This aptly titled album recorded in the 1950s, captures a broad range of flamenco. It features the rapid-fire guitar runs of El Niño de Alicante with passionate singing by El Pili and Enrique Montoya as well as the rhythmic dances of Mario Alvarez with castanets by Anita Ramos. It epitomizes the furious climax of the flamenco in a way that few other albums do. The tracks on this collection are an excellent representation of some of flamenco's different styles, which make it a comprehensive introduction to the genre for the uninitiated as well as a welcome addition to any flamenco fan's collection.

Flawed package, great artist.......2004-12-01

It is a treat to hear Sabicas' unaccompanied guitar work, but the packaging is inexplicably careless. It's more than the problem of skipping on the first track, or its repetition. The last FIVE tracks are repetitions of earlier tracks, and the insert gives no information about the songs, their traditions, or the artist, a man with a very interesting story. The insert also only has a sadly patronizing little bit about "authentic" music, but nothing on what that this authenticity means or why it is so fascinating.

The Greatest Artist.......2003-12-07

I grew up listening to Sabicas on my father's old 78 rpm record. He had Segovia and some others but Sabicas was always his favorite and mine, too!

Over the years, it has gotten misplaced so I am so excited to be able to give him Sebicas, the greatest artist for Christmas.

WOW!! Legendary playing of beautifully traditional songs. It's impossible to say anything negative about this disc either from a musician or listener view point. We are lucky to have recordings of a genious in action like this. surprisingly good production as well. yeah, the 1st track has a skip - who cares. six stars. Ole!!

Amazing Flamenco Guitar.......2001-08-01

This album shows the virtuosity of Sabicas, unencumbered by Cante (singing) or any other accompaniment--it is solely solo guitar. The album includes traditional flamenco styles (like Guajiras, Farruca, and Verdiales) as well as some other styles (like Ritmos del Paraguay) adapted brilliantly by Sabicas for the flamenco guitar. A couple things about the recording: several tracks on this album also appear on "All the Best Spanish Flamenco", but I would recommend this album if you're interested in the guitar as I am. Also, some of the tracks on this CD are identical (like #1 and #11, #3 and #15), but I never mind listining for a second time. There is some skipping on track 1, but track 11 is the same piece and is flawless. I think this is the best solo flamenco guitar recording I own. It is technically amazing, yet deeply musical and soulful.

A master at work.......2000-07-10

Sabicas (1913-1990) was a grand master flamenco guitarist. This album features almost an hour of first rate traditional flamenco guitar music. Sabicas' old school style should appeal to traditionalists and fans of "neuevo flamenco" as well.

The only reason I didn't give this cd 5 stars is because of some "skating" on the first track. A friend's copy does the same thing in the same spot, so there might be a flaw in the master from which these were pressed.

As the fifth installment in Narada's popular new flamenco series, Gypsy Fire revisits a successful formula that once again will likely generate broad listener enthusiasm while also sparking sporadic grumbling from flamenco purists who believe the genre's tradition is being dishonored. Don't expect this disc's collection of 13 previously released tracks to alter the perspective of either camp. Gypsy Fire is primarily targeted at a contemporary audience, one that probably appreciates the melodic essence found in each selection at least as much as the players' nimble finger work. You'll hear no vocalizing on this collection, and a bit more emphasis on tamer, midtempo (i.e., romantic) pieces than on previous Narada packages. Highlights include the smoldering sensuality of "Gentle Seduction," the opening track from Oscar Lopez, notes by the thousands flying through "Nuevo Sol" by Strunz & Farah, and the agile melodicism of Spain's Jose Luis Encinas on "Huracan Rumba." --Terry Wood

I had an original gypsy fire cd and loved it and unfortunately lost it. My wonderful partner found one to replace it. Many of the cuts are the same on both, but some have been dropped or replaced and are not nearly as exciting as the original; somewhat disappointing, although better than not having them at all!

More heart, but less fire than embers.......2003-10-13

If you like New Flamenco (or Nouveau Flamenco, as it's also called) this is a good CD to have in your collection. But the title "Gypsy Fire" ought to really be "Gypsy Embers" as many of the pieces are more contemplative than rousing. Not a bad thing in a guitar CD, but this is definitely not hot dance music.

My favorite cuts were the last two, "Tormenta de Fuego" by Ruben Romero and Lydia Torea, and "Moonlight Dance" by James Bobchak. These aren't sampled here, but the samples provided do give a good idea of the more mellow tone of this CD. What's also nice is the selection of artists, from Oscar Lopez, to Ottmar Liebert, Miguel de la Bastide from Canada, and of course Jesse Cook, whom I think is my favorite, though really it's hard to choose. If you like New Flamenco, you will probably enjoy this CD sampler.

Fiery and fun!.......2003-05-26

This collection of consistently lively, rich and sensual numbers features a variety of "New Flamenco" artists. Included are works by Oscar Lopez, Jesse Cook, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz and Farrah, Govi and many more. I'm not sure how this wonderfully Latin music ends up in the New Age section of the CD racks rather than World Music, since it doesn't sound "New-Agey" at all, but it's great to listen to regardless of its classification. Consistently compelling, "Gypsy Fire" is my favorite of the Narada New Flamenco samplers released to date. Other compilations in the series include "Gypsy Soul", "Gypsy Passion", "Obsession" and "Flamenco Fire and Grace".

good compilation album.......2001-10-17

Wow---Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez plus Willie & Lobo on
ONE cd? That's reason enough to buy this title right
there! Actually, I don't own a copy (YET!) but I have
it currently checked out from my local library and it certainly
does not disspoint! Like with a lot of things I check out from our local city library, I'll probably end up buying this CD too.

I bought two disks as an introduction to Nouveau Flamingo. The first was by Ottmar Liebert. I found it rather uninvolving and might have stopped there, if not for Gypsy Fire. It is by far the best introduction to the genre and I highly recommend it. If you don't love at least some of the songs on Gypsy Fire, then Nouveau Flamingo is not for you. I particularly recommend Gentle Seduction by Oscar Lopez, Cascada by Jesse Cook, and the compelling A Touch of Love by the Ramon Bermudez Group. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything else by the latter group, but the other two are represented on other CDs, so you can follow their work.

If someone were to invent a category called "smooth flamenco," Armando's Fire by acoustic guitarist Oscar Lopez would qualify--and probably stand as one of the more attractive entries in the field. Lopez, born in Chile and a resident of Canada since 1979, is a skilled, often exciting player who, on his third release, displays a preference for melody and accessibility over flamboyant virtuosity. This approach yields a handsome, polished assortment of flamenco-minded instrumentals (with traces of jazz and pop elements) that generally favors romanticism over showmanship. It's not exactly a sleepy album, though after a rousing, trumpet-powered opener (the title track), the recording's prevailing mood (near medium on the heat index) is established in the second piece, the subdued, sweetly flowing "Walking Through the Pyramid." Lopez and his ensemble, in fact, only work up a lather one other time on the disc ("Dance of the Sun"). Yet Lopez (whose middle name is Armando) demonstrates exquisite fingerwork throughout, and his compositions (the charming "Gypsy Soul," the warm, breezy "Frontiers," the animated "Latino") are refined and flavorful--smooth, with an elevated sense of style. --Terry Wood

Hmm................well, not quite Oscar's best.......2004-04-26

Yes, I like Oscar Lopez. No I do not like this particular CD of his. It is way too bland, too much towards the soft-jazz genre instead of nuevo flamenco. Look at his album Flashback. There is a reason that NONE of the tracks on this cd appear on that album. Buy Flashback instead and you'll be very happy with your purchase. These other reviewers must like bland, middle-of-the-road soft jazz. There is no kick or passion to this album. Sometimes it happens when you have to produce just to produce. This isn't from his soul, there is it a decent album for background music.

Oscar lopez deserves an oscar from the music industry, I never get tired of listening to his songs , the track ""nostalgia"" is very beautiful and romantic, one of my favorites from other cds is ""loving you" it made me and my girlfriend cry .

While I was thrilled with Oscar's album called HEAT, and fell in love with his album called SEDUCTION, both difficult to surpass I thought, ARMANDO'S FIRE is a notch more outstanding. It delivers some of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard, the rythmns that make you want to move even when you're sitting down, and some the most passionate playing I've ever heard. All Oscar Lopez has to do is continue listening to his heart and we, the music listening fans, will benefit. It's amazing that he writes all of the melodies he performs. He is a brilliant writer and that much better a performer. When you watch Oscar's performance, you will ooze passion right with him, and you won't no it nor be able to do much about it. And why should you. He puts you in a listen "zone" that makes you want to shake his hand after a performance. Others may have been first in writing and playing nuevo flamenco but today, there's NO ONE better.

Oscar's guitar on fire ... Lovely !!.......2001-08-20

After listening & buying "Guitar Greats - Best Of New Flamenco", I was officially indoctrinated into Flamenco/Acoustic Guitars. This led me to a spate of CD purchases by guitar greats from that album.

Today, I purchased my very 1st album by O.Lopez. (I'm sure to sample his other (older) albums in the very near future) Just mere words cannot express the mood and sensation on listening to the music composed and performed by Lopez. Simply heavenly, fluid, a-live and totally involving, with the sounds of vibrating nylon strings plucked by the master Oscar. The compositions vary in tempo and beat in the best sense. That elusive 'feel-good' factor you feel from a handful of great recordings (sonic quality + subject matter) is ALL there. Simply delicious. Close your eyes, and get ready to be transported to the place on Earth where you are totally mesmerised by this superb guitar man. Highly recommended

I use this seasonal CD whenever I feel for an originality fix. This whole world in your hands com"YULE"ation from under the Atlantic label tree seems refreshing with each listen. Perhaps it`s the four tracks in unfamiliar tongue that allow for a dreamy flow of imagination and wonder. Perhaps it`s the exclusion of tried and true seasonal standards that for me have become like Santa`s sour milk and stale cookie treat left out at each house. Perhaps it`s the serenity of serendipious instrumentation that allows time for personal reflection upon the real reason. Perhaps it`s the "ideal model" for any label to use for a com"YULE"ation , as it favors more of a feminine anglelic vocalization to aid in seaonal balance. Perhaps it`s that one of my favorite Yultides ,that is just becoming a more of seasonal standard with each years passing, fills the ninith track here.Perhaps it`s the complier's intoxicating mix of track arrangement and the involvement of talent that truly defines feeling. Perhaps...ah no need to be rambling on. This CD is lost Yuletide Treasure and with so much orginality it`s worthy of a flyer by you. Exquisite Contemporary Christmas Music and Mood.......1999-12-21

This has become the release I cannot live without at Christmas. It is completely undiscovered and overlooked, having been released in 1995, and would be at the top of your favorites list if you heard it. The producers who assembled this incredible collection of moving music, which so thoroughly captures the spirit of the holiday season as well as any classic you can think of, deserve all too late praise for their taste and insight. Instead of relying on the familiar it makes the unfamiliar as comfortable and comforting as all of those warhorses one associates with Christmas. There are so many favorite tracks here it is unfair to break them out from the piece as a whole, even though they are all different artists performing a variety of styles and even cultures. Get this cd and be forever grateful to me--but more so to the idea of Christmas and the incredible job done by people I had (mostly)never heard of before. You will find peace and joy for a few dollars. Treat yourself.

Not bad for Narada.......2004-05-13

Narada signs up modern "flamenco" artists but I gave it a try anyway. It's not all that bad considering it's labeled "Flamenco: Fire and Grace". All tracks are modern flamenco and most are those types that are called "background music" or "elevator music". I am a traditional flamenco guitarist so excuse me for being biased but modern flamenco just doesn't move me. There's just no passion in it. And why was that particular Jesse Cook track on the cd? It's like something I would listen to to help me with my bowel movements.

Narada does it again.......2001-12-07

How is it that narada can pick over tons of albums and not come up with better compilations?This album is boring and the music is not even real flamenco.If you want authentic Spanish guitar music check out any number of awesome classical recordings by Julian Bream or John Williams and their performance of the works of Rodrigo,Sor,Albeniz,Granados,DeFalla,Sanz,Milan,Mudarra,and numerous traditional works.

Excellent 1st album in this great catagory.......2001-08-20

This remains an all time favorite. Every artist here is top flight.You can listen to this over and over and still enjoy it more and more. In fact the only other album in this genre that gives this a run for the money is the 3 CD set called Duende, which also steered me to my favorites in this genre. Every performance is top flight and essential to anyone with any interest in Flamenco. Lots of other artists are trying to horn in on the interest in this genre like Ottmar Liebert- which is like cold dishwater.Listen and decide for youself

THERE REALLY IS SOME FLAMENCO HERE!.......2000-10-03

Considering the great quantity of truly non-flamenco music out there masquerading as "Flamenco" (e.g., "Gypsy Passion," "Gypsy Soul," anything by Otmar Liebert - and calling it "new" flamenco doesn't entitle it to be called flamenco), it's more than a little harsh to label this album "not really flamenco." Granted, this isn't Agujetas, Antonio Mairena, Manolo Caracol, etc., etc. - the extremely earthy, unvarnished flamenco of old for which one needs to develop a definite taste. But there's some very good stuff here nonetheless.

A minor criticism: I wonder why there's two cuts by Bastide when there could have been two cuts instead by Paco de Lucia, whose style Bastide tries to imitate.

And one VERY LARGE criticism: What's Jesse Cook doing on this album? He has nothing to do with Flamenco. That's like going to an aquarium exhibit entitled "Great Fish of the World" and finding a guppy swimming nervously in a tank of sharks and barracudas - but which is provided an identification tag the same size as all the other fish. That only serves to inflate the role of the guppy beyond all proportion.

Not Really Flamenco.......1999-06-14

If you are new to the sound of Flamenco, this is a gentle introduction, fused with the modern sounds of jazz and predictable 4 beat rhythms. It would be more appropriate to call it a jazz fusion with a dusting of flamenco. Calling this album FLAMENCO does a great disservice to what is really flamenco-driving, complicated compás, complicated remates, wrenching lyrics and just guitar, cajón, (maybe flute) palmas, cante and footwork. If you're looking for real Flamenco-IT'S NOT HERE!

High Octane, Passionate Cello.......2007-04-20

I love this CD. I found it when doing a search for another CD with Gnomentanz. The Janos Starker CD with all the Popper is great, too. Starker was one of Maria Kliegel's teachers so maybe that is one reason why she plays so flawlessly. I think these songs sound beautiful because she also plays them so expressively. The Manuel De Falla is firey and the Rachmaninoff is sultry. She uses her bow to create a rasgueado effect, along with pizzicato on the piece called "Flamenco". I had not heard this kind of bowing before. It's really effective at evoking a guitar-like quality, but then the beautiful lyrical sustain of the bow in the legato parts just takes all that to a supreme level. Beyond just the musical beauty of this CD the technique makes it 5 stars.
