Gil and Milton

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Gil & Milton represents the first collaboration between Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento, who between them have shaped the whole tradition of Brazilian music since the 1960s. Gil hails from Salvador, where he helped launch the "tropicalismo" music whose political subversiveness forced him into exile in London, though he's now back home as a celebrated political figure. Nascimento comes from Minas Gerais and had an equally subversive political start; he too gravitated to London, where his music was heavily influenced by the Beatles. Track 6 of this lovely CD is George Harrison's "Something," though it was never so charmingly sung: charm is in fact the keynote of everything these two men sing. Milton--once described by his colleague Caetano Veloso as mil tons ("a thousand tones")--revels in his rich vocal palette, offsetting Gil's more laid-back softness. But behind these songs, with their beguilingly gentle backing, there lurk hard truths about love and war, poverty and oppression. It's great to have the full lyrics, but serious listeners will have to invest in a Portuguese dictionary. --Michael Church

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful tribute to a Brazilian Master.......2006-02-16

Moacir Santos is a master composer, arranger and saxophonist. His shore is Brazilian Jazz with a combo comprising rhythm section + brass in a unique combination which is consistently applied to such original and unconventional compositions.

In the late 60s, Santos went to live in the USA where he's recorded three albums for Blue Note Records. He also became an auxiliary writer for some great arranger just like Billy Byers was to Quincy Jones.

'Ouro Negro' is a 2-CD album dedicated to the music of Moacir Santos. It was recorded in 2003 under his direction. He was already retired then at his 79 years old but all his great arrangements are there as played by current important in Brazil's music scene in brand-new renditions.

Tracks cover music from Santos' classic album "Coisas" (also available here @Amazon) and also from his three American albums.

Features some Santos' standards like 'Coisa #5' (aka 'Nana'), 'April Child', 'Suk-Cha' and 'Mother Iracema' all with great updated arrangements.

Also features Gilberto Gil, Djavan and Milton Nascimento plus sime unnecessary vocals.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful revelation!.......2005-02-23

So I'm in Sao Paulo having dinner with a Brazilian friend and we're discussing Brazilian music and he mentions this CD and Moacir Santos. He knows I know something about Brazilian music despite the fact I'm a gringo. But I had never heard of this guy and so I must have flashed a completely blank look. My friend shrugged and told me to go buy it. Of course I couldn't find it in Brazil so I ordered it online and it was waiting for me when I got home. But I did pick up a copy of Coisas and got a taste of what to expect.

Oh my goodness--it is heaven! It is unbelievably familiar especially for those who pay attention to jazz and to movie soundtracks. Apparently Santos has lived in Pasadena for over 30 years, toiling in obscurity in the film business. His sound is unbelievably comforting and listenable.

Perhaps this is his time and this is an extraordinary pair of cds. Obviously a labor of love by those who organized and produced this in Brazil, I can not recommend it enough.

Definitely check it out...

5 out of 5 stars Black gold, in deed.......2004-11-20

Big band Brazilian music was never that attractive to me. The music on this CD is different, however. It's got the most beautiful compositions. The arrangements are fantastic. And the rhythms are fabulous. This CD may turn into a classic sooner than one might think. Black gold, in deed.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling Arrangements.......2004-11-17

Two cds pack in the music, with new versions of instrumental and jazz standards providing the compelling arrangements equally applicable to a dinner club, casual listener or avid jazz fan venue alike.

5 out of 5 stars Ouro Negro + Moacir Santos = Colors of Brazil.......2004-11-12

Ouro Negro is a recent release by one of my long time favorites, Moacir Santos. I owe him a great debt of gratitude for bringing such joy into my life. This is a beautful CD by one of the long-acknowledged maestros of Brazil. It has incredibly intricate, yet accessible rhythms, lush harmonies, soaring solos from some of the great musicians of his country, and the essence of Moacir's joyous spirit! Favorite tunes?? Hard to pick and choose, but "Mother Iracema," "Suk-Cha," and "Carnaval" are hard to beat.

If you are in love with the music of Brazil, you owe it to yourself to own this one. I wish I could give it 6 stars!

I smiled from ear to ear from the moment I put it on until the last song ended.

estos dos monstruos pueden hacerlo mucho mejor.

2 out of 5 stars Seen better days.......2004-03-07

Two of Brazil's MPB greats together - a match made in heaven. But the result is a bit more earthbound, alas.

The album was nominated for a World Music Grammy several years back (out of loyalty to the artists, perhaps), but even the overly deferential members of the Recording Academy - who would have LOVED to honor these two honorable musicians - couldn't bring themselves to make their album the finalist.

Gil is in fairly good voice in his 60's, but Milton's soaring vocal style from his youth has crash-landed in recent years. The songs don't gel, don't have any rhythmic fire beneath them.

Much better to support these two by buying their earlier, more laudable career efforts.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag..........2002-01-02

Overall, this seems rather bland. It's a step up for Nascimento, whose work is usually fairly torturous (this at least is pretty listenable...), but a step backwards for Gilberto Gil, who in the mid-1990s rebounded from a decades-long aesthetic slump and made a series of outstanding new albums. Gil's hot streak still continues, with this collaboration as sort of a mild misfire. This disc is okay, but I agree with the reviewer who said that there are better albums by both artists that you could listen to instead.

5 out of 5 stars Two masters: art in full maturity and extraordinary vitality.......2001-02-06

It is a delight to be blessed by what these two have been able to produce together now, in full maturity. For years and years I have been following the work of Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento. Now, in this creative and powerful meeting, they share the joy of knowing how to blend their talents without constraints, in a most generous flow. Starting with "Sebastian", in reference the Saint who protects Rio de Janeiro, they have created a song of love and reverence to this beautiful city, proposing to heal its wounds of violence and pain through love and song. This is part of a series of new compositions, with Milton's melody and Gil's words. "Duas Sanfonas" invites the new generation to come play and sing with their elders, in this song that celebrates unity and joy. "Bom Dia", a well known song by Gil and Nana Caymi, is sang in the most touching, delicate and tender way, their two unique voices blending in the most exquisite manner. "Dinamarca", a touching tribute to a loved one that has died, their longing expressed in a melodic interaction between voices and poetic words... The combination of traditional songs with new compositions, all of it offer us a display of the many facets of fluent talent and vision of these two musicians. This album expresses the joy and humbleness that is acquired only when true mastery is reached! I highly recommend you listen to it with your full attention!!!
