true to the style, but mediocre recording.......2007-03-21

Spending some time in Jawa myself, I would say that this is definitely authentic Javanese music. The problem is that the selection is scattered and lacked focus. Some pieces were engaging, and some contained a lot of empty space that seemed like a lot of wasted track time. I'm sure the performers were skilled, but because of the nature of the recording, the sound quality didn't do them justice. Sometimes I got the feeling a person recorded this on a cheap tape recorder.

The music is authentic, and often good, but I would say that I've heard better quality Cds of gamelang. Then again, this music is best enjoyed live anyway.

Bombastic Bamboo!.......2001-09-24

This music is played on a bamboo gamelan - instruments constructed of semi-circular sections of bamboo. They look a bit like a xylophone.
The style is generally fast (banyunas) style, with interlocking melodies, prominent drumming, and using a "gong" which consists of a long pipe which is blown - digeridoo style.
There is a peshinden (female singer) and male chorus, with many shouts and interjections of encouragement!
Its a fast ride of lively folk tunes, which is completely different to the traditional Javanese court pieces.
