Regalo del Ciego (Blindman's Gift)

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Blindman's Gift as the CD is now titled (Formerly Y Sigue La Cosa) was actually something of a departure for the band as it was a conjunto recording rather than a sexteto, the latter being the style with which Armando had historically been linked. The difference between the sexteto and conjunto format is basically that the conjunto is a larger unit featuring a full trumpet section and an enlarged percussion battery. The conjunto has been indelibly associated with the "Marvelous Blindman" Arsenio Rodriguez, one of the most prolific, talented and inventive artists of our century. Arsenio essentially invented the Conjunto format and it is therefore no surprise that nearly half the album is dedicated to interpretations of his mesmerizing songs.

Armando Sanchez died in September of 1997, at the age of 77. This album is indeed a fitting and sadly posthumous tribute to one of the great unsung masters of Cuban music. It is our hope at RykoLatino that this release helps to put into clearer focus the profound contribution of this shy and talented gentleman and the musicians who helped promulgate his vision.

5 out of 5 stars Niiiccce! Baila!.......2005-08-29

Surely, if you were to suffer the same fate as the exiled Emperor Napolean did, you would take this CD with you as a wonderful reminder of freedom and how wonderful and joyous El Son is. The interesting thing is, if put to a blind test, you would not know that the recording is not from Cuba, but instead from New York City with musicians groomed both en La Yuma and in Cuba. Anyone who is familiar with the annual, El Baile de Mamoncillo in Queens, NY, will immediately recognize and appreciate what these dudes (Aseres) are playing; un Son...Montuno expropiado de lo más puro! My favorite is "Por Delante, No." Here you hear why Cuba has always produced music of great genius, simplicity and joy. You'll certainly want to dance to this one. Gracias a Matamoro, Nino, Arsenio, Cuní, Chappotín, Chocolate y a Armando Sánchez y René López por siempre plantar bandera. Oh, and let's not forget the assembled musicians for this date. Please add this great CD to your collection of timeless Son music.

This is some of the good old classics, very well executed and with a sooth style. For the collection? Yes, Yes.

What beautiful son. Thank God for CD's because I would've worn this album out over the past year that I've owned it. Classic songs with matching vocals and musicians. If I could have only one CD, this would be it.
