What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.

The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

5 out of 5 stars The legacy continues.......2007-08-07

Whatever slight problems I have with this cinematic adaptation of the show, they are not reflected in the excellent soundtrack. I don't think there's been any musical soundtrack as much fun and catchy since "Grease" nearly thirty years ago. (Sorry, "Grease 2" fans, if there are any.) The orchestrations, pitch, vocals - everything is right on target. (Though there were a few times I was afraid John Travolta would lose his voice...) Nikki Blonsky does a wonderful job as Tracy Turnblad, and there can't be enough said about Queen Latifah's vocals. Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley also do great work. I thought I was starting to get over the "get off your butt and dance" feeling, but I must say this proved me wrong.

As for the "Grease" and "Grease 2" connection, how fun is it that we now have Travolta and Pfeiffer facing off in the same movie musical? Pfeiffer can finally put to rest the demons of "Cool Rider" as she more than acquits herself with her great version of "Miss Baltimore Crabs."

The new songs for the movie, including "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far" are great, and while "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" was cut, the version here with the Three Tracy's: Blonsky, Winokur and the inimitable Ricki Lake, more than makes up for its absence from the main action of the film. This soundtrack is one of the best antidotes for the long, hot summer.

Bought it for my daughters birthday, loves it, loves the film and hopes next year to produce it at our Local Drama Company. Brillant music.

5 out of 5 stars A real "FEEL GOOD" movie/soundtrack.......2007-08-04

I love movies....for a variety of reasons, sometimes for their throught-provoking abilities, innovation, story...and while "Hairspray" isn't one of those, I must say I haven't seen a movie that made me FEEL GOOD and energetic and just HAPPY in a very long time!! It's one I could watch over and over... and the soundtrack.. it's number one on my playlist right now! It will have you dancing in your seat!

4 out of 5 stars Really fun.......2007-08-01

This is good music with good singing. Not necessarily great singing. These songs are catchy and if you liked the movie you will enjoy having the music to sing all too!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fun.......2007-08-01

After seeing the movie my sister and I ran out to buy the soundtrack. It's excellent. the vocal talent they've managed to put together is amazing. Nikki Blonsky is fantastic and her enthusiasm can't be contained. Zac Efron finally gets to redeem himself after not having his vocals used in High School Musical. "Ladies' Choice" is really fun and upbeat. I can't say enough good things about Queen Latifah.

In my opinion Elijah Kelly is the best though. What a great find. "Run and Tell That" showcases his enormous talent.

The cd is great for singing along to and for making you feel good.

Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. Everywhere on Icky giant riffs leap and shout, with Flamenco horns and those eerie bagpipes and rhythmic shifts and Jack's impatient vocal kinetics, marking new territories even as the White Stripes again populate them with vintage ideas. --Andrew Bartlett

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE - This is not good rock music!!!.......2007-08-06

Led Zeppelin, Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, and Guns 'N Roses are all good examples of kick a55 rock 'n roll (4 randomly selected, legendary bands). I selected those bands because I'm guessing that if someone likes Icky Thump, they are searching for that classic, bluesy, rock sound. This crap, however, IS NOT THAT!! I don't know what they're trying to accomplish here, but it's a miss. If you like your guitar, or "bagpipe" solos sounding like long drawn out fart-whistles, then this my friend, is YOUR album!!

If you dig this album, my guess is you have bad taste in music (and probably everything else for that matter). You're either most likely offended or think I'm childish for writing this review so your natural reaction will be to give me a "not helpful" vote. I encourage this action as I am currently conducting a poll of how many amazon customers have suck a55 taste, and your vote will definitely aide in providing me accurate results.

5 out of 5 stars An album for anyone.......2007-08-06

This is my first White Stripes album. I love it! It amazes me that just two musicians can make something that sounds so good. This album puts a smile on my face. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd best in a great run so far.......2007-08-04

next to de stijl this is one of my favorites. i see more growth in the band than i did with the previous, get behind me satan. at least, a form which teases my ear. play it, let me know what you think.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2007-08-03

I am a boomer who usually sticks to Van Morrison, Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, the Band, Dylan etc. I had heard a great deal about White Stripes. I tried this CD, and I really like it. It is interesting and different in many ways, but each song is good; each song catches your ear. Some reviewers thought bagpipes or other sounds were a bit of a joke, but I think each song works very well. (I also liked Radiohead, Hail to the Thief, in the kind of way that you know it is different, but everything is good in its own way.) I would recommend this CD to anyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Best White Stripes yet.......2007-08-01

This is definitely their best CD to date. I love that they have a definite style that they don't stray from, but still manage to make most songs interesting and unique. If you like the White Stripes, this is a must have.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

4 out of 5 stars Alternative Rock!?!?!?!.......2007-08-06

Arrrggghh...I must be getting old, but I have a place in my heart for alternative rock, having grown up in the 80's (born 1970) and remembering when REM, U2, the Cure, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, Joy Division (etc.) were truly "alternative rock." Well anyway, Amazon has classified this excellent Traveling Wilburys set as "alternative rock," which I just don't understand. I bet that Roy, Tom, Bob, Jeff, and George had no idea they were getting together to record an "alternative rock" album (I'm sure they were highly influenced by Bauhaus and Nine Inch Nails and such). OK, off my soapbox for now, but I do recall LOVING the first Wilburys album when it came out (especially Handle with Care, such a terrific tune and one that was recently covered lovingly by Jenny Lewis)..."Tweeter and the Monkey Man" was a great Dylan tune skewering Springsteen...these guys were at the top of their game for the first CD. The second one was inevitably a letdown, but still had a few good songs. This was one of the more fun "supergroup" projects ever (the key: they did NOT take themselves too seriously on here).

5 out of 5 stars The Traveling Wilburys.......2007-08-05

I really liked my purchase. When I heard the Traveling Wilburys had just released this CD I looked on BMG and they didn't even have it for sale. I got two CD's and a DVD for a great price of $19.95!

5 out of 5 stars A historical event in rock music retrieved and completed.......2007-08-05

If you are a Harrison, Dylan, Petty, or Orbison (what a voice!) fan, then this musical package should interest you. If a fan of more than one or all, then what are you waiting for? A historical event in rock music, one of the top 100 albums, as rated by Rolling Stone Magazine. The DVD is very interesting, nicely explaining the genesis and creation of the first album and the character of the ensemble. I already owned the original CD, but glad I also bought this. Phenomenal! Everyone in your family may enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars A classic for your music collection.......2007-08-05

I jumped on the chance to buy the re-release of these albums. I didn't buy them the first time around.I love every song on these CD's. The package presentation is nice, along with the booklet and bonus dvd (take the time to watch it- it's really interesting)It's the best $20 I've spent in a while.

From Amazon.co.uk

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord

Album Description

Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.

Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."

Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

4 out of 5 stars Very good, I wouldn't say Great necessarily.......2007-08-06

A good Cd it truly is, but it's kind of short. About 10 tracks maybe. This Cd is perfect if you are depressed and in need of mourning. Her tortured soul bleeds through her songwriting and you really get a peek into her inner turmoil. The songs also tend to sound the same. This cd is addicting but I can't say a classic. I personally love it but I don't want to call it a GREAT piece for every ear out there, but definitely a very good piece.

4 out of 5 stars music to share.......2007-08-06

this is a nice change of recent/newer music.
i bought my own copy & purchased a second for my dad as a father's day gift.
(he enjoys it and is turning others onto it, just the same)
my daughter, 7 at the time of purchase, had me put some of the tunes on her ipod.
that speaks volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Very different........2007-08-06

I heard Rehab on the radio and I thought that this was a different sound. Her voice is husky but filled with emotion. This cd is completely different and refreshing. I recommend this cd if you like to hear an artist off the beaten path.

5 out of 5 stars Amy is a breath of fresh air.......2007-08-04

Her voice is magic and it reminds me of how good R&B used to be and still can be without the preservatives. When she sings, she hits me in the gut and I can relate to her songs in some ways. For someone so young, she sings about a wide range of life experiences. She will go a long way and she's truly an amazing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Not just about "Rehab"........2007-08-03

I had heard about Amy Winehouse long before her American TV performances that made her big in the US. So when her album came out, I just had to get it THAT day. Although most people know Amy from her catchy single, "Rehab", others know her for her jazzy music, incredible voice, and strong, yet witty messages in her songs.

Here's a quick overview of the highlights (and possibly lowlights) from the album Back to Black.

First, I can't go through a complete review without mentioning "Rehab". With its catchy lyrics, sexy jazz feel, and Amy's deep voice, it made a great first US single for this songstress. From there we go onto another of my favorite songs "You Know I'm No Good". The best part of the song is the sing-song, almost nursery rhyme feel of the verses. Its message is a strong one: I've cheated on you but "I told you I was trouble. You know that I'm no good".

Another great song on this album is "Me and Mr. Jones". Although some would argue that the entire album sounds like an old 1960's jazz album, I think "Me and Mr. Jones" is the most 60's sounding song on the album. Amy sings about her complicated relationship with "her man" and suggests that she's really not over him meanwhile inventing her own word to describe what is going on (although I won't mention the word since profanity is not allowed on Amazon). This song is another great example of how amazing Amy sounds when she hits the low notes.

My absolute favorite song is "Back to Black". The infectious sound of the keyboard and the violin, the simple, yet powerful chorus, and, of course, Amy's voice suggests that although the random humorous lyrics she throws in here and there show her playful personality, she also has a hard time dealing with parts of her life. If I were to suggest one song to listen to on this album, "Back to Black" is it.

Two other songs to look out for are "Love is a Losing Game" and "Tears Dry On Their Own". Two different messages but two great sounding songs. "Love" is one of the few ballads on this album while "Tears" is one of the few (if not the only) uplifting songs on this album. The bonus track is simply a remix of "You Know I'm No Good". Not much different from the original since the only difference really is a rap solo.

The other 4 songs I haven't mentioned are pretty good songs but they aren't outstanding. "Just Friends" just doesn't have the catchyness that the other songs have and I tend to skip right over it everytime I listen to this album. "Wake Up Alone"'s sound is extremely catchy (and it almost sounds like something you've heard before) and I absolutely love how sultry and sad Amy sounds. The sort of monotonous sound of the song prevents me from differentiating the chorus from the rest of the song so I wouldn't call this a "sing along" by any means. "Some Unholy War" is rather short and reads more like a letter than a song. "He Can Only Hold Her", again, is another catchy song but I wouldn't say it stands on its own.

I tend to think that my taste in music is eclectic so I didn't have a hard time truly liking this album. People who stick with one type of music may have difficulty getting into Back to Black but I suggest having an open mind when listening to this album. It is nothing like I have ever heard in the last 10 years or so and if Back to Black is an example of what's to come from musicians in the future, I'm ecstatic. I highly recommend this album.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I enjoyed the movie so much I had to get the soundtrack. their voices are UHmazing and almost make me cry everytime :)

4 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening.......2007-08-07

The movie was fabulous, and the "soundtrack" is too. I can't stop listening, and the songs keep playing in my mind. I love every one of them. The recording is not directly from the movie, however, but studio versions of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Once.......2007-08-05

This musical is from the independent movie, Once. It is very beautiful, lyrical and haunting at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Swell Season+The Frames=This CD.......2007-08-05

I was hesitant to purchase this CD because many of the tracks are available elsewhere in my collection. The Swell Season CD (which I HIGHLY recommend) features many of the songs, a few others are found in the catalog of Glen's band, the Frames (a longer version of "Say it to me now" is on 1996's Fitzcarraldo, "When your mind's made up" is on The Cost).
The songs in the Once soundtrack are slightly different versions, and there's a few originals that make the purchase a worthwhile one.

Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. Like Hannah before her, Miley makes the best of both worlds--this well-worth-it set, by turns rockin' and reflective, is a masterful example. --Tammy La Gorce

I did write a review and it said I didnt like the Meet Miley CD, But that has changed Completely!!!! I LOVE the miley one now! I Can sing every song! It may take a while, but once you listen to the songs again, they'll be playing in your head all day! And you'll love it! I didnt like it at first, because i'd never heard the songs before, but now that I know them, I love it!

1 out of 5 stars THIS sells better than Janet?.......2007-08-06

I absolutely LOVED Janet Jackson's latest album. Unofortunately it was a flop barely selling 600,000 copies. Hannah Montana's selling more than Janet's but it's not as good! The songs on here are boring and forgettable. No originality to them, just pop produced for the masses. Sure she's pretty and has a nice voice but will people be singing along to these songs 10 years form now? Probably not. Another Disney newcomer will outshine Miley and she'll be a has-been. Janet's voice is unique and her music is too. Buy "20 years old" by Janet Jackson instead. It's much better!

Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Coolest of all are two tracks at cross purposes-- "Chelsea Rodgers" fuses funk with disco until it's so far off the hook it's in a heap on the floor, and "All the Midnights in the World" paints a picture of artistic maturity through piano and lyrics that lean hard on positivity. There's an elegance to it that Prince fans, no strangers to pop music that's truly sublime, won't fail to appreciate. --Tammy La Gorce

    Album Description

Simply put, Planet Earth is the album longtime Prince fans have been waiting for. Several cuts on this album revisit some of the classic Prince sound the captured fans all over the world and helped deem him an incomparable music icon. Superstar and legendary musician prince kicked off 2007 with a show stopping Super Bowls Half-time performance. Prince pulled out all the stops during the second most-watched super bowl broadcast ever. With an estimated 93.2 million viewers to entertain, Prince wasted no time showing off his stages powers and irrefutable guitar skills. He masterfully captured the attention and respect of music fans in general, while sending a message to long time Prince fans that he was ready to once again reign supreme.

3 out of 5 stars I Know U Hear Me Like a Whisper in Ur Ear.......2007-08-08

Many artists like to say it is all about the music all the while charging three digest to their concerts and licensing their music for even the most inane products. Then there is Prince who, ever since ending his long time battle with label Warner Bros, has been the most progressive artist in getting his music out including giving copies of his latest albums out to anyone who buys a ticket to his concerts, which are reasonably priced when his contemporaries are charging obscene prices. His latest attempt to get his music out came when he struck a deal with British paper The Mail who attacked Prince's latest album, Planet Earth, to one of its editions last week.

Naturally Columbia Records, who is handling the world wide distribution of the album wasn't too thrilled and decided not to release the album in England. Not like Prince cares because all he wants is for people to hear the music. And ever since changing his name back from an unpronounceable symbol, there has been some great music including the grove of Musicology, the funk of Black Sweat, and even his contribution to the Happy Feet Soundtrack was pretty catchy.

And that is what makes Planet Earth so disappointing. Certainly other artist would like to produce an album this good a year away from their thirtieth anniversary in music, but considering his recent work, this album falls flat. And that is even with the Purple One bring back past collaborators Shelia E., a few members from the New Power Generation, and Wendy and Lisa (no word on if Diamond and/or Pearl will show up in a video from the album). Although Planet Earth is still better than his nineties, symbol era.

The album opens and closes with Prince's thoughts on current hop button topics including the fragile Earth on the title track and war on Resolution that aren't good enough to convert people to his cause. And that is not because Prince is like many musicians like Sum 41 or Maroon 5 that have jumped on political bandwagon in recent years because everyone else is as Prince has made some of the best socially conscious songs like the classics Sign O the Times and Money Don't Matter 2Night or the more recent Cinnamon Girl. It just the new songs won't be added to that list anytime soon.

Prince does some retreading on the album too. The One U Wanna C might as well have been called I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man 2 complete with the line like, "you ain't no one night stand" but this could end up bringing down the house when performed live. What won't though is Mr. Goodnight where he bring back half rap, half talk come on's like Gett Off but they just aren't as good now that Prince has gone and found religion, so no talk of Almond Joys instead he just wants to watch Chocolat. Yawn.

Again, that is not to say the album is bad, it is just not Prince good. Guitar shows he can still handle the ax and will make you thank someone that Prince hasn't found someone he loves more than his guitar yet, though still not as blistering as anything from Purple Rain, or his solo from While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Somewhere Here on Earth has a cool jazzy feel to it thanks to some well placed trumpet and would be best played in a smoky club. Hopefully Planet Earth is just a test run for something classic that Prince will unveil for his thirtieth anniversary next year.

5 out of 5 stars Go Head Prince!.......2007-08-07

Okay this is the Prince album I've been waiting for! It will make you get up out of your seat to groove! Chelsea Rodgers!! Guitar! Hot tracks! Prince is keeping up with the times, talking bout the war on Planet Earth, having a kid on Future Baby Mama, celebrating life in general. You can't go wrong with this album, there's rap, jazz, r&b, disco, funk, and all of it rolled up into one!

3 out of 5 stars Green is the new Purple.......2007-08-07

Prince has been doing a graceful glide into musical middle-age ever since the solid "Musicology" by basically being himself. "Planet Earth" offers all of what you would expect from our aging Lothario. There's a terrific social song in the title track, a funk-rock work-out with "Guitar," a big salacious come-on with "Mr Goodnight" and a shout to the man upstairs. The good stuff is prime Prince, and when he whispers "I've got a mind full of good intentions and a mouth full of Raisinettes," you feel like your back in "Purple Rain" territory. Wendy and Lisa are even on board.

Problem is, there are a few tracks here that are just brazenly mediocre. An artist as brilliant as Prince should be able to avoid cliches like fake scratchy record grooves or the somewhat corny protest song ("Resolution"). The title track is so much better, on a par with Sign 'O' the Times meeting "An Inconvenient Truth." But if an album with some lame tracks is what it takes to coax Prince into admitting "I love you baby, but not like I love my guitar" before letting rip with a wild solo, then it's worth it. Just keep your expectations on that level, and "Planet Earth" will spin for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not Prince's Best, But Still Solid!.......2007-08-07

Prince has returned somewhat to his roots with this cd which has a pop-mellow feel to It. The music flows beautifully In the classical Prince style. But there Is something missing. Perhaps It Is just too short,(only 10 songs) It's Like It just getting started and It ends. Now some, want Prince to make another sign of times or purple Rain but those days are Long gone. Prince has some very bad cds come out Rainbow Children, Come etc. But, he has grown, and we should not Look for him to be the prince of 25 years ago. He would Look rather silly at age 49 singing what he sung at age 26. We sometimes don't want to see an artist grow, or go In a different direction. The first part of the cd Is kind of slow but then It picks up. As far as It being too preachy, or political I don't always agree with eveything Prince puts In his songs but I see It as a part of his growth as a person and a artist. My only grip Is that It just was not balanced, or long as I would have liked. But,even with that being said, this Is still a cd worthy of being purchased!

1 out of 5 stars Hard To Believe An Album Worse Than 3121.............2007-08-07

Being a die hard Prince fan its hard to write this review as I'm feeling a sense of disloyalty. 3121 for me was probably the worst Prince album ever until now Planet Earth rivals it. There really is only one good track on Planet Earth in my opinion and thats Somewhere Here On Earth, a ballad with a sort of jazz sense to it, it is the one true gem on the cd. Chelsea Rodgers has great music but the lyrics fall way short of being anything interesting, as Prince pontificates the perfect female who reads a million books and never has sex......snooze!!!! These virtues are outdated, boring, and out of touch with his audience. There once was a Prince who would have called her a Sexy Moth******** then shagged her..... I miss that Prince and I feel alot of people miss that Prince.

The title track however has a great message, about saving our planet unfortunately it is done to music that seems like it should be in the broadway musical of Beauty and the Beast. Guitar is an emotionless track with boring "I love my guitar lyrics" that scream of a pre teen geek infatuated with his guitar. The rest of the album is laced religous propaganda that serves to further alienate Prince from his audience.

Prince has always been an intelligent artist that challenged his audience to think, now he just preaches no matter how many fans he has to lose to get his message across.

Similar to the great artists that battled alcoholism and drug abuse such as the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith who once they cleaned up lost their touch. In Prince's case he never had a drug or alcohol problem but his music suffered once he found God.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising and Magnificient.......2007-08-08

This is just about the most beautiful collection of songs I have ever heard. Paul's voice is mesmerizing; melodic and powerful throughout. The CD surprised me; it had hardly any operatic pieces, and it suggested to me that Paul could be the type of crossover star (from opera to showtunes amd popular music) that Mario Lanza was. Perhaps Hollywood should consider remaking a few of Mario's movies with Paul playing Mario's part (Paul, I hope you can act, too). My favorite piece on the CD is "Amapola", a beautiful song masterfully sung by Paul. The melodic character of Paul's voice "rings out" throughout the piece. In addition to the first two songs on the CD (which Paul sung and probably everyone heard on Britain's "Got Talent" show) I thought that the song "Caruso" best showed off the range and power of Paul's voice. Maybe that means Paul should start his movie career with a remake of "The Great Caruso."

Bottom line? Buy the CD; you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful CD.......2007-08-08

I bought this CD because I was so moved by his performance and victory on Britain's Got Talent. I loved watching him perform, but in the back of my mind, I was worried that I would not love the CD quite as much as the Britain's Got Talent shows; I was worried that the lack of visual and lack of audience would diminish the music.

    Boy was I wrong!

This CD stands out on its own. The quality of sound is fantastic, and his voice is as rich as ever.

The great thing about Paul Potts, in addition to be a fabulous opera singer, is that he has popularized opera, in my opinion, like no other person ever has.

Get this CD. You will love it! It has surpassed my highest expectation.

    5 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2007-08-08

While I was thrilled with the entire Paul Potts story, a part of me was dubious about the rendering of an album in such short order, and how it might be "anti-climactic" with respect to the now-famous U-Tube clips. "Wow". That's how I described it to my wife via text message after hearing it completely. Compelling and spacious, with energy and passion. It was the best twenty bucks I've spent in some time. This man is for real!

5 out of 5 stars The best voice ever heard he is touched by an angel.......2007-08-08

I saw and heard Paul Potts first on the internet from a you tube or some other video selection. I fell in love with his voice from the first note I heard. Tears literally came from my eyes when I heard his angelic voice. Its that beautiful. I knew right then and there that he would be a world wide star! I have never ever been affected by any type or kind of music the way that Paul's music has affected me. And that says alot as I worked as a Radio Station DJ and a club DJ for many years! This is the first Paul Potts CD I own and it will not be the last. As long as he is on Earth and making CDs I will be wanting them from him! Ray

5 out of 5 stars An incredible CD by one fine singer.......2007-08-07

Paul Potts has a beautiful voice that has been kissed by God. My wife and I congratulate him on his debut CD, and hope for many more throughout his career. One of the hallmarks of a good album is that when you listen to the tracks over and over again, it's like hearing them for the first time. That is the magical experience that we have with Paul Potts. His interpretation of the works, the feeling that is so evident on listening, comes through loud and clear. I personally couldn't care less about any perceived faults with this man which I certainly didn't hear. Bon Voyage with your singing career, Paul. You are a tremendous talent that we're all fortunate was found, and hopefully, one day, we will be able to listen to you live in America!

It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK CD, BUT NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS "IT'S TIME"..........2007-08-02

... although it does have its moments, especially with "It Had Better Be Tonight" - that one's a grand slam home run that's guaranteed to be a live performance favourite when MB hits the road on tour.

On the flip side, his remake of "That's Life" is a clunker that could have been a smash with a punchier arrangement putting the emphasis on the horn section - the gospel-influenced approach was simply a badly-concocted idea (heck, even David Lee Roth, of all people, did a better version).

But I've noticed that about Michael Buble; his remakes are either fantastic or outright throw-aways. So far, "It's Time" represents the apex of his career.

    2 out of 5 stars Frank Bubbly.......2007-08-01

I kept hearing the name Michael Buble and finally checked him out. Heard "Always on my mind" on his MySpace page and was blown away. Loved his older hit "Home" too. Took a chance on this album when I saw it at Starbucks. Listened to it and....

Please don't try and be a new Frank Sinatra, just be yourself, Mike, you got the chops, as you clearly show on the sublime "Always on my mind". I never tire of listening to that track, but skip alll the others. My ears were bleeding listening to you butcher the Eric Clapton tune "Wonderful tonight".

The production is superb - big points for that: 1 star. 1 star for "Always on my mind".

I wish you would have recorded an entire album of new classic sounding tracks a la "Always on my mind". That would have been a 5 star album.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-28

I love this CD. Michael Buble' has such a smooth voice. I can't get enough. It's easy listening, good for dancing, romantic. and I cannot say enough about the music.

2 out of 5 stars Does he have a speech impediment or is it just me?.......2007-07-27

Doesn't anyone notice he has a speech impediment? He slurs some words and has a very pronounced lisp at times. I'm not making fun of the handicapped. If he was someone that I met on the street I wouldn't mention it, but he has chosen a profession that requires clear speech and should be held to higher standards. If he was my dentist, I would be good with it.

The songs where there are fewer instances of "s" or "th" etc. are fantastic, but songs like "World On A String" are reminiscent of William Hung. I really like "Me And Mrs. Jones", but I can still hear a slight lisp here and there. I don't think I remember hearing the slurring and lisping on previous recordings??? I agree with a previous reviewer that asked how the studio could put this CD out.

5 out of 5 stars Buble is still on a roll.......2007-07-23

Michael Buble still fills the musical niche left by Sinatra's passing. The big band is top-notch and Michael, despite his youth, swings big time on these solid standards. Another good addition to your Buble collection.
