/p>Ah, Ireland, the land of sad love and happy war. The songs are funny, rousing, sad, uplifting and satirical all at the same time. Many of the songs, such as "Nell Flaherty's drake are camoflaged songs of protest against the British "oppressors." I find my self humming the songs and I'm not even Irish. What's even more unusual is my 17 year old son likes the songs too.
Great rebel music........1999-12-12 The Clancy's are at their best when singing about rebellion. This album will remind you just how much you hate the Brits!

Customer Reviews:
Great Irish Music.......2007-03-30 If you are new to the genre of Irish music, or just to the Dubliners and Clancy/Makem, then I would suggest this album. The selection of songs is great. Just remember, this is a Drinking Songs album. Don't expect any ballads. A note to Clancy/Makem fans: the tracks "Tim Finnegan's Wake", and "The Moonshiner" along with the introductions to "Juice of the Barley" and "Jug of Punch" are all previously unreleased material from the album "In Person at Carnegie Hall"
Perfect St. Pat's Pub CD.......2006-03-18 Each of the songs on this CD is worth listening to and singing poorly over a couple of pints. The fast paced songs are mixed well with a few slower ones, and each song is a gem.
This cd turned my Puerto Rican friend into an Irishman!.......2002-01-01 This is my favorite St. Patrick's Day cd and it's always a winner at parties. Top 40 shmorty...play this at your parties no matter what the crowd and watch all your friends become happy drunk irishmen right before your eyes as the party goes on.
The Dubliners do a few songs on this cd, but most are performed by the Clancy Brothers who are my absolute favorites. Powerful vocals and great lively music. Lotsa humor thrown in too.
Whiskey in the Jar performed by the Dubliners is Great!
Not too sure what song two is about, but the title is Beer, Beer, Beer.
Water is alright in Tay...Perfect song for drinkin'(especially a cold pint of Guiness).
The list goes on and on and then you get to my personal favorite: Finnegan's Wake...Fighting and drinking and people returning from the dead...A wonderful family get together song performed nicely by the Clancy Brothers. Lot's of comical stories in the music as in Juice of the Barley and Finnegan's Wake. The Parting Glass should not be played until nearly the end of any party...it's truly a parting song. Skip this until the end (I actually love this song, but when you hear it you will understand what I mean).
If you really want to liven up the party and you cater to a younger crowd, mix this cd with the punkish Dropkick Murphys music. They do some Irish folk covers like Rocky Road to Dublin, Finnegan's Wake etc...
Bainne na mo is an gamna and the juice of the barley for me!
Enjoy this cd and Don't Drink and Drive!
Because everyone's Irish once a year..........2001-04-03 There once was an album of green,
Full of songs about beer and poteen,
Twas great start to finish,
Likely 'cause of the Guinness,
So I give it five stars on your screen.
No Dirty Anglicans Allowed!.......2001-03-01 This is an excellent album to sing along with. I highly recommend it, but I do not think the Loyalists or anyone who sides with them have any right to enjoy these fantastic songs. They have caused enough harm to the great Irish people without now insulting them by attempting to share in their good and decent traditions. They should stick with their gloomy Protestant songs.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed in Dublin.......2007-07-27
I was disappointed in this cd. The first song is great! One of those you play again as soon as it's over, but after that...not much to get excited about. I've heard plenty of catchy irish pub songs that stick in your head long after you've heard them - and there aren't too many here. Too many slow, repetitive songs. There are much better choices out there. In addition, I agree with the other reviews here...it's unprofessional (and cheap looking) to not even bother to mention the singer's names. You gotta give credit where credit is due. That's just in bad taste.
Brought Back Memories.......2007-07-13
Lots of great songs, including a few I'd all but forgotten, and a couple good ones I don't think I ever heard before.
On time and in great shape........2007-04-16
My order was on time and in great shape.
A very decent intro for the price.......2005-03-15
First: The correct samples for "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" (which has a jacket photo of a man & woman drinking in a dim pub) are found under the listing for "The Best of Irish Pub Songs: 20 Great Favorites", which has a jacket illustration of a drawing of a pink pub front called "Dan's Pub"; seems there's some information confusion between the two listings. Where the samples are for the "pink pub" recording are I have no idea.)
I first bought "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" in cassette years ago to simply learn some pub songs before an Irish vacation. I wasn't looking for classic renditions or sublime technical achievement, just something to teach me the tunes.
For the price, I was very pleasantly surprised. The songs are great, and this assortment is hard to find in one recording. Whether the "pub atmosphere" in the background is contrived or authentic was irrelevant to me; I did feel that it enhanced the listening experience, however, so I think it's a nice touch. If inauthenticity in that kind of thing gets your cockles up, then look to the Clancy Brothers or any other Irish folk legends for "live" concert recordings, or Matt Molloy for an honest-to-gosh pub recording, but you won't find these tunes in one product for any price anywhere else. The only downsides I found with this economic recording were no lyric sheet, and tempos that might vary from "studio" versions of the same songs, but all in all, it's a very enjoyable little tape for a small investment.
Worst Irish CD EVER.......2004-12-14
This is the worst drinking song CD I have ever bought. For the record this is not the Jolly Beggermen in any way. Don't by this if you have a choice. The preformer kills the songs. I agree with the person who says that an Irish Drinking song recording should be done in an Irish Bar or Pub, recorded live.

the plough and the stars, indeed .......2006-06-26
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
In a sense it would seem that the source of my interest in the Dubliners would be apparent. My mother's people came over from Ireland to America on the famine ships in the 1840's. Not so, in my youth the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Machem were all that I would listen to for Irish, and particularly Irish political, songs. The Dubliners were a later acquired taste as I delved more into Irish history several years ago. I believe that the Dubliners are a little better musically than the Clancys and certainly Luke Kelly adds much with his deep whiskey-sodden voice to any song he leads. Politically, both groups cover many of the same songs- from traditional Croppy Boy, Boys of Wexford types to the songs of the Easter Uprising in 1916. The Dubliners, probably because they were based in and stayed in Ireland, have a bigger selection of songs reflecting the more current struggles for liberation. In short, the Dubliners measure up to my youthful standards for Irish political music. If you just want good old Irish sentimental material or party/bar music they have plenty of that here too. Check out A Pub with No Beer.
The Dubliners .......2006-01-04
The Dubliners are the first band in the 1960's to halmark a differnt style of music in ireland and is called traditional irish music. Oh there were folk bands before them and back to thousands of years of traditional irish music. Even so the Dubliners were the first to make money on it and by so doing inspired other traditional irish bands in ireland to do the same. I went to my homeland of Ireland in June of 2005 and people in ireland to me this that the dubliners inspired others to sing and write and make money on traditional irish music. In the 1940's to the 1950's ireland was listening to american music, jazz, big band music, blues and the like. It was not till the end of the 50's and the beginning of the 60's that traditional irish music came back to the forefront in ireland. Iam glad this happened. Being irish my self and growing up on traditonal irish music gives a person a close relationship with their people a

rst 4 albums recorded by The Dubliners for EMI Records during the period 1966-1969, when the guys were young and full of fire. The songs are performed with gusto and great musicianship. These classic albums have been long out of print in the U.S. and it's great to have them available again, and on CD! Absolutely a 5-star purchase for anyone who loves Irish music.

Something For Everyone -- Great Party CD!.......2006-04-03
I enjoy seasonal music. I love the fact that Music Choice on my cable system has a 'Seasonal Music' channel, because I think that music written for a specific time of year can help people to enjoy the holiday more.
Of course, when you're thinking about enjoying St. Patrick's Day more, people usually think about drinking a lot of green beer. And if you're one of those people, this is the CD compilation for you.
This CD has a lot more contemporary artists than the last Irish CD I reviewed: The Dropkick Murphys and The Pogues stand out in particular. The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners are also welcome additions to the CD.
There are still the old standbys - Frank Patterson sings the requisite "Danny Boy," The Dubliners contribute the title track "Whiskey In The Jar," and The Clancy Brothers offer up their rendition of the classic "Irish Rover." The Dropkick Murphys' take on "Wild Rover" was a high point for me, as was their "Fields of Athenry" - but then again, I'm a Dropkick Murphys fan anyway.
The songs on this compilation are fun, and singable (even if you can't sing - hey, who cares when you're drunk, right?). In two CDs, the only real disappointments were the two songs from The Pogues, whose live versions of "Dirty Old Town" and "Sally MacLennane" sound as if they were performed while the vocalist was plastered. That fits the theme of the compilation, but makes it tough to listen to. Listen to those two tracks later on in the evening and you'll be fine.
Of the two St. Patrick's Day offerings I was able to review this year, I'd say this one is my favorite. The music is more modern, and the performances more diverse. Plus you get two CDs, so you can listen longer. Enjoy, and Erin Go Bragh!
Nice but disparate (eclectic?) collection.......2006-03-15
The actual title is: "Whiskey In The Jar: Essential Irish Drinking Songs & Sing Alongs."
Amazon has the title reversed (with "Essential Irish Drinking..." first), so a search for "Whiskey In The Jar" won't find it! (ok, maybe it is better to have "Essential Irish Drinking" first).
Also note that a number of songs are "Live" recordings (that's not noted at this time in the Amazon song listing): Disc 1: Tracks 9, 10 & 11; on Disc 2: tracks 10, 14, 16 & 17 (the two Pogues songs on the disc are Live).
All good songs and first rate artists here, but quite a disparate range from very traditional to celtic rock. We used this CD as the basis for a great St. Patrick's day songs playlist for Cool Celtic (Music Sojourn) with similarly eclectic additions. The Pogues, the Young Dubliners, and The Drop Kick Murphys make up most of the more mod sounds on here - too bad that the Pogues version of "Whiskey In The Jar" didn't make it on this CD (it would have provided the same kind of contrast with the Dubliners' version as the rest of the cd does with the mix of artists & songs). At least it progresses through the tunes on each disc from more traditional to more punk - if you're drinking along with the tunes as they play, that ought to work out just about right by the end. This collection may be too eclectic for some. Those looking for the Traditional songs get more for their money here and can ignore the few rockers at the end of each disc. Those into the Pogues and Drop Kick Murphys more rockus sounds may not find enough of that to keep it playing except for around St. Patrick's day each year. However, for that purpose, it does satisfy!

Customer Reviews:
reissue of 2 great Tradition Records LPs: "Heather and Glen" & "Classic Scots Ballads".......2006-08-27 This CD is a reissue of 2 great Tradition Records LPs, "Heather and Glen", and just part of "Classic Scots Ballads". These traditional songs were crafted hundreds of years ago in the highly poetic culture of Scotland.
"Heather and Glen" holds field recording made by Alan Lomax, Calum McLean, and Hamish Henderson in 1950-51. The short notes that accompany the CD are a hack job, skimmed from Lomax's LP notes, with addded misleading references pubs and whiskey. The first side of the original LP has Scots Lowlands songs, including the magnificent Aberdeen singer Jeanie Robertson (v. The Queen Among the Heather: The Alan Lomax Portait Series ). The second side of the LP has Gaelic songs from the Hebrides: waulking songs (to thicken newly-woven wool), a wonderful milking song, and passionate lyrical songs. I feel that these early recording by Flora MacNeil (Lament for William Chisholm & Sister's Lament) are perhaps more direcly impassioned than her later CDs such "Craobh Nan Ubhal". I see that the waulking songs are part of the recently-issued "Gaelic Songs of Scotland: Women at Work in the Western Isles". I can only hope that the group working on the Alan Lomax collection will continue by issuing CDs for Flora MacNeil and Alan MacDonald.
Tracks 20-25 are from "Classic Scots Ballads", an early collaboration by Ewan McColl & Peggy Seeger, who did much to build the British folk song revival. The full LP was reissued in 1997, with extensive liner notes.
The reason that I mention the CD's pitiful liner notes, is because the notes should help us understand the depth and cultural background of the songs. For example, we should know that "Lament for William Chisholm" was composed (probably by his widow) after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746. The Gaelic words weave together love, and pride and a great sense of personal loss for her fair young husband:
"O young Charles Stuart, it is your cause that left me desolate.
You took from me everything I had, in the war for your sake.
I do not mourn for my sheep or cattle, but for my husband.
Since that day, I was left a widow with nothing in the world but my shirt.
O my fair young love."

Scottish Drinking And Pipe Songs.......2004-07-26 Who would ever think that Scottish Drinking And Pipe Songs would be something you would listen to? I didn't think it would be really good - but I was most certainly wrong. There are some songs on this album that or boring, annoying, or just not interesting, but the majority are wonderful. The best ones are:
The Elfin Knight, which is like a Scarborough Fair song; in this version, the man tells the woman to sew him a sack with no needlework, wash it in the well with no water - etcetera - but then she asks him to plow an acre of land between the salt sea and the sea strand, sow it with one sickle of leather and so on, and then he can have his shirt. I thought it was funny.
The Maid Gaed To The Mill is a fast, fun song, very light
The Gairdener Chyld [a version is also sung by June Tabor and] is about a gardener courting a lady, but she is very rude to him (at least that is what I have gathered).
Aikendrum is a fast, fun song, though in a 'sad' melody.
The False Lover Won Back is just what it sounds like - he leaves her, and she follows and is very persistant that he love her and stay with her. In the end she gets him back.
Johnny Lad is a good song, with good music (though I really haven't listened to the lyrics).
Jack MacGraw is a very funny song with a good melody as well.
The majority of the songs are sung by Ewan MacColl
More to this than Bagpipes.......2002-07-02 I have the LP. When I first listened to it, I was surprised by the ancient sound of the waulking songs; music quite different than the traditional things one hears from Scotland. Quite interesting to listen to. Too bad one cannot sample them before purchasing CD.
Authentic Scottish folk tunes.......2001-11-17 Alan Lomax collected these tunes right from the source. He took his tape recorder to the pubs, to the islands and highlands, to the farmhouses and to the ceilidh halls. The result is some of the finest, most authentic piping, fiddling and singing that you will ever hear.
The recordings are not hi-tech, but they are of outstanding quality. The majority of the songs are single instrument. The singers are unaccompanied. There is a nice blend of men's songs and women's songs, as well as a blend of English and Gaelic tunes. The singers are not musicians by profession, but each voice is clear and powerful.
As a nod to the authenticity of the recordings, there is a woman who believes that her cow will produce more milk if she sings to it. The recording of her song, "Gentle Lady" is made while she milks the cow and you can hear the milk hitting the bucket to keep time. A fine collection of waulking songs is made while the women waulk the tweed.
Scottish Piping and Drinking Songs.......2000-03-09 If you like real folks songs sung by real folks and real music you will love this album. The singers may not have the most beautiful voices but if you close your eyes you can easily imagine yourself in a quaint Scottish pub filled with good drink and great friends! A definite favorite of mine!

In the case of this buoyant CD, "various artists" actually means "Clancy Brothers," since there is always a Clancy or more to be found on each tune. Then again, who else do you want to hear sing "Irish pub songs" anyway? Most of the 18 songs find the Brothers joining forces with Lou Killen; three cuts feature Liam in solo performance and one features the Brothers with Robbie O'Connell. Like the Eskimos and snow, the Irish seem to have a million words for alcohol and all of them seem to pop up here at some point. Mixed in with the jolly drinking songs are songs about women, history, odd characters, and politics, but they don't spoil the joyous mood and they last just long enough for you to refill your jug. By the way, Bob Dylan fans will want to hear O'Connell and the Clancys' spot-on reworking of "Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie," a tune that Dylan based on the Clancys' reading of "Brennan on the Moor." --Marc Greilsamer

Great.......2006-11-02
This is the best album I have in the spirit of Irish pub or Drinking songs. I recomend this with all my heart being I am part Irish!!!
Love it!.......2005-03-12
My husband and I just love this CD. We've played it for all our friends and now I think they all own copies. We went out the other night to a pub and heard one of the songs being played, it was great to sing along to. I would highly recommend it!!
Good, Clean, Authentic Fun-.......2001-02-16
What a great album for those of us purists, even if we aren't Irish. Irish Pub Songs is the kind of music you put on when having a group of friends over for the world's greatest beverage. My favorite song is Beer, Beer, Beer- everybody sing along. I recommend this album for those of you who enjoy a good barley pop and festive drinking music.

Customer Reviews:
Great to hear some old familiar songs, but songs to short........2006-02-11
Many of the songs listed were amoung my favorites, I was so excited to hear this CD. But when I recieved it. Each song listed only has a verse or two and is part of a 3-4 song blend all crammed into a 4 minute song track. So you really don't get the full enjoyment of the whole song. You only get about a minute of each song. The rendition of danny boy was terrible. The song has a terrible background music you'd find on an electric piano keyboard under cheesey DANCE beat. Seriously a dance beat to Dannyboy? Other than the dannyboy fiasco and the briefness of each song grouped on each track, the music was pretty good, I loved hearing all the songs my grandfather and his brothers would sing, like Moonshiner. But I would prefer to listen to the full version of my favorite pub songs. Not the condensed combinations of one or two versus of several songs crammed into one track on the cd. The songs just didn't flow. I'd recommend a different CD.
Dreadful Example of Irish Music.......2003-02-09
Oh, where to begin - the fake brogue used or the simply terrible sounds altogether? Trust me, you'll NEVER hear this kind of dreadful music in the pubs in Ireland - UNLESS, of course, the only pub you enter happens to be Durty Nelly's the night before your flight back home from Shannon.
Imagine handing a CD by Lawrence Welk to some foreigner and telling them "this is a very good example of American music", and that's what you have here that is supposed to be representative of Irish music.
This is the sort of thing that they play in the retirement homes on St. Patrick's Day, and then they put the CD away for another 364 days.
A Little Bit of Irishness.......2001-09-14
This CD has wonderful, classic folk songs from Ireland. It makes me feel like I am in a pub with a bunch of friends having a drink. The music is upbeat and toe-tapping. My two-year old loves to dance to it and it always puts me in a better mood.
