The Brandi Carlile story so far is fairly short: fresh-faced singer-song writer from rural Ravensdale, Washington, quietly releases a 2005 debut that has critics and fans reaching for their thesauruses searching for appropriate adjectives to describe her voice. Patsy Cline, Jeff Buckley, kd lang, Beth Orton, Linda Ronstadt, and Aimee Mann get name-checked as Carlile and her guitar-and-bass-playing Hanseroth twins-led band criss-cross the country for two years, first as openers, then as headliners. Cue the overproduced, disappointing follow-up album? Not so fast. On The Story, Carlile teams up with veteran roots producer T Bone Burnett, who brings in vintage equipment and strips down her sound. Instead of using overdubs, the new songs--most of which were already road-tested--are recorded live, giving the ballads and midtempo rockers a tough, uncompromising edge and a fuller, more aggressive attack. Echoes of country and folk color the bucolic "Have You Ever" and the unadorned acoustic "Cannonball," but it's the sweeping drama of the more epic-sounding "Until I Die," "Late Morning Lullaby," and the U2-styled "My Song" that leave the greatest lasting impressions. Carlile and Burnett make a perfect team: he allows her malleable voice room to soar in the mix while she brings sharp original songs that exude confidence, pride, and emotion. It's a combustive combination and one that results in a sophomore release every bit as good, and in many respects better, than her first. Stay tuned as the story continues. --Hal Horowitz

    nd it sounds great.

He also completely rearranges "Atlantic City" and "Blinded By the Light" to the point where they're all new songs. You have to play the haunting "When the Saints Go Marching In" a few times to enjoy it.

My personal favorites are "Long Time Coming" and "Further Down the Road," although there are only a few songs that I consider filler crap.

Crank it up. It's summer. It's definitely Springsteen.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

I especially like when more than one entertainer participates on the stage or a recording. It always makes it seem more original and not the set patter you usually get. I like all of these artists so the combination is fun.

"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

    Album Description

One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the rock era. Solo. Acoustic. January 19, 1971. Live At Massey Hall, the legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in highresolution stereo, in this CD+DVD package (also as a solo CD). The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). Live At Massey Hall is a newly mined rock gem.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb concert capturing an artist at his creative peak..........2007-08-03

Neil Young's 40 year career has had its high points but, while his songwriting skills shine through a great deal of his huge output, 1970 & 1971 were something special... and this brilliant live album shows why. Confident, controlled, clearly completely at home as the only man on the stage and with a string of new songs to showcase - many of which would become "Harvest" classics - this is "unplugged" music at its very best, beautifully sung & played and enhanced by crystal clear recording & engineering. And, unlike many live albums, his between song reflections and introductions add real depth & interest to the performance to produce a wonderfully effective record of what it must have been like to be there. Breathtaking stuff and an absolutely superb CD...

...and then there's the DVD. Don't think that this is a "normal" video of the concert, because it isn't... what it is is some fairly reasonable but shaky hand held film of several of the tracks interspersed with grainy film clips of Neil Young's ranch and a lot of even grainier "filler" shots of spinning tape recorders and dark silhouettes of him hunched over his piano. Intriguingly atmospheric in parts but all very odd, particularly as the BBC has an excellent high quality video, recently aired on UK TV, of him playing a shorter version of the Massey Hall concert only a month later that's not available on DVD. If this is intended to be, as it says on the liner notes, part of a "definitive" collection of his career then why not dosh out the dough and include the much, much better BBC video here, which is, after all, the most obvious place for it? Ah well, at least the other items on the DVD - including a great deal of memorabilia, videos of two tracks filmed several months later and an extensive interview with Neil Young about the period, filmed in 1997 - are genuinely interesting. But that's the man for you... brilliant (CD) and frustrating (DVD).

    5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2007-08-03

this is a great CD DVD the sound is pristine i have never heard anything from this era that sound even close if you like neil you need this

    5 out of 5 stars Intimate...almost too intimate performance.......2007-07-30

This CD/DVD captures Neil Young during a very creative time. He had just written most of the songs performed with Journey Through the Past probably only a few days old. Bad fog of loneliness, which he had never released, is a real gem.

    Get it...

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!!.......2007-07-29

In many ways Neil Young DEFINES the singer-songwriter. This treasure takes us back to 1971 just before he blew up with "Harvest". This truly captures LIVE Neil, "I'm going to do some new songs..." and when he admonishes the audience for taking pictures ( I saw him get mad at a fan for whistling and then he stopped talkig to the audience for about a half hour). Each song is a gem. I love "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Man Needs a Maid/ Heart of Gold Suite" but my all-time favorite is "On the Way Home" (what a PERFECT openning song). BUY THIS ALBUM AND TREASURE IT!!!

4 out of 5 stars better than the bootleg........2007-07-26

--Andrew Bartlett

as beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Experience With Neil Young Live.......2007-05-27

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

The world can't get enough of Madonna, and with CD/DVD sets like The Confessions Tour dropping regularly, it's little wonder why. As a thrower of fantasy dance parties, she is peerless. As a physical role model for the 40-ish women who grew up on her music, she rules. And as an arbiter of what's going to sound shockingly original in any given decade--well, duh. The Confessions Tour rounds up songs from way back--"Ray of Light" and "La Isla Bonita" make the DVD, and "Lucky Star" and "Like a Virgin" are on the CD as well as the DVD--but this concert, filmed in 2006 at London's Wembley Arena, aims its sturdiest spotlight on Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madge's 2005 disco disc. You could argue, then, that unless you're in it for the sheer DVD spectacle (and what a spectacle it is), there's no sense in owning this package. Only you wouldn't be right. Because as any on-the-ball Madonna fan knows, what she's doing musically is telling a story--you may already know the characters, but that doesn't mean she hasn't completely reworked the plot. To that end, "I Love New York" gets its rock on, "Let It Will Be" has a musical temper tantrum, and "Hung Up" goes for the drama queen award. You've heard these songs before, but you've never heard them quite like this, to borrow a bad informercial phrase. As twisted and hopped-up as they've become, they're all worth getting to know again. --Tammy La Gorce

The Confessions Tour - Live from London is other fabulous concert from our dear Madge. Some of my favorites from the concert include: Live to Tell, Jump, Like a Virgin, Ray of Light, I Love New York, Let it Will Be, and La Isla Bonita. Madonna never disappoints, she always delivers a strong show no matter if she's performing new songs or classics. My favorite theme is probably the equestrian act. This item also comes with a bonus CD. I highly recommend checking The Confessions Tour out. It's worth the money. Enjoy!

This is my favorite Madonna Concert ever. My favorite performance are future lovers, La Isla bonita, and Erotica ( best erotica mix ever) and of course Like a Virgin. Madonna showed alot of energy and showed how creative and original she always is. I cant stop watching it. Madonna Definetly is the Queen of Music.

4 out of 5 stars The Evolution of Madonna : Pink Elephants & Lemonade.......2007-06-26

Its ironic that Madonna's better stage performances are all coming late in her career. "The Confessions Tour" is by far her most artistic, musically challenging and diverse concert tour, and this package only serves to reiterate what an astounding talent she is. This review is primarily for the DVD, as the CD is just the audio of the DVD ripped anyway.

Think about this - what other 48 year old do you know who can perform aerobic dancing, sing simultaneously, and hold a note, all while wearing a bikini! Well, I certainly don't know anyone like that, and what is perhaps most astounding is just how classy the entire act is, even through the admittedly sexually charged bits.

The best thing on this 2.5 hour extravaganza is "Erotica", a completely reworked version (in actuality, Madonna sings the original version of `Erotica' she intended for release - with the lyrics of a track called "You Thrill Me"). My favorite part is the last four-song segment, where Madonna introduces her `Disco' persona. Her backup dancers as ever, defy gravity and are good-looking to boot. One dancer in particular stands out - a skinny long haired young man who is as flexible as a rubber band. However, "Erotica" has never looked so good in any of its' avatars, and I thought this version left the studio recording light years behind - its that good.

This is also the first Madonna concert to feature so much dancing. Madonna actually dances frenetically to many numbers, including a highly stylized and choreographed routine with two female backup dancers to "Music". There is also a special feature segment that shows her practicing this - unbelievable. I have had so many friends who were dancers in their 20s who didn't move like this. I still cannot believe this is a woman pushing 50.

Above all, there is the music. Tracks that seemed weak on the "Confessions" studio album, are made more accessible here. "Get Together" which I always used to skip, becomes a keeper. Similarly, weak track "Jump" is actually listenable on this one. Some of the more interesting portions of the concert involve Madonna's friend "Isaac" (who even wears a turban at one point). I thought this was Mirwais, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, when she tries to make this concert `spiritual' or `soulful', it begins to unravel. They should have just kept this entire concert upbeat and energetic.

No review would be complete without telling you the downsides of the product, and there are three here. One is the godawful version of "Isaac" that Madonna tries to pull off here. This is a poor second cousin to "Frozen", with a similar `Eastern' tinge to it (I could see where they were going with this one, but it just doesn't work). This is followed by a dreary rendition of "Drowned World" (possibly Madonna's greatest ballad), which is followed by the hideous "Paradise (Not for Me)" (which is a beautiful song, but Isaac and Madonna ruin it beyond recognition here). This should be seen to be believed. How they could massacre a simple melody like this is beyond me.

However, we're back in action with singalong versions of "Hung Up" (including a four minute shout-out/call-back to the audience where Madonna asks them to repeat "Time goes back, so slowly" in her infamously fake British accent), and "Sorry" (which has Madonna kissing one of her female dancers, and some amount of funky dancing).

Madonna sometimes exits the stage every now and then, whereupon her dancers take the spotlight and dance to a variety of Madonna collages and flash images. This is not necessarily a good thing - in fact, its downright boring. However, the `special features' on the disc, aren't really special at all. In fact, they are at best footage of Madonna rehearsing, with a tremendous amount of time spent on her dancers waxing about her in French accents ("I can't believe I'm really here", "Oh My God, I'm dancing for Madonna!", and "This is a once in a lifetime experience!" etc.). Nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly nothing to write home about. But the great thing about these is watching Madonna actually dance. Without the makeup she sports on stage, she looks much, much older, and quite tired and haggard, but who can blame her, poor thing?

All in all, this is a must-buy, even if you're not really a Madonna fan. I'm sort of neutral about her, but if I consider that I like this much more than some of the Rock DVDs I have in my collection, then Madonna must have done something right. This is a fabulous, colorful and very entertaining concert, and no one I know has ever regretted purchasing this. Yes, its very `pink' and targeted towards a gay audience in so many subliminal ways, but n Rome, portrait d'une ville, 312-1308

Over thirty years after calling it a day,the true fathers of power pop return with a sparkling set of tunes from their sold out reunion tour. Recorded at the Los Angeles show,it is apparent from the opening machine gun drums of the classic 'I Wanna Be With You' that the tour and fanatical crowds had the 'Berries' full of energy and at the top of their game. The entire band proves what those lucky enough to have seen the band in it's heyday already knew...these guys had the chops...and still do. Of special note is how great the harmonies still sound 30+ years down the road. Also mindboggling is the performance of their masterpiece 'Overnight Sensation'. From Eric Carmen's beautiful stark intro to ace guitarist Wally Bryson's perfect fills and topped with the sweetest harmonies this side of the Beach Boys,it is a great song performed perfectly.I can't praise this album enough...do youself a favor...buy it,

21 songs by Raspberries on 2 CDs with a bonus 5-song DVD, recorded live in Los Angeles during the group's reunion tour in 2005, produced by Mark Linett (Grammy-nominated for Brian Wilson's "Smile") and Eric Carmen (the band's lead singer, famed for the solo hits "All By Myself," "Make Me Lose Control" and "Hungry Eyes" (from the "Dirty Dancing" movie)). The CD booklet features liner notes written in March of 2007 by Bruce Springsteen, and includes a rare photo of John Lennon wearing a Raspberries sweatshirt. The five Cashbox Top 40 hits are here ("Go All The Way," "I Wanna Be With You," "Let's Pretend," "Tonight" and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)"), with new live covers of The Who's "I Can't Explain" and The Searchers "Needles And Pins." A sizzling, stunning production, which finally gives a bottom to the Raspberries sound: clear vocals, exquisite power chording and a stunning rhythm section add to the listener's "Ecstasy." released July 31, 2007, on Rykodisc Records.

Perhaps it's the color scheme and imagery on the slipcase art for Live at the Gorge, recalling Roger Dean's classic 1970s-era album jackets, but this 7-disc set of live Pearl Jam feels warmly retro. Fans will concur, of course, since the 100 tracks favor Ten and Vs. And let's not kid ourselves, it'll be mostly committed fans that buy Gorge, given the sprawl and the fact that several tunes appear three times. That fact alone is retro: Fans buy live albums; generalists stay away. What fans will get--and generalists miss--here is an old-school, road-proved rock throwdown, from start to finish. Eddie Vedder's connection to fans is palpable in the between-song chatter and the Brit-style sing-a-longs (not to mention the Tom Petty goading he has going strong on the 2005 gig or the two appearances of Petty's "I Won't Back Down"). The general soundscape goes like this: The 2005 set is somber and slow-to-build, with its highlight in "I Believe in Miracles" as a show-opener. The 2006 discs, all four of them, are heated and gritty, with the final show's opening, "Severed Hand," providing a great vantage point into Pearl Jam's version of what Keith Richards calls "guitar weaving." It was a sweltering day at the Gorge (in George, Washington, no less), and the music embodies the heat. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A BAND MEANT TO BE RECORDED LIVE.......2007-08-06

Make no mistake about it, the studio efforts from this group present the initial readings of their songs. But none of them come to life with the same urgency, warts and all, as they do in a live context.
I like Live CDs for the same reason that I like live shows - there is an energy there that is never in the studio, and that's what music is about in any discipline. You absolutely need a dialectic between the audients and the musicians, both actively engaged, for anything like Music to lean over and take all and everyone into its confidence. LSO in the classical world do only live CDs and they are always among the best each year.
In the case of Pearl Jam, they are meant to be heard live and certainly few other artists give you so much in quantity and quality. That said, I wouldn't suggest listening to these straight through. You'd be better served with a significant break between each date. The initial September show is spectacular - one of their very best. The succeeding July shows are each enthusiastic roars for the home town crowd, and there is an abundance of commitment from both sides of the mic on display. I can hardly wait for blu-ray editions of this Band's work.
I have no favourites among the discs or the songs, they are all delivered witha sense of urgency. The musicianship is stellar throughout. Yet each time I hear them do Young's "Rocking in the Free World" I sincerely wish that they would collaborate again. There is an absolutely hillarious anecdote that Vedder tells on the Sepetmeber disc, but we'll leave that for you to discover.
All in all, a constant trajectory of superb performances continues from thsi band, and no matter how many times I hear them do a particular song, I seem to find something else interesting in each performance.

Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands, I own all of their studio albums and believe few bands have the talents and range of this band. The problem with most of PJs "bootlegs" is the sound quality. This set finally delivers excellent sound and shows Pearl Jam in their world, live, where they make other current rock acts like "nickelback" look like children's music.
This is a must buy for any Pearl Jam fan... my single complaint is thier are nor liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Live Shows.......2007-07-10

Pearl Jam have put out so many live records/bootlegs its hard to even count, but these 3 shows from the Gorge will always be considered to be some of their best. I know many PJ fans say these shows were in the top 5 best shows of the bands 2006 tour. Thats saying something because the band is 95% of the time just flat out incredible live. Im sure people have their own opinions about which of these shows was the best. I can just say that if you love their music or are wanting to get into the bands music this is the best place to start. The band sounds so fresh and energetic here. The whole box set sounds amazing and was remastered very well with everything sounding VERY crisp and clean. The setlists cover a wide variety of songs that are just played perfect for the most part. There are very few mistakes or flub ups made by the band during these shows. There is actually only about 3 or 4 that really stick out and with 3 whole shows clocking in over 7 hours that aint bad. The band was most certainly tight during those shows.

The first show recorded on September 1st 2005, not September 5th like the box says, is the second best show of the set in my eyes. The first disc of this show is just incredible and is worth 40 bucks alone. The band opens up with I Believe In Miracles. Ive NEVER heard a version of this song I liked better. Its really the best Ive ever heard, not to mention a lot of other PJ fans can agree. The takes on Low Light, I Am Mine, Crazy Mary, and Black are also some of the best Ive heard. When I was listening to Black on that disc I actually cried! Ive heard the song hundreds of times, but that version did it for me. The only mistake on this disc is where Eddie messes up the lyrics on Off He Goes, but its forgivable and he just laughs it off. I cant forget the awesome version of Hard To Imagine. The band doesnt play this one much, so its certainly a huge plus. Eds voice has never sounded better. Whoever thinks Ed Vedder has lost his pipes should listen to this. The second disc starts off with the only version of Given To Fly I even listen to. I think the song is overplayed, but this one has the energy like no other. Other stong takes on this disc are Last Exit, Save You, Alone, Sad, Not For You, Dissident, and Undone. Some of those songs are hard to come by live and they are played perfect. Ed messes up on Do The Evolution and Insignificance, but I believe he just got too excited. Disc 3 also has a few good versions of Love Boat Captain, Last Kiss, and Blood. Theres the version of I Wont Back Down thats a little rusty, but is played better on the third show of the box set. The September 1st show was a great one. Really an all around perfect live performance.

The second show recorded on July 22nd 2006 is my personal favorite out of the entire box set. It makes my top 10 favorite PJ shows for sure. The setlist, the energy, and the whole vibe is just WOW. Not to mention the show opens up with a killer take on Wash. I havent got the room to type all the great versions on this show because nearly all are great! The ones that stick out the most as being special are Hail Hail, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Black, Insignificance, Life Wasted, and Blood on the first disc. The second disc is the real treat in my eyes. So many awesome songs that are played perfect. Once, Alive now Ed can certainly belt this one out, State of Love and Trust played so sweetly, Leash, Porch, Inside Job, and Go are all just mind blowingly excellent. The performance of Last Kiss is most likely the best Ive heard... ever. I usually dont like the song live, but its really good here. I didnt list Footsteps because this version is in a league of its own. My God, Ed has never sung the song better. It sends little chills through my whole body. Cant forget Dirty Frank, this song isnt played much at all. Its really cool to hear this live. Ed can still sing it good too. This show is just fantastic anyway you can look at it.

The last show from the Gorge Box Set is my least favorite, but is by no means anywhere near bad. Its still incredible, but compared with the other two shows it lacks. The first disc is the best of this show. I love opening up with Severed Hand. Other really great versions are In Hiding where Eds voice sounds great, Marker In The Sand, and Army Reserve sounds better here than on the studio version. This discs last 5 songs are just pure intense energy. Its so good to hear Garden, Jeremy, and Why Go played with so much energy and raw passion. Garden sounds better here than on the studio version for sure. Its another song where Ed sounds better now than he ever has. I cant believe people say the band sounded better in the early 90s. They sound better here to me. The second disc has good takes on Life Wasted, Big Wave, Satans Bed, Alive, and a wicked version of Crazy Mary. So this show can really hold its ground as being awesome too.

If you read all this Im sorry its long, but with 7 whole discs of music theres a lot to cover. I highly recommend this set to anyone who likes rock music or is just a casual PJ fan. You cant beat 7 discs for 40 bucks. This set just shows how great this band is, how talented, and how hard these boys still rock. God, I wish I could have been a teen in the 90s to hear them!

Longtime listeners have seen it coming: it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland"--but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on Try. If the muscled-up covers of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" don't scream "no more Mr. Nice Guy" loud enough, the brawn of blues-rock opener "Who Do You Think I Was" does for sure. Mixed in with the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton-esque stuff are a few mellow numbers--"Daughters," most notably, returns from Heavier Things alongside "Something's Missing"--but even those songs seem hopped up on rock-God hormones. This newfound sizzle can't fix everything; that segment of the music-buying public that would accuse the singer of having a voice like "a whispering midget" (to quote a customer review of Mayer's work) won't want to add this disc to their collection. The good news for Mayer, though, is that anybody with an ear for genuine rock'n'roll chops will. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars John Mayer does it with a twist!.......2007-08-07

Great album as a whole. This really does show off Mayer's musicianship and creativity with the Trio. The maturity shown from Mayer's performance in this CD is refreshing and fills the listener with quite a bit of excitement and surprise. His solo in Gravity put a smile on my face, immediately pushing me to show it off to my friends.

The album isn't flawless, as there are annoying Mayer obsessors with Pre-adult screeches scattered throughout the album, but appreciating the musical aspect of the album makes it well worth the buy.

    5 out of 5 stars I wasn't a John Mayer fan until I heard this album.......2007-07-31

I hadn't heard anything from John Mayer in a while. I had given up on him when he came out with his first album, which was a little too "poppy" for my taste. I usually go for oldies, stevie ray vaughn and hendrix among some of my favorites (though I'm only 24). My friend gave me this album and told me I should try it and to trust him. I absolutely loved this album when I first heard it. Each song is more soulful than they were on their original albums. I actually prefer the versions of "Daughters" and "Gravity" on this album. The versions of these songs make the original versions sound like like the "plain, unsalted" versi Sublimes

Recorded at the 1979 Havana Jazz Festival, this short and powerful set, with Miles Davis alumni, drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin, and Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius, was one for the ages. The previously unreleased selections, one through five, are explosive, but mis-miked live tracks. Williams' "Drum Improvisation" segues into McLaughlin's fuzz-toned "Dark Prince," which does not swing in a silent way. Pastorious' theme song "Continuum" is scaled down to its essential twilight textures, while the drummer's "Para Oriente" - which later became a stable in V.S.O.P's book, and was recast as "Angel Street" - is rendered here in a funky, pre-grunge mode. The guitarist's "Are You the One, Are You the One?" previews the jam band craze. The rest of the cuts were recorded a week later in a New York studio, But the warts-and-all original sides are unmatched for their primal power. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

2 out of 5 stars The Bay of Gigs.......2007-08-05

Other than a great drum solo by Tony Williams that starts this disc out, there is really nothing here to listen to. McLaughlin was never happy with the group in the first place, and Pastorius was going through a great deal of personal problems during this time. I bought this out of curiousity, knowing that McLaughlin never really wanted this project released at all, (although a studio cut made it on the Havana Jam LP around '79-'80) You're better off spending your money on both the new best of McLaughlin and Pastorius CD's that just came out. You can get this if you're really that curious, but don't expect much.

4 out of 5 stars Trio Of Delight.......2007-07-18

It would be very difficult to put together a more powerful trio of Fusion giants on one disc. Jaco was and is the greatest electric bass player that ever lived. And Tony Williams was probably one of the most creative drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks. As far as John McGlaughlin, need I say more than Mahavishnu Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Glad to hear it finally make it from the vault.......2007-07-12

Tony Williams is a monster on this album. Jaco is Jaco and McLaughlin is McLaughlin, but to hear Tony play in this setting is amazing. If you're a fan of any of the three - buy it. If you're a drummer, this better be a part of your collection. You'll go crazy trying to figure out how Tony does what he does (how about the hands/feet roll during his drum improv...wow).

4 out of 5 stars unrealized potential (and other thoughts).......2007-07-11

It is amazing that these 3 seminal musicians only got together for 40 minutes of music. John McLaughlin, arguably the most musically wide-ranging guitarist I've ever heard; Jaco Pastorius, maybe the greatest electric bass player ever; and Tony Williams, one of the top 5 scariest drummers in jazz/rock. Unfortunately, this recording isn't the best one for either of these guys; probably more time spent playing together would've done the trick, therefore my review title. Unfortunately, this will never happen, as 2 of them are dead. As far as Sony keeping these recordings in their vault; well, we all know what motivates these companies, and it isn't music, so don't hold your breath for unreleased treasures seeing the light of day (hey, where's that McLaughlin/Hendrix recording that supposedly exists). Speaking of McLaughlin, check out his short gig on the Crossroads Blues Festival 2-dvd set (featuring Clapton and other blues icons), where he plays with Dennis Chambers and Zakir Hussain. The guitar playing is amazing, in case anybody thought he had "lost" anything in the past 30 years. In fact, I was shocked. Getting back to Trio of Doom, I think Jaco really holds this thing together. Comments, everybody?

4 out of 5 stars Trio of Doom vs Havana Jam 1/2.......2007-07-07

John McLaughlin should receive full credit for making this 1979 performance available. It has been well worth the wait, given that on Havana Jam 1/2 only three tracks were included, "The Dark Prince", "Continuum" and "Para Oriente". On this CD there is "Are You The One, Are You The One?" (live) plus the live versions of the three tracks mentioned above on one single CD. The recordings give new insights into the version of "Are You The One, Are You The One?" featured on "Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist" as well as "The Dark Prince" on The One Truth Band's " Electric Dreams".
