Cal Tjader - Greatest Hits.......2007-06-09

This is music that could raise the dead. My favorite track is Ginza Samba with it's remarkable guitar opening by Eddie Duran and Tjader and Stan Getz trading solos. There is much more however. The percussion of Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria kicks butt on many of the tracks and on tunes Viva Cepeda and Afro Blue they are devastating. Armando Peraza (who later played with Santana) is also wondeful on the tracks where he is featured. Cal Tjader plays the vibes with an amazing rhythmic intensity that blends with the percussion and yet rises above it in some of the sweetest improvisation on this instrument ever recorded. This CD is wonderful and should appeal to fans of latin jazz as well as those who love the vibes playing of Milt Jackson or Bobby Hutcherson.Well worth checking out.

Latin jazz defined! You owe yourself this CD........2003-11-02

So you like jazz? or Latin music? or Latin jazz? Well then, you must be reading this out of curiousity because I know you already have this CD or the music on it. No? Well, then you owe yourself this CD because this is a must-have addition to any jazz or Latin music collection.

Cal Tjader is easily the most famous non-Latino leader of a Latin jazz band. He crossed back and forth between the worlds of Latin jazz and mainstream bop and made some wonderful music in the processs. His light, happy style on vibes worked in both styles and he also played drums, timbales and bongos. He had a huge influence on other muscians including Carlos Santana, and through him, Latin rock.

This 2CD set is actually two 'best of' LPs rereleased on CDs and the compilation is excellent and the engineering is very good as well. The list of contributing musicians on this CD reads like a who's who in West Coast and Latin jazz! The happy result is a set that virtually defines a genre and belongs in any jazz collection or any collection of Latin music.

Oh, and this is happy, upbeat music you'll enjoy even if you don't have a jazz or Latin collection! Get it and I'll bet you won't regret it.

CAL TJADER- GREATEST HITS.......2000-05-22

Cal Tjader's Greatest Hits, features many of his very best recordings with the Fantasy Label. The best song in this compilation being Cal Tjader's interpretation of Cuba's Chano Pozo's "Soul Sauce/Wachi Wara". This original version of Pozo's hit, in my opinion, has a better musical arrangement, percussion and more "pep" than his 1964-65 version he later recorded for the Verve label. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Rolando Lozano, Eddie Cano, Mongo Santamaria, Luis Miranda, Stan Getz, Vince Guaraldi, Willie Bobo, Victor Venegas, Bayardo Velarde, etc. this album is a must for all Cal Tjader and jazz fans.

Muffled.......2006-11-03

This is a decent enough recording, but it's not anywhere near the best that I have heard. The Andre Previn/LSO recording is much better mixed; at times it seems like there's a muffle on the mikes, or that you're hearing it from a distance.

If I wanted good, dynamic background music, I'd do this. If I wanted to really listen to the music, I'd pick another version.

Somewhat disappointing........2003-09-10

I bought this for the full-length rendition of Rhapsody in Blue. I found the brass too tinny sounding, and the rhythm off in a few places. I like the snippet of this song on the "Best of the Milleneum" CD much better.

Gershwin At His Best in Hearts!.......2003-03-19

To someone who came along as a teenage boy in the mid-1940's, this CD has the elements of authenticity, even surprise, musical history, highly intense performances, and ways evoking memories of emotional highlights of my Youth. When mediocre orchestra 1st tackled Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at Smoky Mtn Music Camp we were preparing for Sunday's outdoor Concert. Pianos were played by two friends who've presided Music Dept at Carson-Newman College in East Tennessee. In the Trombone section was a skinny kid with too much hair and too big an ego! When our esteemed conductor began the opening bars the Clarinet Soloist, my close friend Danny Boy slide-up the chromatic scale with fleurish. He later became a NC Doctor! He likely plays clarinet for his own amazement in someone's Dixieland Band!

On this wondrous CD there are historic names like Bernstein, Kostelanez, John Williams and Michael Tilson Thomas, Conductors. Andre Previn, Yo-Yo Ma and Sarah Vaughan as Soloists. I would have a hard time choosing which may be called my favorite! It would depend on the day they are playing in my car... traveling to Columbia Seminary classes or GA Diagnostic Prison for lunch with Chaplain friends! I often sing along with the Rhapsody as I did in 1949 when Oscar Levant soloed with Chattanooga Orch. My very young wife was playing in the first violin section! Still today I am totally wiped out when anyone as intensely romantic as Sarah Vaughan sings "Summertime" or "I Loves You, Porgy!"

Is it not amazingly wondrous that someone could create so much enjoyable music in his short lifetime of 39 years? I never wish to part with this all-time favorite 10-Star Recording!

The best America has to offer!!.......1999-03-09

This is the best collection of his songs i have ever heard. That's probably because it features conductors like John Williams and Micheal Tilson Thomas. My personal favorite is the allegro agitato from the Concerto in F. I have other recordings of this song, but none of them can even come close to matching the excitement of this one.

Ever since Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría arrived in the United States from Cuba in the late 1940s and hooked up with bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, and Pérez Prado, he's been the most imitated conga drummer in Latin jazz and salsa music. Further, his pioneering flute-violin charanga bands have almost singly expanded the parameters of Latin sounds in America.

These 1960s Columbia Records sides contain his coveted hip-shaking pop covers with flutist Hubert Laws, master santero Julito Collazo, drummer Bernard Purdie, and trumpeter Marty Sheller, with Santamaría and company conjuring up fun and campy red-beans-and-rice versions of Top 40 soul classics. Santamaría lays the boogaloo down on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," the Temptations' "Cloud Nine," Ritchie Valens's "La Bamba" and Booker T. and the MG's' hit, "Green Onions." But make no mistake, Mongo Santamaría was no novelty act. 1960's: Early corporate controlled commercial "Latin-Jazz." Read the liner notes. Mongo did it for the opportunity Columbia offered him and for the bread! He was making a living doing what he loved, can't really bust his chops for that. But he was/is a talent and his band had a sound. Okay it's commercial... but so was just about everything else on the radio in the 60's. Think about it... 60's radio, Beatles, Honky Tonk, Commercial Jazz -- the 70's had some alternative/progressive stuff going on early, but then the suits took over... 80's commercialism, 90's commercialism... here we are 21st century... what have we got? 60's radio... commercial, "smooth jazz"... maybe Mongo was the smooth jazz of the 60's... wait, wasn't that the West Coast Jazz scene? Mongo is early Latin Jazz. Earth, Wind and Fire, Santana, Mandrill were all inspired by it. If you're into a heavy jazz experience... this ain't it brother and sisters. But it's ALL good!

Pink 'Palm Beach'.......2003-10-31

The last cut, the exquisite 'Afro Blue' is worth the price of the CD or, at least, that is what I am telling myself now that I own it. 'Watermelon Man' adds the other star for nostalgia's sake and 'Chili Beans' is admittedly funky. What remains though is a strange excursion into commercial bugaloo and R&B - think 'Austin Powers' meets 'Beach Blanket Bingo' - actually painful to listen to. It must have been a case of an artist (get 'Afro Roots' or 'Sabroso') providing what his producers and market demanded. Danceability? If you're throwing a 'Retro-Retro 60's' party, this is the CD for it; bring your pink 'Palm Beach' sport coat and your madras shorts.

A Man Called Mongo........2003-05-22

During his long and extensive career, Mongo Santamaria fused sensual Cuban rhythms with r&b and jazz, making him one of the most revered musicians of our time. This hits collection compiles sixteen of the percussionist's most essential recordings, and they all have "class" written all over them. Covering material from the mid to late 1960s, the music here conjures up images of a hot July beach party, tequilas and all. He admirably covers the Otis Redding classic "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay"--years before Michael Bolton had the chance to butcher it. There's also the groovy sax-flavored "Twenty Five Miles," the breezy "Fat Back," and "Cold Sweat." But this disc saves the best for last with the closing track, a 10 minute live recording of "Afro Blue." If you want to bear witness to the depth of Mongo's talent, then hear this jam, which is a memorable mix of Cuban percussion and traditional jazz. Thanks to the perfect harmony in which the band performs, "Afro Blue" is a brilliant piece of work that gets under your skin and stubbornly stays there. To be honest, I was introduced to Santamaria through my Dad, who was a huge fan of not only jazz, but particularly Latin-flavored jazz. When I learned of Mongo's passing, I revisited his work and decided to pick up this disc, which instantly gave me childhood memories. But even more important than that, this hits collection is a great survey that loudly answers the question, "What was so great about Mongo Santamaria?" The answer lies in this CD.

Dizzy Gilepie is great trumpeter, I just can't stand those flatted fifths. THey make no sense. THey make it unmelodic. I love his sound, and Perker is good as well but I wish they wouldn't have played those notes

Petrol Records is an Australia-based company founded by former INX manager Chris Murphy that specialized in pop and rock before branching off into reggaeton and world music. Though the 12 tracks assembled on this compilation represent a good sampling of the son, montuno, bolero, and descarga genres that characterize Cuba's powerful mix of Spanish and African influences, the declaration that this disc represents "The Greatest Songs Ever" is enthusiastic at best. That said, there are some rare gems here, like Maraca's bouncy, "Tumbao Pa' Changuito," the immortal standard "El Manisero," known worldwide as "The Peanut Vendor," by Chira and Septeto Nacional, and the equally famous "Lagrimas Negras," performed by Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Pineiro, one of Cuba's most beloved conjunto ensembles. Selections by other groups, including Ad Libitum, Grupo Sonorama, and Los Naranjos, round out this collection, which is probably more suited for the Latin music neophyte than the seasoned listener. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Variety galore!.......2005-08-28

Although I much prefer their more recent music, this comprehensive compilation shows you how the band evolves and the different sounds which have been added.Maybe not the ideal choice for a salsa dj, but great if you like latin music(esp. Afro-cuban sounds).

Superb Compilation..........1999-12-19

This is a terrific introduction to Los Van Van, one of the most interesting bands in the world, for those who don't know much about them or those who have, say, one or two LVV records and want to hear more without having to buy a lot of CDs from their 30 year history. Any 2 CD compilation of a band with that long and varied a history is sure to leave out some favorites, but this set is well-chosen, particularly in the later years. Even better, it includes a fabulous 100-page plus booklet with a history of the band, lyrics in English and Spanish, discography and a list of the musicians who have been in and out of this group over the past three decades. My hat is off to the people who put this together. It is done with love and intelligence. Rare enough to see either of those. My only quibble is the absence of the some of the classic cha-chas from LVV's early period such as "De 5 a 7" but they can be had on other compilations. Also, I highly recommend LVV's new American release "Llego Van Van". It's a spectacular record, one of the classics of Latin dance music I think, which picks up just where this collection ends. Since Amazon has yet to put up any real information about this set, I'll just mention that it's two CDs, one devoted to 1969-1989, the second one to Van Van in the 90s. Hope Amazon puts up a track listing and some samples soon for other buyers. If you have Llego Van Van and are intrigued to hear more, this is well worth it!

An unsuccessful attempt to recycle garbage........1999-12-10

Listening to this CD is a close encounter with an Unbearably Faulty Object. The producers have attempted to recycle the multiple bad-quality recordings made by this band in Cuba and the quality just isn't there. Too bad.

Authentic & Real Sounds of Cuban Music.......2005-03-16

This albumn is Fantastic! Words can't express how awesome this music is... I was browsing in a book store and this albumn was playing. My feet starting moving uncontrollably! On top of that, every song played thereafter got better and better. I thought: "This is impossible! How can this be? Usually only 2-3 songs are good on an albumn..." That's when I knew I had to ask the sales person about this CD. You can hear all of the MASS VARIETY of instruments played (latin drums, piano, horns, flute, etc...) It makes feels like I'm in Cuba. I crave good music. With that being said...EVERY SINGLE SONG ON THIS ALBUMN IS HOT! Craving Satisfied. :)
