This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

I just heard portions from this CD on NPR's Echoes program on my way to work on a cold dreary Saturday morning and the music by these guys made my day - if you need something to lift your spirits, transport you to a place of peace and encourage you to appreciate the beauty around you, this is the prescription you need. ...heard this album for the first time back in 1980 and it blew me away, never thought "jumping jack flash" or "light my fire" could sound that great on sitar, apart from the more mellow stuff on side 1 (old LP version which i still possess) and the more traditional/classical tracks on side 2!! and the fact is that this was his first album...!! awesome!!

If you have ever thought that western and Indian music would sound fantastic together, this is the album to listen to. Ananda Shankar blends sitar, guitar, bass, electronics seamlessly in these tunes from the beat generation and from his homeland. A smooth sitar replaces the voice, while western instruments provide backings to rival the best beats and sounds of the time. Ananda's musical heritage (he is Ravi Shankar's nephew) is evident in the snappy arrangements and the many exotic sounds. Moving off planet Earth recently, let's hope he's in the best gig in the sky. Although there are a few imitators, this is the one you'll think of as how fusion should be written.

this is a really cool funky and naturally transcendental album. the sitar playing is beautiful and even very fast and complex at times funkying it up throughout the whole album, Ananda Shankar is a unique master of this instrument playing with immense feeling and originality. the rest of the musicians are really sick too, the drums and bass are really tight. it seems they were all immensely feeling these songs during recording. very creative album, and i love the last track when the Indian singing choir comes on for the ride to make an epic ending to close the album with. sick electric indian funk!

Interesting music interestingly sung.......2007-02-01

Much of this vocal music is from an era with which I am unfamiliar. It ranges from the work of Hildegarde of Bergen (1098-1179) to Handel (1685-1759); obviously, this album covers much territory! Emma Kirkby displays her virtuosity on this CD. The notes from the CD say that "One of the favorite adjectives used by critics. . .is the word 'celestial.'" At a later point, the notes speak of Kirkby further: "There is a freshness, an openness, an honesty about her voice. . ."

Some comments on works randomly selected.

Monteverdi's "Confitebor tibi, Domine." Here, Kirkby displays a clean light voice. She exhibits a spirited "Gloria Patri" with some spare but interesting ornamentation.

Campion's "Now hath Flora robbed her bowers." This cut shows off to good effect the agility in her voice.

John Dowland, "Flow not so fast, ye fountains." Here is displayed her smooth voice; her singing flows smoothly from one note to the next. There is a poignancy in her singing on this piece.

Guillaume de Machaut, "Foy porter." She treats the redoubtable de Machaut well; his works are some of the best of his time. This is smoothly song and does his work justice.

Hildegarde of Birgen, "Columba aspexit." This is the oldest composition on this CD by far. The work is spare, but well sung. There is a hypnotic quality to the work and Kirkby sings it well.

Lawes, "The Lark." Again, nice agility of her voice is displayed.

Other compositions on this CD are by Purcell, J. S. Bach, Sigismondo d'India, and Handel.

All in all, a nice sampling of the work of Emma Kirkby. I was not much familiar with her work before listening to this CD, but I am delighted that I did purchase this work.

The marriage of skill and magic.......2007-01-12

Ms. Kirby's voice is limpid, exquisitely pitched, strong, and yet beautifully refined. Her command of her voice is extraordinary, with phrasing, delicate embellishments and what I think are some vocal cadenzas, all showing the skill and craft of an artist who has brought her artistry to its highest state. But she makes her artistry sound so easy, so natural: nothing of bravura, nothing forced here. The selections are wonderfully chosen; together, they give us the whole range of early to late Baroque, in every mood. Each listening refreshes the spirit. What an artist!

There is no such thing as too much Emma Kirkby.......2002-07-16

The only defect in this disk is that it isn't a three or four disk set. Some people don't appreciate her beautiful voice and I feel sorry for them. I first heard her voice live in a concert here in Ann Arbor in December of 1980 and she stunned me. The memory of her beautiful voice still lives in my mind and heart.

Well, this disk gives us 18 selections from a number of different composers from the Baroque. Every one of them is a treasure and has its own charms. I can't pick a favorite, but I can say that each of these pieces show off her voice and singing style in different ways.

Yes, I wish she had included more Purcell and something even nicer than what we have on track 3, but what would I give up? Well, that is where I say we need this to have been a two or three disk collection.

You won't go wrong with this wonderful disk!

emma's pure and magical voice........2000-10-16

This cd shows Emma's versatility as a Baroque and early music performer. Her pure voice matches the music so well. I really enjoy the song "You meaner beauties of the night." This is only one among many cd's which shows Emma's great voice. I highly recommend the Emma Kirkby collection.

Voice of an Angel!.......1999-07-20

One of the most beautiful angelic voice in the world! But I don't think this collection shows her best recording pieces.

Album Description

Some of the world's greatest artistic and musical treasures followed the famed Silk Road, the great trade route of Central Asia, from India through China and eventually on to Japan. Over the centuries, this migration has left its mark on the musical traditions of about half of the world's population; yet despite the recent interest in world music, much of the music of the Far East is still unfamiliar to Western listeners.

Asia Music is an unusual primer of Eastern works. The traditions of India, Tibet, China, and Japan are presented side by side with contemporary works that draw on their traditions. Many of the works, both old and new, are surprisingly accessible to Westerners, especially when an ancient piece from an unfamiliar Chinese instrument is heard next to an American piece for the same instrument; or a contemporary Chinese piece for familiar orchestral instruments.

The range of music on Asia Music is extraordinary, both historically and sonically. Some pieces are over a thousand years old; others were written within the last decade. Instruments whose techniques and repertoires have developed over centuries are heard, such as the Indian sitar, the Chinese cheng, and the Japanese koto. But modern instruments and technology have also become important features of contemporary Asian music and these recordings include works that combine traditional Oriental sounds with electronic instruments and processing.

For the casual listener, Asia Music, is the perfect introduction to some of the richest musical traditions in the world. Loathe as anyone should be to reinforce vapid cultural clichés, nothing other than shagadelic truly describes this collaboration between pop sitar player Ananda Shankar (nephew of Ravi) and Sam Zaman, the musician and producer known as State of Bengal. Walking On is a sonic journey back to a time when the sitar's sound automatically signified "psychedelic," a time when composer John Barry's sassy film themes were the ne plus ultra of bachelor-pad sophistication. Shankar (who died shortly after completing the album) plays surf sitar, rock sitar, EZ-listening sitar, and German soundtrack sitar (fans of high-speed jazz-rock sitar, however, are directed to Ashwin Batish). Although Shankar's playing sometimes sounds at odds with Zaman's techno beats, the two make a convincing case for "the '90s is the '60s upside down" argument. --Richard Gehr

i love this CD, and I don't mind the repetitive beats only b/c its more modern than others as badmarsh and shri/ dancing drums.

The great man returns with an explosive yet beautiful mix of east meets west. All the traditional Indian instruments are there with Ananda Ji at his magical best on the sitar, and with backing beats from the UK's Asian Underground scene giants, State of Bengal, this album is a must have for all fans of fusion everywhere. The album opens with the title track, Walking On, which slowly takes your mind away from the real world into the land where Ananda is king and where he controls your mind. From then on you are at his mercy, you have no control through the amazing live recording of the Jungle Symphony right up to the equally amazing live recording of Streets Of Calcutta. Then you wake up and realise that the last hour of your life was the best time of your life. Totally amazing, totally brilliant. Ananda Ji, we look up and salute you and simply say 'thank you'.

If you are looking for only traditional sitar music then just keep on clicking to the Grampa Shankar section because you won't be happy with this CD I bet. Likewise, if you are looking only for old-school 60s psychedelia/70s rock keep on truckin to those respective sections. And if pure 90s technobeats are your only destination then thump on by this one because this CD will only disappoint or confuse you.

BUT if you are looking for something that could somehow combine ALL of those categories then check this CD out! These musicians actually made it work somehow.

- The song "Betelnutters" is, what, Aphex Twin in the Bombay version of Motown?
- "Alma Ata" is, er, Bangladeshi surf-prog-rock with the Beatles playing rhythm?
- "Jungle Symphony" is, hm, Jethro Tull as a whirling mondo-gypsy on too much curry?
- "Tori" makes me want to gallop a horse or do the frug or something. Both?

Anyways, I thought it might get muddy or lose its energy with time but the CD has plenty of great musicianship and compositional complexity to hold up to repeat listenings. And the grooves just don't let go either. I've been having a ball with this cd. Your Mileage May Vary.

State of Bengal by himself is a fantastic DJ and a masterful producer with immense talent. Anand Shankar is a legend and a true master. Here is the only explaination i can offer to explain the terrible mishap of a album...the stars must not have alligned themselves properly thereby bringing bad luck upon both of them. First of all there seems to be no production value what so ever and all songs seem to go completely haywire. The rythems a totally predictable and sometimes annoying. If your having a big party and you need some baground noise which sounds cool yet does not intrude in the coversation the get this CD but otheriwse.....i am sorry.

Here's a absolutely unique disc that marks the passing of an Indian music great who had one foot firmly placed in the history of American rock music as well. Thirty years ago, Ananda Shankar came to California to savor the psychedelic music scene firsthand. The mood for experimentation, perhaps at it's zenith then, found Shankar jamming with Jimi Hendrix, among others. Incredibly hard to find, some of his records have recently been re-released, posthumously. Shankar died at 56 just over a year ago, when he failed to recover after a simple hernia operation. This album had been recently finished, and he was working on the second with this agregation. He was the nephew of Ravi, and the son of India's most renowned dancers. His own wife, Tanushree is herself a choreographer. The artistry and appeal of this disc, which can't help but bring his music to a larger audience, makes his passing all the more heartbreaking. Once again, my hat's off to the forsighted and principled folks at Realworld for expanding the the sights of countless music fans throughout the world with this, and other fine releases. It is, of course, hard to describe music with this many facets, but I'm going to try anyway. First of all, by virtue of it's instrumentation, imbued with an obvious sub-continental sound, it shares an immediate kinship with Indian film music,"filmi". But it's so much more. It doesn't seem as comical, as whimsical as your average soundtrack from India. The arrangements are fantastic, totally captivating. The lineup of instruments is not as crowded as are most filmi albums, and the entire disc is without vocals. This makes it undoubtedly easier on the ears of the average listener in the west. It also captures the spirit of the sixties to some extent and would therefore have been a killer inclusion on the Austin Powers soundtrack. There's also definately an appeal for those who've bought those "cocktail" compilations in recent years. It's very much a viable party album. But with careful listening it's a most interesting recording. The production is nonpareil, no mean feat when so many diverse elements are at work. But, work it does. A little over a decade ago, another sitarist, Ashwan Batish, put out an album called "Sitar Power". A mix of sitar, bass, drum machine, and tabla (also played strikingly by Batish), it tried, I think, to capture this general feel with only limited success. He never made a second effort, and returned to playing Indian classical music, which, thankfully he was also quite good at. His father, by the way, played sitar on the Beatles "Help" album. But, once again, I digress. As if the project wasn't difficult enough already, several tracks are live performances. The production on these cuts are absolutely seamlessly placed amid the studio work and come off brilliantly. It is, all in all, the mother of all ethnic fusion albums. Recently, as asian flavors are becoming more popular in hip-hop and dub music, Some of Ananda's material has been sampled, but here's a chance to hear the undiluted truth. An absolute classic.

Transitional Fossils.......2006-06-13

There is a vast chasm between Ananda's two US-released albums, "Ananda Shankar" (1970) and "Walking On" (1999). The former was kitchy (mostly) rock 'n roll performed on sitar, while the latter was sophisticated Indian dance music featuring modern electronic treatments by State of Bengal, aka Sam Zaman. The two albums just didn't sound like they could be products of the same musician.

In a way, they weren't. We learned in the "Walking On" liner notes that Ananda had worked steadily over these three decades, mostly in the Indian film and television industries. He remained intensely popular in India, releasing a number of records that did very well in his native land but all during this time he was off the US radar.

This two-disc set aims to correct that. Compiled from seven different albums for EMI-India, the tracks are arranged not chronologically but in order from "Ananda Shankar" to "Walking On," showing how his music progressed from a rather primitive 'Western music on Indian instruments' concept to a much deeper and more intriguing fusion of the two cultures.

The seemingly-unbridgable chasm becomes understandable, even logical, and particularly on the second disc some of the transitional steps are fascinating in and of themselves. It's easy to see why he remained popular right up to his untimely heart attack on March 26, 1999.

Anand Shankar - The Fusion Genius.......2006-03-09

There is so much to write about this great sitarist/instrumentalist, but all of a sudden i can't find much to write now! Anand Shankar was probably one of the 'pionners' of what many address it as 'fusion' music! He had a head start on this fusion role wayyyyyyy b4 some other were familiar with this term. I hear so many people going nuts over Ravi Shankar, but i don't think Ravi's mucic is as melodious as Ananda's were!!! Ravi is more widely known; where as, Ananda kept a very low profile. Ananda produced less but Quality cuts. Such a great blend of sitar, guitar, drum, tabla...aah list goes on. Another word, if you are looking for an instrumental cd, i don't think there are too many of this kind! I bought every single cd with his name on it and i'm still looking for more (knowing there aren't any new ones). If you have good ear for the music, i can't see how you can be disappointe by this master piece!!!

Excellent Fusion .......2006-03-08

This is a great companion to the "Ananda Shankar" album. The beats are body movers and it's great to hear more than just the sitar as a lead instrument. The sheer genius of this man shows in his arrangements once again because you hardly notice that the eastern instruments are playing alongside the western ones and you get 60's rock beats as well. Where there is singing it is more like skilled melodic blend rather than solo vocals. The tracks have been cleaned up too to give a clean sound. Who wants to buy scratchy vinal remnants after hearing this?
