Customer Reviews:
Stay Away.......2006-01-05
While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!
Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23
The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.
Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11
I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

OK.......2005-03-17
Good CD, especially if you're a fan of Mark O'Conner. I have to admit that a couple of the tracks seem rather directionless (in a Vaughn Williams sort of way) and I tend to lose interest, but other tracks are fun, even exciting. The production is excellent throughout.
Great Music.......2004-02-27
I watched the documentary and heard Mark O'Connor play this piece in a concert and loved it immediately. The music is great to help the battles come alive but great for just listening to anyway.
GREAT SOUNDTRACK!.......2003-07-04
Fine CD full of great pieces of music from a great miniseries! Full of patriotism! I highly recommend it! Grade: A+
Finest Music Ever Heard.......2002-03-27
I heard this music on the excellent P B S Documentary: "Liberty - the American Revolution" and I knew I had to have it! It is the finest music I have heard, capturing the heart and soul of the American Revolution. The documentary "Liberty" was a masterpiece that was beautiful and moving. So too this music with its most wonderful arrangements and accompaniment. I love it! I could hardly wait to get it in the mail. It framed the documentary (which I also bought) like a great frame compliments a beautiful canvas painting. Superlatives fail me. This music must be experienced by first watching the great series on the American Revolution and then by listening to it apart. This is some of the most wonderful music I have ever heard. It reminds me of the genius of Aaron Copland who wrote the Applachian Spring and Rodeo suites.
Stirring Americana.......2001-11-10
This CD stands on its own merits as good music, not simply as music for a TV show. It evokes images of America old and new. O'Connor's violin carries us from the dance hall to the battlefield to the sorrow of lover's lost. Simple melodies twist and turn, rising up from their solid American roots. James Taylor's solemn rendition of "Johnny's Gone for a Soldier"is as true a telling of the grief of the soldier lost to war today as it was hundreds of years ago. Sit in a comfortable chair in the warm light of evening and let it surround you. To know where we have come from offers hope that the magic of freedom and liberty will not desert us in these troubled times.

Album Description
Traditional Celtic music has almost continually enlivened the world of formal classical music. While Celtic-speaking peoples lived through much of central Europe during the first millennium BCE -- including modern France, Austria, Switzerland and beyond -- during the following 2000 years leading up to our own time, their range has gradually narrowed to just the British Isles and western France. While 'Celtic' in America and Britain increasingly refers simply to 'Irish' music, in Europe 'Celtic' may refer broadly to the music of any of the far-flung branches of the ancient linguistic tree.
Our program explores actual Scottish, Welsh and Irish music as well as arrangements conceived by Haydn and Beethoven to flatter the 'exotic' taste of art-music audiences. In addition, we present Haydn's canzonettas, which are essentially newly created works inspired by English folksong style. At this time, when music was beginning to overflow the banks of Classicism to become Romanticism, the term 'Celtic'had not truly emerged as a political and artistic term. Only in the late 19th century did the 'Celtic Twilight' movement associated with William Butler Yeats consciously attempt to revive ancient relationships between the various far-flung Celtic peoples.
Customer Reviews:
Julianne Baird is the reason to buy this CD.......2007-04-06
If you love Celtic music as I do, this is a must have for your CD colletion. Julianne Baird has more than a beautiful voice; she is a first rate musician and interpreter of these traditional Scottish and Welsh songs.
Check out the third item on the sampler. I think you will love the traditional scottish songs arranged by Haydn.
The CD also includes original English songs by Haydn as well as Haydn and Beethoven arrangements of traditional celtic folk songs and instrumental variations. Lux Musica is the ensemble of flute, violin, violoncello, and keyboard. Their music is well done, but Julianne Baird is the reason to buy this CD.
This is just pure enjoyment.

Customer Reviews:
One of My Favorite CDs.......2005-06-18
Many years ago, I owned "A Glint at the Kindling" on LP, and was fortunate enough to buy one of what turned out to be a limited edition of 3,500 CDs on a business trip to London about a decade ago. "Kindling," a concept album dealing with Williamson's boyhood, was one of my favorite LPs of the 1970s, and at first, I thought of the "Selected Writings" as an annoyance tacked on to the end. Then I listened to it. In my opinion, an artist owes the world exactly nothing, but Robin, if you're reading this, please bring out another edition. "Edinburgh" alone is worth the price of admission -- a 19-minute rant that is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. I have a lot of CDs, but if I had to chose a dozen "desert island disks" this would definitely be one of them.
The true bardic tradition.......2002-11-28
Robin Williamson isn't a folksinger - he's a bard. And the modern bardic tradition gets no better than this album. Five Denials on Merlin's Grave is a wake for a Britain that never really was, but should have been. My favorite track is Me and the Mad Girl, one of the saddest and most touching songs I have ever heard. The line "You took me for an enemy, and I took you for a friend" describes the loneliness of being different in such a pure way...
Apparently this album is out of print again. If you find a copy, grab it!
Glint at the Kindling - a timeless masterpiece.......1998-08-21
When I first encountered "Glint at the kindling" I was only familiar with Robin's work in the Incredible String Band. This was different stuff - but it soon captured me as much as the best the ISB produced - it even neared the dizzying heights of "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" ! Later I bought more Williamson records, but this one, along with "Songs of love & parting" and his recent "Mirrorman's Sequences" is the most captivating - amazingly well-crafted and filled with all one could wish for, both textual and musical. Earlier records like "American Stonehenge" sound like he was trying to find a new voice, but on "Glint" he definitely found one - and a strong one it is.
On cd, the original "Glint" is teamed up with some new unreleased songs, which are all great.
On the original lp, Robin plays with the Merry Band - of which he has said he's never worked with better musicians - and it shows ! The songs I love best are "The road the gypsies go", "The woodcutter's song" with its great instrumental coda, "By weary well" and of course the epic "Five denials on Merlin's grave".
Of the added songs especially "Song of Mabon" and "The Fair" stand out, as well as the intriguing "The Fair Dance", which evokes the weird atmosphere of his "Dancing of the Lord of Weir" which graces his "Myrrh" album. "Lammas" has been re-recorded on "Ten of Songs", and sounds better there. "Edinburgh", though a great effort, is not completely satisfying.
I was very happy with the release of the album on cd - and also very pleased with the additions, although, in some sense, these have destroyed the intimacy and the sense of completeness of the original. But I can still play the lp, can't I ?
Chillingly good........1998-06-16
This CD may be the best example of a Bardic performance anywhere. It's a rich mixture of songs and spoken pieces, traditional tunes and original ones, following both timeless mythic themes and intensely personal ones. I love it.
The two showpieces of this album have to be "Five Denials on Merlin's Grave" and "Edinburgh", each of which is over ten minutes long. They're both spoken pieces; long, lovingly-crafted poems evoking wonderfully intense moods. That's about the extent of the similarity, however. "Five Denials" traces the history of the British Isles, comparing the dry historical texts with the meaty stuff of myth and poetry, resounding always with the refrain "I will not forget!" "Edinburgh" plays with layered voices and sound effects to paint a picture of a city haunted by the ghosts of its past, and filled with a population shaped by the haunting.
Other pieces on the album should not be ignored, however. "Mabon's Song" sends chills down my spine every time I hear it, "Lough Foyle" is fun and funny, and "Hard Wood Logs" takes and old rhyme that my Grandfather hung in his woodshed and sets it to music.
All in all, this album illustrates a flexibility and artistry that makes Mr. Williamson, in my humble opinion, one of the last True Bards.
Buy it. Listen to it. Enjoy it.
