Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
pure genius.......2007-05-21
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection
Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15
The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.
first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12
the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.
Encore.......2007-03-31
Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.
The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29
I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

This enchanting, flavorful CD finds the ever curious Yo-Yo Ma traveling to South America, and Brazil in particular. The music varies from classical to samba to bossa nova; the combinations range from guitar, flute, and cello to female voice (the remarkable Rosa Passos), cello, guitar, percussion, piano, and bass; to simple cello and piano; to cello and two guitars. The overriding element is rhythm; each selection has a beat which is both infectious and sensual, but the contexts are splendidly varied. "Dansa brasileira" has a Debussy-like, impressionistic flavor, "Dansa negra" is sultry with an easy melody, "1 x 0" is a dance scored for guitar, percussion, and cello with a solo clarinet riff. It's impossible to get bored or tired listening to this creative CD; it's unique--just like Yo-Yo Ma himself--and endlessly surprising. It may not be quite what we'd call "classical" music, but it is many kinds of music, and they all will delight. The other musicians are as impressive on their instruments as Ma is with his cello, and that's saying a great deal. --Robert Levine

it's arrived. international shipping it's very slow, but, it's arrived, very well. I'd like very much. TANKS
Obrigado Brazil.......2006-03-11
The tempos and sensuality of Brazilian music meshed with the artistry and joyous soul of Yo Yo Ma: a recipe for pleasure. I first listened to this on my car CD player and found myself wanting to pull over and get out and dance. The depth of Ma's cello adds just the right counterpoint to the rhythms and buoyancy of the samba and bossa nova. Enjoy!
Takes My Breath Away.......2006-02-11
This Disc is merely further proof of what the world already knows. Yo Yo Ma was in fact born to play the Cello, it is simply fantastic. It is a must own for me, It feels the air around you with such wonderful tones. Although some classical snobs might complain that this is nothing more than a pseudo Classical album, who cares. They should find the nearest emergency room and have someone remove the poles from thier *sses. No apologizes are needed hear, this disc is all that it needs to be, which is absolutely magnificient.......
Peace:

Obrigado Brazil.......2005-09-08
The CD was received however, it can't be played because something
is wrong with it..it screeches and pops and won't play. But its open so I can't return it. Very disappointed.
A little Dull.......2005-01-24
I had the luck to see Yo Yo Ma live in concert, it was so fantastic, I went out and bought this album. But the joys of a live concert sometimes don't make it over to the album, which
sounded dull, it makes good back ground noise but it doesn't hold your attention.

Customer Reviews:
great performances of enjoyable pieces.......2006-03-11
David Russell is arguably the finest classical guitarist in the world, along with Manuel Barrueco and Paul Galbraith, and a few others. I have almost all Russell's CDs, and I enjoy them tremendously. Aire Latino is a collection of many of the best and most popular modern short pieces from Latin composers. Hearing his interpretation and flawless execution has rekindled my love for many of those pieces I once also played. Highly recommended!
It should have been earlier........2006-01-10
I mean the prize, of course. It's no doubt that David Russell is the best(not one of) when referring to 19th century(or style) music on classical guitar. In this album, every small piece is so attractive because of the romantic aspect in guitar, in
David. I own all the albums of David Russell. Although this one is not the best,it definitely deserve the prize, price and praize from guitar lovers from all over the world.
Thoughtful, Sensitive, and Skillful.......2005-08-08
This is a great performance for the very versatile David Russell. His playing is thoughtful and expressive, but also sensitive and not overly extraverted. His use of rubato is excellent on most tracks, and his constant contrast of dynamics, as well as vibrato, give the pieces on this album real life and emotion.
I had been performing 5 of the tracks on this album when it came out, so I can attest to the difficulty of many of these pieces, especially all three movements of the Morel "Sonatina." I can also say that his performances of these is very true; I could hear no incorrect notes , with the exception of some added notes in the first movement of "Sonatina," which I have since adopted myself for my own performance. His expressive interpretation is likewise impeccable on these tracks.
This record would be a great purchase for anyone interested in classical guitar, whether they are just getting into the genre or already have a large collection, or anyone interested in Latin American art music.
Transcendent Pleasure.......2005-04-26
Perfect! One will very rarely discover an album as finely constructed as this. The performer stands at the pinnacle of his profession, one who demonstrates mastery of the instrument and intimate understanding of the music. The selections are interesting, fresh and never boring. There is delight in the listening from beginning to end. Mr. Russell is quite simply astonishing as he unerringly takes the listener on a journey of unalloyed beauty. This is a disc you will relish again and again. If you love the guitar, you must have it.
A Wonderful CD!.......2005-02-17
A wonderful, beautiful CD. The fact that the music is all inter-related creates a beautiful atmosphere while listening. I know enough to know that this type of artistic endeavor is a collaboration; so kudos to David Russell, producer Rosalind Ilett and engineer Thomas Knab! I understand that this team has worked on many of David Russell's amazing recordings.

Quite average.......2007-06-27
It's not a bad quality CD but the music is variable and different. Even though I like most types of music, I think the composition is just average.
A world rhapsody.......2006-12-28
This is suberbly enhanced performance CD that captures Yo-Yo Ma and friends at their musical heights. The accompanying musicians, the Assasds, Paquito you-know-who, Kathyrn Stott and others add beautiful textures to the compositions of Piazzolla and Jobim to create a Latin influenced classical painting. This is music to play, go about your business at home and enjoy the different influences coming together. The sadness and happiness blend to reveal the emotions of life. Favorite songs include D'Rivera's "Afro" that sneaks up on you like breaking dawn to reveal the sunshine and life anew. Also Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" is a frenzied Yo-Yo Ma performance with suttle breaks on cello giving way to the Assadd's beautiful quite work on guitars to spike and peak your interest numerous times. This is good background music but it grabs your attention and makes you listen carefully so it can turn on you and be very demanding. Good for those quite times of work or reading.
All that a performance can be........2006-02-11
Keep in mind that The studio version of this performance is nothing short of brilliant. The material includes pieces from the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. Then you come to discover that there is a live concert version (and Dvd) of the disc. There is nothing like having your cake and your ice cream in the same bowl. Well that is what the release of this disc is, Cake and Ice cream with the cherry on the top.
Peace:
The*Hot*Wax*Kid
Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05
I bought the disk after hearing about the colaboration on NPR. The songs and performances are impecable, the variety is satisfying and fun. My only complaint is that the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired. Several times the recording level is not balanced between the instruments so that when listening to YoYo Ma playing, when joined by the saxaphone, it comes in too loud and ruins the mood.
I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.
a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22
Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America.
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.
Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.
This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

Evocative and highly original........2005-12-16
This is an infectious album: it may go over your head on the first listen, but oh! how it will grow on you, until it is on endless repeat in your head for the week (or month). A collection of moody instrumental compositions informed by diverse musical influences, 'Obrigado Saudade' is a dreamy, atmospheric aural meandering that evokes, variously, film soundtracks and architecture on grey days and whatever else the often haunting melodies conjure in your mind.
Frequently filed under 'electronica,' a genre I'm not a great fan of, Mice Parade resists categorization. As another reviewer noted, a Brazilian thread does seem to run consistently through this album -- especially pronounced on "And Still It Sits in Front of You," one of the few tracks featuring vocals (imagine Seu Jorge crooning underwater). This album is not for everyone; its charms are subtle and the repetition of certain musical signatures may irk some listeners. It's completely won me over, however: a compelling and highly original work, I can't stop listening to it.
Nice mellow Brazilian-flavored organic electronica.......2004-08-07
This is the kind of "organic" electronica (using samples of real instruments) that fans of Manitoba, Four Tet, and Boards of Canada might enjoy. It has a generally mellow vibe and a Brazilian flavor, and some occasional, unobtrusive vocals. It doesn't reach out and grab you, but it does grow on you after a while. I am mainly reviewing it because there are no other good reviews on this page, so please accept my apologies for not going into more detail.
Pass It Around.......2004-03-25
I'd never heard of "Mice Pardade" until recently, and I've been missing out. This is the first album of theirs I grabbed and it's a gem.

Customer Reviews:
Why did he re-record the same Barrios pieces?.......2007-02-24
This is definitely an excellent CD, but why did John Williams simply re-record most of the same Barrios compositions as he did on his 1977 Masterworks recording? Barrios wrote hundreds of wonderful pieces for the guitar, and more of these need to be brought to light.
If you want to hear the ultimate Barrios recording available, you must get Barrios' own recordings on the German Chantarelle label, a 3-CD set. On the first 2 discs, Barrios himself plays 40 of his own works! The recording quality varies, though, and is never HiFi. The recordings from the 1910's are poor quality, the early to mid 20's ones are a bit better (acoustical). But the mid to late 20's (electrical) recordings are quite good. Barrios' music and playing are so good that all these recordings (to my ears) transcend the sound quality and are well worth listening to, not just as a historical document, but as a wonderful musical experience! There are 4 recordings done on a home recorder in 1942 whose sound quality is so poor, they are absolutely unlistenable (at least at the beginning of one of these pieces, you get to hear the great man speak!). On the 3rd disc, Barrios plays works by others (Beethoven, Bach, Tarrega, Sor, Schumann, and others). The disc to get!
Breathtaking Stuff!.......2007-02-02
I have both Russell and Williams and I won't help you by pointing to one or the other as being superior. Williams seems a little more direct which for some tunes (especially those featuring tambora technique, such as cueca) is great: his tambora is excellent, and Russell's is actually rather weak.
In particular, Barrios is such a brilliant writer, and even if you have Russell's recording, you simply must own this one as well, in order that you hear William's masterful performance of Cueca, as well as Maxixa and Aconquija which are not present on Russell's disc. Unfortunately you still have to get Russell's recording too, though, for his different take on certain songs (excellent vibe on the tremolo numbers and excellent flow on faster ones), but in particular for the Danza Paraguaya numbers Russell plays that are not featured here: very lively, gorgeous tunes that really have a certain bounce to them. I love guitar but am a harsh critic of songs that just don't fill the space very well and/or feature the same old tired patterns we've heard a million times before, and Barrios' Danza Paraguaya (especially the 2nd two) are very original pieces of music that very fresh, very lively, that bring you in and don't let you away! But I digress. The moral is: both Russell and Williams perform this stuff brilliantly and owning BOTH is very much worth the price paid.
Amazing.......2006-07-15
I am a learned musician in other areas but am new to the world of classical guitar. Williams plays these pieces wonderfuly. The first time I heard these recordings I was amazed by the technical and expresiveness of the recordings. You need to buy this CD. And by the way everything I just said was an understatement. No seriously, it's that good!!
Justice done by Williams.......2006-06-11
Best ever postume tribute for "mangore" simply magistral. Thank you Mr Williams. Justice is been done. Rest in peace Don Agustin.
A very well interpreted set..........2005-09-03
John Williams's Barrios album has stolen my heart. It is obvious that there was a lot of heart and artistry that went into this recording. He plays the music absolutely brilliantly. These tracks can be used as textbook examples of how the music should sound and be interpreted. Williams is a very lyrical player with stunning technique. Pieces like the two Valses and Las Abejas show of his wonderful technical skills and the Mazurka Appasionata and Una limosna por el Amor de Dios show how Williams can take a lyrical piece and make it sound like the most beautiful thing you'll ever hear. Some pieces stand out more than others, but this album is an essential for any classical guitarist or lover of Late Romantic Latin American classical music.

It is unusual to make a soundtrack for a series of books, but music--particularly music for guitar and mandolin--is everywhere in the novels of Louis de Bernières. On this CD, guitarist Craig Ogden and mandolinist Alison Stephens play music that the characters in the books either play or discuss. The pieces that relate to Corelli's Mandolin include a version of Vivaldi's Concerto in C, arranged for guitar and mandolin, and an excerpt from Hummel's Concerto for Mandolin in G Major. The most interesting pieces are by Calace, Persichini, and Palumbo, three composers who wrote for the mandolin in the late 19th century. Classical mandolin was extremely popular during that period, until it was eclipsed by the guitar in the 1920s. Composers such as these wrote beautiful music that was forgotten when the public's taste in instruments changed. The South American trilogy is represented by solo guitar pieces by composers like Villa-Lobos, Barrios, Llobet, and Lauro. The only mandolin-guitar duet in this section is the charming arrangement of a folk tune called "Mis Dolencias." Ogden and Stephens are both fine musicians and they do an excellent job in playing this delightful music. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Captain Corelli comes to life!.......2000-04-12
An essential companion to "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". Hearing the music on this CD really brought parts of the story to life for me, and I feel confident that anyone who enjoyed the book will derive pleasure from this disc. Hear the polka with which Corelli impresses Pelagia and the concerto he plays to Dr Iannis (after irritating him by insisting on tapping out the orchestral introduction, played here on the guitar). All of the music is taken from or inpired by the novels of Louis de Bernieres, but it would be wrong to think that this is an album only for literary fanatics - there is a tremendous range of styles, and the listener's attention is held throughout on purely musical grounds. As someone who had never heard solo mandolin music before I was pleasantly surprised by the dynamic and tonal range the instrument produced. Alison Stephens gives a virtuoso performance of relatively unknown music which deserves a much wider audience. There is also classical guitar music (sensitively played by Craig Stephens), most with a Latin American feel, and some very succesful arrangements for guitar and mandolin (the Hummel and Vivaldi concertos), as well as some more familiar tunes. The beautiful short pieces by Perichini, Calace and Palumbo (all recorded for the first time here) are particularly worth hearing. This is a CD I have returned to over and over again, and I would recommend it unhesitatingly
