5 out of 5 stars Best Irish Music.......2007-07-13

Gaelic Storm may be the best Irish folk-rock band to hit the US in recent memory

5 out of 5 stars A 60 yr old groupie !!!.......2007-07-01

I have learned that it is indeed possible to wear out a CD. Several years ago, my youngest son loaned me a copy of the first Gaelic Storm CD - thinking I might enjoy the music. I loaded it in my car CD player to humor him as we drove back from dinner. I am now in the process of replacing two cds that I have just worn out...perhaps it is my careless storing in the car....!

I have seen them in concert 4 times, own all but two CDs (I still have two of his and decided I should actually buy my own) I also have the DVD which is a wild show, but mild compared to their live concerts. I miss Ellery, who is on maternity leave. This is my favorite CD in total...but I still enjoy every single cut on every CD!!!!!

I hope that in the coming year I can take my oldest grand daugther to see them in concert. A new fan is born!

You can't go wrong buying any of the Gaelic Storm CDs!

4 out of 5 stars Tons of energy!.......2007-03-15

We saw Gaelic Storm in concert last weekend in Minneapolis and it was a great time-these "lads" have energy and charm to spare! Lots of fun songs on this album and the more traditional instrumentals are very well played.

5 out of 5 stars Gaelic Storm's Best Yet!!!.......2007-01-27

This is easily my favorite of any of the Gaelic Storm cd's I own. I bought it simply on the merits of "Me & the Moon"(Track #2) which I saw them perform live prior to this albums release. Each track is better than the next. My two young daughters sing along with "Kiss Me I'm Irish" (Track #14)every time I play it in the car (Future GS fans.) Highly recommended!!!!! And I suggest anyone that gets the chance see this group in concert. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Just as they said.......2007-01-19

I saw Gaelic Storm in concert in Northern VA and even though I arrived at the concert tired and moody, their music lifted my spirits. I bought 2 CDs from Amazon as Christmas presents for family members who had recently visited Ireland. We listened to the CD most of Christmas week. We especially love "Kelly's Wellies".

Remember the music that was playing during the steerage party in Titanic? That was Gaelic Storm, who on their self-titled debut present an engaging mix of traditional music, dance music, and songs, all performed with energy and enthusiasm. The album opens with "Hills of Connemara," a fast-paced tune with a long instrumental section before the vocals begin, thus giving you a taste of the considerable musical talent present in this group. "Bonnie Ship the Diamond/Tamlinn" is a fast, almost breathless piece with plenty of dramatic phrasing, while "The Farmer's Frolic" has a swinging shuffle feel. Particularly engaging are the strongly rhythmic "Rocky Road to Dublin/Kid on the Mountain" and the energetic closer "The Road to Liskeard," but it's all strong material that reminds one at times of early Chieftains recordings. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very cool irish music.......2007-01-23

If you wanna get into irish music, this is a great place to start. They really capture the energy and the irish, dancin' joy of life, you can almost be in the pub. One of the more excellent traditionally celtic bands, of today.

4 out of 5 stars Foot tappin' and head noddin' music.......2006-11-10

I bought this CD after returning from a vacation to Ireland in Aug. It definitely reminds me of a great trip. I only wish I had the talent to join in one of the music seisiuns that you find in every Irish pub (the musicians never buy their own Guinness!).

5 out of 5 stars The most rollickin' good time.......2006-03-24

This album will not disappoint you, if you buy it new or used. Referred to as "the steerage band" for the movie Titanic, these guys do not disappoint. You'll understand why that particular scene was so charged with happy energy--it's because these guys made an album so estatically enthusiastic for life you can't help but enjoy yourself.

It's audio Prozac. Give it a whirl--you won't regret it. If for nothing else, it contains the best version of Johnny Jump Up I've ever heard, and the Bonnie Ship the Diamond.

4 out of 5 stars Gaelic Storm.......2005-10-11

Gaelic Storm is a delightful band. I love the CD, and, should you get a chance to see them in concert, do so.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BAND!.......2005-08-06

Wow! This group is so talented! I was lucky enough to catch them live a couple years ago and have loved everything they've done!

I highly recommend all of their cd's and GO SEE THEM LIVE!!!! It will be well worth your time and money....it's a great musical performance and they have great sense of humors to boot!

Following their gig as steerage band in mega-blockbuster The Titanic, their acclaimed self-titled debut disc, and a continuous tour throughout North America, the U.K., Japan, and France, Gaelic Storm offer up the enticing reels, boisterous jigs, and sweet melodies of Herding Cats. Beginning with the rousing "Drink the Night Away," the quintet marries fiddle, guitar, accordion, harmonica, and bodhran with the African djembe, the group's signature vocals, and a spirit of merriment. Previously a favored pub band in Santa Monica, California, the ensemble, whose members hail from places as diverse as Ireland, Zambia, England, and the U.S., manages to preserve the intimacy of a small show while infusing the recording with robust zeal and exceptional musicianship. "O-Mahonny's" stars a flamenco-jazz-flavored guitar and accordion intro, while "Hewlett's Set," "Western Lilt," and "Titanic Set" cajole the listener to frolic on the dance floor and "She Was the Prize" evokes starry-eyed romance. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-12-08

OK, I don't think this CD can actually be called Celtic music; Irish maybe, but not Celtic. It lacks some of the dreamy quality of good Celtic music but it's a ton of fun! The only reason I'm giving it four stars is because it's impossible for me to drive to. The songs make me feel like dancing and that's a little bit hard in a car.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Irish fun.......2005-08-21

I picked this CD up by chance one day, and ever since it has been one of my all-time favorites. I listen to it in the car all the time. I'm a fan of Celtic music in general, but even if you're not into Celtic this CD is a lot of fun to listen to. It's not purely Celtic or Irish (although it does have it's share of jigs), but it'll keep you loving it and moving to it anyway. There's a lot of fiddle and guitar that work together very well.

Tracks I particularly like are Breakfast at Lady A's, The Devil Went Down to Doolin, and the Park East Polkas. There's some fabulous accordion work in that last; I'd never heard a dancing accordion before but this track made a believer out of me.

In short, if you're in a lively mood this is absolutely perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Celebration!!!.......2004-04-15

This cd is not bad at all. They sound a lot better than most artists from Ireland who have gone pop. Celtic music at it's best! Makes me want to riverdance around my living room without stopping for breathe! Gaelic Storm rocks!

4 out of 5 stars A lively romp.......2002-12-03

As a lot of people probably did, I bought my first GS disc (this one) after hearing them on the "Titanic" track (which I bought because it was composed by James Horner, but I digress). I enjoy Irish-pub style music anyway, and here is plenty of it, delivered with spirit and verve. The band isn't quite so good when it moves into the contemplative, which is why I rate it at four stars, but for music that will make your feet twitch, they're right up there.

4 out of 5 stars Herding Cats.......2002-01-05

I think this is a decent album -- stronger on the traditional music, with a fun, party/pub feel, weaker on the often somewhat silly "original" pieces. The energy projected by Gaelic Storm live doesn't quite come through, but it's still an enjoyable CD.

Reviewers may be interested to know that this band was in existence for *years* before the film Titanic came out; they used to play every Sunday at O'Brian's in Santa Monica. They're no more or less "commercial" than any other band.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice and beautiful music that grows on you .......2006-11-10

This is my first Connie Dover purchase and I can't wait to buy all the rest of her CDs. How could this artist's beautiful voice and delivery not be in the mainstream. Thank you again Accuradio/Radiocelt! I love Connie's story telling--her voice is so clear that you can understand every word she sings! The Holland Handkerchief, Shady Grove and Fear An Bhata all impress in different ways. Ned of the Hill is a special song that may not be your favorite at first but gets better and better each time you hear it. La Fontaine is sung in french and is emotional and touching--the harmonics are haunting. Connie's supporting musical cast compliment her vocal presentation perfectly.

This is the kind of music that grows on you and just gets better and better with each listen. Connie, when is your next CD coming out?

5 out of 5 stars breath-taking.......2006-07-04

Connie Dover is one of the best celtic singers I have had the pleasure to listen to. I loved the album. I was soothing as well as uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07

Here is a wonderful voice, full of purity and presence, singing 11 traditional Irish, Scottish and American songs on 60 minutes of music. This means the songs are longer than the usual 3-minutes-and-out you find on the radio. But frankly I didn't even notice, they are as long as they need to be (except the sweet traditional country tune "Shady Grove", which could be longer).

Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.

Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.

If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.

4 out of 5 stars Love Connie Dover's voice..........2005-07-19

...but haven't gotten into the album yet- in part due to not listening to it enough. I was hoping for a more atmospheric sound as on "Cantus" or "Ubi Caritas" so I think it may take me a while to get used to her more traditional stylings on this album. The country number is neat- a different touch. "Fear an Bhata" is a great opener to the album.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed.......2003-12-30

I still haven't found a Celtic artist I like as much as Connie Dover. Her voice is beautiful, and she never has weak moments. Her diction is perfect, as is her intonation. The instrumental accompaniment always enhances the mood of the song- from piano to fiddle to uillean pipes. Her songs are a nice variety of the older and newer, some with lyrics or melodies she has written herself. The harmonies are beautiful, particularly in La Fontaine. I can't say which of her albums is my favorite, but it might be this one. I listen to all of them frequently.

4 out of 5 stars Funeral Bagpipes.......2007-02-19

Purchased this CD looking for funeral music to play during military funerals for the Patriot Guard Riders. Music was satisfactory altho the selections are rather short, however, the duration doesn't make a difference to me since they are recorded on an MP3 player that I use on the motorcycle and can be played over and over.

A sequel to Celtic Voices, Gaelic Voices is a 14-song collection culled from Green Linnet Records' most engaging and enduring artists of Irish and Scottish descent. This volume, squarely focused on the Gaelic tongue, includes relative old timers like The Bothy Band and the ever-updated Cherish the Ladies, modern Celtic mainstays Capercaillie, and neotraditionalists Altan, as well as innovative newcomers, Kila. Evoking the ancient lure and charm of the Isles, these tunes are a mixed bag of cloth workers' (waulking) songs, frolicsome mouth music, and ballads of both history and romance. Especially lovely is Relativity performing "Siun Ni Dhuibhir," a traditional broken-hearted ditty cloaked in a swirling arrangement of synthesizers, enhanced with clavinet, whistles, guitar, violin, and vocals. Also notable are contributions from Niamh Parsons and Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny. Perhaps redundant for serious enthusiasts of the genre, Gaelic Voices is a boon for newbies and casual listeners. --Paige La Grone

This is not some junk album capitalizing on the craze for all things Celtic. This is some of the hottest, most creative music from several of Scotland and Ireland's best bands. Varied, ecclectic, and strong in every count. Many of the Scots and Irish Gaelic words are included, which is an added bonus. If you like Mary Jane Lamond or Ashley MacIsaac, you'd be mad to miss this one.

Whether you are just beginning to explore Celtic music or you are a seasoned listener, this album is a must have. Groups like Altan, Cherish the Ladies, and the Bothy Band have set the standards for contemporary Celtic music. This is a great compilation of all the good stuff in many of our existing cd collections.
