5 out of 5 stars Luminescence par Anggun.......2007-05-07

Monsieur D.

5 out of 5 stars Anggun outdid herself this time.......2007-01-30

Always known for her gorgeous looks and sultry smoky voice, Anggun arrived on the scene as an Exotic breath of fresh air. With Luminescence, she puts aside her foreign "Asian-appeal" and proves that she can transcend all barriers and genres. "Etre Une Femme" was a urban-flavored surprise and captured Anggun garnering an entirely new fan-base while staying true to her strong vocals and amazing R&B runs. "Cesse La Pluie" burst out as the memorable next single with it's beautiful piano arrangement and crunchy guitar riffs. Althroughout the album we find Anggun reaching a new zenith as the writing becomes more poetic and lyrical, the hooks are tighter and her voice is more polished and confident. The already superior album (Almost every song could be a single) was re-released in mid 2006 and offers new remixes and bonus tracks not included in the original version. "Garde Moi" a duet with David Halliday is a haunting and exquisite rock ballad, while "Juste Avant Toi" was a lighter yet no less melancholy triumph that ruled the summer of 06'. The remixed songs are excellent as well : Captivite is mashed-up with "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd, "Etre Une Femme" is remixed to sound like something from out of Lata Mangeshkar's repetoire, and there are two techno mixes of the other two singles. This was truly one of the best French albums (or any album for that matter regardless of language) I have ever heard, and as Anggun's star ascends ever higher we are left to wonder what she could possibly do to top Luminescence.

5 out of 5 stars Better impossible.......2007-05-23

Anggun finally reaches her perfect path with her album Luminiscence after playing around with different rythms like electropop (Chrysallis) and New Age (Snow on the Sahara). Luminiscence is the purest expression of what Anggun is and what she is made of: passion and tenderness. This album is definitely her best work ever. The most amazing tracks are the vibrant "Saviour" and hip-hop-ish "In your mind" which contains Arab sounds. "Human" makes you go back to the 70's while "Cover" made me cry several times reminding me of my homeland. There's no doubt that this album was conceived to seal Anggun's career with a golden mark, and she absolutely did it again.
But she also goes back in time to the beginnings of her career when she used to be a rock star with songs like "Devil in my Mind","Painted" and "Captivity". On the other hand, she makes us long for the lost love with songs like "Surrender" and "Breathe in Water",a powerful ballad which is perhaps the best song of the entire album.
If you're a fan of Anggun, you must have this album, if you're not, you'll become one after listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Her best Album So Far - Lyrics and Music.......2007-03-13

Again, she made another beautiful album. But this one, shows her maturity in making songs. 'Breath in water' captured my attention ... she sang beautifully, and the rest are great songs and music. Looking forward to her next album!

5 out of 5 stars beautifully haunting.......2007-03-09

As always, her voice is beautifully haunting. Her transition from French to English is unbelievably smooth, even if there is not a word for word translation. I know almost no French, but both versions of her albums are a must for any Anggun fan. Luminescence (French or English) are her best to date.

4 out of 5 stars Her Best So Far.......2006-12-04

In terms of organization, visualization, and execution, there can be no doubt that this is Anggun's best album thus far. That applies to both the English and French versions. One important factor about this effort is that it is also the best produced of her albums; one can sense that a variety of factors (not the least of which being the fact that she is simply older and wiser) are responsible for the greater focus.

At the end of the day it is still about the songs. This record has a fine mix of compositions: there's the dancefloor dominator ("In Your Mind"/"Juste être une femme,") the French influenced pop/rock ("Evil And Angel"/"Je suis libre") that just enough avoids sounding too much like the ubiquitous Jean-Jacques Goldman, heartfelt spiritual love songs ("Surrender"/"Sur les cendres") and my personal favorites, the rock/pop songs ("Painted," "Devil in My Mind," and "Human"). I like it when Anggun rocks out; she has a unique sassy capacity to sing with (and of) rebellion while still sounding classy and...well...French.

Anggun's voice, her strongest attribute, is also excellent here. Kudos to the production team for making sure this happened. Her lyrics, both in English and French, are also better, tighter, and in many cases profound and personal. "Surrender" is a truly captivating and moving song of love and spiritual release.

Overall a top-notch and professionally executed effort that pays attention to detail and makes sure that Anggun comes off looking as good as she deserves.

Hint, Hint....South by Southwest awaits....!

3 out of 5 stars A Different Look For Anggun.......2006-11-06

I first got hooked on Anggun when I listened to her 'Secret of the Sea' on her album 'Snow on the Sahara'. I didn't even know who she was. But her voice was strong and unique and her lyrics were just beautiful. I purchased her CD and absolutely fell in love with it. It was peaceful and earthy yet profound...for me atleast. 'Luminescence' is...a bit different. It's a bit edgier and has a pop feel to it. The opening 'In Your Mind' is a nice song to dance to. I like the beat. My second favorite is 'Evil & Angel'. Love the guitar, love the lyrics. She's showing versatility, which is indicative of one's level of talent. I get the sense that she's still experimenting, and the product of that is great. I firmly believe Anggun will continue to demonstrate her innate talent, and thus there will be no hesitation on my part to spend my green on her future releases.

Intelligent, poetic, exploratory, non-violent, avant-garde music. Closer to (but not much like) Roscoe Mitchell as opposed to Peter Brotzmann. Daniel Carter is beginning to get some long-overdue recognition as one of the true geniuses of american music. Find interviews with him and read them. He is a true Renaissance Man.

        Daniel Carter/Rueben Radding - Luminescence

Among free jazz musicians in the New York area there is one figure that seems to command universal respect, almost bordering on awe and that is Daniel Carter. Since the early 70s, Carter has been a fixture of the downtown New York scene, first making his name in the lofts of Soho and Tribeca, then collaborating with almost any musician you can name, from the giants of the first generation of avant gardists, to the hardcore punks like Yo La Tengo. And now, at 57, he is manically active, working with the established and the unknown and mesmerizing a new generation of musicians with his playing and with his legendary monologues at CBGBs.

This recording, made with bass master Rueben Radding, shows why Daniel Carter's mystique is so great. I'm not sure that I can name any CD of the past 10 years in which the spirituality of the playing is as deep and the sound is as luminous. This CD's genesis is in a small grant that Radding received when he was living in Seattle. The grant allowed Radding to bring Carter out for a series of concerts and recordings, which also include a marvelous trio album, Language, with Radding and Seattle drummer Gregg Keplinger. (Since Amazon doesn't carry this album, a review is pending on my blog.) Unfortunately, airline restrictions after 9/11 were such that Daniel could only bring one instrument, instead of his usual bevy of winds. Choosing just the alto, though, I think is part of the magic of this CD. This is the sweetest I've ever heard Carter, and perhaps the most spiritual work of his career...that's saying a lot.

The album is completely improvised, with some studio and some live cuts. Radding's bass is gorgeous. He produces a thick, dark sound with a rich body and fullness, and his bow work is terrific. Over top, Carter is deeply soulful. This is avant-garde for those who are afraid of skronk. Though Carter does experiment with sound in the avant-garde tradition, he is lyrical and gentle with it. There is a haunting quality in the tone that is unusual in the New York avant-garde. At times, you almost think that you are listening to Paul Desmond or early Jimmy Guiffre. However, Carter's music has more spiritual power than either of those altoists and a sadder edge.

In the liner notes by Radding, he quotes his wife as saying, "(Daniel) makes you want to be a better person." I couldn't put it better myself. There is something in the playing that speaks directly to the heart...that induces what a medieval mystic might call compunction or metanoia. Many times listening to this album I feel an almost physical longing in my heart, something that only usually happens to me in rare moments during meditation. This is music from somewhere else, not from the confines of this sphere. I know that every time I hear Daniel live, and every time I put on this recording, it does something to me...speaking to me about the beauty that is in this world and could be the whole of this world...but isn't. What a rare and blessed gift from a musician.

This album is beyond praise. It is the best jazz album I've heard this year...or this century for that matter.

        5 out of 5 stars I love avant-garde jazz . . ........2003-07-23

. . . and this disc perfectly shows why. From the standpoint of shear sonic variety, it's unlikely that any other music genre can top jazz. And avant-garde jazz leads the way in diversity of sound palettes.

But that's only part of it. Something weird often happens in free jazz: Glimpses of unlikely and even startling beauty flash through. Take Luminescence, a duo effort by tenor sax player Daniel Carter and acoustic bassist Rueben Radding. The former played wonderfully on William Parker's remarkable Thirsty Ear trio disc, Painter's Spring, adding a very attractive stabilizing melodicism to the outré pair of Parker and Hamid Drake. I've never heard Radding before, but if this outing is any indication, he is one of the premier bassists on the scene. His brilliant arco playing bespeaks classical training, but he goes way beyond the usual with all kinds of extended techniques. His pizzicato playing recalls Charlie Haden, especially with his uncanny timing and note placement.

The record itself, aptly named Luminescence, is starkly beautiful, with a strange and glorious light often emerging from the somewhat crepuscular proceedings. Most of the pieces proceed at a leisurely pace (one is tempted to say almost dirge-like), but something magical begins to happen shortly into them: The players' sinuous interaction, often random-seeming at first, begins to take mysterious shape, and an eldritch note-weaving emerges from which come passages of aching loveliness.

Almost sui generis, this astounding disc should not be missed by anyone who favors such performers as Joelle Leandre, Daniel Patumi, John Wolf Brennan, and John Butcher.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh pop album and mesmerizing voice.......2005-06-09

Anggun had a hit a couple a years ago with `La neige au Sahara', I also remembered her for `La rose des vents' and her participation to a DJ electro-jazz project 2 years ago. I was therefore surprise to hear from her after so long with `Etre une femme', first single taken from this new album. I must say it ended up a nice surprise as this album is one of my favourite French albums of 2005 so far.
`Etre une femme' (two versions on the album, the solo/single/radio version and another one featuring rapper Diam's) will remind you of Truth Hurts `Addictive': it mixes oriental vibes with r'n'b rhythm. The lyrics is about being feminine without being misunderstood by men, it is a sort of declaration of independence. The result is rather catchy and will get you to shake those hips, but does not reflect the rest of the album.
There are a couple of beautiful ballads on the album. `C'est écrit'/`Painted' is a power ballad about how love can be written in the stars, written by Anggun in English and adapted by Lionel Florence in French. `Nous avions des ailes' is a breathy ballad, full of tenderness and very dreamy, a little bit melancholic maybe, one of my favourite tracks. `Un de toi' is an almost acoustic ballad about 2 becoming 3, how a couple turns into family. `Sur les cendres' is a grand ballad, with lyrical flight of strings - a true romantic number. `D'où l'on vient' is maybe more an album filler, even is the chorus gets you singing along.
`L'improbable cours des choses' is maybe my absolute favourite. The lyrics are signed Anggun and the music Tété, a folk singer nominated to Victoires de la Musique 2004. It has a cool rhythm that get you snapping fingers - think Jack Johnson.
Then Anggun unleashed the electric guitars on a couple of numbers: `Captivité'/ `Captivity', `Devil in my mind', `Human' (the intro sounding a little bit funky, a la Lenny Kravitz, gets me crazy), `Cesse la pluie' (announced as second single), all of them bringing a great upbeat, rocky feel to the album. I always get a little wild when playing those in my car.
I really enjoyed the album as a whole, and I really got into Anggun raspy and very distinctive voice. Just a good French pop album!

5 out of 5 stars the great voice from Asia is back.......2005-04-04

Anggun, the Indonesian-born French singer, is best known for her first single "Snow on the Sahara", but she consistently proves she sings more than world music or ethnic touch sounds--her voice has a lived-in grace (in indonesian, her full name means grace born out of dreams!) that you don't hear from a lot of competitive french divas. Her third french album celebrates Anggun's freedom with a powerful voice, classic-minded variant on her pop rock and ballads.

With its oriental touch, "Etre une femme" (being a woman, or "In your mind" for the future english title) puts a dance groove in this album,
and the funkier "Human" reminds the rock&roll era.

With "Nous avion des ailes" and "Cesse la pluie" provide future hits, Anggun is more remarkable for its cristal-clear voice.
