5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of a Master.......2003-11-07

I guess I'm not qualified to evaluate whether this is the best collection of Chenier's work, but this is a great collection. I was surprised that Chenier is a pretty good blueman, but the Zydeco numbers are the best, and that's why most people want to listen to. I suppose alternating the blues with the zydeco balances the collection.

The interview at the end of the CD starts to meander, but I was surprised to hear Chenier say he invented Zydeco mostly to distiguish himself from other musicians, rather than some compelling need to create a new musical form.

There maybe a better collection out there, but this was good enough for me!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection!!!.......2003-07-23

A great introduction to the best singer/accordionist in the history of Zydeco, this collection features a mix of Chenier's classic Zydeco standards, like "Ay, ai, ai" and "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" as well as some great blues numbers. One of the strengths of this title, as well as a weakness, is that longtime Chenier producer Chris Strachwitz set out to highlight Chenier's blues abilities, which are considerable. Chenier was an outstanding blues singer, but the price for the inclusion of each blues number is the exclusion of a Zydeco masterpiece (although the listener never feels shorted, as there is not a bad cut on the whole album). I suppose it is a six of one, half a dozen of the other, with the high level of blues actually adding another facet to the King of Zydeco (if the quality were any less, then I might complain, but as it is, it's really perfect).

Overall, the album is outstanding: some of the best Zydeco music ever made, interspersed with top-notch blues and topped off with a fascinating interview, which, along with a previously unreleased version of "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" make this interesting even to a long-time Clifton Chenier fan.

5 out of 5 stars Chenier's happy, cool sound rocks!.......2007-05-22

like most dumb white guys, my first exposure to zydeco came through stuff like Paul simon's GRACELAND and the name Clifton Chenier stuck in my brain. A couple of decades later, our library has a few choice buckwheat Zydeco CDs on file and finally, here's the king of 'em all, Clifton Chenier, washboard, electric guitar and accordian: how cool is that? If I'da known how incredibly awesome an accordian can sound, i'da taken lessons.

You can't hate the accordian when its played right, and here, it is sterling.

This is killer blues and real zydeco: happy and sad mixing together like sweet and sour ribs. You CANNOT go wrong with this CD; put it on and feel better. HMOs should give it out to people; we all get the blues, but a well-worn bluesman celebrates our ability to appreciate that we can, really, feel lousey and love it. Great blues embraces our humanity and serves it up hot, like dancing in the street on the Day of the Dead. Chenier's sound is simple and magical stuff; and while you're unlikely to find it on the radio outside of Chicago's WXRT or satellite stations, here it is to buy and own for yourself, and support a genre that should never, ever end.

Amazon.com essential recording

Having won unanimous praise as a high-water mark in the zydeco and Cajun traditions, Bogalusa Boogie should have a place reserved for it in any collection of American music. It's got enough driving energy to hold its weight against any rock recording of the mid-1970s, when it was recorded in one day. It's got a trawler full of zydeco soul, too, riding a percussion wave built from the King of Zydeco's brother Cleveland Chenier's rub-board and Robert St. Julian's lag-time blues drumming. Leading the Red Hot Louisiana Band from behind his brawny, always-on accordion, Clifton Chenier charges through "Ride 'Em Cowboy" with devil-may-care abandon and then slinks into a chilled blues on "I May Be Wrong," riffing his accordion off the sax and guitar in splendid contrast. Chenier never sounded better on record than here, and for that fact alone, this is a must-have. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The King of Zydeco.......2007-01-02

I got this record back when I was in school when Clifton was still burning down the house on Saturday nights down here on the bayou. You couldn't help but be taken away by the backbeat groove of this band. Zydeco was initially the black mans cranked up cajun music. Nowadays, it can be heard all over South Louisiana in various forms.
But here is the man who really put it on the map and it still sounds as good today as it did thirty years ago. Just listen to the contemporaries around the South who still move to that beat.

5 out of 5 stars Great listening!.......2003-12-22

My first and favorite Clifton Chenier recording. Very approachable music even for the uninitiated. I agree with a previous reviewer that if you only try one zydeco CD, this should be the one. Clifton is absolutely "the man" when it comes to hard rockin' zydeco accordion music. If "Allons a Grand Coteau" doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will. This is a killer recording and should be in everyone's collection. Don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Vas-y Clifton! (Go Clifton!).......2000-05-19

This is the ultimate zydeco album and with good reason. It's loaded with non-stop party music that's quick to capture the spirit of the genre (and its geographical importance) with incredible power, passion and soul. The album initially earned top reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and became an essential title. The ensemble performance is superb: Paul Sénégal's guitar, Cleveland Chenier's rub-board, John Hart's tenor sax, Joe Brouchet's bass and Robert St.Julian's drums all assist and add weight to Le Roi's accordion work. All these cuts are downright classic, too! Check out "Allons A Grand Coteau", "Quelque Chose Sur Mon Idée" or "Ma Mama Ma Dit". It's guaranteed to cure your blues and get you snappin' in no time flat. Remarkably, this music has aged so little since it first appeared on (originally) LP and on CD. It's immediacy is stunning, its performances sharp and the production still solid (the album was originally recorded in 1975). It's why Clifton Chenier (and it's pronouced Shay-nee-ay) ended up being crowned the King... Want only 1 zydeco album? Get this. But, believe me, you'll want more and more and more once you listen to this great disc!

5 out of 5 stars Ride 'Em - Right on!.......1999-09-13

"Ride 'Em Cowboy" alone would be worth the price of the CD, but this collection has many winners. Highly addictive! To know Clifton Chenier is to love the CD. Not to know him would be shame.

4 out of 5 stars Don't know much about zydeco..........2006-03-28

I only lived in New Orleans for a year, but this album was given to me long before I moved there. As the title states, I don't know much about zydeco, but having visited many a festival, I can say that I like the sound on this album better than nearly anything I've heard. Someone mentioned something about it being blues...perhaps that is why. Some of the zydeco played at festivals these days sounds more like country or oldies (3/4/waltz timing I suppose). I knew this was a gem when for my bachelorette party we went to the Rock n' Bowl and a decent zydeco band was there and they played half of the songs from this CD...

I think this is a great album to introduce yourself to zydeco...whether you turn out to be a fan of the genre, you will be sure to be a fan of this one.

    5 out of 5 stars I Don't Know Why .......2005-02-02

I like Clifton Chenier better when I can't understand him, but I do. I can understand him the least on this album, so it's my favorite. If you like good accordian blues you can't understand, and you can't speak cajun french, then this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Clifton Chenier.......2000-06-25

Chenier performed and recorded a lot of his music in Cajun French. This is one such recording. Please do not let any language barrier put you off. This is vintage Clifton Chenier, robust, rythmic, pulsating, guaranteed to lift you off your seat and send you perambulating into the night. "Blues De Ma Negress," the second song on the CD, is classic, lilting Zydeco. You don't have to know the lyrics to understand the intent. It's pure Cajun Blues. I actually prefer the classic Cajun-French Zydeco to the "homogenized" brand. It seems purer and more authentic, even though I understand only about a quarter of the lyrics. "J'Ai Conet, C'Est Pas Ma Femme" has a particularly personal meaning for me these days. If you want to hear a down-home, Bayou version of one of the only truly indigenous brands of American Jazz left on the planet, give this recording a try.

Here is where the Chenier legend began. This disc contains the 12 Bumps Blackwell-produced tracks Clifton cut in 1955 in Los Angeles for Specialty Records. On tracks like "The Cat's Dreamin'" or his first hit single, "Ay 'Tète Fey" (which is the Cajun-French form of its better-known title, "Eh, Petite Fille" meaning "Hey, Little Girl"), Chenier's amalgam of blues, R&B, and rock & roll mixed with traditional French dance tunes is still rough but already has the power and drive that he (and his accordion) would later hone to a fine edge. Instrumental greats and mainstays of Chenier's early road bands like tenor saxman Lionel Prevost and guitarist Lonesome Sundown add their considerable talents to these sessions. The starting point for any comprehensive Chenier collection. --Robert Baird

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-04-15

Truly a great disc. This is the blues, but unlike any blues you've heard before. My only complaint is its too short.

5 out of 5 stars King of the Bayou Blues.......2002-09-06

In this 1955 session, Clifton Chenier and his Zodico Ramblers laid down track after track of greasy, back-beat shuffles and boogies for the Specialty Record Label. Rolling instrumentals like "Boppin' the Rock," "Zodico Stomp" and "Opelousas Hop" demonstrate Chenier's masterful touch and wonderful delivery on the accordion, an instrument not normally associated with the blues; that said, this recording is unmistakably a blues record.

Ironically, one of the most interesting elements of this recording has little to do with music. "Eh, Petite Fille," offers listeners an example Creole. Creole is a blending of two or more pidgin (simplified) languages resulting in the synthesis of language that is adopted as the "mother tongue" by a group of people. Creole languages are spoken all over the world but the blend of French, English, and several African dialects merged in Louisiana to create a uniquely American language.

"Bayou Blues" is an entertaining record that often belies the outstanding musicianship of Chenier and his Zodico Ramblers. While Clifton Chenier may not have been the "King of the South" as he proclaimed, he certainly was the King of the Bayou Blues.
