Absolutely stunning.......2007-02-07
How does one describe music of such transcendental beauty? As Carla Bley reported said of The Shaggs, "this music stops my mind". Just vina and two tamburas, a superb recording, and a great master musician at work, near the end of his life and experience. This is not fireworks; it is contemplation and emotion - beautiful, sad, yearning, joyful - it will take you away. I'd rate this as one of the most beautiful and evocative Indian recordings I have ever heard. It's also a two-disk package with about 140 minutes of music. This is perfection.
Ya Man !.......2004-06-23
I can't help but be biased towards the raga Yaman. One can find so many versions of this beautiful raga by almost all Indian Classical Artists. This one sounds so delicate like a fine cashmere shawl wrapped around on a cool evening. This one is certainly not for beginners, or excitement seekers, but for introspective, meditating types.
Not to Be Taken Lightly.......2001-02-19
Nimbus made the last recordings of ZM Dagar: one CD of Todi, one of Yaman/Kalyan. Dear old Ziamohiuddin was a musician who NEVER disappointed, and this disc is of course good solid ZM Dagar style. It seems, though, as if this last recording is more mellow than he once was. Compared to any of his explosive Panchamkauns recordings, this Todi truly is like moving honey. He keeps the twang to a minimum. Todi is a raga that allows for great variation of expression - this is probly ZMD's slowest, softest rendition of it. It is alap only, without drum, without composition. As always, he manages to keeps the raga so pure and centered that if you sit down and concentrate on listening to the CD from beginning to end, your brain will be almost silent, and all within it will be a slow Todi, Todi, Todi. This is the feeling of having been purified that some music can bring, that is really not very mystical if you think about it. Even if you try your best because the morning is over and you have to go about your business, it will take several minutes to break the spell ...

Young Master.......2001-02-19
I had heard snippets of Uday Bhawalkar before I got this CD. When I saw it, and looked at his photo on the back cover, I couldn't believe how young he was! He is one of the young outsiders keeping the Dagar family lineage alive and well. This is a good, solid CD with two really good evening and midnight dhrupads. Long, unhurried nomtom middle sections with impressive gamak singing. A curious detail is that Bhawalkar, especially in Malkauns, takes the alap to very high notes indeed. Of course he is not perfect, particularily in the improvisations after his Malkauns composition does he seem to lose track a few times, melodically (NOT go out of raga!), and perhaps forgetting to breathe right. But these are really minor quibbles. Compared to the good feeling it brings to hear a youngster keep alive the tradition of 20 generations, and do it well, they amount to nothing. When you hear him sing it, you realise that this is not really old music. This music is as fitting today, among skyscrapers, hand-held computers and communication satellites as it was 400 years ago, or two generations ago.

Slightly Misleading.......2004-05-24
I love this CD, but I have to say the title is a bit misleading. Its actually focused very much on classical Hindustani and folk traditions, with only a brief glimpse at Karnatic music and no mention of Bollywood or pop music. If you want that you'll have to go elsewhere, but the CD is still good for an overview of South Asian traditions (especially if you are unfamilar with them; Hindustani classical music is the music most westerners associate with India). Pakistan's rich Sufi traditions are explored with tracks from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Sabri Brothers. Folk traditions covered include Baul music from Bengal, mystical Rajahstani tunes and Zarsanga's pathan/pashtu music (which is very similar to neighboring Afghani traditions).
The main bulk of the CD focuses on classical Hindustani music, as I've said, like that made famous in the west by Ravi Shankar (who sadly is not included in the CD). Fortunately there is a wonderful number by the equally great sitarist Vilayat Khan, as well as performances by sarod player Amjad Ali Khan and shahiney player Bismillah Khan. So you do get quite a range of instruments and Ragas (albeit in shortened forms). Two great collabarations made it onto this CD as well, including a great duet between Asha Bhosle (the LEGENDARY singer) and Ali Akbar Khan and another between Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia (taken from the superb CD the Valley Recalls).
Like I said though, there is no Bollywood music or pop (though Asha Bhosle is included doing a classical piece). The extent of South Indian Karnatic music is limited to Dr. N. Ramani, which is really sad considering it's long tradition in India. Therefore, this CD is not a complete introduction to South Asian music. It is however, a wonderful starting point, especially for Hindustani pieces and north Indian folk. If you've heard Ravi Shankar or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and want to learn more about South Asian music, this is a pretty good place to start.
Spiritual and Spectacular - time to go beyond Ravi!!.......2003-06-28
The Rough Guide to the music of India and Pakistan ranks way up there in the higher echelons of the Rough Guide musical canon. It's practically Rough Guide nirvana (not the Seattle grunge!) thanks to the amazingly compiled collection of folk songs, classical ragas and religious Pakistani qawwali that it offers. This recording gives us a stunning reminder that the Indian subcontinent is one of the most culturally rich and ethnically diverse places on earth, with the added attraction of cradling an ancient, highly sophisticated, intensely spiritual and exquisitely beautiful musical tradition. The rhythmic and melodic complexity of these pieces is enhanced by scintillating instrumentation, and the raga excerpts in particular have a meditative "ethereality" that makes for deliciously relaxed listening. Many of these pieces reveal that the Indian and Pakistani musical tradition has inextricable religious and spiritual links, a concept which differs quite substantially from our own notions of strictly religious, secular, classical and popular music. These cuts demonstrate a marvellously subtle fusion of what would constitute distinct musical forms in the West, thereby imbuing the music with a depth generally not encountered in the Western tradition. Even if you remove the religious, cultural and historical riches that these songs abound in, the album is still outstanding and HIGHLY recommended for pure listening pleasure.

heavenly spheres.......2005-06-16
Listening to Zia Mohiuddin Dagar play rudra veena is like watching the stars at night. If you can contemplate all the ways that all the stars move in relation to each other, you may understand imaginatively how Dagar creates precise relationships between all the tones he plays.
The Singing Beena.......2004-06-12
I came about buying this CD reading all the reviews on the website. This is my first ZMD CD and I must say I am hooked. It is a beautiful recording to begin with, I must say they have superior quality recordings of Indian music in the West. One must not miss the introduction of the raag Todi ( Track 1), that won my heart. Its amazing to hear the Beena make almost a vocal sound. Certainly not for the casual listener though. Thank you, Late Zia M Dagar for breaking the family rule of not playing the Beena outside of the home. How else could we hear this divine music.
Master of the Dagarvani........2000-05-19
This recording reveals the genius and unique technique of the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. The musical tradition, Dagarvani of Dhrupad and his lineage are stuff of legend. He displays his soft and gentle technique on this grand and noble instrument. His speciality is the Aalaap in which he displays his mastery of this ancient tradition.
Excellent rendering of Traditional Drupad music........1999-09-11
Drupad is the original classical music style of Northern India, that has been greatly eclipsed by the more popular Khayal style, and other forms of lighter popular music. There are very few classical musicians who render the traditional Drupad. Ustad Zia Mohiuddin is one of them. He comes from a family of Drupad singers and instrumentalist, whose lineage goes back to the time of the Moghul Emperor Akbar. His technique seems effortless and very relaxing: enough to help you to meditate in to a higher plane. His virtuosity and artistic ability is unparalleled, except by some of his Dagar cousins and nephews.

Amazing traditional music collection.......2001-08-29
Ellipsis arts excels at putting out well-crafted collections of music from around the world. This CD, and its companion, Trance vol. 2, are stunningly packaged with hardbound booklets that the CD slips into. The booklets contain a decent magazine-styled overview of the various spiritual traditions out of which the music on the CD comes. It's nice to get the context that is often missing from a world music release. The music is also high caliber, and never suffers from the poor recording quality that plagues some field-recorded world CDs. BTW, the transcedent "Perde Kaldirma" is alone more than worth the price
of admission.
Real trance, not airheaded disco..........2000-07-10
Some folks have commented that this is a lousy excuse for techno/disco. Thank goodness "Trance 1" ain't that garbage, but it is an excellent compilation of REAL trance music, that doesn't rely on disco beats to send one into a 'no mind state'. So this is anything but utter noise, but a collection of fascinating sounds that's wonderful to hear, if you can stand to listen to something without a beat.
Ingratiangly bad..........2000-06-14
If anyone has ever listened to real techno music, they will certainly recognize this for what it is: pure, utter, noise. Give me BT anyday :)

Labour of Love: a Must-Have for the Dhrupad Fan.......2001-09-15
The original dhrupad album which transfixed a generation of Europeans was the senior Dagar brothers' DHRUPAD & KHYAL put out by Unesco/Auvidis, where they sang their magnificent Kamboji. Few dhrupad singers have that kind of testament to their art on record; French label Makar Records have recently released a Chal-Nat CD by Zia Fariduddin Dagar, destined for classic status, which comes incredibly close. The closest thing the younger Dagar brothers have got is this live album, SHIVA MAHADEVA (Shiva, the Great God). The classic here is the Malkauns of the first disc, which is given the full treatment with alap, nomtom and two dhrupads. This is one of the best performances I've heard on record by the younger brothers and quite possibly THE best. The shorter Darbari and even shorter Adana and Bhatiyar of disc two do not reach the same heights, although it's good, solid material.
What really tips the scales and makes this album a must-have is the lecture material graciously included at the end of each disc. The brothers name, enumerate and demonstrate the various singing techniques they use in their family style, a world usually closed to non-Indians (due to shortage of English-language material) except those with personal ties to the Dagar family or their students. I think the inclusion is literally unique as commercial releases go. This label clearly cares about its material and its customers, and the end result is an album which not only offers good listening but teaches you more about the art than any liner notes and makes you listen to your other dhrupad albums with new, fresh ears.

Dhrupad at its most pure.......2004-06-23
I am a great admirer of the Senior Dagar Brothers (Moinuddin Dagar and Aminuddin)and love the primal, stripped-down sound on the live recordings of the Royal Mewar Collection series on Virgin. I thought nothing could touch those recordings in terms of getting to the heart of Dhrupad vocals. Then I ran across this CD by their younger brothers, Zaheeruddin and Fayyazuddin.
The first piece on this CD starts off really, really quiet...the voices barely above the threshold of audibility. I could not listen to it on my Walkman because even the slightest breeze obscured the brothers' voices. Make no mistake, this is not a technical flaw. The voices do eventually come up to "normal" level but the initial low volume is but one aspect of the tremendous restraint, subtlety, and intelligence shown in the performances here. This is pure sound crafted into purest of art. There are no show-off vocal gymnastics, no attempts to entice the casual listener. This is sober, controlled music of the highest order and an absolute must for any fan of Indian Classical Music.
Sublime Dhrupad.......2001-03-01
The Dagar brothers (Ustads Zahiruddin and Faiyazuddin Dagar) render two Dhrupads in their inimitably sublime style. I believe the depth of their music comes as much from their conviction and devotion as with years of rigorous training and practice. Especially the Dhrupad in Choutal in Raga Bageshree on Lord Krishna (lovingly referred to as Nand here) that is rendered with such mellifluous beauty and gentle devotion that I cannot imagine anyone else coming close to being capable of. The notes that come with the CD describe their tradition along with translations of the compositions performed.
