Some inspired music has arrived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (mainly on New Orleans-themed benefit albums), but nothing as audaciously ambitious as this cross-generational collaboration between Crescent City mainstay Allen Toussaint and former British upstart turned adventurously eclectic veteran Elvis Costello. As a songwriter, producer, and arranger, Toussaint has been responsible for hits from artists ranging from Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Lee Dorsey to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle. Costello, long a huge fan of Toussaint's music, sings relatively familiar fare such as "On Your Way Down" and "Freedom for the Stallion" from Toussaint's extensive songbook along with obscurities mainly recorded by Dorsey. Toussaint supplies his distinctive piano and horn arrangements--as well as lead vocals on "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"--with Costello's Imposters serving as the rhythm section. Yet the real revelation comes from the new material, including the title track (a searing Costello composition in the Toussaint soul-spiritual mode) and five new Costello/Toussaint compositions that spotlight Toussaint's signature sound without diminishing Costello's creative contributions. What could have been a curiosity is instead a hallmark in the catalog of each artist. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
The River in Reverse is Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint's spirited and deeply soulful new album, including seven songs from Toussaint's remarkable catalog; five newly written by the two; and one new song, the title track, written by Costello. Sessions for the album took place over a whirlwind two weeks late last year in Hollywood, CA and at Piety Street Studios in Toussaint's hometown of New Orleans. Produced by Joe Henry, the album masterfully combines Costello's band the Imposters with Toussaint's horn section (Amadee Castenell, Joe Smith, Sam Williams, and Brian Cayolle) and guitarist (Anthony Brown). Toussaint led the ensemble from the piano, with Imposters keyboard player Steve Nieve switching to Hammond B3. The majority of the tracks were cut with the entire group in the room and Costello singing live, occasionally adding his guitar to the mix. Costello selected songs from deep within the Toussaint catalogue such as "Nearer To You," "Freedom for the Stallion," and "Tears, Tears and More Tears." Toussaint kicks off the lead vocal on his composition, "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?" and trades vocal lines with Costello and bassist Davey Faragher on several other tracks. All of the horn arrangements are marked with Toussaint's distinctive style and, commented Costello, "add a second voice" to the title track, the one song that Costello wrote alone. Just before the recording began, the duo holed up in New York to write together throughout October, a quick-moving process that resulted in four songs on the album of various combinations of words and music. The songwriting collaboration began with Costello writing lyrics for Toussaint's beautiful minor key variation of Professor Longhair's "Tipitina." The resulting piece is now entitled "Ascension Day." Other new titles include "The Sharpest Thorn," "Broken Promise Land," and "International Echo." Toussaint previously produced a 1983 Costello cover of Yoko Ono's "Walking on Thin Ice" with the Attractions and the T.K.O. Horns, and also contributed piano to the New Orleans-recorded "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" from Costello's 1989 album Spike. Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Toussaint relocated to New York City, where the two renewed their musical friendship at several benefit concerts and club gigs during a seven-day period from the 17th of September, leading to discussions of this new album. The powerful song "The River in Reverse" was written by Costello on September 24th, 2005, and performed by him for the first time at that night's "Parting the Waters" benefit event organized by the The New Yorker magazine.

As well as any record he's ever made, this Bruce Cockburn release illustrates just what makes him so compelling and tough to corner. Opening with a well-greased John Lee Hooker groove, Cockburn slides from a dream in which he'd "been wearing O.J.'s gloves" and couldn't get them off, into the stranger, waking world of punks, cafes, tourists, and journalistic half-truths. From his ceaseless wanderings, Cockburn has absorbed Brazilian, African, and Eastern musical accents. More importantly, he has a traveler's vision, always in awe of far-flung mysteries. His guitar work remains a marvel of rhythmic complexity and technical precision (the bloated fuzz reading of "Blueberry Hill," however, is an exception). Spoken word trances; white-hot Metheny-esque instrumentals; Dylan-esque cryptographies of politics and sex; and metaphysical love lyrics (three of which feature harmony from Lucinda Williams)--there's an off-hand, unpretentious ambition to these songs, a visceral sense of spiritual and artistic fulfillment. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
Lyric brilliance backed by strong music.......2006-05-15
Cockburn's gritty singing style is most effective, often touching listeners as though sung only for them. And although some dislike the talking-style technique he uses with some songs, it fits well with that personal and poetic approach. While the musical styles vary - Cockburn's fine bluesy guitar instrumentals sit alongside a laid back re-make of "Blueberry Hill" and some African-tinged pieces - most will seek out this album for its lyric brilliance. The fact that the musical quality is so high is a bonus.
His Twenty Eighth Album.......2004-12-16
Now if you ask me, and a lot of aficionados of geographic oddities do now and again, the title of this album describes a feat that would be surprisingly difficult to pull off. Bruce claims that he actually did that one day, ate breakfast in New Orleans, and ate his dinner in Timbuktu, and I ain't about to suggest the man is fibbin' but that sure would be a logistical conundrum. What with the curvature of the earth and the sun advancing to the west, and the Coriolis Effect and the uncertain air connections between Louisiana and Mali... that one is a noggin' scratcher if there ever was one.
The odd title hides a very nice album, however, and the highlight is (in my humble and accurate opinion) the harmonization that Lucinda Williams offers on a couple of cuts. She is the perfect companion to the Cockburn style, and her voice is the yin to the Cockburn yang.
This album saw Cockburn put the electric guitars back in the rack, and reach for the acoustic guitars a little more frequently than he had done in the previous albums. That allowed for a little more of an airy feel to the work and a lightness that was not so present in the previous release. I kind of appreciate that because I was starting to miss the lightness of his early folksy days and wanted to hear some more of that acoustic picking he is known for. I hear he uses super glue on his finger tips so he can really get in there and pluck hard against the strings, and whatever the technique is - it works.
This album also features Cockburn covering someone else's tune - something that doesn't happen in the studio very often. I am still wondering why. Blueberry Hill is a great song, and his cover is a nice touch, but does it fit in this album? I ain't too sure. It is awfully hard to get Fats Domino out of my head when I hear Bruce sing it.
I recommend this album as a terrific place to start if you are not familiar with his latter work... or if you just want to listen to some good, toe tappin' tunes while you drive your truck to town. Me and Junior like this one a lot and listen to it whenever we go in to the feed store to pick up rat bait.
Great!.......2004-06-14
What a treasure of creativity and positive energy this man is...I would love him to produce one of my songs, like "Sister."
There are not many with the talent this man has. :)

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.
Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.
Best Sound Track Ever.......2005-03-20
Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12
The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.
There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.
Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.
Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16
George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....
Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.
But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

The funniest Schickele piece ever!.......2006-05-23
It should be noted that the Amazon listing is incorrect. The 1712 Overture is in reality conducted by "Walter Bruno" who is actually David Zinman. It is most assuredly not conducted by Bruno Walter (can you imagine that?), who died in 1962.
Highly recommended.
P D Q on form again.......2005-07-20
Classical music, like any living corpus of cultural tradition (eg religion, sport & politics) should be well capable of laughing at itself. Others have done so successfully (Hoffnung, Spike Jones, the Comedy Harmonists et al.) and PDQ follows in a worthy & rollicking tradition!
beware of the organ cadenza!.......2005-05-18
Einstein on the Fritz is a tonic to anyone sick of the pretentious meanderings of Philip Glass, Taverner et al. And Cappricio La Poucelle de New Orleans (engineered by Burt Bach, a living direct decendant of JS Bach) is frighteningly intense, as well as hysterical. These musicians are also terrific - the pieces wouldn't work at all otherwise. And who couldn't love the rapturous intro to The Preachers of Crimetheous - featuring the most incredible percussion playing since Ginger Baker's 'Toad'.
All in all, this is a completely ridiculous delight!
Another assault to your funny bone!.......2004-04-12
PDQ Bach at his best (worst).......2001-11-13
the 1712 overture pokes fun at just about every type of music out there, and what the 1712 doesn't defile, the rest of the tracks on this CD pick up the slack.
This incredibly irreverent album is a must for music lovers everywhere!

A Joyful Rage.......2007-06-23
The DVD is excellent as well. Typically, these are just a few videos and some scenes in the studio. The footage here of Toussaint returning to his hometown, as well as some hot live performances, could easily have made a compelling feature documentary. (And have we ever seen footage of Elvis recording an album?)

Such a waste..........2006-10-06
Another Sharp Collaboration for Costello Who Gains Gravitas With the Soulfully Erudite Toussaint.......2006-08-24
Together, Costello and Toussaint wrote five tracks, the best of which are the swinging, sardonic "Broken Promise Land" and the jaunty, inexplicably titled "International Echo". However, the best cuts are definitely the Toussaint compositions beginning with the opening song, the mournful "On Your Way Down". Several, well-turned love songs add to the texture of the blend, such as "Nearer to You" and "All These Things". It's not all dark moods as the driving "Tears, Tears and More Tears" makes a nice contrast, and Toussaint effortlessly takes the lead vocal on the soulful "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further". There is an invaluable DVD included, the half-hour documentary, "Putting the River in Reverse", which chronicles the recording sessions, one of which took place in New Orleans, the first major session after Katrina. Visually as well as aurally, an erudite, impeccably dressed Toussaint makes a striking contrast to the still-grungy Costello. Just as he proved with his wonderful Burt Bacharach collaboration and his orchestral work, Costello can complement his eclectic style in the most unusual of settings.
Soulful masterpiece.......2006-07-14
"Nearer to You" is a great track, as well as "Tears, Tears and More Tears", which somehow reminds me of old Motown without trying too hard. "The River in Reverse" is probably the best song in the album but then again, all the songs are really good anyway so it's almost like saying that a beautiful woman in a room full of them is the prettiest.
This is a strongly recommended purchase, not to mention that there is a nice behind the scenes dvd that comes with select pressings of this album.

Mac Rebennack's long commercial drought finally ended in the late '80s with In a Sentimental Mood, an album of pop standards bearing almost no connection to New Orleans R&B roots. His album-opening duet with Rickie Lee Jones, "Making' Whoopee," was a big hit after it was included on the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack, and it's easy to understand why Harry Connick Jr. fans who'd bought When Harry Met Sally were seduced by this coy come-on. Still, it's odd to hear Rebennack's scruffy baritone in service to such lush, sweeping orchestration (and to hear him sing a line like "I've got a sweet tooth for your sweet heart"). The Doctor does lend a nice bluesy feel to a Satchmo favorite, "My Buddy," and to Charles Brown's classic, "Black Night," and his version of "More Than You Know" is a small miracle of understatement. --Keith MoererCustomer Reviews:

Live in New Orleans.......2006-06-26
Frankie Beverly is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/ performers ever in my book and even though he is pushing 60 yrs of age, he still puts on a better show than the slew of tween & twenty-something r&b male singers of today's generation. The band is TIGHT and whenever they perform in Philly, I am there with bells on!!
The great thing about this group & this album is the rapport that Frankie has with the crowd; the call & response portions where he lets the audience "sing" in his place and truly the energy that I as a listener can hear & feel just listening to this album.
I'm sure fans of this dynamic group already have this album in their collection and although I'm disappointed that the cd wasn't mastered directly from the album version, "newbies" still can't go wrong in adding it to their collection. This group really is the platinum standard of what an r&b band should be!!
My all time favorite R&B band .......2006-04-09
never went commercial. The band has stuck to what they feel,
rocking west coast R&B and silky soul.I live on the east coast
and the band doesn't play many shows out my way. If they ever
do,I will be the first ticket buyer and front and center at the
show.

Get Valence Street if you want a fantastic recent Nevilles album (track 1 "Over Africa" is simply amazing), and you must own Brother's Keeper and my #1 favorite recording overall, Yellow Moon. Don't pass up this record.......2004-12-10
This new record represents a true culmanation of the talent of the Nevilles - not just the four brothers but several offspring that join in to help imploy some modern recording techniques and greatly improve the end result. The songs are strong, personal and socially aware. They are varied yet very cohesive - pure New Orleans R&B / Funk.
I hope the Grammy people don't get too consumed with the current trend to synthetic grooves, and still have time to appreciate and honor some of the masters of the organic traditions.
