4 out of 5 stars Odd Collection of Combined Music.......2005-01-11

One of the things that makes this CD worthwhile is that its played by the regimental band of the Black Watch, who no longer exisit. They are now part of th Highland band of the Scottish Division. With current proposed cuts this band may no longer be around much longer as well! Norman Rogerson was director of music of the old regimental band back in the 1970s. He took the band on several highly successful USA tours with the pipes and drums. He was something of a maverick personality and gave the regimental band a lot noterity. Under his direction the popular "Scotch on the Rocks" was created for band and pipes. This tune had a brief spell of popularity but never quite became another "Amazing Grace". Under Rogerson the band put out a number of LPs with odd mixtures of combined music. A lot of these were rather tongue and cheek and were intended for popular or easy listening. I think with these recordings the regimental band was trying to break into a popular market. The end result was that it satisfied neither! The Black Watch wanted to become like the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. They never quite succeeded on the same level. It is surprising of all these recordings that this one should be chosen for CD format. The buyer may be interested for its vintage value of the regimental band, but will find many of the selections and arrangements a bit odd.

4 out of 5 stars Deeply Romantic Instrumental.......2003-12-08

Let me start by saying that while I am of Scot descent, I've never been particularly fond of bagpipes. To me they sound repetitive, with little to discern the playing of one song to another. This does not apply to this CD, which I've had in my collection now for ten years.

I play The Sands of Time quite often, and especially enjoy it's title track. The arrangements are interesting and haunting. They bring the listener's mind to Scotland's mist and make you feel as if you are on the green listening to this band play live.

The only criticism I have of this CD is it includes Papa's Got a Brand New Bagpipe, which is a weak attempt at rap.

1 out of 5 stars Sands of Time - Needed More.......2001-12-29

Dissapointing album. Not what you are accustomed to hearing if you enjoy superior piping and bands. Quality of recording is poor with a small collection of standard pipe tunes played in a less than inspired performance. Recommend you try another album.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD from a very good band.......2004-09-02

As a piper myself I can say that this is a good cd of "band" music, and could be useful for beginning pipers to get a sense of the tunes. This band has a good sound to them, however, if you perfer less traditional tunes (i.e. Chris Armstrong, Gordon Duncan, etc.) this may not be the cd for you.

5 out of 5 stars If you like live pipe bands, you'll LOVE this CD!.......2000-06-30

Speaking as one who haunts highland games all over the east coast of the US, and whose blood thrills to the skirl of the pipes, thump of the bass drum and precise rattle of the snare drums, I can honestly say that, in my opinion, this CD is as close to being at a live band performance as you can get. With a perfect balance of sound, so no one instrument overpowers the others, and a very nice selection of songs, presented by arguably one of the best pipe bands in North America, this is definitely a must-have for lovers of pipe bands. Put this in your CD player, close your eyes, and tear into a plate of steaming haggis with HP sauce, and you'd swear you were at the games!

I'm actually not interested in writing a review. I was wondering how I could get in contact with the artist. I'm making a video promotion for a christian organization and would love to use "Amazing Grace" on it. I'm going this for my thesis so I don't have much money. Please contact me with the person to call and ask permission. Thankyou. My phone number is (508) 347-3165 Sincerely, Lauren Paquin

5 out of 5 stars The best Pipe and Drum Band recording I've yet found.......1999-04-21

The 48th Highlanders of Canada are one of the most accomplished bands in the world, and their recordings show it. This is a must have for anyone interested in the great highland pipe bands. A practical "who's who" of traditional pieces played perfectly and recorded as well as can be hoped. As a student of the pipes I can also vouch for this cd's effectiveness as a learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Scots Guards on Display.......2001-02-25

This is a very good recent recording of the pipes and drums of the 1st battalion, the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards were the first Scots unit to tour the States in 1955, and thus made a very big impression. They were the main word in piping over here before the Black Watch took over the show! The Scots Guards have toured many times since, but unfortunately it has been a while since they have done so. Thats why its good to see a new CD by the pipes and drums which have also not recorded in a while. Under Pipe Major Macdonald, the band sounds very impressive. The playing is sharpe, and the selection of tunes is very good. The medleys are well arranged and played as only a top army pipe band can do. The listener might find it interesting to compare how the band sounds today with the older sounding recordings which are available here as well. Here one can discern that the style of playing has changed over the years. The older rope tension drums have been replaced by the newer Premier drums, which produce a very sharpe and less deep tone. Purists like myself prefer the older sound, as it is more martial in nature. The modern drums are almost jazzy, and do not belong in an army pipe band in my opinion. In years past the Scots Guards use to have two battalions, thus there were two pipe bands, which when combined produced an impressive sound. Today only the 1st battalion remains. Again, the older recordings will give the listener that opportunity to hear the massed pipes of the Scots Guards. The Scots Guards also use the standard double three beat intro for the drums in this CD, instead of the longer single five beat drum roll which normally introduces the pipes in the Scots Guards and Guards regiments as a whole. Its odd that they would do this, almost as if the style of playing was intended to be civilian-like for this CD, instead of more army style playing. Still, this is a most excellent CD which the discerning pipe listener should enjoy. The CD notes on the band and current Pipe major are also good. Recommended.
