A recording of the band's finest hour...........................2006-08-15
With the long-awaited return of Dino Valente to the band as singer and songwriter, Quicksilver Messenger Service marked perhaps its finest hour during the recording of this particular album. Unfortunately, Mr. Valente had been absent during the recording of the band's previous two studio albums, "Quicksilver Messenger Service" and "Shady Grove", and during the band's live concert recording, namely, the album, "Happy Trails." Problems with the law and a failed attempt to make it happen musically in New York City alone and also with QMS colleague, guitarist Gary Duncan, drew him away from the band for an extended period of time. The added absence of Gary Duncan prompted the rest of the band to ask Nicky Hopkins to join them during the recording of their second studio album. Nicky Hopkins was one of rock history's preeminent pianists, having had contributed his talent to many memorable albums by top artists, ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Who. There is no exception here, with Quicksilver Messenger Service, as evident on this particular album, and on the previous studio album, especially on the song entitled, "Edward, the Mad Shirt Grinder."
The band at this stage of its history also included a gifted guitarist by the name of John Cipollina whose style was quite unique--John Cipollina oftentimes used the tremolo bar on his solid-body Gibson while playing solos and also while playing as a counterpoint to the guitar work of fellow band member, Gary Duncan. A wonderful aspect of the band at this particular point in time was the fact that two of its members were capable of playing "true" lead guitar at any one time. Unfortunately, shortly after the recording of this album, John Cipollina left the band. He eventually formed the band, Copperhead.
Quicksilver Just for Love.......2006-02-24
I grew up in the Bay Area in the late sixties so I became very familiar with the "San Francisco" bands of that time and I seemed to enjoy many of the bands that never had "tremendous success". Quicksilver falls into that category and I have to admit they were among many of the groups of that area and time that had to be experienced live to know what they were really like and to see them at their best. That's not to say that I don't like their studio material because I do. This album was a new direction for Quicksilver with Dino Valenti returning after doing some time for a drug bust. While this may not be their strongest album I would have to say it's worth buying for the song "Fresh Air" which became a sort of an anthem of that time. This album and the one that followed "What About Me" are essential to any Quicksilver fan that is serious about what this band was about and wants to experience the magic of the music of that time and place. Some other bands worth looking into to get the flavor of that era: Moby Grape, Cold Blood, It's a Beautiful Day, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Malo, Hot Tuna, Tower of Power, The Youngbloods, Blue Cheer, The Blues Image, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Country Joe and the Fish. They just don't make 'em like that anymore sorry to say.
Lost Gems.......2004-12-15
Certainly QMS represented the best of "Jam Rock" with their style of 2 guitar, point and counterpoint method of playing.Whether intentional or not they touched the very essence of classical music structure and connotation, which resulted in a musical conversation rather than merely a song. They gave a great effort on this album and it was well engineered
Best of the original Albums by QMS.......2004-09-06
I think this was the best QMS Albumb that was ever released. This Album had profound influnce upon my life when it was originally released and it is still one of my favorite Cd's to play. The guitar playing was profoundly original and creative for it's time, and so was the piano. Nicky Hopkins went on to play with the Rolling Stones.. I would say it has with stood the test of time too, still sounding unique, and undated... Quicksliver had some later Albums that had some pretty good suff on them, but none of the later work seemed to hold unity as well as this album did. There were a lot of bands putting out concept albums, at that time, where it wasn't just a culmanation of songs, but the whole Album was to be listened to at one sitting...That's what this Album is and was, I don't see that idea playing out as well in any other Quicksilver Album. May the memory of these great artists, who lived like there was no tomorrow live on...

Tubes' Swan Song?.......2007-05-03
Much as I love Completion Backwards and Outside Inside, this is the one Tubes CD I find myself coming back to again and again so many years later. "Piece by Piece" might be my favorite of all of their songs and "For a Song" and "Feel It" are both right up there. It's really too bad the band collapsed after this (Genius of America is a pale, inferior, sub-variant of this amazing band) and that the album never really got its due. As others have said here, this really is one of the buried treasures of its time period.
THE BOMB!.......2007-02-23
I've seen The Tubes 10 or so times in concert; both before and since Love Bomb. Always a great show and incredible music, but seeing Love Bomb performed in it's entirety at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD was the best! The entire album flows at genius level, and with so many other great Tubes albums and songs that preceded it, calling Love Bomb 'the best' is quite an accolade. This would have to be one of my five must have albums if I ever end up alone on that desert island...
TUBES + RUNDGREN = AMAZINGLY ENTERTAINING.......2006-12-14
How I wish they were still making recordings to this standard today. This recording is so much fun. One reviewer stated Tubes did not tour this record; not true. I saw Tubes perform the whole thing on stage in Columbus, Ohio shortly after it was released. They even did the entire "Night People" medley, uninterrupted, note-for-note perfectly like the record (Prairie Prince had about four large fans on him as the medley goes on for about 25 minutes and he plays through the entire thing). I was just a kid then, but I remember the group made no secret about the fact that Capitol Records had abandoned them on this one, and Tubes actually had to wheel out a large video screen to show a promo film for the record. How sad. Anyway, excellent songwriting, excellent performances, Todd weaves his way through the songs and is creditied for co-writing several, and a very creative effort, sadly overlooked. Don't let that mistake rob you of the experience.
Feel It--Yes You Can.......2006-10-26
I am a big admirer of the Tubes and of producer Todd Rundgren. I love the sound on this album and, yes, the feel of it. "Feel It" is, IMHO, the best Tubes song ever recorded--and that's saying a lot. Throughout the album, some very creative and moving beats, moody guitars and especially moving vocals by Spooner, Waybill (and Rundgren?). Maybe this album is under-appreciated compared to other work at the time, and in the Tubes discography. I think it is worth it's (high) price for "Feel It" alone, and I like to listen to "side two" lots with friends. I don't think there is a bad song on this record. If you like the record, try "The Hermit of Mink Hollow" by Todd Rundgren.
Thank God for small favors..........2006-06-22
Thank you BGO for correcting your blunder from the first pressing of this disc!! You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I just read the reviews below and most are favorable for this album. This is a lost masterpiece for the band and it's sad that it got the axe the way it did when it originally came out. I don't really know what the one reviewer is going on about the lack of Fee Waybill vocals. Heck, he's on all the tracks, brother, can't you hear him? And as far as Todd Rundgren being a no-talent hack, I don't really know what to say about that. Todd has produced tons of great records over the years and this is definitely one of my top ten of his producer efforts. Forgive me for being biased, but the man can do little wrong in my book. Prairie Prince using a Fairlight?
C'mon... those are the best drum sounds I've heard on a Tubes album!! Get your facts straight people....
Buy the CD and enjoy it! I know I have...

Customer Reviews:
Classic Tom Rush Previously Unavailable!.......2002-09-24
It is an indication both of Tom Rush's enduring appeal as well as of the dearth of comparable contemporary artists that explains the resurgence of these two albums. Some of my favorite Rush classics which were otherwise not available on the CD format are included here, including "Seems The Songs", "Mother Earth", and of course, "Wind On The Water". Given the fact that Rush has never been a terribly prolific songwriter, the fact that these three efforts are now available is something to get excited about.
Most of the songs included here are quite good, and most of the cuts from the "Merrimack County" album are exceptionally good to listen to again. It evokes a sense of the times in which it was recorded, a time when the counterculture was in full bloom, and the typical album addressed itself to a variety of poignant and relevant themes. This is among Tom's most earthy and straightforward efforts.
The "Ladies Love Outlaws" album, on the other hand, plays more deliberately into the quest the Columbia record label was making to make him their next big star, a la james Taylor. They consciously tried to use Rush's "bad boy" image in playing up songs like the title cut, "Maggie", and "Claim On Me" to try to cast Rush as a kind of high-powered folkie heart-throb. It didn't work. Rush was not a hit-machine like James Taylor, and couldn't keep up with the twists and turns the studio types tried to impose to make him a more bankable recording artist. Yet the songs remain for us to enjoy, especially efforts like "Hobo's mandolin", "Desperadoes Waiting For A train", and "Black Magic Gun".
All in all, this is a neat collection that makes some of Tom Rush's otherwise unavailable material accessible again, and I am excited to now have all of these songs at my CD fingertips. Enjoy!
Lovely Re-release of Two Of Tom's Finest '70s Albums!.......2002-09-21
Silly me! Months ago I happened to mention my own frustration concerning the lack of availability of a couple of Tom Rush's early albums on the Columbia label, namely, his "Merrimack County" and "Ladies Love Outlaws' albums, both of which were recorded in the early 1970s. Recently I discovered while surfing on the Tom Rush web site that the two albums in question have now been reissued in a British release covering both efforts in one CD. I am about to order it, but couldn't resist letting you know about it as well.
Some of my favorite Tom Rush recording are here, with "Ladies Love Outlaws", Hobo's mandolin", and "Claim On Me" being among the best on the original "ladies Love Outlaws release. The version of his famous "No Regrets" is not the same as the more famous version which he had a big hit with, and more up-tempo and rock elements than in the original presentation. I also like "Desperadoes Waiting For A Train", "Maggie", and "Black Magic Gun".
Also included from the Merrimack County album is "Kids These Days", Mother Earth", Merrimack County II , and "Jamaica Say You Will", but my favorites here are both "Wind On The Water" and "Seems The Songs. Rush was in terrific form at this point, and his singing and acoustic guitar work on this album was the among the best he ever did, at least in my opinion. Tom's recording career was about to go downhill from this point on, at least for a decade or so, but the songs on these two albums were an indication that his lack of sales was not due to either lack of good material or terrific performances of the material, all of which are very well arranged and orchestrated. This is a lovely re-release and one I am sure you will come to appreciate as much as I do. Enjoy!
ITS GREAT TO HAVE VINTAGE TR ON CD.......2001-05-26
THIS IS THE CD I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. TO ALL NEW LISTENERS OF TOM RUSH, THIS IS SOME OF HIS BEST STUFF. TOM IS A GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC TREASURE.
IT'S GREAT TO HAVE SOME VINTAGE TR ON CD.......2001-05-26
I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TOM'S MUSIC AND THESE TWO RECORDS ARE SOME OF HIS BEST. ANY NEW LISTENERS OUT THERE MUST HEAR THIS ONE. HE IS A GREAT AMERICAN TREASURE AND HIS MUSIC SHOULD LIVE FOREVER!!
You're not going to do any better than this guy!.......2001-05-15
These two records were the last of the four albums Tom Rush made for Columbia (the first two being "Tom Rush" & "Wrong End Of The Rainbow", also available as a two-fer from BGO) in the 70's after a multi-album deal with Elektra during the mid to late 60's. As with his earlier work, Rush primarily interprets in his unique style the songs of up and coming songwriters of the day. "Jamaica, Say You Will" (Jackson Browne), "Hobo's Mandolin" (Michael "The Dutchman" Smith), and "Desperados Waiting For The Train" (Guy Clark) get unique Rush treatments, that for a number of us, was the first exposure to these tunes. Having kept up with Tom over the years, he still draws from these albums when he performs, and with good reason. None of these songs have suffered over the years from the "dated" syndrome. Anyone could go into the studio and cut these songs today and they would sound as fresh as if they were brand new songs...but only Tom Rush could do them justice. Happily, at 60, Tom Rush is still out there, doing justice to his songs ("Merrimac County II" and "No Regrets", the latter a re-interpretation of an older version) as well as the work of others. Tom Rush performed many times at the now-defunct Cellar Door in Washington, DC, and I was there almost every time he came to town. I want to be in the audience for as long as he wants to come and play. Don't just buy this release...get 'em all! The man has never made a bad album!

Music From Other Lifetimes.......2007-07-28
I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.
This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10
To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

BRILLIANT & MAGICAL VOCALS~BRAVO SHIRLEY BASSEY!!!.......2007-07-31
Shirley Bassey reached the peak of her vocal brilliance by the mid-seventies when these two great vocal masterpieces were released already being an International Superstar with sold-out venues around the world giving performances filled with wild standing ovations...this Legendary Diva still possesses that stunning voice and performing presence that is unmatched in the world of entertainment today being back on top of the charts in Europe and hopefully tired America radio will rise to the occasion but we won't hold our breath...
"Nobody Does It Like Me" is classic Bassey in an electic mix of great songs & unique orchestrations filled with stand-out performances such as the deeply emotional and brilliantly sung "I'm Not Anyone" composed by Paul Anka and Miss Bassey wrings every ounce of passion out of this great song with vocal brilliance that is awesome and memorable..."Davy" is a haunting duet with its composer Benard Igher while two motion picture theme songs, "The Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye" and "All That Love Went To Waste" should have had exposure as they are magnificent performances that would have been huge chart hits but somebody dropped the ball...a number of times unfortunately. Another chart hit possibility would have been a wondrous and definitive version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"! Every song in "Nobody Does It Better" makes one a believer that the title is an accurate description of this great singer and this is only 1/2 of the collection!!!
"Love, Life And Feelings" is a true Bassey Masterpiece and the world tour for its release is a truly extraordinary and magical memory for us lucky ones who experienced this timeless legend in concert during this amazing time in her career...each song is a complete experience like a play with a beginning, middle & great ending with every song a standout! Never before has a Neil Sedaka song like "The Hungry Years" been such a riveting listening experience and "Born To Lose" is devastating in a way that nobody but Bassey could bring to the listener. By the time one gets into the since of grief experienced in "Alone Again (Naturally)" or the pathos that fill "Feelings", it is clear this is a true original classic singer who brings it all to the listener. Like any true great artist, Shirley Bassey saves the best for last and "If I Never Sing Another Song" is a haunting and stunning finale that always brings the entire audience out of their seats screaming for MORE!!!!! Don't miss this tremendous collection as these two lp's are two of the greatest vocal masterwork's ever made! Bravo Shirley!!!
Bassey at her very best!.......2007-01-30
This excellent 2CD release from BGO features two Shirley Bassey albums originally released in 1974 and 1976. Both released for the first time on CD!. The first "Nobody Does It Like Me" was recorded in the USA following the popularity of Shirley's previous album and single "Never Never Never". This album was designed to place Shirley in the lucrative US adult contemporary market and results in a different sound to her UK recordings around the same period. Shirley'e voice is at its very best, and the overall production is pulled back somewhat compared with her previous UA albums. Now 30 years later, this album sounds better than ever, and listeners can't help but wonder why it wasn't a bigger success. Standout tracks include "Davy" a duet with the songs composer; Bernard Ighner and Paul Anka's "I'm Not Anyone". The album closes with Shirley's beautiful version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". Next is the album "Love, Life and Feelings" from 1976 which placed Shirley firmly back in the UK charts. This album peaked at number 13 and enjoyed a 5 week run in the charts. There is not a single track on this album that does not deserve 5 stars, but for the record you will find many songs associated with Dame Shirley that (strangely) don't appear on many compilations including, "What I Did For Love", "Born To Lose", "Natali" and "If I Never Sing Another Song". Both albums have been expertly re-mastered by the experts at BGO and have never sounded better!
Review-Nobody Does It Like Me/Love, Life and Feelings.......2007-01-09
Excellent album. Contains most ballads and has everything on it that I was looking for.

Some Of Hag's Best.......2007-08-04
Merle's genius really shines through in these two albums. It's good to see both of them on one CD. (This one is not easy to find. I've had the LPs for quite awhile.) The sound quality seems exceptional to me. Fans of Haggard should buy this right away. If they've never heard it, they WILL love it.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
2 classic Hag albums from 1976.......2003-09-09
In 1976 Merle was nearly at the end of his long association with Capitol Records. "My love affair with trains" featured some great songs. Merle hopped many a boxcar in his youth and those experiences were the stuff of legend. Also included here is the "Roots of my Raising" album which features the hit title track and the Bob Wills favorite "Cherokee Maiden". Merle Haggard is that rare artist who has made every song in nearly every album worth listening to. I highly recommend this one!!

Carmen Jones is one of the weirdest projects to ever hit the American musical theater. In 1943, lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II adapted Georges Bizet's Carmen for Broadway. The music was pretty much left intact, but Hammerstein transferred the action to WWII America. Carmen's tobacco factory became Carmen Jones' parachute factory, bullfighter Escamillo became boxer Husky Miller, and so on. As if this weren't enough, there also was the "small" detail of casting the show only with African-Americans. All in all, this ambitious endeavor makes Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme seem timid. Hammerstein's attempt at writing "black" hasn't aged all that well, but many of the show's songs retain a surprising impact. The feverish intensity of "Beat Out dat Rhythm on a Drum," for instance, hasn't dimmed over the years, and the song's been covered by a wide variety of performers, from Pearl Bailey and Marc Almond to Mandy Patinkin. The track is reprised as a bonus track at the end of the CD in a version sung by Kitty Carlisle (who's rather stiff compared to the show's June Hawkins). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A Contemporary Adaptation of Carmen.......2003-12-02
You may know that the smash grunge musical RENT is based on Puccini's opera LA BOHEME. And MISS SAIGON is MADAME BUTTERFLY, and trickiest of all AIDA is AIDA, but before all of those there was CARMEN JONES.
What makes CARMEN JONES different, however, is that it uses Bizet's original music, though it changes the setting and the lyrics (they're in English, too, rather than the original French). And who would have done such a thing? Oscar Hammerstein II (as in Rodgers & Hammerstein, I know you've heard of them. If not, shame on you, go straight to OKLAHOMA, do not pass go, do not collect CD of CARMEN JONES). This is one of Hammerstein's earlier works, and it's a great show. (There's a very successful movie version available on video, if you want to see it.)
CARMEN JONES updates the story of CARMEN. The original plot took place in Spain in 1820, Carmen was a gypsy. The first performance of CARMEN was in Paris in 1875. (Wow! Over 125 years, and it still plays regularly all over the world, talk about a great run!) What Hammerstein did was akin to what our current composers are doing with shows like RENT. He updated the show for his audience. Instead of Spaniards and gypsies, he used African-American factory workers, and set the story in 1943 during the war in a Southern town.
The story makes this a darker musical than Hammerstein's later shows like OKLAHOMA, CAROUSEL, THE KING AND I and SOUTH PACIFIC, some of which had their heavier elements, but were focused more on the romance. The tone of CARMEN JONES is more akin to his first show (the first musical) SHOWBOAT. It is also unusual not just for it's time but in general that it had an entirely African-American cast. While recent shows like Disney's THE LION KING and ONCE ON THIS ISLAND have also had predominantly African/African-American casts, these shows are few and far between. Another comparable show in terms of music and style would perhaps be Gershwin's PORGY AND BESS, though it's considered an opera rather than a musical.
Now THIS is how CARMEN JONES should sound like!.......2003-02-26
Words cannot begin to sum up my joy that Decca Broadway finally deemed CARMEN JONES fit for a proper remaster. Oscar Hammerstein's lyrics set to Georges Bizet's classic score can now be heard clearly without distortion and this CD includes a complete plot synopsis and pictures. Now we no longer have to settle for that monstroscity from Pearl CD, which was an unauthorized recording, and I hope didn't take away too many sales from Decca Broadway. For musical buffs this CD is a must-have!
