Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

An album of extremes.......2007-05-11

The best way to describe Come to Daddy is that it is an album of extremes. There is no middle ground. One song will be soft and soothing and the next will be intense and menacing. "Funny Little Man" is more offensive than funny and "To Cure a Weakling Child (Contour Regard)" isn't as effective as the version that appears on the Richard D. James album. But those two tracks are offset by a couple of powerful ones that rank with Aphex Twin's best. "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" is avant-garde electronica at its finest and "IZ-US" is an absolutely riveting closer. These two tracks rank with "Boy/Girl" and "Windowlicker" for sheer hypnotic effect that is given to the listener. You just don't want them to end. The four other songs, especially "Flim", are satisfactory. The production on Come to Daddy is what instantly struck me the most. As great as the production on the Richard D. James album was, it's just not as pristine and crisp-sounding as Come to Daddy. There's a lot going on in the album, but the production lets you catch every bit of it. Yes...the production on Come to Daddy is among the best you'll ever hear in any genre and is just about perfect. The originality and production makes Come to Daddy worthwhile and, along with the Richard D. James album and Selected Ambient Works: 85-92, among Aphex Twin's best albums. B+

Techno intellectual.......2007-03-23

A small EP of the best compositional work in the Techno genre that I've ever heard. If the point of music is to represent spiralling electric currents in your brain, then this album will be much more enjoyable than the mind-numbing MIDI 4-on-the-floor of the majority of work in the Genre.

precisely, this was my reaction upon seeing the video. A scintillatingly devilish promenade of bizarre apparitions, a turmoil of postnuclear visions...and i still have not figured out what makes it so appaling. The iconography of come to daddy has ever since made its way around art forums, magazines and had a greater impact on video-culture as none before, that owes less to the aphexian impromptu itself, than to us, masses who devour anything that is scandalous, and revolving. Thus a sound may only sound as it is visualized, and this may be a reason why, an aphexian experiment could be transplanted to M.T.V standards. Phonic violence is not the case of visual violence, and i think this a reason why we should credit RDJ more for his genuine sampling than for the visual inertia we are faced with in this video. This particular brakethrough does not apply to all aphexian sampling, i have seen other videos that did not scandalize the auditive this far...though windowlicker might be an acception. Come to daddy is musically more than just a scandal to the senses, in fact it juxtaposes them to a certain extent. Altough we seem to see all we hear we have to come to terms with deception, a musical ambiental experience should not be mistaken with the images of horror, and loathing we are bombed with day in day out.

Shortlisted as top 5 of 2006 by Gilles Peterson then chosen as the 2006 Worldwide All Winners Album of the Year by the audience, Bonobo's Days to Come album is easily the finest fusion of jazz and electro styles to hit the decks in the last year. But, credentials aside, let us now move on to particulars:
INTRO - This intentionally brief interlude makes a bold announcement of the intense soundscapes we are soon to visit. Basically, this album enters without subtlety, it's on and it wants everyone to know it.
DAYS ... - Having just thrilled us (albeit prematurely), we now transition into the groove that will set the mood for most of the album. Further, the newest development in the Bonobo sound-evolution springs itself on us: VOCALS and good ones at that. The inherently rythmic, molasses-sweet voice of Bajka (Poets of Rhythm) harkens us back to the days of Nina Simone while the playfully bouncing beat sweeps us along assuring us with brass and soothing our beast throughout with chimes seemingly being played by the wind itself.
BETWEEN ... - A sharp contrast to the previous track (and the rest of the album), this track is darker focusing its instrumental on enhancing the narrative vocals while the flute, gong, and creaking door-hinge type sound lend themselves to visions of ancient rituals. While there are movements in this track, the general motion seems to be an evolution towards an anticlimactic end.
THE FEVER - Back to the groove and damn is it kickin this time! Notice that the subtler sounds are starting to gain prominence. This arrangement is both beautiful and delicious in its delicate intricacies, layering simple piano-chord progressions over a complex beat before moving into the next movement during which we cannot fight the feeling that this is all starting to get very serious.
KETTO - Did someone say serious? Try mixing a deep, driving bass slam with a jewelry box before adding in some angelbaby-talk and a Brazilian cuckoo just in case. This is the second track to feature hand claps and in this instance they are vital to the timing/beat.
NIGHTLITE - Here it is, the track we've all been waiting for (some of us longer than others but hey " ... come, let's bring light to the night of day."). Such strings! Jazz organ! Guitar! Meaningful pauses, breaks!!! It's all about the burst of musical energy in the final movement " ... have they got problems of they own?"
TRANSMISSION94 1 & 2 - If Nightlite is to be the lyrically inspired crescendo of the album then Transmissions is it's instrumental counterpart. I love nothing more than to try and convince myself that the song is over half-way through, right before the second movement is heralded by the sax, then I realize I've forgotten all about the imminent cyclical breakdown which proceeds to shatter the sound-space continuum with it's brilliant sonic verbosity. As the horns chase spiraling flutes through the cosmos amidst the cymbals' crash I know what it is to return, to forever.
ON YOUR ... - What else are you going to put after Transmission? The throw-away track!
IF YOU ... - This track is a brilliant addition to the rare sub-genre started by (in my mind) Air's "Playground Love" off the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. This sub-genre is the antithesis of the unfortunately overpopulated high-school pop love song niche. A droning, subversive nocturne which exclaims the perverse implications common to all trysts. But what is this at the end? Redemption by reprise!
WALK IN ... - The "parkour theme". Vaguely reminiscent of Days to Come, this narrative acts as something of a bookend before the encore. Notice the cyclical theme that starts to develop/announce itself in this track only to be fully exploited in the next. As with several of the other tracks on this album, the arrangement is such that it only fully develops in the second major movement.
RECURRING - Q: What is recurring? A: Everything! The perfect end to a perfect day, progressively building upon itself to create an undeniable sense of movement, this piece is overflowing with nostalgia and the promise of, what else, Days to Come.

General notes: Instrument use and themes develop throughout the album track by track. Repeated listenings help us to make more sense of this well arranged progression. This album achieves something else worth noting: a sound that is both new and ancient all at the same time. These are the rhythms of something much greater than ourselves.

The second disc is undoubtedly a nod to the purists and those who didn't get enough instrumental lovin' on Bonobo's previous "Dial M ..." effort. What shouldn't be so surprising is how well these tracks work without vocals as the sounds have plenty to say on their own.

Simply Breathtaking !.......2000-05-14

I have always been a lover of classical music, but had never been truly introduced to the waltz until my wonderful father sent me this CD. After one time through it...I was in love. The romance...the feeling...the images of days gone by. Ladies in long, flowing gowns, men in black tails and white gloves...swirling around a ballroom floor. It's all right there for you to hear. Just lovely. My personal favorite is Song of Vilja, composed by Lehar. I think this to be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. This collection is a must for any lover of the classics....but for waltz enthusiasts, it is Heaven !

I am a great fan of Andre Rieu and his Orchestra and this in possibly their best. I changd the CD's in the changer in my vehicle about once a week but this one usuallly occupies the honored number one spot for months at a time.

Pure Viennese Magic!.......1999-03-01

A wonderful find for any lover of Viennese music, particularly of the "Silver Era" of operetta. Great renditions of operetta fare by Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Stolz and Benatzky. Also charming Viennese songs, such as "Die Engeln Kommen auf Urlaub Nach Wien," "Meine Mutterl war eine Weanerin," and other "heuriger" wine garden favorites. The whole thing is a delight!

Silky Rhythmic Trip-Hop Seduction.......2007-03-15

"Days to Come" begins with a brief idyllic intro to get you into the mood of the music. Sweet flute mingles with nature sounds to hint at an outdoor location with tropical appeal. It sounds like someone is swimming in water and is talking in a cave near a beach. Bajka's soulful presence really starts this album off with her smooth silky vocals on the second track and by then you are in the mood of this sultry journey into imaginative lyrics and earthy elegance.

"Between the Lines" has a hopeful message of love and peace with an earth shattering style beat that keeps the rhythm moving right along into your day. It is such a fun energetic song, you might almost be sorry when it ends. Fortunately "The Fever" steps right up onto the stage and provides heavier urban rhythms with a tribal appeal. This vast expansive track melts into a fizzy bliss that then opens up immediately into "Ketto's" angelic strings that mix with a toy chest of sounds to bring about a sweeping ambience with fascinating hypnotic elements and sweet vocals layered with playful bouncy beats. This is a gorgeous heady track that ends with water dropping into a brass bowl.

This album keeps taking off into new worlds and "Nightlite" has a 70s tambourine style mixed with a slipping into the night gypsy ambience. "Transmission 94" is a party all on its own with saxophone and relentless percussion mingling with faint remembrances of ancient chants and a dash of electronic chaos. The music goes right through you and then turns silky with delicate strains of saxophone. Listening to "On Your Marks" on headphones makes the floor feel like it is vibrating.

"Recurring" has exciting vibratory elements that send this track spinning into a musical ecstasy with deep reverberations and chimes blended effortlessly together into warm ancient and urban coalescence.

The second disc takes all the vocal tracks and turns them instrumental (except for "Nightlite" with a male vocal instead of Bajka) for your varied listening pleasure. In the end, you come away feeling like you have experienced an exotic electronica art form with a highly creative appeal. "Hatoa" concludes the adventure with a warm soothing downtempo dream. I think in the end, I love the first CD the most because of Bajka's vocals.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.
