5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Russian 101.......2007-02-09

Growing up post-WWII, and in college and the military during the Cold War, I wanted to understand my "enemy", a the military demands. This album was part of my learning, and is just good music. Many pop and rockers will not be interested: their loss. Bikel took folk singing a step further, and even not understanding all the words (I took Russian in college), it has a good intro to the Russian "soul", from Ivan the Terrible to Putin.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Double Album From Theodore Bikel.......2006-04-15

I have owned the LP of "Songs of a Russian Gypsy" since the early 60's, and it has always been a favorite. This record was a "breakthrough hit" for Elektra records in the early days (See "Follow The Music" by Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws).
"Songs of a Russian Gypsy" was re-issued as a CD by Bainbridge Records, in the 90's, but in limited numbers. When the supply dried up, only an uncertain "used" market remained, with prices quite variable. (see my review of the used CD).
This re-issue also includes another Bikel favorite, "Songs of Russia Old and New". Hopefully, more early Electra Albums will surface through the efforts of Collectors Choice Music!

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Great Hungarian Music.......2007-05-20

I think there is some room for confusion the way this album is marketed. I have a hunch some people are buying this album thinking it is Sandor Lakatos. There is a difference between Sandor Lakatos and Sandor Deki Lakatos. They are two different people. In fact, Deki Lakatos is Sandor's son. There is also Sandor Deki Lakatos Jr. The Lakatos dynasty (which is exactly what it is) carries on a long tradition of playing excellent Hungarian music. For me though, no one comes close to the father, except maybe Boross Lajos.

"Music from Hungary" is a good CD to buy for those familiar and not familiar with Hungarian music. As I said the Lakatos family is well known in Hungary for their amazing skill, so musicians and Hungarian music lovers will instantly take note of Lakatos' great skill while the unfamiliar listener will sit back and enjoy something they have probably never heard before.

I admit I'm a little bias when it comes to this kind of music as I am Hungarian and a musician (as well as the son of a son of a musician) who plays this kind of music. It is something I have heard everyday of my life. It is music which gives me the most joy to listen to. So if I gush at this music, keep in mind, I simply can't help myself. At the same time I want to remain objective and keep in mind how other people might react. Those who do not like or know very little about this kind of music.

Most of the songs on the CD actually are not really Hungarian. Over half of the songs are Romanian. Kind of makes you wonder whats on the "Music from Romania" CD! Half of the songs were written by the great Romanian composer Grigoras Dinicu. There is "The Lark", "March Hora", "The Mail" and a "Hora Dance"

My favorite tracks on the album are "The Lark" (great cimbalom solo. Sadly, as usual, no mention of who it is. It would be nice to know whose playing I'm copying) for something a little different, more slower "Valse Triste" is just beautiful. A duet between cimbalom and violin. I also like the medley of Hungarian dances (No. 1, 5 and 6). The old standby's are here and played quite well, "Monti's Csardas" and "Whistle Hora".

For the price of the CD honestly it is well worth it. I'm glad I bought the CD. I wish amazon had more Hungarian CDs at such resonable prices. For that matter, I wish amazon had more Hungarian CDs at ANY price from artists as talented as Lakatos.

Bottom-line: Great sample of what the Lakatos dynasty is all about. Good, fast arrangements of old standard Hungarian and Romanian songs that lovers of this type of music should enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Music from Hungary.......2007-02-16

It should be listed under classical music! Maestro Lakatos is a true Virtuoso!

5 out of 5 stars Music from Hungary.......2006-03-10

I just loved the Hungarian music on this CD. The delivery and the condition were excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A giant musician!.......2005-08-26

Lakatos bas become a reference by himself at the moment to measure the grade of performance of any particular ensemble evolved with this musical field.
Lakatos impregnates the whole Band of inspired mood and vigorous pronouncement. His results can not be better expressed: an immediate rapport will be established between you and Lakatos since you listen the first bars of any of his themes.
The Magyar spirit, the Csárdás or the ancient gypsy songs find in Sandor a robust expressiveness and assertiveness interpretative.
Go for this extraordinary compilation that resumes, takes back and preserves the vitality and charm of this fabulous and untamed millenary musical genre.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but..........2005-05-06

...almost one third of the tracks on this disc are not Hungarian, but Romanian music played by Hungarians, though it doesn't explicitly say so (I'm speaking of tracks 2, 8, 10, 11 and 15).
Firstly, the Lark ("Ciocârlia") is a famous traditional song composed by Romanian Gypsy musician Anghelus Dinicu in 1889, based on a Romanian folk tune. The song was later made popular by his grandson, virtuoso violinist Grigoras Dinicu and by violinist/composer George Enescu.
As for the "horas": The 'hora' is a Romanian folk dance music found in all parts of the country. And, actually, the track "March Hora" contains themes from the piece "Hora staccato" by Grigoras Dinicu.
The horas on this CD are definitely Romanian dances, especially in their lively parts, with some slow parts thrown in, consisting of a waltzy-restaurant-style music.

I am very pleased with this CD. It includes musical selections I have heard while visiting friends in the past and is very soothing and comforting to listen to during a long day of work.

5 out of 5 stars Balalaika-Russia's Most Beautiful~Stars of St. Petersburg.......2001-03-15

A fabulous, and rousing musical CD by the Stars of St. Petersburg. They use the traditional instruments to play all the songs with the histories of the instruments in the CD jacket. An excellent CD to get to know the balalika and the wonderful music that it can bring to one's ears. The songs flow into each other to further the enjoyment of this CD. Highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the Balalika or Russian music.

Anyone who attended one of the New York "Gypsy Caravan" tour concerts will probably recall Fanfare Ciocarlia's unwillingness to let the evening end. After the final encore, the multi-generational Romanian brass ensemble marched and shimmied around the hall, playing hell-bent-for-leather, to the delight of exiting patrons and the dismay of exhausted venue staffers. Some of their fabled brand of antic lunacy was captured during Jasmine Dellal's recently released Gypsy Caravan documentary but the 14 tunes on this album make an even better souvenir. Famed for their intricately interwoven thematic lines and insanely fast tempos, as well as for spot-on accuracy amid what sometimes sounds like total mayhem, the ensemble meant this album to be a memorial for their late bandleader, Ioan Ivancea. With this in mind, they invited the cream of European Roma (the correct term for "Gypsy") musicians to participate, creating a breathtakingly star-studded roster. Esma Redzepova, known far and wide as Macedonia's "Queen Of The Gypsies," is here in all her clarion-voiced emoting extravagance, along with Bucharest-based pop star Dan Armeanca, Kal from Belgium, Mitsou from Hungary, Bulgaria's Jony Iliev, plus many more. All are wonderful, each in his or her own way. The final track is Fanfare's bound-to-become-immortal cover of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild," originally recorded for the Borat soundtrack. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2005-08-25

I like this CD. It's passionate and an interesting historical find. Recommended for Russian enthusists, history buffs, or true Marxist/Socialists. On a side note(directed at the previous reviewer), please have the courtesy to review the CD only if you have it or have heard it. Please do not attempt to turn this into a political forum.

1 out of 5 stars Oh this brings back the memories ....................!.......2005-07-27

There are only two reasons that I can think of why one should buy this CD. You want to give this CD away as a gig to your hungarian friend who happens to suffer from insomnia, or you are a relentless communist and still believe in Santa Claus.

5 out of 5 stars Das Communism.......2002-10-19

Although I am not a fan of communism, this is a great compilation of all of Communism's greatest hits. Yes, this is great music to start all of your meetings will. Your comrades and you will speak of all of the pains and woes of the common working man until the next rising. A must buy comrade.

4 out of 5 stars Clarification and opinion..........2001-04-09

Contrary to what another reviewer wrote about the fourth song "Onward Red Guards, Proletarians", this is not an adaptation of a nazi tune. It was written by Leonid Petrovitsch Radin in a Moscow cell in 1897 and it played an important role in the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 in Russia. The version on this CD is good. It is also knowned in German under the name Brüder Zur Sonne Zur Freiheit and in English under the name Boldly comrades in steps... There is also a French version (Hardi camarades !) but it is the Russian original version that is the best (Smelo Tovarishchi, V'Nogu) which was often sung during Bolshevik proclamations...

This album is interesting for the genuine revolutionary songs that are for once well orchestrated. However the lasts tunes are a lot less interesting since they date from the stalinist period and have never been sung by any revolutionnary... Otherwise, it would have been a 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars TZIGANI!.......2000-07-31

This is truly intoxicating and heady music. If you imagine a brass band (usually synonomous with 'military' music), shaken hard, a rhythm section as tight as can be, playing what can only be equated to a gypsy version of speed metal - you still don't come anywhere close to describing how breathtaking this group plays. I saw them live 3 months ago in london, and the nearest description i can give is like being in a east european rhythmic earthquake. This band plays on the edge of the believable and is probably what the devil listens to when throwing a party. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

5 out of 5 stars exuberant and mesmerizing musica tiganeasca.......2000-05-03

Uplifting, tight and captivating rom music, played with anincredible speed in an upbeat tempo. The rythm, propelled by drivingpercussions, tight tuba and woven together with blazing, butoccasionally dreamy, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone solos, compells dance movement. This exuberant melange of various Balkan and Turkish styles has also elements of klezmer in it. A great follow-up to Fanfare Ciocarlia's first CD "Radio Pascani". Buy it and play it loud and often!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Party Album!.......2000-05-03

It is almost impossible to believe that people can play as fast and as tight as Fanfare Ciocarlia. These twelve guys can play like no one else I've ever heard. The music is not only fast, but beautiful and uplifting. This is definitly one of the best albums of 2000!

5 out of 5 stars Baro Biao:World Wide Wedding.......2000-03-21

I now have both CD's by Fanfare Ciocarlia...and I find that if you want "bouncy" upbeat brass band music in an Eastern European manner, thisx is the type of music to have. The music is addicting and once started, your feet will not stay still! There is a problem...trying to find these CD's!

5 out of 5 stars An Exotic Blast of Energy.......2007-04-14

This is one of my favorite albums that I own. Mostly electronic music, this album is perfect for exercising or just getting psyched up for... I don't know... anything! The only song that slows down the flow of the album is track #2 (30 Minut). It's still a good song, but should have been put either first or last (before the remixes) in my opinion. This album isn't overly impressive in terms of talent, however it is different and interesting. The fact that the entire album is sung in Russian adds an exotic element. In track #4 (Zachem Ya), you can feel this exotic nature not only in the vocals, but also in the musical style. Yulia even contributes some Russian rap in that song! Trust me though, you don't need to understand Russian to appreciate this music.

If you already own "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane," then many of these songs will already be familiar to you. The only difference is that the songs are in Russian and they have more of an electronic feel to them in "Dvesti Po Vstrechnoi." For example, "All the Things She Said" from 200 km/h is the English-language counterpart of "Ya Soshla S Uma" from Dvesti, although this does not mean every lyric translates line for line. This is evident in the title of the song; "Ya Soshla S Uma" essentially means "I've Lost my Mind" in Russian. You should also notice that the English version has more of a rock band emphasis than the Russian version.

The bottom line is that this is a great album. You can say what you want about the controversial nature of t.A.T.u., but this album alone proves that there is a lot more to t.A.T.u. than some people give them credit for.

5 out of 5 stars Version 2 better than 1.......2006-04-22

This version of Dvesti Po Vstrechnoi has more songs than the original and it has diffrent remixes. It is one of tatu's best sellers. it even outsold the original! The russian vocals feel real in this album and they are really sweet and sour. I recomend this cd highly.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the US version!.......2005-11-11

I was really impressed with the original US version, but after hearning the Russian version I loved TATU a million times more. There are 2 extra songs...# 3 (Count to 100) & 9 (You're My Enemey Now). The only weak song was the remix on song #12. BUt overall this is an awesome cd and I would highly recommend getting this, even if you already have the american version. It is a must for a TATU fan.

4 out of 5 stars Proof Positive That The Original Is Always Better........2005-07-29

Like most people, I bought 200 KM/H in the Wrong Lane soon after I heard the addictive hit "All The Things She Said". This was two or three years ago. I've just recently gotten around to picking up Dvesti Po Vstrechnoi, and I can say that it is leaps and bounds better than the English release.

First of all, you can tell that Lena and Yulia understand what they're saying a lot better, seeing as how Russian is of course their first language. There's much more emotion in their voices that is absent from the mainstream English tracks.

Secondly, several tracks appear here that weren't on the English release, one memorable song in particular being "Robot". These extra tracks are well worth the price of admission.

Of course, the album has downsides. The major one is: it's in Russian. So if you don't speak or understand Russian, you may not enjoy this one too much. I personally don't mind it one bit, but I know some who would.

Secondly, the two remix tracks at the end are very dull and far too long. They'd have been better left off of the album entirely.

Overall, I recommend this to anyone who bought 200 KM/H, or anyone who likes intense dance/techno/unique music.
