Product Description
The musical virtuoso is back with his best album yet; Standing Ovation shows Richie has risen to the occasion and is making social commentary about realities of life, this is reflected in tracks such as "Cut It Off" and "Jungle" (featuring Hanour). The consummate romantic and irresistible lover-boy, Richie has "Can't Tek Mi Girl", "Standing Ovation", "Quiet Storm" and "Take Me Away" in his arsenal of Lovers Rock, defying anyone to challenge his lyrical genius and passionate appeal. "Life Without Music" and "Where Is The Love" (featuring Cocoa Tea are a tribute to the value of music and its necessity as part of life. "Fire Tonight" featuring General Degree is a Latin influenced track which adds flavor and diversity to this album. "Gone Too Soon" is Richie's tribute to Dennis where he uniquely uses a medley of Dennis's song to honour him. "Mama's Blessing" shows Richie's adoration of his mother and their special mother and son relationship, here his mother Carmen joins him on this track; a fitting climax to this remarkable compilation of well-produced authentic reggae tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Gladys and the pips at their best.......2007-05-31

Miss Gladys Knight And The Pips were hitting their stride when these two albums were released in 1971. "If I Were Your Woman" had the title track and "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" as the released singles and it showed a deep and truly soulful side of the Lady and the tight and supportive and unobtrusive side of the pips. The other cuts on the album consist of very good covers and original tunes. As for "Standing Ovation" with "Make Me The Woman You Go Home To" and the Kris Kristofferson cover of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" this was a strong albumas a follow up to the latter. The southern roots and the gospel intensity that the group grew up with are all eveident here and makes this album coupled with the former worth every penny to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gladys...Here She Is Again!.......2007-04-12

It's about time Gladys' motown music was released. The "If I Was Your Woman", is a GREAT album. Songs like the title track, One Step Away (my personal favorite), Feelin' Alright, One Less Bell to Answer, Signed Gladys down to Sly Stone's Everybody is a Star, with the Pips each singing a lead line was fabulous. I also love the song, "Here I Am Again". Too bad Berry Gordy didn't properly promote this masterpiece. On the Standing Ovation album, it's ok, but I love the song "No One Can Love You More...They are jamming. Overall, If you love Gladys, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars In Glorious Full Bloom.......2004-05-22

Originally released as Soul LP 736 in December 1971, this album heralded Gladys Knight, once and for all, as a singer for discerning adult listeners. Never again would any pretense to adolescence be affected. From this album forward, I was never indifferent at the news that Gladys Knight & the Pips had a new release.

The album led off with the group's then current single "Make Me The Woman You Go Home To," a sterling performance. Nowadays, though, the lyrics might raise an eyebrow as Gladys `bargains' to keep the man she wants: `with a smile I'll fix you're evening meals/ iron your clothes - it ain't no big deal.' She also promises not to ask questions while her man stays out all hours and she doesn't know where he is. Yes, that's taking some big chances, but if love's never made a fool of you, there's a good chance you've never really been in love. "Master of My Mind," here, is from the same emotional territory.

Oh, Gladys can still let an abusive lover have it right back, and there's some proof of that here too in "If You're Gonna Leave Just Leave," and especially "It Takes A While Lot Of Man For A Woman Like Me." Fed up, and with clever Smokey Robinson lyrics to fuel her fury, Gladys tells her failing lover: `Need someone who can see/ what I'm trying to be/ But you don't appreciate it/ and I don't like where I'm situated/ Never knowing what changes you're gonna go through/ And I don't need no KID who's as old as you!'

There are nice takes on outside material like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," a superb and effecting read of James Taylor's "Fire And Rain," and the gentlemen Pips singing some lead parts on The Beatles' "The Long And Winding Road."

This album's crown jewel, however, was Gladys's take on the Sammi Smith country hit, "Help Me Make It Through The Night" written by Kris Kristofferson. There was no better proof that the group was never going back to teenage material after this. Fittingly, Gladys is all alone for this starkly orchestrated dissertation of loneliness, and I still think it's in the top five emotional performances of her life. Anyone who heard this in the early months of 1972 couldn't have been surprised at how majestically she re-interpreted `The Way We Were' three years later. If you're broken-hearted and need to feel sad for yourself, this performance, and maybe a few shots of something 80-proof are all you need.

There's a considerably longer list of accomplishments that Motown records can be proud of compared to any list of mistakes. But high on that shorter list is the fact that this group's concerns about the attention and promotion they got were not addressed adequately. Tired of feeling ignored, and with one more album after this one, they left for a contract with Buddha records. And we all know the glory that came then.

This is the first time this classic album has been issued on CD anywhere in the world. Herbie Mann's group was one of the high points of the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival. This out-of-print LP also includes Mann's 'Mushi Mushi' from an earlier date. The flutist's group at this time included Chick Corea, Dave Pike, Earl May and Ben Tucker sits in on bass. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great material- poor quality.......2007-07-18

I had this on LP years ago, so I remember it well. A great selection from Herbie Mann. Unfortunately, the quality of the cd is poor- the sound is sort of muddy, like a third-hand homemade tape. Too bad, because it really distracts from the cd. I have bought other cds from Amazon, which were remasters of older selections (such as Miles Davis) and was satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars THE MANN WE LOVE.......2004-12-14

The critical fortunes of Herbie Mann have risen and fallen over the years since his first release. Some believe he was a hack and a sell-out. Others believe Herbie Mann was a godsend in that he kept his foot in the popular arena always drawing newcomers to jazz. You could always count on members of one "party" arguing the opposite case just a few years later. What can never be denied is that through his long career Mann was always touring and recording. Naturally, such a long recording career is going to have at least a few stinkers-and Mann's discography is several pages long according to one source.

To some degree, Mann fell victim to the fabled "Playboy Magazine" curse in that wild enthusiasm Mann received for PUSH PUSH around 1970-1971 signaled to the jazz tastemakers that Mann was to be avoided at all cost. After all, if such a pseudo-sophisticated periodical liked him then his value to jazz must be close to nil. Still, Mann continued performing and recording almost to end-with dozens of jazz greats coming together before he died to make an excellent "live" tribute album.

Who knew that the flute could be such an effective instrument? The flute is not such a "grand" instrument as the saxophone or the trumpet by most accounts; but Mann could play the hell out of it. If you ever sincerely wondered what at that fuss was all about, take a listen to STANDING OVATION AT NEWPORT.

Mind you, Mann already had a long list of recordings to his name by the time this album came along. But this record really swings and has a lot of heart. There is nary a wasted moment or note here and you can feel the love of the audience for Mann drip out of your speakers. By all means, get this CD before it disappears into history. You'll be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Standing Ovation at Newport.......2001-11-16

Standing Ovation at Newport is one of Mann's best albums. I was at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival and it was phenomenal. All the greats were there and all had exceptional sessions. Herbie Mann took the stage to a crowd that was already 10 feet off the ground and expectant. The energy was electric. When Mann began to play every one could tell this would be like none other. His performance of Coming Home Baby was unbelievable. It was the first time that he used the technique of overblowing on this number which made the crowd wild. Mann caught up in this excitement turned in a performance of a lifetime. All of this can be felt in this very special album. Interestingly enough in a later interview Mann would admit that the overblowing occured because he was tired but because the crowd responded in such a positive way (we all went a little crazy) he continued throughout the whole number. Things like this only happen in a live setting. This is a must have album for Herbie Mann fans and non fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz's Best Mann Wails At Newport.......2000-08-09

From the standpoint of a devout Herbie Mann fan, I can honestly tell you that this is by far one of his best achievments. The energy created on the famous "Comin' Home Baby" is unlike anything I've ever heard. On this album he proves that great jazz can swing and be as infectious as any music that grooves. If you're looking for high energy, very listenable jazz, this recording is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good Live CD.......2000-06-20

If you enjoyed Mann's "Live at the Village Gate", this would be an excellent choice. As with most jazz musicians, his brilliance shows with a live performance.

4 out of 5 stars Move over, Wolfagang Amadeus!.......2007-07-28

This may be just about the earliest example of the Sicilian wunderkind's work available to American consumers (who have the patience and/or connections with the Godfather). If he's not up to Bird and Phil Woods yet (he was 13 at the time of the recording), I would be surprised if either of the two Americans sounded as good at this age. On the other hand, no doubt Francesco would have either were it not for predecessors.

There are nine tunes--two done as medleys--for a total of seven performances. They're all showstoppers without trying to be. In other words, the kid impresses when he sounds like he's not trying to. Instead he's listening to his own constructions and the pianist's suggestions, incorporating them seredipitously into his solos. The understanding of song structure, tradition, phrasing, idioms and styles are all there, and the kid swings, even when the responsibility of generating it is largely upon him alone.

It's not clear why d'Andrea is his only accompanist. Ira Gitler's liner notes observe that American's Rodney Whitaker and Herlin Riley were so captivated from off-stage that they insisted on sitting in for "Footprints." Unfortunately, contractual conflicts prevented using this track on the disc. d'Andrea plays tastefully but somewhat stiffly, not attempting to provide much support in the way of bass lines, but it's sufficient that he provides the young prodigy with a springboard. The pianist's solos are boppish, but stiffer and more academic, veering off toward Lennie Tristano rather than following his protege into Birdland.

Cafiso's sound is already close to Phil Woods'--clear and clean, rich and full-throated. He's quick to insert song quotes from American tunes and Bird licks. I am noticing, however, some of the same hesitation, or deliberation, that tempted him to "display" his upper register on a later recording. He needs to stop listening to his sound, especially in that fat register that must be difficult for any true-blooded Italian bel canto--at Milan or eslewhere--to lay off of. As good as his interpretation of "My One and Only Love" is, it would be better if he could resist the temptation to overplay--no need to throw in the alternate tonguings, cute articulations, and exaggerated wobble of some of the American tough tenors. Also, after presenting an extended unaccompanied introduction to the song, the featured performer's repetition of the device in the cadenza seems overly generous.

He looks, if anything, less than his 13 years, though not necessarily diffident. Not only does his playing warrant such confidence, but no doubt a certain amount of cockiness is essential for a 13-year-old to appear before a huge audience such as this and make it all sound as easy as practicing in the basement. I'm sure there's someone in Sicily who could arrange to fly in an all-star American rhythm section--maybe some American-Italian aces like Pizzarrelli, Patticucci, and Louis Bellson (or Roy Haynes, if the latter is from Northern Italy).

Recieving applause and cheers from live audiences, singers are usually vocally superior when performing in live venues. This recording of Jerry Vale at Carnegie Hall is no exception. Every song is perfection with some extraordinary vocal challenges that Vale conquers with ease. The 1st time I heard "I Feel A Song Comin On", I was pleasantly surprised within the 1st few seconds of the song, to learn that what I was hearing was Jerry Vale's voice instead of what I THOUGHT was an orchestra horn holding a long note! Jerry's version of "I Left My Hear In San Francisco" is just as good if not better than Tony Bennett's. The whole show is excellent, with Vale being in prime goosebump-giving voice. The only drawback is you can tell the concert was edited. According to Jerry Vale himself during a recent radio interview, he stated that they left out several songs and audience interactions. If Columbia and the powers that be would re-release this in it's full unedited version, it would be perfect. And, where's the rest of Jerry Vale's live performances? He did Carnegie Hall again in 1994, not to mention hundreds of other live performances.

A real lady of jazz, Ms. Bazzle is a singer of standards who never resorts to distortions or tricks to make them "new". She is true to the music and the lyric, making them her own with a clear, cool voice. She is the real deal.
