Amazon.com essential recording

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic, but not the definitive..........2004-05-20

While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......1999-02-24

The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.

This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all about. From there, you might want to listen to "Different Trains," "Electric Counterpoint" and "Six Marimbas" to get an idea of the pointillistic pulse minimalism that Reich contributed to the world. The earlier material is the more challenging, exploring the subtleties of rythym, phase relationships between sounds and shifting timings. Among these, the new recording of "Four Organs" is just outstanding.

Reich's works, along with the early works of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, form the foundation of an enormous edifice that has grown of music that attempts to return to its essential and hypnotic roots. With this box set, one of those pylons becomes clear.

Steve Reich's music is based around the phase shifting of percussion instruments. Even when he uses a larger ensemble--or a whole orchestra--you can still make out the percussion underneath. It's always there. In The Four Sections he takes a simple theme on the strings, then punctuates the flow with precise, percussive effects. It is very engaging music, some of the best this composer has written. Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ is a tour de force. Once again the percussion rules. Here the organ and voices provide the undercarriage for all sorts of wondrous mallet instruments to flow over the top. --Paul Cook

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars An audience-pleaser.......2001-01-16

A CD intended as an audience-pleaser. Both pieces are Steve Reich saying "Thank you" to his fans & trying to win over a few more, while also advancing his ideas. Four Sections was composed for Michael Tilson Thomas, so this performace will always be the root definitive. That the London Symphony Orchestra performed it so beautifully, as part of a Reich retrospective in 1988 was also a statement.

Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices & Organ (1973), composed for Reich's own popular ensemble, casts an exotic spell; African drumming through the sort of gamelan some imaginary Pythagoreans might have played if they had those kinds of bands. Wonderful, delicate music.

In both works the changes happen fast enough & the music is over almost before you can say "minimalism."

      5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY MOVING.......2000-04-04

It is state of the art avante-garde classical music. The first four tracks, (The Four Sections) were written for orchestra. They are not in the traditional Steven Reich instrumentation, i,e, mallets and percussion, but they are super modern, highly emotionally charged pieces that are my favorites by this composer.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best.......1999-11-28

This CD is a mixed bag. FOUR SECTIONS is Reich's least sucessfull piece. The orchestral writing is uninspired. On the other hand, the Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ - represents the composer at his best. Recorded sound on the latter work is super.

5 out of 5 stars It is very Interesting But It Definatly Grows on you.......1998-12-04

In 1998 The Westerville North Marching Band played The Four Sections for Bands of America contests across the US. None of us liked it at first it was too weird, If you listen to it and appreciate what Steve Reich is trying to do here It is a wonderful Masterpiece. If you don't appreciate what he is trying to di It will Grow on you I promise.

This CD is worth buying just for the Dan the Automator track and the amazing cover of Trust in Me from Disney's The Jungle Book. Too bad there isn't a preview on Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Fun trip to downtempo Bollywood.......2005-04-19

Picked this up somewhere in Asia. It was a blind purchase that sold me because of the familiar western artists like Jah Wobble and Asian Dub Foundation. And a nice surprise. Some very original sounds done in accessible fashion by some people I would have never heard elsewhere. All have some element(s) that make each distinctively Indian without sounding fake. So yes its authentic.

Many will make the crowd move, many will make you smile.

About the only negative for me was that some tracks simply go on too long in a groove that while tasty, really doesn't evolve into anything more than when you first met it. So that is a sort of unimaginative mix that can quickly bore me.

So yes if you are making mixes, this can make great interstitials and some tracks work entirely. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars if you see it get it.......2003-03-26

i recently bought this double disc in toronto. I was just feeling indian music at that time so i bought it and it had a dan the auto mater track. overall its got some chessy dance tracks but overall a great album and as a person who is in to hip hop mainly i loved this album.

        5 out of 5 stars Rejuvenation.......2007-05-23

When listening to this CD, one can feel sound waves traveling in the brain and then passing to the other parts of the body. When I first listened to this CD before going into sleep, I got the feeling that this CD leads to rejuvenation. At that time, I haven't seen the review below. It might be that the 3-D recording of didgeridoo sound stimulate some important structures in the brain, may be pineal gland ?.

5 out of 5 stars Solo Didjeridoo Healing Session.......2005-11-29

This Album is one of the most unique CDs I have heard so far. Very hypnotic! A live healing session. When you close your eyes you can feel the sound playing your body. Paradiso virtually plays up and down your spine, around your head and into your arms and chest. When I listen to healing vibes, I go into a trance like state and when the CD is finished I feel refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated! I would recommend this CD to anyone - especially if one needs healing energy, this is one of the most effective sound healing tools to use.

4 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad.......2001-04-13

I have received the CD today and I put in the CD reader. Some of the tracks are really interesting, some of them are very bad.

I'm not sure if this CD made only for money or it is a real value. Let me lesson the tracks one more time...

Dance version of Moonlight Shadow is REALLY interesting

3 out of 5 stars Boy, is my face red..........2001-03-30

My review of this album closed with this line:

All in all, this is not a collection... but it could have been quite a bit better.

That should have read: All in all, this is not a BAD collection...

OF COURSE, this is a collection! :)

(And to think I faulted the writing in the liner notes. Karmic justice?)

3 out of 5 stars Nice Effort marred by near-misses and total disasters.......2001-03-29

When it comes to cover tunes, I expect the artist doing them to either breathe new life and new aspects into a song or at least transmit excitement for the music in question that (hopefully) inspired them to make the cover. This is particularly true of "tributes," like 'Tubular Vibes' claims to be.

In some cases, the artists (Northern Europeans, based on the accents of the singers) for this album deliver exactly what I expect. In others, they fail to a greater or lesser degree.

Standout pieces are 'Tubular Bells Part 4,' 'Taurus,' 'Jewel in the Crown,' the two 'Incantation' tracks, and the 'Tubular Countdown.' They are nice reworks of Oldfield instrumentals that give a sense of fun and wonder... that make me feel as though the performers love this music as much as I do. 'Jewel in the Crown' is a particular favourite of mine... and I might even like it better than Oldfield's version. ('Jewel' has always stood out in my mind as one of the weaker parts of 'Tubular Bells 2.')

The "unplugged" version of 'Moonlight Shadow' and the straight cover of "To France" (titled 'Get to France' for whatever reason) are excellent reditions of those songs. 'Get to France' in particular has some nice moments.

That's eight out of 13 tracks that I think are excellent. Beyond them, however, there isn't much worth mentioning.

'Guilty' and 'High Place' may be okay... I can't judge them well, because I don't like the Oldfield versions. All I can say is that these are not improvements on the originals. 'High Place' is a lack-luster cover of 'In High Places' and the version of 'Guilty' here has all the weaknesses of the orginal and none of the raw energy.

However, the "dance" version of 'Moonlight Shadow' and 'Five Miles Out' are such crimes against the original songs that I've knocked a full star for them. That might seem a bit steep, but try listening to them next to the original Oldfield versions. The 'dance' version is uneven enough in its beat to even make it tricky for use in techno/rave settings--and while I may be an old fogey by some standards, I CAN tell you that the orignal 'Moonlight Shadow' was plenty dancable. It was played a lot in the club I frequented when the song was a hit--and there are aspects of the track that feel like it was someone's practice effort with the mixing board that accidentially made it onto the released album, with some of the vocals chopping and repeated in particularly pointless ways. Further, the beautiful tune of 'Moonlight Shadow' is close to unrecognizable.

'Five Miles Out' however is the absolute worst on the collection. I might even stray into the territory of hyperbole and say it's the worst cover of a song I've heard, ever. While it was impossible for the performers to demolish the strong tune that's at the heart of 'Five Miles Out,' they did their damndest by laying down a Latin-leaning beat and generally delivering a song about a pilot coming in for a landing during a storm in an astonishingly cheerful fashion. What's worse, the lines spoken by the incoming pilot have been run through a synthesizer and are distorted to the point where the listener can't make out what he is saying. I suppose partly why I dispise this track so is both because I love the Oldfield version so much, but also because I've often wondered what another artist could do with it. The only think they could have done worse with this cover, however, is to have played the main theme on kazoos. (Come to think of it... that might actually have improved it...)

Something else that made me knock off a star was an annoying presence of static on many of the tracks. I at first thought I was having problems with my stereo at home, so I played the disc at my office as well. No... it wasn't my sound system... it's the disc. I can only imagine that there's an engineer out there who thinks that such fuzziness is either Oldfieldy or just 'edgy.'

Finally, while this has little to do with the music, the packaging annoyed me slightly. The liner notes consist of empty rehashes of the 'Tubular Bells' story, something I imagine most of the purchasers of an album like this have already read more than one version of. Worse, the language is clunky in places and the editing is sloppy. That space would have been much better used if each of the recording artists had given us a few sentences about WHY they chose to take the approach of to the tracks they did. It would also have been nice to know why the titles of the songs were changed.

All in all, this is not a bad collection... but it could have been quite a bit better.

2 out of 5 stars Well produce but still disappointing...........2001-03-23

Sorry, but this compilation of MO Remakes doesn't work.

I love most of Mikes work (though I think, he doesn't deliver the same quality nowadays as he did some decade(s) ago) and i like the idea of other artists performing there own variation of his songs...

...but this tribute just sounds to sterile and uninspirational to me. Don't get me wrong: Tubular Vibes is not all bad, but I could easily live without it.

Remember the "Synthesizers Greatest Hits"-Series? If you liked it, go for Tubular Vibes, if not - let it be. I hated those albums, so maybe Tubular Vibes too just isn't meant for an audience like me.

Some of the tracks I liked:

          - The Funkie Tubular Bells - The Red Incantations - The Tubular Countdown

Most tracks were produced by Ulrik Rey Henningsen (web site), the rest seems to be produced by some other danish artists.

If your really interested in MO-Tributes, don't forget to check out the fan-driven "Static 18" Project, which you should find easily on the web...

2 out of 5 stars Mike Oldfield done wrong..........2001-03-18

I would not recommend this album to most Mike Oldfield fans. This is more of a massacre than a tribute. I really disliked most of the tracks on this album. Many, like "The Funky Tubular Bells," were painful to listen to. There were two versions of "Moonlight Shadow," one of Mike's better "pop" pieces, on the CD, and both were equally terrible. "[In] High Places" just doesn't work without Jon Anderson's vocals, and the musical mix is pretty bad to boot. The only tracks that were not too bad were the remixes of "To France" and "Jewel in the Crown"...and these were closer to the originals than any of the other tracks on the CD. "The Tubular Countdown" wasn't bad either...in fact, it's probably the best of the lot, not that that's saying much... ;)

I think that only a rave/dance fan who also happens to be an Oldfield fan could really like this CD. I love Oldfield's work, but I do not like most rave/dance music, so this CD really turned me off. Unless you're into rave/dance, I'd avoid this one.
