Informed by a vintage Hollywood production sheen and flashback-fueled, identity-questioning melodramatics worthy of Hitchcock, Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar's sexually-charged film was quickly hailed as a mature masterpiece. The film's classic Hollywood conceits are deep-rooted, and Iberian composer Alberto Iglesias reinforces the film's often retro mood via a brooding, classically oriented score with an ear towards history. It may briefly excerpt Rossini's "Kyrie" to haunting effect, but the touchstone here is the Bernard Herrmann of Hitchcock's prime, with an emphasis on their epochal Vertigo and especially the tense, dark strings of Psycho (which "Escena Familiar" and "Cine Olimpo" echo with haunting grace). But while Iglesias capably evokes the color and spirit of those iconic touchstones, he crucially does it without sacrificing his own identity. Evocations of Spanish culture come mostly via vintage performances of "Quiza, Quiza, Quiza," "Cuoro Matta" and others, but on the expansive "Puerta Finale" the composer skillfully interweaves his Herrmann influences with touches of mournful jazz, flamenco and "Kyrie"'s choral echoes, creating a compelling, oft chilling post-modern new whole. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the film.......2004-11-21

Alberto Iglesias did it again, a wonderful soundtrack!

His last collaboration with Pedro Almodovar, "Talk to her", is one of the best scores I've heard in recent years. In that movie, the scenes of the country villa, accompanying with the touching song of "Cucurrucucu Paloma" by Caetano Veloso, easily became one of the most beautiful five minuets I ever had in a theatre.

Before I went to see "Bad education", I can't help wondering, Could I have another enjoyable moment like "Cucurrucucu Paloma"? Luckily, I did have one, sort of. The Spanish rendition of "Moon River" is such a beautiful and haunting piece. But unluckily, the way the music delivered in the film is so disturbing. It started as a beautiful and innocent singing by a boy standing by the river while ended up with an innuendo of the ugly fact of sexual violations. However, if you didn't see the movie, the "moon river" will be a pure pleasant enjoyment.

Compared to the slightly weak movie, the music itself is powerful and flawless. From the beginning to the end, it doesn't have a single dull moment. In a word, buy this awesome CD!

5 out of 5 stars The Starving Crocodiles... .......2004-11-17

The Starving Crocodiles

Almodovar's latest movie is undoubtedly his best, and a very inventive film-noir that absorbs and electrifies you from the very beginning. Alberto Iglesias' score serves "as a cradle where the movie rests" as the auteur himself said.

La Mala Educacion (Bad Education) is one of -if not- the best soundtrack composed this year, and its style is absolutely magnificent. Following the film-noir trend, Iglesias' score is a mixture of tunes a la Herrman ("Juan y el Sr. Berenguer", "Por mi grandisima culpa", "Escena Familiar"), poignant waltzes ("Foulard en seda", "La Carta", "Valsetto"), and vocalized cues that reflect the theme of the movie, and illustrate it fittingly ("Kyrie", "La piscina", "El cine como espejo"). "Cine Olympo", an exquisite theme for the movie-within-the-movie manifests itself disguisedly many times, in variations, as Iglesias' has done in previous scores where a parallel story is narrated - The Flower of my Secret, Live Flesh, Talk to Her, and All About my Mother- however the best track in the score is the "Overture". Other superb tracks are "Carta del mas alla", "Plato", and "Adagietto"... melodies that crave lust, but "Puerta Final" -the MAIN theme- is absolutely grand; probably the best potpourri of songs written in the last decade, that will grab you by the horns from the moment it opens to the last saxophone refrain, in an orgasm of eight minutes that you will want to experience over and over again.

The soundtrack also consists of key songs that in one way or another relate to the main characters and the story: "Maniqui Parisien", "Cuore Matto", "Moon River" (a very avant-garde arrangement), and "Jardinero".

Alberto Iglesias has composed a score so dark, rich, hunting, powerful, and mysterious... that proves to be irresistible.

Experience the Bad Education!!!

5 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE VENETIAN NEW YEAR'S EVE.......2007-03-05

I'm in love with Venice, I like history and lord Byron and I adore Leyla Gencer, that's true. And yet, even if you don't appreciate too much early Verdi's operas and you are not particularly fond of historic tragedies, you should buy this item.
"The Two Foscari" is based upon real tragic episod from Venetian history - in 1457 the doge Francesco Foscari before being deposed lost his son Jacopo who was exiled for ever from Venice and died soon after it on the way to Crete. Lord Byron wrote a historic tragedy and young Verdi an excellent opera with truly inspired music from the beginning to the end. Even if Verdi himself underestimated his work considering it "un mortorio" ( a funeral ), I think it's one of those forgotten operas which definitely deserves to be still performed.
On New Year's Eve 1957 in Venice Gian Giacomo Guelfi found the role of his life. From his first words "Eccomi solo alfine.." to the deeply moving final aria "Questa dunque e l'iniqua mercede" he simply IS Francesco Foscary face to face with his tragic destiny. Leyla Gencer was ideal choice for Lucrezia Contarini: her outbursts of fury as for example "La clemenza ? ...s'aggiunge lo scherno!" already announce the future Lady Macbeth and Paccini's Saffo and her hauntingly-sweeet pianissimi are as always to die for. Mirto Picchi was never not one of the best tenors on Earth but in 1957 he was definitely very decent Jacopo Foscari.

Strange choice of music for New Year's Eve perhaps, but very venetian. I'm sure this performance is still part of the memories of La Fenice.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Performance Marred Only By The Bad Acoustics.......2004-09-19

This live recording of Verdi's La Traviata is marred by its terrible sound and bad acoustics. Such problems are to be expected of live recordings. Nevertheless, there is greater quality of sound in Beverly Sill's studio recording of Traviata, which she sung opposite tenor Nicolai Gedda available on the EMI record label. There are two versions, one as a compact disc album and the other as compact disc within a book featuring illustrations, the libretto and background on the composer and cast of singers available on the Black Dog Opera Series. This live recording was an attempt to capture Beverly Sill's debut in Naples, January 17, 1970, at the San Carlo opera house. What people probably don't know about Beverly Sills is she sung Traviata more than any other soprano ever did. At one time, Beverly Sills sang the role more than 30 times in a course of a month or two, and that in the US alone. She performed Violetta at the Metropolitan Opera, at the Wolf Trap Festival (a production which was filmed live and is available on DVD and VHS) Violetta was a role which carried with it many dramatic opportunities for Sills. Beverly Sills sang the role with passion, conviction and even a spirituality. She IS a thoroughly believable Violetta. At first, in Act 1 as a festive Paris socialite, bubbly, warm and displaying stratospheric coloratura as in the Brindisi and closing Sempre Libera aria. In her duet with Germont in Act 2 she becomes noble, self-sacrificing and compassionate - "Ditte A La Giovine" "Morro La Mia Memoria" still very much in despair that she is forced to leave Alfredo knowing she will ultimately die. Her Death Scene in the final act is very moving and poignant. Sills' feathery light voice is perfect for the role of a frail, dying woman who can't be vigorous in action nor in voice. Why do so many dramatic, big voices sing the role of a dying young girl ? The role is better suited for such lyric voices as Roberta Peters, Lily Pons, Anna Moffo and most recently Renee Fleming. The lighter voices produce the more realistic effect for Violetta. Yet the more popular Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Victoria De Los Angeles, and recently Angela Gheorghiu and Anna Netrebko have all sung Violettas with extremely heavy voices with success. I don't understand why. Callas is superfluously dramatic and pretentious in the role, Sutherland sings only to sound beautiful instead of convincing, and both Caballe and De Los Angeles were not credible as girls dying of tubercolosis when they were both large, chubby women- the very thing that did not sit well with the premiere in early 1850's when Fanny Salvini sang the role which sent the audience laughing because they could not believe such a plump, healthy woman was dying. This is why Beverly Sills, with her sweet, lyric voice, passionate in all the right places is the perfect soprano for the role of Violetta without all the theatrics most sopranos have done before. I have always thought that Beverly Sills is particularily mesmerizing in the finale to Act 2 when she rises after fainting and sings "Alfredo, Alfredo, In Questo Core Non Poui Comprendere Tutto L'Amore Tu Non Conosce Que Fino Prezzo Del Tuo Desprezzo Provato L'o Ma Vera El Tempo En Que Saprai" "Alfredo, In This Heart You Don't Understand How Much I love you, At the price of your hate I have tested it. But The Day Will Come When You Will Know....and the chorus, Alfredo, Germont join in.

This recording has really bad sound. There's no getting away from it. But if you are a fan of Beverly Sills and want to contain a memento of her debut in Naples then this is the recording to get. If that is the case, it is a recording that has personal value to the fan.

              1 out of 5 stars An abomination.......2004-05-21

The sound is the worst, Sills screeches her lungs out. She had no voice for Verdi, this Violetta sounds like a common street-girl instead of a dying courtesan. Shame on her!

              5 out of 5 stars Great Traviata!!.......2002-11-07

I must admit that this Traviata remebered mer a lot to the Callas, di Stefano Traviata, becouse Of the terrible sound. You can hardly hear the female voices, but I`m going to judge this cd in terms of interpretation and not of sound.
I found out that this Traviata is Wonderful. Kraus really great in "0 mio rimorso" and all the opera. Alway in perfect voice and a wonderful interpretation of Alfredo.
Sills became my favorite Violetta after Callas. Great Coloraturas in the first act and drama in the second and third. Wonderful the duet with Germont intepretated by Zanasi. Not The best Germont but without doubts very concentrated in his role.
The direction is perfect I loved all the tempos.
Forgeting the bad sound this is a Traviata that should be remembered as one of the bests of all.

3 out of 5 stars Love Beverly Sills, but a bad recording.......2001-07-16

I still remember the night I first heard Beverly Sills sing La Traviata at Wolf Trap in 1977. I saw this recording and nostalgia prompted me to buy it. Her voice is as I remeber it, but the recording doesn't do her justice. The microphone placement is bad. It seems like the orchestra overposers her and at the applause, there is a really loud set of hands that seem to be right under the mic and it gets annoying.
