killer blues album! caught me off guard! .......2007-01-29

Well I would know nothing of this man if it were not for the Saturday blues show in my town. they played a few cuts off of this, and I just had to buy it. Not only is Frankie one great singer, but the BASS player drives this cd like no blues cd i have ever heard.

Read my other reviews, I am so picky, I slam so much, for so much is lame. THIS is a stunning cd, every and I mean every song is good, how many times can you say that? Not just killer playing but all songs are good. I promise you will not be bummed off this. NO way

Janiva's best so far.......2005-10-01

I don't need 75+ words to say this is the best CD by a female blues singer I've heard in a long,long time. Whether she won a Handy Award or not, she deserves at least one, and soon!

Red Hot Smokin' Blues!.......2004-09-25

I've seen Janiva many times live, sometimes in small clubs and sometimes at Blues Festivals and she ALWAYS puts on a fantastic performance. If there is a better female blues belter out there I haven't heard her. This cd is a departure from her previous ones as this is a more stripped down sound. Her voice has never been better and I think this may be my favorite cd of hers. If you want to hear what a real blues singer sounds like buy any or all of her CDs and you won't be disappointed. Also, if you ever get an opportunity to catch a live show you'll be glad you did. By the way my favorite reviewer on Amazon is Avalondon, please send me an email.

John channels Johnson.......2005-03-24

This CD is so good, so raw and real, and so much in the spirit of Robert Johnson that Eric Clapton should be ashamed for thinking he could do better. You can practically taste the dust being kicked up while Johnson (er. .. Hammond) stands at the Crossroads waiting for an appointment to sell his soul to the Big Red Guy. It's not derivative. It's a heartfelt and down to the bone interpretation. Get this CD if you want to see Hammond channel the soul of Robert Johnson

A nice counterpoint to Clapton's mannered renderings... .......2005-03-05

John Hammond - underrated, largely unknown outside of blues circles, and saddled with being the son of an historically important producer - here presents his attempts at the Johnson catalogue over the years.

It's far more impressive than Eric Clapton's latest Johnson offering, largely because Hammond doesn't approach the material with kid gloves. His 'Travelling Riverside Blues' is uptempo and engaging; his 'Crossroad Blues' suitably raw (with the nice addition of a funky slide lick in the turnaround); 'Hellhound on my Trail' is atmospheric without wandering into Vincent Price territory; and '32-20 Blues' energetic and interesting.

There are a few drawbacks, however. Hammond's voice is a weak link - his falsetto, exhibited on a live cut of 'Me and the Devil Blues' - is particularly grating, yet he doesn't try to Xerox Johnson's vocals in the manner of Clapton. His singing is largely his own, and that's admirable even if it is not to everyone's tastes.

The final tracks are mid-1960s electric versions of Johnson's songs, and they are underwhelming. Still, they give one an insight into how Johnson's material was approached by white musicians before he became the overnight sensation (60 years in the making) of the 1980s and 1990s.

As an insight into Johnson, this album is therefore hit-and-miss. As an insight into the historical development of John Hammond in 'reading' Johnson, it is excellent. His commitment to Robert Johnson (and the blues more generally), irrespective of trends and commercial success, is therefore well documented on 'At The Crossroads'. Seek this one out.

Re-cycled from old albums.......2003-10-24

Of course John Hammond can play and sing acoustic blues like few others but the problem here is that this album is anotheer recycling of old material. 99% acoustic in the spirit of Rober Johnson but nothing new. Not Wicked Grin. I would recommend Wicked Grin , Ready for Love, Long As I have You or "Southern Fried" first.

Voice of Klezmer: the Violin.......2003-01-10

In the hands of Alicia Svigals: the violin sings, weeps, laughs, cries, and otherwise mimics the human voice ... Alicia has shown the klezmer fiddle to be of equal value to the clarinet in this genre. The Jewish tunes are haunting, lively, energetic and beautiful! She has mastered her instrument & uses multiple playing styles and techniques: a virtuoso. Although klezmer is *most* often dominated by the sounds of the clarinet: there is no playing "second fiddle here"!!! She is a "primas" or "first fiddler" in every sense of the words!!! :-) Other instruments which are the 'supporting cast' to the violin: are the tsimbl (cimbalom), accordion, occasionally a second fiddle, a bass, and drums. Most of the music is traditional & orginates from Romania, the Ukrainian, Turkey, Greece, Moldavia, & Bessarabia (former Soviet Union). There is a tremendous composition that Alicia herself created for a musical play: it fits all the criteria for great klezmer. Most of the tracks are her interpretations of originals from 78 records of the 1920s - 1950s. Some tracks are wedding music, others are of Hassidic origin, others are music for the Sabbath. There are bulgars, doinas, horas, freylekhs, a zmiro (hymn), a hora batuta and a hybrid "bulgarish-frelekh". The liner notes state the Greeks adapted the last one into a hassapiko. The liner notes are very extensive and helpful. They explain technical details related to the typical musical scales used in klezmer: the "Ahavo Rabo" and Ukrainian scales. The latter resembles the music of the Aegean coast from Greece & Turkey, going all the way up the Balkan peninsula to the Ukraine. This is very special cultural music that allows for a wide range of improvisational capability by the right musician: Alicia Svigals has proven to be among the best! This CD is magnificent! Excellent music.......2000-03-19

I love this CD. The music is very enchanting. Several songs have an intriguing simple syncopated rhythm, and others have a nice plucked background rhythm from a stringed instrument. Pieces range from very _normal_ klezmer, to interesting new melodies, even one or two that are reminiscent of Celtic melodies.

The audio samples here can sound a bit squeeky, but on a real audio system, Svigal's violin has surprising voice. Similar to Giora Fiedman's clarinet.

Brilliant, Sweet, Masterful.......1998-10-12

This is one of my favorite CDs. I listen to it almost every day, and my seven week old son loves it, too!

Alicia Svigals, who plays fidl with The Klezmatics, has created an amazing solo album. It ranges across the landscape of human emotions with stunning musicality and sensitivity. Some of the tunes are her arrangements of the traditional, and some are original. All are stunning. I think Alicia has led the revival of the fidl as a 20th, and 21st, century klezmer lead instrument, taking its rightful place again alongside the clarinet.
