Wow - they blew me away!!!.......2007-07-30

I went to a Martina McBride concert in Las Vegas on July 27, 2007. I had no idea or cared who was opening for her. This happened to be the band opening for her. They were AWESOME!! There were only 3 of them - one of the female singers just had a baby, so she was not performing that night. Didn't matter, they still sounded great! I am here on Amazon right now buying 2 of their CDs. You will not regret buying this CD, even if you've never heard them before!

Great Musicianship and Awesome Vocals!!!!.......2007-06-19

This album is a real gem! I first was exposed to this group through watching them do "Good As Gone" on Nashville Star last season. Prior reviews which criticize their similarity to Fleetwood Mac are really unfair to both LBT and Fleetwood Mac. Yes, they were definitely influenced by Fleetwood Mac, but they are extremely talented in their own right! The vocal talent and musicianship is first rate!

My one criticism (which is minor) involves a certain similarity of the first three songs on the album. In other words, there is a very similar vibe in a number of songs such as Good As Gone, Boondocks, and Bones...(Tryin' to Find A Reason - also similar vibe - is later in the album song order).

There is some great guitar work which includes some very impressive Dobro work from Jerry Douglas. This album is definitely worth getting!

Like Ray Charles used to say, "Country music artist tell great stories." I'm slowly becoming more of a contemporary country fan. And I stress; contemporary. The first time I heard 'Bring it on Home, I thought, "I kind of like that song." A good friend let me listen to the CD and I was hooked. 'The Road to Here,' is a fun piece of work; welcome to the family!

Okay, so I'm totally re-writing & re-submitting my rating of this album. I went to a "Little Big Town" Concert and was blown away. They were incredible and I own them a huge apology for only giving them three stars the first time around. The harmonies were amazing...so, I've gone back and listened to the album & deemed myself delerious in relation to my first review. The four singers are perfectly balanced and the songs are fun. No wonder they won big Country Music Awards for this album. So, ignore my first rating and buy the album.

J.J. Cale penned two of Eric Clapton's career-defining solo hits, "Cocaine" and "After Midnight." And since Clapton has often fashioned his persona in a WWJD manner (what would J.J. do?), this collaboration is long overdue. But despite the rather slick production and long list of guest backing musicians (including four bassists, four drummers, five other guitarists, and three percussionists), The Road to Escondido is still dominated more by Cale than Clapton. The relatively reticent Okie wrote 11 of the 14 tracks, and it's his low-key soufflé of blues, jazz, and country that shapes and directs the disc's tone, with Clapton along for the ride. The opening "Danger" sets the dusky mood as the duo rides a typical Cale swamp groove that gives way to a tightly wound Slowhand solo. They trade lead vocals on a lovely version of the after-hours jazz blues classic "Sporting Life Blues," and the ubiquitous John Mayer makes an impressive appearance on the subtle blues of "Hard to Thrill."

Clapton hasn't sounded this relaxed or involved in his own material for years. The traditionally laid-back, if not quite snoozy, Cale responds with a comparatively energized performance, likely due to the high-profile company. When the two harmonize on the mid-tempo foot tapper "Anyway the Wind Blows," the result is so natural and spontaneous it's a shame these two didn't join forces earlier. On paper, it appears that Cale has the most to gain from partnering with an established superstar, but the fact is this collaboration yields Eric Clapton's most engaging and contagious roots-rock release in a long time. --Hal Horowitz

Finally, an album I can use for cruisin' in the car, or dance to if the mood strikes! Cale's and Clapton's styles are wonderfully complimentary. Sure, maybe the album is a bit reminiscent of the '70s, and doesn't explore new territory, but there was lot of FINE and fun music that came out then, which made us SMILE. It's great these two legends chose to reiterate that feeling, including other notables to team up with them.

Eric Clapton has made it thru much in the past 40 years: drugs and alcohol, personal tragedy, and horrible 80's synthesizers. This CD is just plain good-it doesn't try to be something it's not, and Clapton doesn't have to prove he's a guitar god anymore. J.J. Cale writes some good bluesy rock songs and together they sound great. The addition of Dereck Trucks on slide guitar is terrific, as is Billy Preston on the organ. This recording is not "slick" or "overproduced" as some have said-it sounds smooth, clear and accurate. I have a feeling that this CD will receive regular playing time on my stereo for many, many years.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

After the more experimental themes and misanthropic bit players populating his prior album, I Love Everybody, the songs on this superb 1996 set return to the more affable, earnest, but still knotty balance established by Lyle Lovett on his first four albums. He spins amiable yarns about his preferred headgear ("Don't Touch My Hat") and larger-than-life love objects (the one-eyed "Fiona"), sways hilariously through the backfired seductions of the samba-paced "Her First Mistake," and swings buoyantly through "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)," then ropes the equally droll Randy Newman into a tongue-in-cheek duet on "Long Tall Texan." In between, he sneaks a fresh string of dark love songs ("Private Conversation," "I Can't Love You Anymore") that sustain his formidable standards. Forget the forced issue of his putative ties to "new country": Lovett is simply one of the best American singer-songwriters extant, whether playing raconteur, philosopher king, or wounded romantic. --Sam Sutherland

The man with the ten gallon hat.......2007-06-27

It doesn't get any better than this, all the irony and wit one has come to expect from Lyle Lovett wrapped around 12 swinging songs that captures the border spirit of Texas. The ensembles vary from song to song, bringing in horns on That's Right (You're Not from Texas). But for the most part, there is a lean simplicity to the arrangements, capturing different feelings on each of the songs. The Road to Ensenada may just be his best album, but of course Lovett fans have their personal favorites.

I like Lyle Lovett. I don't know that this is my favorite of his albums but it doesn't matter; it's still a good album. It's more "pop" sounding and less weird than some of the others, but that's probably OK, too.

I'm a bit mystified by those who insist on complaining that Lyle has no roots and is just exploiting earlier musical traditions. I think there are very few country musicians (country to any degree at all) who are more honest about their music. He's not trying to sound like Lefty Frizzell! I don't believe he ever said he was. I love Lefty, too (and Hank, and Robert Johnson, and Son House, and Mississippi John Hurt, and a lot of other "authentic" musicians), but Lefty and Lyle are, in many respects, apples and oranges. You don't have to choose; you're allowed to enjoy them all, so why pigeonhole?

A friend played this CD for me and I fell in love with it. Bought it the next day and it's one of my all time favorites. Before now I had never paid much attention to Lyle, but he's gotten my attention and I WILL buy more of his CDs. Highly recommended!!!

I've been listening to Country Music over 50 years. Going back to Frizzell, my all-time favorite, and up to the present. And I am a SONGWRITER, with my own recording studio and 40 songs copyrighted so far.
Lovett is very talented, and has done much fine material. But really I cannot fathom how this particular CD got 5 stars from everyone else, unless they simply like Mr. Lovett and are trying to help him sell CDs.

On my "Best of the Best" shelf.......2006-11-07

I have been pulling this CD out of my shelf of a few chosen favorites for 10 years now. I caught a live performance by chance in 1997 while Lyle was promoting this CD. It was electrifying and unforgettable. While we know the inspiration for most of these songs was not a happy one for Lyle, he sure knows how to make lemonade from lemons. (Many artists do some of their best work by channeling their grief into their art.) Whatever his inspiration, this collection of tunes is a true testament to the man's talent. Pick it up. Great listening on a long drive, on the front porch, by the fire... I promise you'll enjoy plucking it from your shelf for years to come.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I loved the movie and the music. However, I'm very disappointed to discover that I cannot get the CD to copy to my iPod. This is a pet peeve of mine - I buy the music, I should get to listen to it on whatever device I choose.

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12

If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.

I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.

Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).

I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.

My favorite Rea album, with (in my opinon) one of his strongest collection of songs. Usually you will find some "fillers", but I love every track, with the possible exception of the last (Tell me there's a Heaven), which is a little sappy for my taste. I was introducted to this album many years ago in a bar in Houston, where they played (no surprise) "Texas"...this still rates as one of the best tracks on the album (along with the title track), but there are many joys to be had here....listen to "Warm & Tender Love" and "Daytona". All in all, not much to dislike here

Chris Rea's "Road to Hell" music CD.......2006-02-19

This album is an excellent piece of music, one of my favorite actually out of 100s of CD I own. Its style is difficult to pin in any well defined category, not really rock, not really jazz, no really blues and all of the above at the same time. But what's extraordinary about it is that even though it is probably 20 years old, that music could have been composed today or probably tomorrow as well. There is something powerfully universal about it. Definitely a strong mood music for the night, even better, for driving long hours into the night.

A collection-item for Baywatch-fans !.......2004-10-06

Also for Baywatch-fans this CD from Chris Rea is a worth recommendation to their collection. The CD contains the song "I just wanna be with you" that was used for the Baywatch-episode "Island of romance" (1992 / season 3). While hearing this "warm" song, you'll remember those female housekeepers cleaning and cooking for Mitch and Hobie.

For 2006's Acoustic Tour, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke reworked a selection of the defining songs that embody their two decades together and were joined onstage, for the first time ever, by a full band. Led by guitarist Steve Walsh, Andy Bell's vocals and Vince Clarke's guitar, mandolin and melodica were joined by an array of musicians and instruments that included the pedal steel, autoharp and banjo. Filmed live on Erasure's 'Union Street' Acoustic Tour in May 2006 in Nashville, Tennessee at the Ryman Auditorium (once home of the infamous Grand Ole Opry with a stage that once hosted a teenage Elvis Presley), the DVD features never before seen versions of hits and live favorites such as 'Oh L'Amour', 'Love To Hate You', 'Stop!', 'Blue Savannah', 'Victim of Love' and 'Sometimes' as well as a short film, 'The Road to Union Street'. We saw this show when it came to San Francisco, fantastic show from a long time favorite band of ours. Great new versions of some classics.
We bought the studio version as well as the import concert from this same show but this CD is the best of the three versions I like both the prior versions but the studio album lacks the energy of a live show and the import live cd from an earlier concert has a weaker vocal performance from Andy. His voice is much stronger on this cd plus this cd has "Breathe" from the Nightbird cd which is not on either prior release.

Better Than What I Expected!.......2007-04-12

I just got this cd in the mail yesterday and I LOVED IT. I've been a fan of Erasure since 1987 but I have to admit that I got disconnected from their music when they did the CDs "Other People's Songs" and "Nightbird". At that time, I thought their songs started to sound the same. This new CD is such a refreshing change from all that electronic stuff the band is known for. Just imagine classic Erasure songs redone with different arrangements in the context of country music. I know it sounds crazy but the band pulled it off. Go to YouTube and check out some video clips from their acoustic shows. Too bad MTV Unplugged is not around anymore. Erasure could have done that show and blown everybody away.

After hearing a excerpt from these guys CD at Ozzfest I was intrigued. So upon returning home from the show I couldn't believe Amazon had their CD for so cheap so what was I to do.... I bought it. If Trivium's latest CD had a little brother Sanctity's "Road to bloodshed" is it. I love the new Trivium, back to good ole' classic hard metal and these guys show great strength in the same field. Great find and can't beat the price for this CD!

I saw Sanctity on Gigantour last year, remembered I liked them, but forgot why in the time while I waited for their first CD to actually come out.

It's basically a cross between a good Swedecore band (Unearth, Trivium, etc.), maybe a little bit of Avenged Sevenfold, and a lot of Testament. And maybe something else I haven't identified, yet. In any case, it's very cool.

Thrash metal, North Carolina-style .......2007-04-26

After viewing their first music video Zeppo a year ago, there was no question that there'd be a lot of buzz about Sanctity. A year and several shows later touring with Trivium, Black Label Society, Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Arch Enemy, Into Eternity, Opeth and many others, their debut album is finally out. First off, I gotta say that this cd breathes old school thrash in the same vein as Anthrax, Megadeth, and Testament. Not that there is anything wrong with Trivium's last album The Crusade (I liked it), but this may be for some of those that felt disappointed. There's a lot to like about this record. Nothing real fancy. Just skull-crushing metal.
