El Primero Conjunto Norteno Famoso 1946-1949

Maya y Cantu were the first major recording artists in the accordion-and-bajo-sexto norteño style that continues to dominate the U.S.-Mexico border region, but their work has never before been collected, and they are all but unknown to modern listeners. This album proves that their popularity in the 1940s was no accident. While Cantu's accordion work is fairly basic, the harmony vocals are wonderful, with the pure, soulful power of the great country duets. The material is a nice mix of classic corridos, ranchera love songs, and a sprightly polka. Reminiscent of the more famous Alegres de Terán, Maya y Cantu deserve the attention of any lover of traditional border song. --Elijah Wald

This Cd of Maya y Cantu: El Primero Conjunto Norteno Famoso 1946-1949. I bought this cd a few months ago. And I am here to tell you that is a great item to own. Growing up as an Mexican-American child, Norteno music was played at our house or other people's houses. Some where from the old days and new up coming bands. Now Norteno music began in the late 1800's or early 1900's in the Mexico or U.S. Borders. And there has always been Conjunto (Bands) at the those times, but there was no one that was played over the radio at times. Maya y Cantu, popular around the Texas-Mexico border. So by 1946, they where winning regional fans. Most of that came from a radio show they use to do every day for one hour. In a radio station XEDF, at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. They recorded some great songs & ballads. Even though their duo group last from 1946-1949, they began a legacy with Norteno music. And now new groups who never knew about Maya Y Cantu, now they can.I want to thank Ideal Records and Arhoolie Production Inc. for taking the time to collect all this info about this group. And a BIG THANK YOU to Amazon.com for putting lost music on this site so people can find and enjoy music from the past.Thank You.
