5 out of 5 stars Nice massage music. .......2007-06-09

I own a day spa and my therapists all enjoy this music. It is great for relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Ambient Music.......2005-10-22

This is the sort of rare CD that you can turn on, set "repeat CD" and not touch it for the day; or even for days! I have had this CD for many, many years... and it has never lost its appeal. PS: This is NOT "upbeat" jazzy ambient; but, mellow "calm you down" ambient. Each track is unique.

4 out of 5 stars Lydia.......2005-05-21

Most of the tracks on this album are very good, but Lydia by Tim Story is special. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever come across.

5 out of 5 stars A tapestry of earth and music..........2002-09-06

This is a marvelously moving album to experience. While all the artists are different the album flows together very nicely. It moves along at its own pace, far far different than the pace of much of the everyday world in which we live. It is mellow and is not something you actively listen to although over time the melodies become quite clear and, oddly enough, captivating even exciting, though on a different level.

Play it in the background or play it in the car and suddenly an entirely different ambience is created. It's a beautiful work. I never tire of it and it embraces whatever mood I'm in and allows it to unfold in a rhythm all its own. You won't regret it a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Path for yoga, for relaxation.......2000-10-16

As a Yoga instructor and artist I am constantly seaching for that special flow- that music that you consciously hear as you begin yoga or meditation, but has the ability to disappear into the recesses of your mind as your awareness attunes to a different level. Path invokes relaxation. It is fast enough to use in anything involving movement, yet not so fast you feel hurried in any way. I am not sure that it would be slow enough for pure meditation. Every musical creation on this CD is different, yet it flows seemlessly. I also bought YogaZone, Music for Yoga- it was good-a few shared artists- but nothing compared to Path. If you are looking for a complement to your yoga, or want some music to create a relaxed atomosphere this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Karunesh is goooooodddd!!!!.......2005-11-15

This disciple of Osho comes up with some melodious tracks... which have remarkable good soothing and calming effect on ur mind. A mix of Indian and African tunes the album is a gem, a must have if you are a lover of Fusion music. The use of high bass flute in Alibaba, and Call of Tribes make them my personal favorites...

5 out of 5 stars Just My Opinion.......2005-09-07

I bought this CD five years ago on a whim...knew nothing about Karunesh or his music. During the first year I listened to it several times a week. Now, five years later, it continues to be one of my all time favorite CD's. The music from this CD is 'transcendental'. I can't think of any other way to describe it. I get a deep spiritual feeling from the music each time I listen to it. I can always count on this CD to put my head and heart in the right place. I've shared this CD with friends and family. Almost every one has mentioned to me sometime later how much they enjoy this music. It seems to touch a part of ourselves that longs for a connection with something larger than our little egoic selves and confirms humanity as community, despite borders and distance. I wish I could personally thank Karunesh his work with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD.......2005-08-06

This CD is amazing! The music is so beautiful, unique, and moving! Its rich exotic rhythms are unforgettable! This is one of the best world music CDs!

2 out of 5 stars Karunesh disappoints in global spirit(GS)!.......2004-11-16

I read a lot of great reviews on karunesh and bought this so-called "platinum best seller" but it really SUCKS!! I'd great opinion on this osho disciple and his fusion music, however this album is in a totally different and dull league compared to his gems-zen breakfast and nirvana cafe!
GS is too oriental, synthetic and clearly lacks harmony. Only solitude and earth song does well and the other ones are very indian with incoherent african beats.

Overall it's only slightly better than a dumb Bollywood/Hindi movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece !!!.......2004-08-12

I own 2 karunesh CD's up until now and I must say I am impressed. I delved into world music only recently, but I am happy I started with karunesh. "Beyond Heaven" was the follow up to this one. But Global spirit is the one which started the ball rolling for karunesh. This CD is pure Gold.

Call of tribes: Beautiful Indian tune on different kinds of flute with percussion, and African tribal chorus and shouts.

Punjab: Beautiful Hindi song. Its called Punjab as it has a Punjabi flavor as parts are sung in Punjabi. Punjab being a state in northern India. watch out for the beautiful twisty-turny violin solo which appears on this song. This made it to the Buddha bar series by Claude challe and was very successful on the Buddha bar series compilation.

Native ritual: African tribal chant with percussion and synthesized beats, This piece is beat driven. This beat will rev you up if you are feeling lazy. Also highlight, A woman/girl's voice singing a single line at properly placed intervals adds a neat touch to this piece.

Earthsong: Song with African tribal flavor. Feels like a learned old tribal is telling us about something. Nice synthesizers and beats. And of course nice synthesized flutes.

Bombay pure: Sanskrit sloka (sacred chants in Sankrit, Sanksrit being ancient language of indian subcontinent from which all indian dialects have directly or indirectly evolved) along electronic beats makes for beautiful fusion.

Ancient secrets: Africa tribal song again. Also the Australian didgeridoo makes its appearance here. Nice simple keyboard tune follows.

Kubula Ma: African Tribal flavor with a trendy dance floor rhythm. I swear this will make you get up and shake your booty if its not already shaking in the chair you have been sitting on. Beautiful oriental flute interlude also punctuates. you also have a nice table and African drums which get accentuated when we are well into the track.

Alibaba: This is a super super track. This piece also made it to the Buddha bar series by Claude Challe. Sensual flutes melodic passages and sensitive percussive percussive. After that we get an amazing breezy and fresh guitar solo where you feel you are among palm trees and in the vicinity of a waterfall only to be broken by beautifully rendered and periodic Arabic "allampanah" cries.
High-light are the flutes and the guitar solo here.

Solitude: fantastic track. A north Indian ghazal with beautiful percussive arrangement. The super highlight on this track is the irresistible Chinese flavor violin solo which although worlds apart from Indian fare seems to somehow mesh perfectly well with the Indian ghazal.

Earthsong (reprise): Repeat of earthsong albeit with only the vocal and then karunesh himself chanting some Sanskrit verse.

No bummer on this CD. Worth it's weight in gold.

Note: All the instruments except the violin and sitar are fully played by Karunesh himself. Also Karunesh is the co-producer of the Buddha bar volume 3.

Both Thumbs up !!!!

Then close your eyes and go beyond your wildest dreams and fantasies. This music will make love to you as none other. I anxiously await a new release, and have done so for two years.

This CD ( my fave ) and their first one, "Beneath the Veil" will transcend you.

A music lover and collector, for years, these are my two top picks, for exotic and sensual. Beyond Deepak,Enigma and Rasa and any others in this New Age field, which has been my musical life for several years.

5 out of 5 stars Join the Dance.......2003-02-18

I absolutely loved Zigaia's first album, "Beneathe The Veil", so when I discovered their second album, I was thrilled to get it. The music is hypnotic, the vocals are sensual, the the beat makes you want to dance. It's perfect for bellydancers, but even if you don't own a coin belt, you can't help but move your hips to the drums. It's an amazing blend of seductive energy that truly celebrates the goddess in us all.

Check out their other album, too!

5 out of 5 stars Trance While Ya' Dance!!!.......2001-08-01

Both of their albums are great. They are one of my favorite Witchy discoveries!

The music is secuctive and richly sensual. Lush is a good word to describe it!

Allow yourself to become a Dancer of Twilight!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous, Earthy, and Heavenly.......2001-07-17

With the common thread of love songs to the soul, this collection of global, world beat sounds acknowledges every level and every chakra in unabashed celebration. Sensuous, earthy, and heavenly, in a breathtaking mood of wonder and awe, these love-based pieces resonate deeply through body and mind, kissing the soul with un apologetic affection. I was surprised at the wide range of moods. Rich with bass tones and interwoven percussion alongside astounding vocals, this album will find a variety of uses, from wooing a potential mate to comfort in times of distress to energetic housecleaning. It conveys a feeling of knowing the listener to a depth that can be disconcerting, and is sure to be popular with both young and - well, those not quite so young.

4 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and Seductive.......2001-02-26

Dancers of Twilight is definitely a "keeper" CD. Recently, I used several songs (#1 "Ondine" and #5 "Shape Shifter") as a soundtrack while shooting a stupendous storm of wildly dancing snowflakes and glittering ice crystals swirling on the wind currents blasting across the American River Canyon and transformed a winter wonderland home video into a magical moment on film. For this, among many other reasons, I love New Age music passionately because of the sense of creative freedom that it inspires within a person. Especially those moments when the "inner muse" that cannot be denied whispers "create your own reality" as the music lifts your spirit into a seemingly transcendant space where a song, a picture, a poem, a dance flows from one's heart, soul, body, imagination. Michael Breene is a terrifically gifted artist whose work is lush and inventive with his inspired use of percussive instruments and other FX that keep the listener engaged in his musical storyline. I particularly love the smooth synthesizer washes that he uses as a backdrop for the other dazzling effects in his aural palette. In addition to the two listed above, my favorite songs are "Magus" chanted by Jeff McBride, and the deeply moving "Dark Eros" which reaches within the shadow self and urges the physical passions to surrender to the moment.

To this listener, there is but one flaw in this album. It is the over use of singing mantras and seemingly endless whispery voice-overs that bury the magic of the instrumental layering and distract the ear from the subtle nuances as well as the depth of meaning within Breene's music. I would have loved to hear the title song "Dancers of Twilight" as an instrumental-only version. This is, for me, also true of their first release "Beneath the Veil" which is quite gorgeous and trancelike, but again way too much vocal involvement interferred with the majesty of the music itself. In my view, the "less is more" approach to vocal tracks would have enhanced their impact overall, especially when the message is manifestly religious/spiritual in context. At these times a Light touch is more palatable and easier to assimilate. Personally, I would adore listening to a totally instrumental CD by this artist and I hope that in the future he will produce one. One final note of appreciation is for the artist who designed the graphics of both their albums. Wonderful!

This collection of 12 songs by nine female singers from around the globe encompasses musical styles from Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. The emphasis is on soothing organic music, with notable examples including the dreamy vocals of Anglo-Indian singer Sheila Chandra; the surreal "Incantation" by Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo, which is enhanced by electronic sound sculpting; the sensual Peruvian jazz of Susana Baca; and the album's liveliest tune, a Greek dance number by Eleftheria Arvanitaki.

Gifted: Women of the World is seemingly targeted at listeners unfamiliar with these artists, and as a teaser for the performers' other work it offers a good mixture of songs, even if the energy level remains uniform throughout the compilation. A portion of the proceeds from album sales go to WITNESS, a group cofounded by Peter Gabriel that equips human rights advocates with modern technology such as video cameras to further their causes. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Only the human race..........2004-05-15

...could be given such a beautiful planet, populated by such divine creatures as Sheila Chandra, Susheela Raman, Eleftheria Arvanitaki and Estrella Morente from such rich and diverse cultural backrgounds... yet spend all their time trashing the environment and fighting war after pointless war.

This is a wonderful album and a joy to behold. I originally bought it for Sheila's stunnning version of the haunting Tim Buckley song, Song To The Siren, which I also have by This Mortal Coil (Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins on vocals).

Yet having played the album through I was blown away to discover that there were literally no filler tracks. This is a wonderful collection of songs which includes some enchanting pieces by Yungchen Lhamo, which are simply intriguing.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars It'll whet your appetite for more.......2003-11-13

The only singer I was even vaguely familiar with when I ran across this disc was Eleftheria Arvanitaki, who is a truly mind-blowing Greek vocalist, surely one of the most impressive singers ever, male or female. As any Greek nationalist would tell you (rightly in this case!), Arvanitaki is unknown outside Greece only because she sings in Greek. Yet even apart from her, this disc was a total revelation. I've been looking for CDs by some of these artists ever since. I admit I was still most impressed by Arvanitaki ("Bodies and Knives" is an incredible song), but some other gems here are "Cardo o ceniza" ("Thistle or Ashes") by Peruvian jazz singer Susana Baca, Andalusian vocalist Estrella Morente's "Los pastores" (Lorca remembered this song being sung to him by his mother during his childhood), and "Assitan Mama Keita" by the Malian vocalist Baro.

The tracks are alternatively dreamy and up-beat, but tend toward the sedate. I wouldn't call it exactly a "new age" recording, but there's definitely an indefinible ivory-smooth disco feel to Sheila Chandra's "Ever So Lonely", and Yungchen Lhamo's two Tibetan songs will appeal to most latter-day hippies (not me, though...). Something else interesting about this CD is how the language of the lyrics influences the melody of the songs. Arvanitaki's Greek struggles against the grain of the music: long, drawn-out words, electric passion -- basically, "detonation". This is also true of Baca and Morente's songs in Spanish and Susheela Raman's very American-sounding Sanskrit love-hymn (Raman is accompanied by a guitar here, which is a non-Indian instrument). Sheila Chandra, though, singing in English, just FLOATS on top of the music, and Lhamo's music, like her native Tibet, is, well, interesting but pretty challenging.

3 out of 5 stars Soothing tunes from worldwide talent.......2001-10-27

Despite its conception as an all-female project and its marketing tie-in with Cacharel perfume, this album really appealed to me as a caucasian male. Why? Because the songs themselves are just plain beautiful. Standouts include Sheila Chandra's take on "Song to the Siren" (produced by Stephen Hague of New Order and Erasure fame), Estrella Morente's sparse interpretation of a traditional Spanish Christmas song, and Susana Baca's quiet, Celtic harp-tinged "Las Muchachas." There are also some great contributions from Yungchen Lhamo, Susheela Raman (who appeared on JOI's debut) and Assitan Mama Keita (who performed on the "Tama" album). One curious note: on the British version of "Gifted" (available from amazon.co.uk), "Song to the Siren" is performed by Isobel Cooper (aka Izzy) rather than by Sheila Chandra. Also, the UK edition features the original version of Chandra's "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean," whereas the U.S. album contains a Stephen Hague remix of the song. Despite contributions from different artists and producers, "Gifted" is a consistent package of very pretty, melodic world music.

4 out of 5 stars Uniformly high quality, but ..........2001-10-18

I like this CD in general: besides presenting excellent selections from artists I already knew (e.g., Susana Baca), it introduced me to several others I didn't, notably Eleftheria Arvanitaki. Her passionate "Bodies and Knives" features several musicians who have recorded with Omar Faruk Tekbilek, and I thought it was the highlight of the CD; "Sappho" is also lovely, if quieter. I also greatly enjoyed "Los Pastores," a jazz-flavored rendition of a traditional carol, and Susheela Raman's piquantly flavored contribution. Sheila Chandra's two selections are well representative of her work, but I don't particularly like her and would rather have heard another selection from someone else. And I loathe the two Yungchen Lhamo tracks: she has a lovely voice, and her two previous albums kept it in the forefront; here, it's obscured by (I felt) rather obnoxious electronics that try to convert the traditional lyrics into trance dance -- bah, humbug!! All in all, this is a high-quality album, but it definitely has warts.

5 out of 5 stars A stirring collection of female vocalists.......2001-08-15

"Gifted: Women of the World" is the much delayed compilation of female vocalists on the Real World label. Happily, the wait was well worth it. Featuring new material from Sheila Chandra and Yungchen Lhamo (two Real World artists), and excellent contributions from Susana Baca, Susheela Raman, and others, this album is an excellent, well-balanced trip through both world, and women's, music.

Sheila Chandra, known for her esoteric, complex works, delivers the opening track. This suprisingly pop-focused homage is a remake of a earlier Tim Buckley song. The beat and instrumentation is beautiful, pure pop, with Chandra's gorgeous vocal tones gliding through wonderfully imaged music. Her other contribution is actually a well-executed remix of "Ever So Lonely." The remix gives the piece an electronica-edge that blends seemlessly with the original piece.

Yunghchen Lhamo from Tibet turns in two wonderful produced pieces. Sam Mills, the genius production behind "Real Sugar" and "Tama", gives a nicely modern, pop/electronic backdrop to two beautiful traditional Tibetan pieces. Lhamo's hypnotic singing is complimented by Mills's production, and some excellent percussion and shakuhaci flute brought in by Joji Hiroto ("The Gate"). The meeting of minds produces wonderfully traditional, but modernly accessible tracks.

Susana Baca is her usual radiant self, with contribution of two slow, seductive pieces. Her beautiful, languid voice, and South American percussion and guitar backdrops, produce the exquisite textures of musical strip-tease that stays on the very edge of proprietary. Eleftheria Arvanitaki (Greece) produces a similar dramatic effect in her "Sappho," a dark and meditative piece. Her rich, breathy voice plays within light guitar and percussion as she relates a tale of lost life and love.

This is the first album of its kind from Real World. In its selection, and production, it rivals the work of Putumayo, who fundamentally revolutionized the focus on world female artists. For the world music afficiando, a lover of women's voices, and person with deep emotion wells, this album is the opening to a beautiful, seductive, and emotionally dynamic landscape.

4 out of 5 stars World fusion sound.......2007-07-17

The best song in this album by far is Rahda Ramana. There is something about it that reminds me of the gobi desert.

    4 out of 5 stars I just love it.......2003-03-20

This new Tulku is amazing ! So different then lots of thing on the market.
The perfect mixture of groove and relaxation.
It takes you in a very exotic world.perfect for dancing or even meditate ......
    It's worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tulku Yet.......2003-03-20

Ihave followed all of the previous Tulku releases and as always
"Universe to Come" is full of surprises. The collarorations with
Jai Uttal and Krishna Das are fabulous,as on the first album. The
"tribal" elements with ayahuasca singers remains a constant thread
of the trilogy. The new contributions of Gina Sala and Consuelo Luz
are very strong. There is a good reason why Tulku is the only group
to be featured on all four of the highly acclaimed "Buddha Bar" releases. This is the best Tulku yet.

3 out of 5 stars This album sounds too much like a rehash.......2002-06-12

I loved Trancendence and was happy to see a new CD by Tulku. Having listened to it three times now, I have to admit it's just a bit dull, with the exception of a couple of cuts. It sounds like a revamp of Trancendence, but without the imagination.

Recorded at the 1997 and 1998 Fes Festivals of World Sacred Music in Fes, Morrocco, Hamdulillah (an Arabic word meaning "Praise be to Allah") captures the unique ancient musics of Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, and Hindustanis. Performed by renowned musicians and vocalists, primarily from the Middle East and North Africa, this extraordinary two-CD set radiates spiritual praise and bristles with musical virtuosity. Javanese gamelan, Jewish Sephardic, a bit of Christian, and various branches of Sufi devotional music--even the obsure muqam from Azerbaijan--are spotlighted.

The velvety voice of Amina Alaoui singing Spanish-rooted Andalusian Gharnati music greets the listener before they are guided over the craggy peaks of vigorous ensemble pieces (Taqtouqa Al Jabalyya and Begonia Olavide) and into the valleys of meditative vocal offerings (Alin Qassimov and Albert Bouhadanna), before resting at the stream of lovely, tinkling gamelan music. Singer Monajat Yulcheva's track particularly stands out for her pure tones and vocal mastery: she raises song from the well of her throat and sends it soaring to the desert sky. And if Yulcheva's expert fluttering doesn't do it for you, the 39-minute piece from the Whirling Dervishes of Konya will. Beginning with sparsely accompanied vocals, this 26-man ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers take their time in building from slow, warm chant to a portentous, wavering march before finally sparking into a throbbing ecstastic fire. Hamdulillah (in addition to being the bargain-priced CD of the year) may be 1998's most unique recording yet. --Karen Karleski

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent variety.......1999-01-05

This collection represents some of the finest in Islamic music, from the Rif mountains to southeast Asia. The Gamelan selection and the finale from the Whirling Dervishes of Konya alone are worth the price of the set.

5 out of 5 stars The world-music CD of the year........1998-11-29

Highlights: The Ensemble Sidi Thami Mdaghri, which contributes a wild, high-energy jam--if you like the Orchestre National de Barbes, check this out. Also, try Amina Alaoui and Francoise Atlan, two singers with beautiful, flexible voices and loads of imagination. A must-buy.
