This is Marisa Monte's first CD since 2002, and it's also the companion release to her samba-centered Universo Au Meu Redor recording. On this project, Monte reunites with her Tribalistas partners, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, along with special guests including cellist Jaques Morelenbaum and pianist Joao Donato. The vibe is what you would expect from Monte: saudade-soaked lyrics with dreamy, layered synth and electric keyboards draped over Brazilian percussion and guitars. Having a baby has mellowed her out, as evidenced by the laid-back lilt on "A Prineira Pedra" and "Pra Ser Sincero" and the breezy backbeats of "Levante." "O Rio" was co-written by Seu Jorge, and the title track is what you're probably going to hear on your iPod. Clearly, there are a lot of Brazilian singers out there, but Monte's musical and emotional growth make her stand out. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars music on a 1 star CD.......2007-06-13

Marisa Monte's voice is as gorgeous as a woman's voice can ever hope to be and the songs in this album are beautiful. You will want to take this music everywhere with you, in your CD player and in your personal digital player.

However, EMI has made sure that it is not easy for you to use iTunes to rip the music and create AAC files for your iPod. The CD carries a Windows program to protect the music content and to restrict the ways in which you are allowed to use the content that you have paid for. Pop it in to your computer's CD drive on a Windows machine and the Autorun feature takes control. It will allow you to burn identical copies for back up (carrying the nasty program with them) or to generate WMA files at 128 kpbs encoding. EMI has made these decisions for you and only with some pain you can bypass them. Their website states that it's Apple who is at fault for not licensing their DRM to third parties. This makes this CD unusable in iTunes. This thin excuse collapses when you consider that even using Windows Media you cannot freely choose the encoding bit rate for the music you bought.

Fortunately, I discovered that I could use a Linux ripper (grip) to extract the tracks as .wav and then use them to burn a real audio CD without this abominable "copy control" program which is sold as an "enhancement" to this product. The clean audio CD is iTunes friendly and only with this gimmick you can generate the AAC files for your iPod. Shame on EMI for making me waste an hour of my time to be able to use the content I paid for in the way that is most convenient to me.

After one hour of monkey around, I finally can enjoy Marisa's beautiful music in the digital player that I own. No thanks to EMI for the hassle.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable........2007-01-10

A leading figure in Brazilian pop for 15 years, Marisa Monte had her biggest hit with the collaborative project "Tribalistas" (2002), and these simultaneously released albums are her first solo works since 2000.
"Universo ao Meu Redor" is the more accessible, a slightly overproduced chamber pop project casting a fond ear over more than 50 years of samba history."Universo Au Meu Redor" (The Universe Around Me) came from Monte's loving investigation of classic samba from the 1940s and '50s, which is more lyrical than the revved-up carnival version familiar to most North Americans.
For "Universo" she interviewed older samba artists and their families and collaborators, producing songs that had never been recorded and writing new ones inspired by a different musical era and ethos with which she felt much in common.

Highlights include undiscovered gems such as the instantly memorable "Meu Canario" and "Perdoa Meu Amor", with its luminous harp and cavaquinho (Brazilian ukulele) duet.
There is even a dutifully desafinado (out of tune) cameo by David Byrne on "Statue of Liberty".

Monte's other new record, "Infinito Particular" (Infinite Private) was the result of two years of cataloging and organizing 15 years of Monte's own music.
The initial goal was to digitally record work she had on paper or cassette. But it became an elaborate musical and personal journey. Monte invited several musicians, including American composer Phillip Glass, to do arrangements for a simple quartet -- cello, bassoon, violin and trumpet, seeking new sounds and new meaning from her music.
In few words, it consists of previously abandoned or finished-and-forgotten originals co-written throughout Monte's career.
Despite several slow growers, neither her extraordinary honeyed vocals, nor Alê Siqueira's inventive production, can quite distract from the sense that these are immaculately dressed off-cuts.

5 out of 5 stars Again be prepared to be transported to a celestial world.......2006-10-22

Marisa Monte has done it again with an album where all the songs are soft, clear and relaxing.

If you are into brazilian contemporary, you cannot miss Marisa Monte. As a raod warrior I carry her in my pack of cds to help me relax, order my thoughts and let go.

I would add that I did expect a bit more variation, for her voice is well adapted to every style she wishes to explore. Yet this album is quite the same in all its tone (which is not bad, but if you are new to MM better start with roses and carbon).

5 out of 5 stars Mastery of the fado.......2006-05-01

Having just recently bought Madredeus's latest release after attending the Um Amor Infinito world tour, it is my opinion that this is one of their best albums in years. I found Movimento rather disappointing, was pleasantly surprised by Faluas do Tejo, and was left reeling after hearing the songs from this last CD live. The fado (traditional Portuguese music) is evocative of sadness, longing, beauty and the peace of rural life, and no one can perform it like Madredeus. Teresa Salgueiro's voice in Um Amor Infinito is wonderful as always and there are many sweet and melodic songs that I find myself trying to whistle afterwards (though it is, of course, impossible). If you don't know Madredeus and don't know which CD to buy, go for Ainda (music from Lisbon Story) and, if you like that one, buy Um Amor... It has become my personal favorite and it won't disappoint.

3 out of 5 stars interesting, but singer has problems.......2006-01-19

This album would be very nice, and is in places, but the singer has a bad tendency to sing flat. To some people, like me, this is very distracting. What is really weird is they fix this stuff "in the mix" all the time.

    Too bad.

    3 out of 5 stars Copy Controlled.......2004-12-11

It is not mentioned here, but this disc is copy controlled.

--- On some equipment, for example car CD players playback
    --- problems may be encountered.

I have not listened it yet. The 3 stars are not the FA.

5 out of 5 stars Portuguese, not Spanish.......2004-09-30

Just to complete the previous comment:
Madredeus are Portuguese, and obviously the songs are not in Spanish. That Portuguese sounds like Japanese is also new to me. I understand Portuguese, but I don't understand a word of Japanese.
Perhaps Portuguese similar to Japanese means that for somebody who doesn't understand both (or better, all three if we include Spanish) it sounds exotic.
The song "Moro em Lisboa" should at least have given a hint, assuming that ... we have an idea, where that is.
A suggestion for who likes this album:
Wim Wenders "Lisbon Story" is a really nice movie about Lisbon (cheating off the terrific traffic in Lisbon). Madredeus appear in the movie and sing a few songs (The soundtrack was their album "Ainda").

5 out of 5 stars I love this and am a metalhead? What?.......2004-09-15

So yeah, this is just about one of the greatest CDs ever, but not quite. In its genre, it's sooo incredibly amazing. You seriously have to buy this if you are even interested in this type of thing. It's basically Spanish acoustic-type stuff with a Spanish female vocalist that almost sounds Japanese. Very relaxing stuff. My favorite song happens to be the only one without singing ("O Olival A Passo, A Trote E A Galope"), despite the fact that I love this chick's addictive hard pronunciation (though at the same time having a pillowy fading voice). You seriously have to love this if heavy metal fans can even appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars concepçao perfeita .......2007-03-18

First, I believe this is the most ravishingly beautiful CD Marisa Monte has created. Yes, I have "Universo ao meu redeo." I love that completely too. As she has said interviews, she has released her unidentical twins in 2006.

Songs are short here. Hardly any are longer than 3 minutes. If you measure a CD by its length in minutes, then you will be disappointed. If you measure it by quality, then no. Her conception in this album is as perfect as I have ever heard from her. The songs, she says, were from several years or back composing, and if so, she has assembled a complete concept such I never have heard from her.

There is so much here. (Although Marisa has created so much beautiful music in the past, that . . . who can compare?) Dance tunes like "Aquela" and lyrical poems too. Brazilian music is almost all intensely lyrical. You must understand the Portuguese language or find a translation to really plump the depths of what is going on in the song.

Regardless, you can still be seduced by the sound. And it is here, in spades.

Here she composes songs with Carlinhos Brown and others, and I can't find anything that is not just wonderful. There is not one song here I would wish to set aside for another one. They are all equally wonderful.

If you love this and want more, go get Marisa's first CD. Or Memórias, Crônicas & Declarações De Amor. This CD is the basis of her concert DVD from her Rio de Janeiro concert and buy that too. Then you will start to know her.

Sorry Amazon, but both new albums by MM are available on itunes....

No problems transferring them to your ipod or sharing...

3 out of 5 stars I may be MM's biggest fan, but this album doesn't thrill.......2006-12-08

Honestly, Infinito Particular isn't her best work. I would put it on par with "Mais". It does not being to compare with "Memorias..." or "Cor De Rosa..." By no means is this a bad album, but it doesn't have any tracks that stand out. There are no Magalabares, Diariamentes, Maria de Verdades, or even a Nao Va Embora type track on this album. I only give it three stars because I am such a huge MM fan, and after such a long wait, we got two mediocre albums, when I was hoping for something that would dominate my IPod for the next few years.

      5 out of 5 stars A great recording from a true artist.......2006-11-18

I've been listening to Marisa's music since 1991 and I think this new cd ranks among her finest works. It may not be as immediately accessible as Rose and Charcoal or Mais but if you listen to it a few times you will find that this album is the work of a mature artist with depth (not just an empty body with no soul like too many popular musicians today).

The second track on this cd (Vilarejo) is probably one of her most beautiful compositions ever (I would rank it next to 'Segue o Seco' from Rose and Charcoal). There is a great video that she produced for Vilarejo - you can look for it on Youtube.

      2 out of 5 stars Ho Hum.......2006-10-19

Unmemorable. Marisa Monte has lost her edge. She still has that beautiful voice, but these songs are flat little diddies she probably sings in the shower. They have no power, no staying power, and they are clearly not a challenge to her vocally or artistically. Pass.

This latest album from the Italian rock group Litfiba is one of their most listenable to date. Their melodies are more mellow, Pelù is more restrained. The opening song: Il mio corpo che cambia (my changing body) is very memorable, as is another hit from the album: Vivere il mio tempo (To live my time). There is even a song mostly in English: Sexy dream. If you've never heard of Litfiba, this album is a pleasant start to becoming a fan.

I have just listened to the whole CD and except for three tracks I think Pippo's singing is excellent. We have to listen to this CD for what it really is.A re-recording of live performances dating back almost 50 years. We can't expect today's digital quality recordings sound. On the first track,we hear Che Gelida Manina from a 31 year old Pippo who obviously was having a bad night, which is not uncommon with most singers.Tracks 18 & 19 definitely show Pippo in decline, but I didn't find band 18 as bad as another reviewer did.I counted only two vocal flaws. The rest of the aria is sung not that bad for a declining Pippo.Track 19 is sung well, but as in track 18 the voice sounds like it's getting tired. The rest of the singing on the CD,I enjoyed, especially the Addio Alla Madre.I would say that is my favorite on the CD.In my opinion,it's an ecellent CD for the price and it does contain some excellent singing and also is of historical value.

      Pippo's Biggest Fan.

      4 out of 5 stars A musical history.......1999-12-12

I purchased this recording when it first became available. It is an important for as a historical document on one of the greatest tenors in the history of opera. Yes, his voice has a very apparent decline. And yes track 18 (Una furitiva lagrima) has cracked notes and other obvious vocal flaws. What the other reviewer has missed (but the audience didn't - which is why the aria was greeted with such enthusiasm) was the passion, the emotion that Di Stefano put into his singing. I make no excuses, I am an ardent Di Stefano devotee. His early singing was glorious, pure beauty. His later singing lost it's pure beauty, but gained passion and emotion.

This disc is important because it traces this transition.

3 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard Di Stefano fans.......1999-03-24

I picked up this CD on a whim. The liner notes are useful, and describe the meteoric rise and fall of DiStefano's career, his temperment and ego.

The CD covers a period of only 11 years, but the deterioration of his voice during that period is frightening. Track 1 (1962) 'Che Gelida Manina' showcases a much fresher voice, but he strains terribly for the high 'C' and never even gets close. Track 18 (1963) 'Una furtiva lagrima' is full of embarrassments- chokes, flat notes, etc. - yet the live audience eats it up.

Di Stefano had stopped singing by the time I became an opera fan. This disk clearly shows why. Being a famous operatic tenor is not always about vocal quality (James McCracken, anyone?), and Di Stefano was certainly an exciting siger. There is some beautiful music on this CD, but I find it to be of mostly historical interest.

5 out of 5 stars Still A Great Band After More Than 35 Years!!!.......2007-04-15

I can't believe this CD hasn't been reviewed here yet. I got it over a year ago, and I cannot get over how fresh their sound is on this release. They continue to amaze with their diversity (they use some sitar here and there) instrumentally and compositionally. 32 years after the release of Uomo di Pezza, they are on top of their game with L'Infinito. Although the keyboardist has changed, they still have a Hammond organ-driven sound, which is still in the style of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. There are tender ballads, funky organ-driven rockers, and world-beat (staying with the times) songs. Each song flows into the next, giving the relatively short album a concept feel to it. Aldo Tagliapietra's voice is as strong as ever, and remains the trademark of the band (along with the keyboard stylings). If you are a fan of earlier works, or enjoy ELP, DO ADD THIS to your collection. You won't regret it.
