Imuhar [Import]

Philippe Eidel has done a number of projects in his career, including producing tracks on rai star Khaled's Sahra and producing the outstanding Mammas CD, which successfully teamed North African and European women vocalists. This release features music Eidel brought to the soundtrack of the film Imuhar, Une Legend. The movie tells the story of a young boy who leaves France to discover the land of his father, the vast African nation of Niger. Eidel also guides us through Europe and Niger. His musical route blends the best of both worlds and adds to the mix the slide guitar of globetrotting American bluesman Bob Brozman. To Eidel's credit he focuses on the musical roots, for the most part avoiding the imposition of the heavy beat dictated by discotheques. As a result the music is deep and engaging and offers an aural glimpse of a little-heard African nation. --Jeff Grubb

5 out of 5 stars Afternoon in the sahara.......2001-08-16

Both the editorial review and the last one do no justice to this absolutely superb music from the north of Niger. It is a soundtrack to the film of the same name tracking a boy s journey from France back to the little known African country of Niger to find his roots...the music is Touareg comprising some traditional guitar melodies of the Sahara in Niger, soaring vocals in Tamachek mostly sung by a male and occasional weeping voices of African women and a chorus of children...the production is very modern sometimes almost too contemporary in places especially when the north african accordian comes in on one piece with a slight dance beat other than that the cd is of dreamy saharan afternoons and the vastness of the desert...the independent spirit of the touaregs...beautiful melodies and rhythyms throughout...makes me feel like I am back in Niger all over again...

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-04-29

Guitar prowess, undeniable melodies, and a wicked groove on many songs. Anybody who thinks that all the danceable rhythms are contained to European and American cutting edge techo danceclubs are sure to have their horizons broadened upon first listen to "Imuhar." This album, however, has the tendency to employ childlike voices on many of the songs - a little annoying, but easy to overcome once the slide guitar kicks in on tracks like "Toumast."

Good stuff. Enjoy.
