About the Artist
Mal Barsamian currently residing in Marlboro, Massachusetts, this young man is one of the most talented Armenian musicians to play today on the East Coast. A master clarinet player, Mal performs extensively on the East Coast with popular Armenian and Middle Eastern ensemble's. A master's student from the New England Conservatory of Music, Mal's special talents were focused on classical guitar. Inspired by his father Leo who played the oud at home which was Mal's first taste of Middle Eastern music. Playing his first band job at the age of four with his father, Mal continues to dazzle audiences with his versatility on the clarinet, oud, guitar and dumbeg. His first album for ARP is Mystical Veil, released Spring '97.

This CD is filled to capacity with 74minutes of middle eastern music played on traditional instruments (clarinet, oud, darbuka, and kanun) each by virtuosos in their own field. Together they create a synergy of arabesque harmony. There's no reason to complain that you won't be getting your money's worth for that. To provide a background for this small ensemble finger cymbols and bass guitar also join in some selections. Not a belly dancer or care? You don't need to be a dancer to enjoy this. If you can't dance listen nevertheless to the ethereal wail of Mal's clarinet or the strains on oud and kanun. You will still float from your chair to swirl in trance just short of the ceiling.

A reader wrote that it deserved 1 star and it is not Armenian music. Well, it never said it was Armenian music! That is no reason to bash it - it is a great piece of work. It is an excellent album of Middle Eastern bellydance music performed by Mal and Ara - who I saw play live a few years ago at an Armenian weekend. They are Armenian, great performers, but the album deserves a 5 star for their excellent renditions of traditional music.

There was nothing Armenian about the music on this CD. It is 100% Arabic and it should not be filed in the Armenian section despite the fact that the musicians are Armenian by name. It might deserve 5 stars but not as Armenian music.
