Product Description
Who is Nemo? He‘s the result of a childhood in Venice (Italy), then a move to Paris, ten years of music school in London and many trips and long journeys all around the world. In his first band at 16 and with a consummate passion for writing Nemo has become a true citizen of the earth. He ‘s a child of "Genre fusion" one can’t label nor file him in any precise type of music. An ounce of Rubadub, a zest of DanceHall, a little bit of P-funk, a drop of R’n’B, a slight taste of HipHop ...sort of a musical Molotov cocktail! A first, a second and a third band...then the harsh reality of French Underground and the will to exist forced him to go to Jamaica in 2000! Working with sound systems, appearing in stage shows, talent shows (JCDC & Suzie Q), making dubplates in studios, radio (Irie FM) and TV (FIWI TV & Reggae Sun), Nemo worked them all. In 2003 Producer Pelican (Ball ‘o’ Fire Music ) gives him his first Jamaican 45 ... then others started to follow , Paul Barclay , Acoustic Vibes...

February 2004 in Kingston , Nemo is singing in the street and Jah Thomas stops him asking to be the one to release the tune he was chatting, he ends up recording an album with the Roots Radics, a life time chance he had never imagined in his wildest dreams, recording with his favorite band!

Nemo has also recorded an original Aggrovators, ‘Stick By Me’, a duet with Beenie Man, and while appearing on a TV talent show (Rooftop Ochie) Ninja Man comes on stage grabs the mike out of his hands to big him up and tell the crowd he had never seen a whitey get 3 forward in a row! Jamaica has not only adopted Nemo, Jamaica has also given him a brand new name at the Easter Fest, Cross-Breed, calling him back 4 times on stage!

You are amongst the first to hear and enjoy Nemo on his debut CD Cross-Breed.

The artists he likes to mention all the time are: Garnett Silk, George Clinton, Prince, Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Snoop, Bowie , Natedog, Bjork, Sly Stone,Tiger, Barrington Levi, Jeff Buckley, Pharcyde, Miss Dynamite, Adriano Celentano, Janis Joplin, les Rita Mitsouko, Oxmo Puccino, Pinchers, Bohannon...

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique voice and vibes...........2007-05-29

Nemo aka Cross Breed has a fine voice, in which there is apparently little space for insincere cliche or emotional pretence.

His voice (although accomplished on lead vocal and harmony) like men like Delroy Wilson, Bim Sherman and Slim Smith before him, has a certain frailty, openness and honest naivety. However,it is specifically that gentle and open quality which makes it such a rare pleasure to experience. In a wider music world dominated by insincere posturing and over derivation, Nemo aka Cross Breed stands apart, just as men like Garnett Silk did.

Nemo aka Cross Breed name checks Hamilton Bohannon and Barrington Levy as influences, and indeed, these influences are clear, but he also has overtones of other vocal stylings. At times his voice has an Rn B edge to it, and by that I mean he sounds like a 1950's Rn B chanter, not following the platitudes and banalities of modern day R n B styles.

There are also hints of classic Treasure Isle / early Studio One vocal styles too. At other times, he sounds similar to the criminally ignored Paul Fox or K.D Levi, two other talented roots vocalists amongst the many who have been overlooked by a music world apparently intent on ignoring all and any reality artists until it becomes "fashionable" to notice them. (Look how long Horace Andy was ignored, only to be picked up on and respected in any wider sense when supported and name checked by the arguably far less talented Massive Attack).

Musically too, this album is a pleasure, relying not on thundering digital bass drums, but delicate snare, hi hat and roto tom structures courtesy of Style and Sly, Mafia and Fluxy. The bass lines too, are thoughtful and fluid as opposed to overpowering. The production values are commendable ; knowing when to increase the pressure, dropping Style's hypnotic snares in and out of the echo chamber, but mostly keeping the tones delicate, light as a feather. Clean and pure, uplifting and fresh.

It is surprising to read this is Cross Breed's first album. He cut his first 45 in Jamaica for Ball Of Fire Crew, and only when Jah Thomas heard him singing in the street purely by chance, did he get his break to record with Sly and Robbie. Rumor has it Jah Thomas passed him by, heard his sweet voice and was so taken that he immediately took him off to meet Sly and Robbie and The Radics. There and then, they started work on this album.

The album opens with "All is In Your Eyes", a message lyric warning the listener that the eyes can conceal nothing. In "Collie Meditation" Cross Breed sounds like Courtney Melody, whilst "Dancehall Jamboree" revisits Jah Thomas's classic production of Tristan Palmer, "Entertainment (is a Form of Enjoyment)" , a tune which was also covered in a jazz style by Singers and Players/Creation Rebel back in the early/mid eighties.

If you are looking for pounding digital roots or cliched well worn, so called "steppers" tunes, this album doesn't provide that. If, however, you are seeking emotional vocals with a strong sense of melody, harmony and purity, you would be advised to check out what Nemo AKA Cross Breed is doing. This work is highly recommended.Whilst a few of the tracks are admittedly a little flippant and throw away, the majority of the album shows flashes of brilliance, with quite compelling vocal tones and atmospheres. This album shows strong promise, and future works are awaited with anticipation.
