4 out of 5 stars Better than The Beatles?.......2007-06-08

During the sixties it was a common issue from the press in Argentina to compare Los Shakers with The Beatles. Actually, they dressed like their english counterpart, same hair, same instruments. The folks from Uruguay were compleately inspired after the Fab4.
But they had a difference: they were originals in their way to write their songs, beautiful songs. It's hard to imagine what could be happened if they were born americans or europeans. Probably the world would be much more influenced by their music.
Los Shakers cut several hits, songs that brought them even to the north american market, songs like "Never, never". But, as south americans, they were about to receive the same treatment that "latin" rock music receives from the press worldwide: only indifference.
This CD is a chance to hear a small portion of their talent. Unfortunatelly we don't have the complete collection of their records, only "big hits". But at least there's a chance to know the boys and their music.
    Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Serie de Oro by Los Shakers.......2006-08-05

This is the only mass-produced compilation by this group and it doesn't give them justice. Los Shakers were a south american band that not only followed in the Beatles footsteps, they were the "Unofficial Other Fab Four", yet they still had originality. They were music idols throughout South America, but ignored by the rest of the World. After all, why settle for a south american copy when you can have the "veddy british original". That doesn't mean oldies compilers like Rhino or Sundaze should ignore Los Shakers. There's more justified 32-track compilation called "Por Favor". When it comes to getting a copy of that cd, lets just say it might be easier to see the Stones Live.

3 out of 5 stars Great band, great songs, ok compilation..........2006-02-08

Los Shakers had an amazing run of great, self-penned tunes in the vein of A Hard Day's Night or Help! (or even Revolver), but this compilation doesn't really have any of the great stuff (with the exception of a couple of tunes.) Buy the "Por Favor!" compilation on Ace Records/Big Beat, or hunt down the original albums (all 3 Original Latin American albums are excellent!)

    2 out of 5 stars A Uruguayan Fab 4 they ain't! .......2005-11-03

Actually there is only one cover in this compilation, Del Shannon's "Keep Searchin'" which is pretty decent only because it's a great song. The rest of the tracks are fairly mediocre attempts at capturing some Beatles' magic. None of the tunes comes close to achieving this.

Perhaps the compilation suggested by the previous reviewer is better. I doubt whether it could be any less exciting.

    3 out of 5 stars los shakers-grandes exitos.......2005-07-08

hmmm... mostly covers , pretty decent but if you get the chance find los shakers-por favor cd or any of the three lps they did.

      5 out of 5 stars Gracias Violeta.......2005-04-10

I first learned about Violeta Parra when I read her poetry in Woman Who Has Sprouted Wings: Poems by Contemporary Latin American Women Poets. I was both struck with the poems and the circumstances of her life. Besides being a gifted writer, singer and musician, she painted and wove tapestries known in Chile as Arpilleras and was the first Latin American artist welcomed at the Louvre. A very accomplished woman she nonetheless committed suicide in Santiago in 1967 at age 50.

When I found out she had CDs available I bought Las Ultimas Composiciones, Last Works. It is an excellent collection of 14 songs ranging from haunting lyricism to driving resistance. Wanting to find another recording of Gracias a la Vida, Thanks to Life, and hear more of this remarkable woman's work, I looked at the other CDs available but found they duplicated much of what I already had on Las Ultimas. Grandes Exitos, Greatest Hits, had the least duplication so I bought it. After listening to it, I listened to it again and again. What a different side of Violeta. The melodies lighter and her voice more innocent. If you like Latin American folk music but have never heard of Violeta, I think you will fall in love when you hear her. This CD makes an ideal introduction to her work. Mr. Micocci's excellent review, which follows, documents some very important aspects of her life.

5 out of 5 stars Nice little selection.......2004-11-28

This is a nice, if necessarily somewhat limited, selection of a dozen of Violeta Parra's earlier recordings, mostly from the period between her career as a duet with her sister Hilda, singing the popular music of the day in the dives or "boliches" of Santiago, and her perhaps better known latter period of more socially engaged work. Only one song in this collection, "Y arriba quemando el sol", is more or less politically oriented - it also seems to be the latest of these recordings; the others are a mix of folkloric songs and her own compositions assimilating the different styles of folk music she had learned from her parents as a child and on her travels and investigations throughout the length and breadth of Chile. There's also one song, "El hijo arrepentido", with text by her brother, the famous poet Nicanor Parra.

More people than ever today seem to be recognizing Violeta's importance as a pioneer of the Nueva Canción movement in Chile and her influence on other singer/songwriters throughout Latin America as well; perhaps many of her fans today aren't as familiar with the crucial role she played in preserving much of the folklore of Chile at a time when it was suffering sore neglect. Violeta, sometimes along with several of her children, spent a period of about 15 years, by her reckoning, traveling throughout the various regions of Chile collecting the music, stories, and other aspects of folklore and culture that were in real danger of disappearing as the last survivors of earlier generations passed away. With the influence first of England and then of the U.S. on Chile (as well as other parts of Latin America) and the advent of media such as radio and cinema, young people lost interest in carrying on the tradition of their elders - witness the advent of what was known in Latin America as the "Ye ye ye" movement in the 1960s (you can surely guess how that sobriquet originated). In 1957, Violeta and her children Carmen Luisa and Ángel moved to Concepción in the south of Chile where, under contract from the Universidad de Concepción, she began extensive investigation and preservation of this disappearing culture heritage; she also founded the Museo de Arte Popular. With her portable tape recorder, guitar, writing material, etc., she was personally responsible for saving a vast amount of folklore that was no longer known by more than a handful of old-timers in many cases; in addition to arranging and recording a large number of the songs she had collected, she also published a bilingual (Spanish and French) edition of "Popular Poetry of the Andes" in Paris, in 1965, and an article of hers, "Cuentos folklóricos" appeared posthumously in "Atenea", No. 423, Universidad de Concepción, 1970.

Three of the songs in this collection are drawn from the vast store of folklore compiled by Violeta: the ribald and irreverent "El sacristán" and the two classics, "Ausencia" and "Qué pena siente el alma", here in a version with accordion that gives it a sort of Paris street music feel; if I'm not mistaken, it and "Casamiento de negros" are the versions recorded in Paris around 1956 rather than the earlier single versions put out by Odeón in Santiago in 1953, and the sound quality on these recordings is somewhat better. I believe some of the other songs could also be from those Paris recording sessions, but it's hard to tell - Violeta recorded a number of these songs more than once, and there's an unfortunate absence of production notes on this CD; the fact that this compilation was released by EMI Odeón SAIC doesn't really clarify matters, either. All in all, though, it's a pleasing set of mostly lighter-mood songs from Violeta.

When I listened the version Ode to Joy with this orchestra director I decided to get it because this is a piece of real good performance. In the past I got a cd of Waldo de los Rios but Ode to Joy was not in it until I finally found it now. That was the only reason I decided to buy this CD. In this cd you will enjoy "las bodas de fígaro" too; this is another music diamond and you can not miss it!

I found an old 78rpm of Lolita Torres and remembered how I loved it as a kid. This gem of a collection is a great showcase of her voice. She was an Argentinian singer actress who was very popular in Russia. This collection contains that 78 hit and many others.

Nice! If you like old stuff in Spanish! the recording quality is so so but is not that important. The music is great.
