Since the success of the Buena Vista Social Club project and its various spinoffs, the world-music market has been curious about all things Cuban. But judging from this amateurish collection--a sequel to Global Disc's Rhythm & Smoke compilation--not everyone in Cuba who picks a guitar and croons a ballad or a bolero is ready for the world. The Japanese and American producers auditioned singers from all over the island before settling on the 15 who appear here. To put it bluntly, if this is the best they could find, they either needed to offer more money or keep looking. Some, such as the duo Cachibache, simply can't carry a tune well enough to justify a recording. Others, such as the a cappella sextet Ele Te, are more talented but lack originality. The uniformly thin and flat sound mix doesn't help at all. --Rick Mitchell

One of my favorite CDs!.......2005-03-16

This is my first review and I was moved to write because I was surprised by the negative editorial review of this CD. This CD is of my favorites. I love the rhythm, the voices, and the romance of this music, even though I barely understand the language. I have played this CD over and over and never seem to grow tired of listening to it. Give it a try!

Finally I have found "Songs from the Heart".......2004-10-14

My mother has been looking for this album for quite a long time. And I am so happy that I have found it,because now I have a nice affordable gift to give her for Ramadan.

This album is very nice, my favorite song is "Estoy Enamorado" which means "I am in love" and is sung by a married couple from Cuba. I would recommend this album:)

I Bought this CD for Dancing. Realized it was a gem later.......2003-03-09

Don't listen to the bigoted editorial about this CD. Yes some of the tracks are not exceptional but many are. Every one is excellent for dancing. And yes there is nothing really new, but if you dig deep enough absolutely nothing has been new for the last 50 years except some nearly unlistenable electronica.

The music has a certain heart that I really liked

A Slice of Cuban Heaven!!.......2003-01-25

I think the editor who reviewed this must have been listening to a different disc, because this one takes you straight to heaven. All the songs here mesh like clouds floating slowly across the afternoon sky, but if I had to pick just two, I'd take Tony Perez's haunting "Solo de Piano" and Cubamar's lilting "Linda Tu," which has me singing along for days after I hear it. I also love the English and Spanish lyrics included, as they give you some great insight into how this wonderful music was made. The title of this collection is apt, as all these songs go straight to the heart, which is what all the best music does.

Romantica de Cuba.......2002-09-18

This is a beautiful album and should not be compared to the Buena Vista Social Club. Having lived in Mexico and Latin America I am a huge fan of many different musical styles, and this album stands on its own merits. I thought the production values were good and I loved the phrasing and lyrics of the songs. The songs Escombros y Ruinas, Estoy en Amorado, and Danza were gorgeous. These songs truly came from the hearts of the performers.
