Recordings of Classic Cuban Son.......2001-03-15

El Sexteto Habanero is one of the great exponents of that most basic of Afro-Cuban ritmos, el son. These recordings from the 1920s still speak to us today. They are as fresh as the day they were first recorded. Tunes of the caliber of "La Loma de Belén", "Espabílate", "Tin Cun Tan", and "Preludio de Godinez", to name only a few, are timeless. I remember being a child in the late 1950s--growing up in this Northern exile called New York--and hearing these tunes for the first time as my parents and/or relatives either sang these sones or played the records (which were in surprisingly good condition, considering how old these 78s were by then). I recommend without the slightest reservation this collection of some of the recorded output of one of the masters of Cuban music, the legendary Septeto Habanero. So, pour yourself a glass of good quality rum, stoke up a puro (if that is your desire), and listen to this great ageless music. You are in for a treat. I'll be joining you, that's for sure!

Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

Great recording quality and wonderful flow through the entire cd. A great 68 minutes, no need to fiddle with choosing cuts; hit the start button, sit back, enjoy the ride!

Good performances but not very good for dancing.......2002-01-25

The performances and new arrangements will be good for a listner of tango. But they are not suitable for dancing. The tracks are generally too long and the arrangements are too complex and difficult to dance.

Sexteto Mayor is the right combination of Piazzola music with tango 4x4 rythm. IF you like high level music but want also to enjoy the tango compass, this is it....and do not miss the newest albums with more Piazzola....a great orchestra..

Sexteto Mayor became world-famous as the music force in "Tango Argentino," the ultimate tango stage show, close to 20 years ago. This group is going stronger than ever as evidenced in this Latin Grammy-winning compilation, a tribute to Astor Piazzolla. It includes music both by Piazzolla and others. Wonderful arrangements and superb playing. Anyone who appreciates a range of tango music should have this in his/her collection.
