5 out of 5 stars Sound as if I am in church........2007-06-07

Though my title says chicano_punk, I have an apreciation for music also. I have a church choir, and I wish they would just sound like the voices ensembled in this album. I usually listen to this cd when I am doing my college work or I need to meditate, it is very relaxing. The vocals in this album are wonderful, and I have to say that it sounds good. I usually dislike songs that are ensembled with instruments, and choir voices, but this cd surely proved me wrong. As my comment said, it sets the ambience as if I am in church though, when I am listening to this cd. You should here the previews on this cd, and hear the voices that I am talking about. This is a great celtic album, and if you want something that is mind relieving, then you should listen to this cd.

. . . for the "non-listener" who just rated this CD three stars and admitted they hadn't even listened to it! First, why bother reviewing it if you haven't heard it! And drag down the overall score as well! This CD is beautiful by the way and deserves a full five stars. I am purchasing it again as a gift.

This CD was a Christmas gift and as yet I have not heard whether it was good or not.

5 out of 5 stars Best Celtic CD Ever.......2007-01-18

This is my absolute fav. celtic CD. I have had to buy it three times cause everyone loves it so much it keeps "turning up missing"

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful; peaceful; classic Celtic.......2006-11-28

This was one of the cd's I put with the cd player we gave my mother when she started getting suddenly really sick with cancer, and she played it a lot. I hope, and think it must have had to take her mind off for a while at least. My other 4 sisters and I do some traditional songs, and we sang "Rosa Mystica" (which we first heard on this CD), voices-only, at her funeral Mass -- she had a very close relationship with Mary and the Rosary and there couldn't have been a more fitting song. This is a great traditional Celtic album; haunting but so beautiful. Doesn't sound at all like your typical church music but is very spiritual and would actually work well for meditation of any kind, as well as just being a very beautiful album.

5 out of 5 stars Great music to de-stress.......2007-05-09

My husband and I listen to this cd almost every night before going to sleep. The music is calming and reverent. Great way to end a busy day.

5 out of 5 stars Transportive and restorative.......2007-01-25

This is one of the most beautiful, restorative collections of Celtic music I have ever heard. Haunting, sublime harp, cello, guitar, flute, and soundscapes create an atomosphere of serenity for meditation, prayer, or simply unwinding the mind and emotions. The poetry which originated each selection is included and provides a meditation in itself. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2007-01-05

The music included on the "Celtic Meditation Music" CD is so soothing & hauntingly beautiful to me that I've barely listened to anything else for the last week - it's that good!

The liner notes are great as well. They share information about the various rituals, prayers, and poems that are behind each of the songs - it's really quite interesting!

Overall, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the sounds of celtic music, as well as those who are looking for music to relax to - it's absolutely beautiful!

4 out of 5 stars Gentle, contemplative Celtic instrumentals.......2006-10-01

Based on ancient Celtic prayers, the compositions featured on this album were conceived under the premise "If prayers were music, what would they sound like?" The gentle, familiar tunes, rendered on Minogue's sparkling Irish harp and accompanied by other acoustic and electronic instruments, are drawn from the traditional Celtic repertoire and the liner notes pair each song with the text of a prayer, either pagan/nature-based or Christian. This pairing of unrelated prayers with existing melodies is an interesting approach, especially considering that the tracks here are all instrumental, with none of the prayer words actually being spoken or sung. Minogue's earlier albums feature a lot of vocals, both hers and others', sometimes even done hymn-style in rich choral harmonies. So I'm not sure why the texts of the prayers couldn't have been incorporated somehow into this music. But nonetheless, "Celtic Meditation Music" is, like all of Aine Minogue's work that I'm familiar with, deftly orchestrated, supremely relaxing, and full of quiet beauty. This is good music for massage, resting, deep breathing, or just unwinding at the end of a long day. Then guest instrumentalists are cellist Eugene Friesen, whistle player Joanie Madden, clarinetist Tom Hill, string orchestrator Brad Hatfield, concertina player Brid Meany, guitarist Sheldon Mirowitz and electronic soundscape artist Randy Roos. For more Celtic-inspired instrumentals conducive to meditation, try Minogue's other works, and also the following: "Celtic Inspirations" by guitarist William Patterson, the Narada compilation albums "Celtic Treasure: The Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan" and "Celtic Treasure II: The Living Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan," and anything by Kim Robertson and Lisa Lynne, but particularly their early work.

Laura Powers has done it again.I loved her first album so much, that I bought her second one unheard. No mistake-it's as great as the first one!If you love music with a celtic twist, you will love this....

5 out of 5 stars Goddess Bless Laura Powers!!.......2003-11-09

Laura Powers does it again, with her 2nd CD that proves to be as heart warming and mystical as the prior! Laura's voice allows you to connect with that part of your soul that opens up to the flowing and meaningful music that she creates. Dynamic and Soothing all in one! I can't say enough about Laura and her music, it will take you to a new level!!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth........2003-10-08

A nice blend of moods and quite mellow as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and moving.......2002-10-13

I may have a new favorite artist. The harmonies and light instrumentation blend to give the listener an aural caress that lasts for the whole album. I prefer music where the singer blends into the music and becomes one of the instruments instead of insisting on being the focus of the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Pale continues the magic.......2002-01-03

Laura Powers does it again. Legends of the Goddess II Beyond the Pale, has all the magic and beauty but is unique. Beyond the Pale has everything you could wish for. Her songwriting is poetry and if you liked the Mists of Avalon or Braveheart you will love this cd. I especially loved the Songs A Heart in Winter and Long Way Down. I cannot say enough to express how much I love her music, you simply must see for yourselves.

3 out of 5 stars Caroline Lavelle's Spirit.......2006-04-06

I first heard Caroline Lavelle in the wee small hours of the morning back in the early 90s when she was featured and interviewed on NPR's World Cafe. She performed "Dream of Picasso" and a few other songs from the Spirit album. It was love at first listen. I bought Spirit soon after, and it's still a favourite album of mine a decade later.

Lavelle's music is often classified as either Celtic or New Age, or both. It definitely has elements from those genres, but her music holds a depth and intense, almost trip-hop beat that is absent from other Celtic/New Age acts. This is most likely due to the influence of William Orbit, who worked on many of the songs on the album. Caroline also has a powerfully deep, rich voice that reminds me a little of PJ Harvey.

Spirit features traditional Celtic songs like "Moorlough Shore", as well as a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" reworked for what is simultaneously a more modern yet ancient sound. The album also has several original songs written by Lavelle and William Orbit, like the trancey "Dream of Picasso".

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut album.......2004-11-07

Maybe the critic ear could spot some places where there is more Orbit than Lavelle, but this is a wonderful debut album all the same, and it sports the winning recipe of Caroline's following records: original composings, traditional songs and poems set to music. The album also features the Peter Gabriel-sounding song 'Dream of Picasso', and if you can get a chance to hear it live I can assure you won't regret it.
Definitely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Early William Orbit Effort.......2003-09-05

I don't have much more to add to the positive reviews below--this is a wonderful, chill out, hypnotising record. However it bears noting that nearly all of the album was produced, and in spots written by William Orbit before he became so well known for Madonna's Ray of Light. His swirling synth landscapes are all present here as well, and add many layers to Caroline's vocals.

Stunning

5 out of 5 stars I adore this album..........2002-05-21

I'll admit I knew nothing about Caroline Lavelle until a friend gave me her album. He said he thought I might like her because of my musical choices in the past -- wow, was he right.

First off, her singing is nothing like Loreena McKennitt. That's not bad, but makes her different. She has a sultry rich husky voice compared to Loreena's sweet melodic singing. Caroline's singing is in-your-face with deep notes and every breath she takes can be heard.

As for her music she is an incredibly talented musician. All of her songs vary in types from native influenced, to celtic inspired to down right sultry. Check out "DESIRE" -- a song I plan to use at my wedding. WOW what a gorgeous torch song! "A Case of You" based on Mitchell's original release is as good as the original, if not better. She takes the song out of the rafters and drops it down an octave in order to let you sing along, in my opinion.

I never tire of this album. She is very unique and very likeable as well as friendly. I had friends who met her at her concert and said she was very nice to them. Also, I wrote to her website to ask for lyrics and she personally sent them to me. A musician who cares about her fans! Plus a talented one! I hope she continues to keep giving out good music. I'd be more than happ to buy it from her.

5 out of 5 stars Serene and intimate........2002-01-15

I remember browsing my local music store one day and this album caught my eye. I liked the autumn milieu and the colors on the cover artwork. I also recognized the name Caroline Lavelle from somewhere. Weeks later, when flipping through my Loreena McKennitt collection, I saw Caroline Lavelle in the booklet for Live in Paris & Toronto. She played cello in McKennitt's live band. Thinking anyone who played with McKennitt had to be good, I picked up this album. That's a true story. Really.

Well, it's like nothing Loreena McKennitt ever did. There is a bit of a Celtic quality to some of the melodies, but I'm actually reminded a bit more of Enya. However, Lavelle's music is "darker," and more somber (as opposed to the "bright" ambience of Enya). The arrangements on this CD is very quiet and subtle. Producer William Orbit creates layers of smooth electronic-tinged music, almost in a "new age" sort of way. Some tracks have too much bass, but he does a good job most of the time, allowing Lavelle's voice to be the main instrument, supplemented by electronics but not immersed by them. I love her voice...very sensual and sexy, deep and pristine. "A Case of You" is hot stuff, leaving me in need of a cold shower. Lavelle also plays some beautiful cello pieces, like the murmuring solo at the beginning of "Moorlough Shore." There is also a lot more "real" instrumentation, like pianos, pipes, and guitars.

Songs are all pretty slow and mellow, but different songs still entail different moods, from gentle ("Turning Ground") to feisty ("Dream of Picasso"). If this CD were edible, I'd put it in a sandwich and eat it.

Album Description

Celtic Twilight 7: Sacred Spirit weaves a Celtic knot of sacred music from antiquity to the present. The central feature of the Celtic worldview is the intimate relationship of humans with the natural world--"a holy intimacy between the human and the divine in nature"--and "a sense of spirit presences in nature" as Thomas Berry says. This feeling is expressed in many of the pieces on this album. A very similar worldview infuses the music of the brilliant 12th century German visionary Hildegard von Bingen. Like the Celts, Hildegard believed that the natural world is a Divine creation, filled with Divine beauty and Divine energy, and this is the theme of her songs. Some of the best Celtic artists have recognized their kinship with her and have made her music their own. This album features several songs by Hildegard in unique arrangements that are so radiantly Celtic in spirit, they almost transport the listener to the holy wells of Ireland. Also featured are top-notch Irish choir Anúna, great Celtic artists Áine Minogue and Cathie Ryan, brilliant English cellist Matthew Barley, virtuoso fiddler Mark O'Connor and his Appalachia Waltz Trio, the perfectly-tuned English choir The Cambridge Singers, and the wonderful Medieval/Eastern fusion ensemble Stellamara.

5 out of 5 stars "THIS IS A WINNER"...Heavenly and Mystical...........2007-03-15

ALL MUSIC GUIDE reviewer Thom Jurek, tells why you will love this CD. He says:
"These original songs and interpretations are rendered in forms of sonic poetry that appeal to that which is sacred inside the individual as opposed to underscoring a particular tradition....This is a winner. Forget tags like "new age" and "Celtic," and simply breathe it all in. It washes one's head -- and perhaps even heart -- clean for a time, and opens the world up for a little while".

I am the producer of both this compilation and the "SACRED TREASURES" series. In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. All of the pieces on this compilation are filled with lush harmonies, whether sung by mixed choirs or by soloists, and all are deeply nourishing to the soul.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of my compilations, including this one, "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit".

5 out of 5 stars Best Irish Recording I Have Heard So Far.......2006-11-19

I have a collection of Irish music CDs from the Irish Rovers, the Clancy Brothers - with and without Tommy Makem, The Chieftains, Bing Crosby, the Jolly Beggerman, and various Irish artists. I love them all, but when I listened to this CD I immediately became a big Dubliners fan, though I admit to knowing very little about them. On some tracks, the lead singer is a tenor, while on others a bass. I can hear their Irish accents which is a big plus. There are 20 tracks on the CD and quite varied from the marching Rocky Road to Dublin and The Gentleman Soldier (track 11 on my disk) to the gentleness of Fields of Athenry and Carrickfergus. They even do Seven Drunken Nights but only sing the first five verses as the other two would not be appropriate for mixed company. They also have two instrumentals, the first being a beautiful number played on a fiddle called The Marino Waltz which I would love to hear performed on flute by James Galway, and the more-rousing The Mason's Apron. It was a mixture of songs I knew such as Finnegan's Wake, The Irish Rover and The Wild Rover, and new songs such as the haunting Dirty Old Town and The Town I Loved So Well. Two are done a capella - The Auld Triangle which is also titled The Royal Canal on other CDs, and Monto. Since playing it, I have not played very many of my other Irish CDs. Whenever I feel like listening to Irish music, which is most of the time, I almost always put on The Dubliners Ultimate Collection. I highly recommend it to all who either love Irish music, or want to experience it.

5 out of 5 stars Dervish "rocks"!.......2007-06-18

Awesome CD! What talent. The first three songs are SO excellent, and flow together really nicely (gives me chills at some points). Seamus does a great job with Ewan MacColl's "The Lag's Song." "Soldier Laddie" is another highlight, and Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather;" etc. This is a fun band to see live as well.

5 out of 5 stars Dervish does it again.......2005-04-21

Top-flight 7-piece Dervish from Sligo in Ireland have been ultra-consistent in their recorded offerings and this new album, four years in the making, is no different. Rousing dance tunes like The Banks of Lough Gowna, lovely songs like The Fair Haired Boy by Brendan Graham and evocative airs like O'Raghalligh's Grave are arranged, played and sung with the greatest finesse and warmth of feeling. Cathy Jordan's distinctive and expressive voice is backed by fiddle, mandola, flutes, guitars, accordion, harmonica, bouzouki and other instruments. Songs are in both English and Gaelic and include The Lag's Song by Ewan McColl, Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan, The Soldier Laddie, and a "Tune of the Munster Pipers" from the 1860s. Instrumental medleys drive forward with a sweeping momentum that is totally exhilarating. Dervish are a cut above the ordinary and always work hard to present Irish traditional music with a touch of pizazz, while holding fast to the age-old true Irish spirit. Yep, this is the real deal and it's great to hear this band going from strength to strength. http://www.dervish.ie.

4 out of 5 stars I still love Dervish, but this is not their best CD.......2004-10-04

I would hate to think people interested in Dervish due to their reputation for traditional Irish Music would start with this album. To avoid mistakes, I am saying there are great tracks on this album, and all of the musicians are top shelf Irish musicians. I absolutely love this band. However, I would consider their best albums to be "Decade" for people that think in that American way (direct, straight to the point, music only). If you think in that lovely Irish way, Irish music is a part of pub culture to be enjoyed with friends, families, relatives, pets and few strangers soon to be friends. In that case "Live in Palma" two CD set has all of the proper introductions, not to mention an invitation to sing Irish Gaelic Karoake. Don't forget the stout when listening. They followed these CDs with "Midsummer's Night." The CDs previously mentioned can be played straight through without exception to excellencet tradional music. They also have a VHS tape availabe at their website of a live performance at a neighborhood, Sligo-Ireland pub. I need to emphasize these are the best of the best to be offered in the category of traditional Irish Music in the traditional Irish way (other musicians and bands need to mentioned here also in the best of best category). There are no electrical instruments, but the band's team of guitar, mandolin, bazouki intricate chord arrangements with Cathy Jordan's golden voice are the trademarks for this group. The band's manager passed, hence the title of this album. I sense a loss. It is also a loss of direction, similar to Solas after their lead singer left. The This is still a worthy contribution to any collection that includes Dervish.

5 out of 5 stars It's finally here!.......2004-02-26

I first heard Dervish at the Cambridge Folk Festival and had to buy this CD, which was out in the UK nearly 2 years before being released here in the US. From then, I have worked backwards through the Dervish catalogue. For fans of Dervish's previous albums, I can tell you that it only gets better.

Cathy Jordan's voice shines throughout, but especially on "Fair-Haired Boy" and Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather". On the instrumental side, the highlights include "Jig Songs" (a medley of three pieces) and "Swallows Tail". There is also an excellent rendition of "Soldier Laddie". This Irish folk standard has a rather repetitive song structure, but Dervish incorporate wonderful variations in both the vocals and the instrumentation that keep the song lively all the way through.

For those readers who are unfamiliar with Dervish, I can only urge you to buy this CD...as well as their previous work. The group has firmly established itself as the current standard bearer of traditional Irish music. I should note that this genre is a bit different from popular conceptions (i.e. new-agey Celtic music, such as Enya) - Dervish does not rely on synthesizers or the like but on your good old fiddle, acoustic guitar, flute, etc. (Anyone who wants some of those synthesized effects should try the Scottish group Capercaillie.) I know there are some people who just don't like this sort of music, but the rest of you who are more open-minded about quality music should appreciate Dervish's Spirit, for the musicianship is second to none.

5 out of 5 stars Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability.......2004-06-29

I was familiar with Robin's work with the eclectic acoustic trio, Helicon, and I even had the great honor of his musical accompaniment at a local art fair gig once. Knowing about his mastery of many instruments, I've been wanting to get this album of his for quite some time. Robin plays nine different instruments on "Midnight Howl." Steve Bloom's percussion is right on, and we also hear some expert bodhran, wooden flute and Celtic harp from Myron Bretholz, Chris Norman and Sue Richards, respectively. No slouches there! The CD starts with a lively "John MacKenzie's Fancy" that imparts a rhythmic intensity that is very powerful. Throughout the journey, he follows his quick paced romps with leisurely musical strolls. Arrangements are well thought out, and it's a true pleasure to hear the genesis of 8-minute numbers like "Jaybird Suite" and "Ash Grove Suite." Robin Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-04-28

I have become a huge Robin Bullock fan, and this CD "Midnight Howl" is just the latest of his works that I have aquired. These tunes are a beautiful blending of a little Celtic, a little "Hillbilly", a little Bluegrass, and a lot of pride. This is such a beautiful work, I would have to place it close to one of my favorites. I believe, if you like string music with a down home flavor, you should give this work a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-02-02

I discovered Robin Bullock when he toured a couple years ago with Celtic accordian madman John Whelan. Bullock is an outstanding musician. I had to have the CD that included a song called "For Ireland I'd Not Tell Her Name." That turned out to be "Midnight Howl." A beautiful song, as is every piece on this CD. If you enjoy Celtic and traditional instrumental music suitable for relaxing and dreaming on a snowy or rainy day, don't miss this recording!
