Threads" has been the rare kind of CD that uplifts and energizes both musically and spiritually. "In Betweens", "Desparate Men", "Threads", "Only A Fool", "Running To You"... all move me to worship God and motivate me to live out the Christian life more faithfully. One of my favorite CD's.

1 out of 5 stars Sad end to a great band.......2003-07-11

I bought this CD on my 22nd B-day, wich was just days after the death of Rich Mullins, and I alos bought Rich mullins CD "songs" (my first CD by him). I had every single Geoff Moore & the Distance CD (including a remix cd, a few cd singles and other projects their music was on). I was really looking forward to getting this cd, but felt like crying & screaming when I played it. I had heard the song "Only a fool" on the radio before I bought it and liked that song, but everything else was just poorly done. It HAS to be the producer (Tedd T.) becuase he was the aslo responsible ofr the butchering of Rebecca St. James's music (her "God" cd, the Christmas one and the "Pray" cd). All those little beeps and buzzes tottaly ruined anything good on this CD. Maybe the music would have been better otherwise, but it was just sad that such talented musicans (I saw them in concert, dang their good) put out what I consider one of the worse CD's EVER. Thank God they didn't do any more after this if this was the direction the band was headded in, too bad they had to break up. They were my favorite band back then, until this CD came out. Maybe they'll do a reunion tour someday? Hopes so, just as long as they skip anything from this CD. I STILL cant listen to it!

4 out of 5 stars Talent, passion, gritty guitars--and an unwavering message!.......2000-11-18

A little "grittier" than their previous albums, "Threads" nonetheless delivers the same sensational, step-on-your-toes messages that got me hooked on Geoff Moore and the Distance. This is hardly their best release (is topped easily by both "Home Run" and "Evolution"), but the more driving rock sound doesn't spoil the lyrics. My favorite track is "Scattering"--great one-word motto for all Christians to adopt! Turn up the bass and prepare for another awesome journey guided by some talented artists--and some passionate men of faith.

5 out of 5 stars Goeff Moore With a Passion For the Lost!.......1998-10-28

This newest album by Goeff Moore and the Distance is my all time favorite. Not only does it feature the classic rock sound of this talented Christian musician but it is compelling lyrically, if you share Goeff's passion for the lost. It comes through powerfully in songs like "Desperate Men," "Only a Fool," "Scattering," and "Declaration." The Gospel is clearly portrayed in "No Need to Explain." And if you've ever been at the end of your rope, "The Letter" will really hit home. I can't get enough of this album. It's Christian rock at its best!

5 out of 5 stars At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03

This is a reissue of "The Art of Maud Powell, a 'Victor Immortal' - complete recordings 1904-1917" prepared by the Maud Powell Foundation (Arlington, VA) in 1989. The guiding spirit behind that foundation, and project director of this collection, is Powell's biographer Karen A. Shaffer.

These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.

Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.

Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?

Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

2 out of 5 stars Excellent program selection, but overblown performances.......2006-03-27

This was a disapointment. After reading the list of songs included, I looked forward to hearing this CD. The instrumentalists are wonderful in interpretation and presentation, but the vocalists, though technically very good, seem overblown for these songs. Their performances border on the operatic, with just not the right amount of nuance for the repertoire. The soprano fares better than the male voices, but when there is a duet, they never seem to truly blend, but just compete with one another. I remember the great period recordings of Joan Morris and William Bolcolm, some of which are still available on CD(including a relatively new one- see Amazon for title and details), and this CD, though well-intentioned, never approaches that level of sophistication and purity of performance.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky and fun.......2005-07-13

I love watching minor-league hockey and after hearing "I Wanna Drive the Zamboni" at a game, I downloaded this whole CD and their other one. Who would have thought there could be so many fun songs about hockey? I love the lyrics of "Slapshot Love" - 'skating on the blue line, that's when I saw your green light, so I lined up for Slapshot love' - and "Davey Hatrick"! The music is a blend of rock, ska and even some polka ("The Goalie is Drunk", oom-pah-pah!), the Zambonis are brilliant! Hey, if it's endorsed by Mister Hockey (track 5), 'howe' can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars i love these guys.......2004-03-26

i love the zambonis. while some may feel that "most of the music and lyrics could be written by a third grader," real music fans can tell immediately that these guys rock. their songs are so happy! and there *are* songs with deeper meaning. for example, the breakaway, found on "more songs about hockey." i'm in college and i blast these guys like it's my job.

5 out of 5 stars HOCKEY MUSIC!!!.......2002-04-03

Only a jr. high student would like this CD? PLEASE! This band writes for every hockey fan in the world!

If you're a hockey fan and you haven't heard the Zambonis yet, you're really missing out. Amusing and catchy, these songs will linger with you. Perfect to listen to on a frozen pond, playing with friends or in the car on the way to a NHL game.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly garbage.......2000-02-08

Although most of the music and lyrics could be written by a third grader, the song "I want to drive the Zamboni" expresses the emotions felt by many hockey fans and ice skaters. Not for the average music fan, this CD is directed to the junior high and high school age hockey player/fan.

5 out of 5 stars Zambonis Rule Music Like The FLYERS Rule Hockey!.......2000-02-04

This album was so hard to find, but well worth it! When's the tour
