Sublime Hispanic Experience.......2006-07-16

If you haven't heard Mercedes Sosa's song, there are some tracks on this compile that will convert you to fandom. This Argentinian woman, whose mixed descenet seems to have supplied her with all the good singing genes, was born in 1935. She has the most marvellous voice, fresh as the dawn and as crystal clear. Particularly moving is 'Gracias a la Vida' (more famously sung by Joan Baez, but Sosa's version is divine). I love this CD and it can lift me out of the doldrums in a wink. If you buy this, maybe also get the 2001 CD of 'Missa Criolla' as the Sosa version is fabulous. Her voice is mellow, but timeless, young-sounding and pure without affectation.

Thought provoking folklore.......2006-03-03

I bought this CD for a single track. A track I remember my late father playing when I was kid. I was extremely pleased to find the entire album a worthwhile listening experience. It's folklore with a message at it's best. It's thought provoking, yet also soothing and relaxing.

I first heard Mercedes Sosa several years ago on my first trip to Argentina when I was a young man, fresh out of university. I was captivated by her grace and singing then and she reminded me a lot of Montserrat Caballé of Spain, whom I saw at the Edinburgh Festival one August when I was still a college student. 30 Años is a very powerful yet romantic album. It's the kind of album you want to play when making a passionate love to your wife. Mercedes Sosa's voice penetrates to your heart and gives you that additional kick which brings out the most poetic, tender passion in you. In this CD one savors every lyric of each song that Sosa masterfully interprets. My favorite song is Alfonsina Y El Mar. Buy it, you will love it.

Sometimes an artist channels something so profound, they become a force of nature. Mercedes Sosa is such an artist. Her voice is as deep as a canyon and as wide as a sea. Spanish is my second language. I still don't understand everything. I don't need to when I listen to Mercedes Sosa. The passion in her voice transcends language and is as universal as the sound of the crashing surf. This collection contains beautiful versions of her most popular classics. "Maria Maria" is the kind of song that makes you that makes you glad to be alive. "Grasias A La Vida" reinforces that feeling with a thank you to creation. This is the kind of music that touches the soul and speaks to the common thread of what it is to be human. To a singer, I can give no higher praise.

Great memories!.......2006-10-20

I discovered Toreros Muertos when I was 14 years old, and this CD brings back all those memories. Great music, funny lyrics. It is possible you won't enjoy it if this is going to be your first time, but it paid me back every cent I spent on it. Even more.

For Spaniards and Spaniard wanna-be's (Mexicans).......2006-09-24

I bought this CD back around Xmas 1996 in Madrid, Spain. I even went to see Pablo Carbonell in an informal concert at a small bar in Spain, and thought I gave it an honest try, I really did not like his music. It seems like his type of "neither rock nor pop" style appeals only to Spaniards, but little outside of the Iberian peninsula. I was attracted by 1 song: Mi Aguita Amarilla ("My Yellow Water"), which, as the title implies, it is about urinating in great quantities after a long night of drinking beers. The song goes for around 6 minutes on his musings on where the "water" will flow through the layers of soil, into an underground well, evaporation, rain, ... etc. This was a popular song to belt out by young Spaniards towards the end of the night. No great material here, as in the rest of this CD. "Yo No Me Llamo Javier" is another song I liked (somewhat) about a man accosted by an ex-girlfiend who says the baby is his. "How could he? That is impossible! I am impotent, get away from me!". The rest of the album. their "Greatest Hits" is difficult to like, and boring, to say the least. If you really want these two songs, i suggest getting one of those "rock en espanol" compilations BMG/EMI/WEA/Universal like to put out every one in a while. At first I thought I really did not get this band at all because I am not Spanish. However, upon further thought and considerable effort i came to the logical and thoroughly valid, solid-clad conclusion that this band is overrated crap, just like the Soup Dragons. Glad they're gone.

Live tribute album plenty of romantic singers........2000-02-19

ENGLISH: This tribute was recorded in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when Jose Jose was in a terrible situation because he falled into alcohol abuse again (you can see it in his look with less weight in the cover). Later he surpassed the situation, of course, but maybe that's why it was so emotive this album.

Jose Jose sings with soften voice in "40 Y 20" at the beginning, but with a clean, strong and unforgettable voice at the end of the album in "Voy A Llenarte Toda" (with great orchestra), " La Nave Del Olvido" and "El Triste" (his greatest hits). It really shows how it was the live performance of "The Prince" in the 90's.

Also, you will find other hits of Jose Jose performed with other latin stars: "Lo que no fue no sera" performed by his own composer, Napoleon, "Pero te extraño" with his composer Armando Manzanero, "Me Basta", with Rocio Durcal, " Amar y Querer" with Guadalupe Pineda, The first verse of "Si me dejas ahora" with composer Camilo Sesto, "Amar y Querer" and "Gavilan o Paloma" performed with piano by Raul DiBlasio, "Lo Pasado Pasado" performed by Eugenia Leon, and a great duet of Jose Jose with Marco Antonio Muñiz performing "Tiempo", the same as they did in the 70's.

ESPAÑOL: Este homenaje fue grabado en Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, cuando José José pasaba por una terrible situación pues había caído nuevamente en crisis de alcoholismo (puede notarse en su aspecto delgado en la portada). Después superaría esta etapa, claro, pero tal vez por eso fue tan emotivo este album.

Jose Jose canta con voz suave en "40 Y 20" al principio, pero con una clara, potente e inolvidable voz al final del disco en "Voy A Llenarte Toda" (con una estupenda orquestación), " La Nave Del Olvido" y "El Triste" (sus máximos éxitos). Realmente muestra cómo fue la interpretación en vivo de "El Príncipe" en los 90's.

Great music, Great message........2004-07-30

I bought this album when I was 19 yrs old. My plan was to give it to my dad as a present. He loves Latin american history and I love music. I ended up keeping the album mostly for the music in it which I've loved. Back then I wasn't paying too much attention to the lyrics. But now (6 yrs later) that I've also developed a great love for Latin American history and history in general, I can truly appreciate these songs both musically and lyrically. The reading of the letter from Che to Fidel is also a great one to listen to. I would give this CD 9 out of 10 if I could only because there are a few volume issues especially in the first 10 seconds of the 2nd track (my favorite track "hasta siempre comandante", but that is the only bad thing. Otherwise it would be a 10, it still is a great cd to have, great voices, great music, various styles of music and contains a piece of history as well.
