A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.

Rififi ideal for fans of classic French "tough guy" movies.......2002-09-30

For those who are enraptured by the Parisian underworld as it was depicted by some of the great auteurs of French cinema during the 50s and 60s, this disc is essential!

Including the themes from such classic movies as Melville's "Bob Le Flambeur" and Truffaut's "Shoot the Piano Player", "Du Rififi Au Cine" allows one the opportunity to recreate the ambience of the French noirs in the comfort of one's own home.

The sound is generally of a very high quality, (though the last track is flawed, perhaps through source tape decay?) and a lavishly illustrated liner note booklet acompanies the CD. In addition, it cannot be forgotten that all tracks have been composed by the main names in French movie music, including Paul Misraki and Georges Delerue.

I found that "Rififi" has inspired me to search out some of the films, from which music has been included, that I had never had reason to see before, and this in itself has been highly rewarding. Films such as Jean Pierre Melville's "Le Doulos" (aka The Finger Man), which stars a young Jean Paul Belmondo, are difficult to find, but absolutely worth the effort.

I honestly cannot reccommend this first disc in the series enough, and I assume that the further compilations would be equally good in dealing with the music of films from later decades. This is the soundtrack to a golden era in French cinema, and is not to be missed.

Good music, good fun.......2003-04-27

This is a very enjoyable CD. It does not include "serious" wind quintet repertoire (very underrated and ignored music, by the way), but many transcriptions of well know tunes, like Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, Bizet's Carmen, Strauss' pizzicato polka (yes) and so on, that they have been playing as bises in their concerts. This is one of the specialities of the Moraguès quintet (thanks to their oboist, David Walter), and the results are amazing. Forget your prejudices about the original scores (which are absolutely respectable, of course) and have a go. There is a lot of good humour all the way along, and a very very skillful playing from all of them, careful tuning and musical phrasing. At this price, it is a bargain, I only regret that the recordings of this group are so difficult to find. Definitely recommended.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

He plays the instrument like no one else, can create an array of timbres, reveal the architecture of a work, and project an expressive range beyond anyone playing the instrument today. Yes, people love to hate him, and yes there are other players who make the instrument sound more "beautiful". Guess what? These debates are normal and certainly not confined to the classical quitar world. I am not surprised that a young guitarist might have problems with him, and feel it necessary to lose perspective on what makes him unique. But as someone who knows a great deal about music from the inside, I feel obligated to say that to start to question his meeting basic "standards of acceptable interpretation" is so way out of line that it is laughable. Fisk's musical training is impeccable--besides the well-known Segovia relationship, he has been a protege of the great harpsichordist and Scarlatti expert Ralph Kirkpatrick - and his intellect formidable. Here is a real musician who has earned the respect and admiration and has collaborated with some of the most revered concert artists of our time. If someone prefers another player, that is his or her perogative (Barruecco is certainly a remarkable guitarist, and has produced some important work). But Fisk is, well, Fisk. Make up your own mind. Just, please, don't miss the forest for the trees.

I won't talk about the paganini, as I already reviewed that album (and it was awful). As for the rest of the works on this disk, anyone who knows anything about classical music or anything about the fundamentals of guitar playing will quickly realize that Fisk falls embarrassingly short on so many levels it's ridiculous. There are certain standards of acceptable interpretation, rhythmic accuracy, cleanliness (there are MISTAKES on this CD!!), and tone quality, all of which Fisk grossly fails to meet. The unfortunate thing is that the guitar community as a whole doesn't seem to care about these things. If Fisk played any other instrument, he would not have a career. If you want to hear these pieces played well, I suggest you try David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, John Williams, Jason Vieaux, Pepe Romero, or Paul Galbraith. The difference between these players and Fisk is obvious.

I've heard Fisk in person three times. The director of the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival said that when Eliot Fisk is coming, he tells him who else will be available that weekend, and lets him suggest the groupings and music. The last time, I heard guitar and harp play a work originally for organ, and guitar and viola play Beaser's Barbara Allen which is on this CD as guitar and flute. Fisk is a great talent, and this CD illustrates it well.

An eclectic mix of electroacoustic works.......2002-09-09

Each year, the American Composers Forum (ACF) produces an audio CD of recent electronic and electroacoustic music by composers from around the world, principally for distribution to radio stations and other recorded music venues. Each of these discs provides a snapshot of the current state of experimental electronic music, as well as a ready-made programme of works for broadcast or performance.

This fifth "Sonic Circuits" CD is the 1997 release from the ACF. One common theme running through most of the works on it is the use of vocal (or voice-like) material as a principal component. Most obviously, this is in the form of speech largely left raw and untreated, as with the spliced and looped radio broadcast samples which make up the entirety of Orchid Spangiafora's "Radios silent", or else the taped telephone conversations of Michael Schell's work, "Jerry Hunt: Song Drape 2", or the snippets of taped interviews juxtaposed with other processed sounds in Katharine Norman's "Hard Cash (and small dreams of change)".

Lawrence Fitts uses a one-minute spoken text by Australian sound poet Chris Mann as the source of his short series of variations, each the result of increasing amounts of processing, whilst a commercial recording by the Hilliard Ensemble provided Colby Leider with the source material for his heavily processed "Veni Creator Spiritus". Robert Normandeau draws on vocal samples of the actors from Odile Magnan's radio adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "Le petit prince"(together with his incidental music for that production) for his engaging piece of 'cinema for the ears', "Le renard et la rose".

Although not featuring real voices as such, both Eirik Lie's "112 Par Sko (112 pairs of shoes)" and Beatriz Ferreyra's "Soufle d'un petit Dieu distrait (The breath of a small, distraught god)" manage to give the impression of voices embedded within them. Eirik Lie's guitar work (commemorating the centenary of the terrible Verdal landslide of 1893 in which 112 Norwegians lost their lives) contains overtones of people's screams of terror, while the artificial electronic sound world of Beatriz Ferreyra's substantial composition carries various vocal connotations of a somewhat gentler (though still ominous) kind.

Despite this thin thread of commonality running through the works on this disc, though, the overall programme presented here never comes across as the slightest bit unified and I suspect that different listeners will point to different tracks as providing the best listening. To my mind, the most important works here are the three longest ones: "Le renard et la rose" was a 1995 ICMC commission, and continues Robert Normandeau's cycle of works inspired by vocal onomatopoeia which began with "Spleen" in 1991. This newer work is very much a continuation of the earlier and uses heavily processed and augmented vocal (but wordless) utterances to build pulsing rhythmic and sonic structures which speak directly of human emotions in a way that recognisable words never could. It is a powerful and potent acousmatic work indeed.

Similarly, the Argentinean-born composer Beatriz Ferreyra never fails to impress with her output. Her entirely synthetic (I'd guess) sound study here conjures all up manner of images, both light-hearted and vaguely threatening, suggestive, as is its title, of something partly comic, yet with the potential to be dangerously fey.

Using recorded interviews carried out on the streets of London, together with ambient sound recordings from the gaming arcades and fun-fair on Brighton Pier, as well as computer-processed samples of spinning coins, Katharine Norman's contribution builds an entertaining and illuminating portrait of late twentieth century attitudes to life in south-east England. This work would make an interesting coda to her earlier London triptych.

These three works aside, though, the disc strikes me as struggling ever to rise above mediocre - although this may simply be because the rest of the music is just not to my taste (although I have to confess a great liking for Eirik Lie's sombre electric guitar lament, which despite its brevity has some potent imagery woven through its dark and moving tapestry). And indeed, I would hazard that the variety of styles presented here works well for this disc's intended purposes; it would certainly be both unrealistic and misleading for the ACF to give the impression that all its members produce similar sounding music. As a source of a wide range of items for broadcasting use, therefore, this release should prove invaluable. Equally, this disc - together with the others in the series - should prove of worth to serious students of electroacoustic music of the end of the twentieth century and beyond; a fitting complement to the releases from the likes of CDCM, for instance. As an item for consumption at home, however, this disc may be less attractive. Anyone unfamiliar with the works here would be well advised to sample across quite a few of the tracks before deciding whether or not to purchase.
