5 out of 5 stars Welcome remastering!.......2007-07-27

George Harrison = God, in my book (even though I'm fully aware how much that goes against his religion and spirituality, heh heh), but I will try to write an unbiased review anyway.

His second real solo album, it lacks the epic scope and beauty of All Things Must Pass but is definitely one of his most solid records ever. I'm not really going to repeat what others have said, I just wanted to point out that if you had the old CD like me, this newly remastered version is well worth it. The sound is greatly improved, trust me! As for the DVD set, I actually found the accompanying booklet more satisfying. Whichever version you get (with or without DVD), it's worth the upgrade.

4 out of 5 stars Living In The Material World.......2007-07-03

This is a good set to have if nothing more than to follow George's transition from the Beatle's breakup to Brainwashed. This CD makes me feel like I am listening to a late night FM Station and or just need some background music with the exception of the 2 bonus tracks which are outstanding. The DVD is good reference and is a nice addition to complete this set, but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Hari's the real deal kids - Pete Ham is sprinkled throughout........2007-06-26

I think my title says it all...

George's sprituality may not be everyone's idea of a good listen but the texture of the songs and overall vibe must be appreciated. Thank the gods that Phil Spector didn't muddy this record up!!!

Pete Ham is featured as an on-call guitarist during these sessions. Once again proving that Pete was his favorite Badfinger guy.

Videos, well anything on video (even cartoon drawings) are appreciated because of the subject matter. Not earth-shaking but enjoyable to see.

4 out of 5 stars George Harrison's New Home.......2007-01-28

This album was Harrison's first chance to record an album on which the songs weren't mostly written during his last years with The Beatles. He uses the opportunity to reflect on his relationships with the other Beatles ("Sue Me, Sue You Blues") and to explore the intersection between his faith and the pop music audience he'd gained in The Beatles and with his previous album, All Things Must Pass. The beautiful song "Give Me Love" is his highest accomplishment in this regard, on this album or any other. "Give Me Love" includes all of Harrison's skills: his recently-honed slide guitar style, his country roots, and his lyrical tribute to love.

In a thrilling UK Garage scene, blighted only by a reliance on drippy soul cliché and tiresome braggadocio, The Streets' eminently quotable Mike Skinner may just be the voice to take it to the next level with Original Pirate Material. This debut is a staggeringly eloquent and fearlessly honest snapshot of gritty street-level existence, as experienced by an ordinary bloke. At first listen, the Birmingham-born Skinner's cheeky cockney affectations grate slightly. But for every line that makes you squirm, there are 20 that drop your jaw. "Has It Come to This?" is "A day in the life of a geezer," a seductive encapsulation of London lifestyle, presented raw as a bootleg, but bulging with sharp wit and feverish detail. "Stay Positive" weaves a fearful tale of heroin addiction, while "The Irony of It All" makes a beguiling case for legalization, presenting a fictional exchange between a beered-up, self-righteous lager lout and a fey student weed enthusiast. Original Pirate Material is a milestone, the real voice of British youth set down on record. Don't miss it. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Sardonic, Clever, Hip, Original.......2007-07-31

I first discovered this record in early 2003 and was immediately impressed. The lyrics and arrangements ooze a sort of snarly confidence, and the wordplay is really clever and memorable.

The Streets' two subsequent albums haven't lived up to the potential seen here on "Original Pirate Material," as Skinner's lazy/arrogant outlook on life became more annoying than charming, and the music seemed less inspired overall. But this record stands alone as a modern classic.

5 out of 5 stars original.. that's for sure.......2006-10-24

let's get one thing clear.. this is not rap. i don't really know how to classify it, but it's not rap. mike skinner rhymes over unique beats and to be honest, it sounds good. his rhymes are abstract and takes you all over the place. he talks about birds, geezers, clubs, and drugs among many things, but does so in a way i've never heard before. this album sounds amazing considering he recorded it in his bedroom. if you're looking for something new and an english accent doesn't bother you, check out the streets! just as good as this album is The Street's follow-up, A Grand Don't Come For Free.

tracks worth checking out:
Turn The Page (best opening song on any album i've ever heard)
Too Much Brandy
Don't Mug Yourself
It's Too Late
Irony Of It All (weed vs. alchohol)
Stay Positive (a description of himself during a heroine addiction)

5 out of 5 stars instantly a favorite!!!!.......2006-06-13

for whatever reasons i panned his latest album....mike skinner, by virtue of this debut album> enters genius-status...hall-of-famer and all in 4 listens of my first day ever hearing this obvious classic.
a heady blend of comic one-off, day-to-day musings, and some very basic earthy (am i allowed to say?) wisdom......this thing grabs you from beginning to end and never lets go.
every track rocks unique and sneeky brilliant....even sexy at times...bare yet clever and the words flow non-stop effortlessness without the pomp and bragadassiho of so much rap.
it's hard to believe i enjoyed a true hip-hop album as much as this.
this one's gonna rock my senses for some time to come.
an absolute must for any collection of what is cool and modern...even if you're not.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-11-02

Ok here's the scoop. Mike Skinner has done something wonderful to the UK Garage scene. He has dropped an album that is appealing to absolutely everyone who can get their hands on it. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, your feeling his stuff, this man is the truth!!
'Turn the Page' starts the album off with a bang, and it just gets better from there. The next 2 songs, 'Has It Come To This?' and 'Let's Push Things Forward' deliver a kind of laid back attitude to rapping, almost so that the songs sound like spoken words. The rest of the album is like this also, but it truly does fit well. 'It's Too Late' and 'Weak Become Heroes' are the kind of tracks that draw emotion from deep inside the listener, whether they are liking the music or not, and 'Stay Positive' delivers advice on life and how to deal with it. The only porr track is 'Sharp Darts', which is barely 2 minutes, which doesn't detract from the album at all. Incredible.
Definitely buy this CD, throw money at Mike Skinner for creating such brilliane!

4 out of 5 stars I don't even listen to rap and I still give it 4 stars.......2005-10-29

My buddy had played me a couple of tracks from this CD a year or two ago, and it had stayed with me ever since. So I finally sought out this album.

There must be something about the American rap "style" that is an instant turn-off; maybe it's all the bling-in-your-face attitude. Ugh. But the poetic eloquence here--the meaning behind these words--seems somehow to hit home.

"Turn the page" is freakin brilliant, no matter what you call it; rap, poetry, music, whatever.

I'm not saying every track is a masterpiece, but when something is obviously special it deserves special attenton.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic early punk.......2007-07-24

As other reviewers have said, anyone wishing to start a punk music collection along with the likes of Cockney Rejects, The Clash and Angelic Upstarts needs to get this one.

Fast angry lyrics with a strong political bite. This is without doubt the classic Stiff Little Fingers album. Fron here on their albums get slower and shall we say, lose their way.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect.......2007-03-20

Almost every song on here is great. This album reflects the band at their politically angry best. Musically, there's great guitar work and vocals with interesting lyrics that actually have something to say.

5 out of 5 stars I'm gonna try not to be biased here... aww, screw it!.......2005-12-29

HOLY SMOKES this is a good record. This is probably the most underrated thing I have ever heard in my entire life. And I'm not just saying that because I hail from Northern Ireland, where the Fingers are from. No, when people begin their collection of punk albums, along with Never Mind The Bollocks and the Clash and what have you, this is a must have. If you like the Sex Pistols, Anti-Flag, The Clash or The Unseen, you will love this because it sounds like a mix of them all. The only way I can think to describe Jake Burns's voice is that it sounds like he's been gargling barbed wire.

1)Suspect Device: This is the album version of the song, and much more grainy and not as polished as the single. It's one of my favourites, the chorus is amazing and the lyrics really hit home.

2) State of Emergency: Not as good as the others, but still good. Has some great lyrics.

3) Here We Are Nowhere: I didn't think much of this at first, but it's so catchy it will stick in your head for days. Trust me.

4) Wasted Life: Somehow Jake's voice sounds even more sharp on this song. It's about not wanting to be a soldier.

5) No More Of That: Better than State of Emergency, but not the best.

6)Barbed Wire Love: This is an odd love song. At one point the Stiff Little Fingers sound nothing like they do usually. But it's brilliant. After this the album gets really good.

7) White Noise: An anti-racism song. Very sharp and cut edge, one of the best on the record.

8) Breakout: Pretty much an anti- 9 to 5 song. I love it.

9) Law and Order: This is a nice little punk song. OK, so nice may not fit it exactly, but I'm running out of adjectives. This is a song about the pigs. They do a nice job of it too.

10) Rough Trade: This is a fantastic song about a certain big record company that did the Fingers over. Again one of my personal favourites.

11) Johnny Was: I don't know much about reggae, but I know that I like this song. It's lengthly, though (EIGHT MINUTES? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ONE TRUTH, TWO MINUTES, THREE CHORDS AND 4 OVER 4 TIME SIGNATURE?). But I absolutely love the intro.

12) Alternative Ulster: This was one of the first punk songs I liked, again maybe because of the fact I am living in Ulster where it's boring at the best of times. But I LOVE the lyrics. I mean, the 2nd verse: 'Is this the kinda place you wanna live? Is this where you wanna be? Is this the only life we're gonna have?'. And the last screaming bit: 'They say they're a part of you, but that's not true you know. They say they got control of you, but that's a lie you know. They say you will never be free.'

13) Closed Groove: Weird, weird song. But it will stick in your head.

14)Suspect Device (single version): I've already reviewed this song, so all I'll say is this one is more polished with no swearing.

15)78 RPM: I love this song, I really do. It's more upbeat than the others, but that ain't a bad thing.

16) Interview: This is pretty interesting, I found parts of it funny ie. Jake Burns's first radio interview, John Peel's little obsession etc.

All in all, a great album, or good craic as we say over here.

VH-1's Behind the Music may signify the final curtain for some acts, but Hall and Oates aren't so easily confined to the dustbins of pop history. With a chart run that spanned most of the '70s and '80s, Philadelphia's most enduring purveyors of blue-eyed soul went on to keep a fairly low profile until "Do It for Love," a newly recorded track for their 2002 VH-1 retrospective, crept up to the top of the adult contemporary charts. Nearly a year later, the duo reprises the track and title on a full album that aims to recapture the best aspects of their glory days. Among its highlights are a sublime cover of New Radical's "Someday We'll Know" that teams them up with War Babies collaborator Todd Rundgren, and the funky "Miss DJ," a playful pop confection that avoids the excessive novelty of their more calculated '80s hits. After three decades, Hall's remains one of pop's most expressive voices. And while the album as a whole may lack the edge and energy of the pair's earliest work, it's still a promising collection from a rock duo that's earned a place in Philly soul history. --Bill Forman

4 out of 5 stars Hard to beat their mid-eighties albums, but this comes close.......2007-07-31

A friend of mine worked as a roadie for H&O through the Eighties. A tough white guy from Dorchester, Mass., he always said they had an ability to cross over all kinds of boundaries. And he said they were both great guys in person, too--a rarity for bands back then. Both he and I and our friends from Roxbury all listened to H&O at the restaurant we worked at--along with Ice Cube and Run DMC of course. Great to see the boyz back touring. You absolutely cannot beat a live H&O show, especially now with a string section! I regret missing their July 4 show in Philly, which I hear was fantastic despite the rain.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy.......2006-04-30

Hard to believe that this CD is just as good as their many hit albums from the 1980s. Their ability to create hooks, songs you can't get out of your head, is at their absolute best. If you are an H&O fan, or if you just want great pop music to listen to - over and over - I can't recommend this highly enough. If only it could airplay instead of the junk you hear today on the radio!

5 out of 5 stars H & O still groovin' -- wow!.......2005-08-16

More than 100 reviews here, almost all five or four stars, what does that tell you?! Simply that Hall & Oates are still just a great group. The blend of their voices, the instrumentation, the songwriting -- it's all here. This is as good of album they've ever made, and they've made some legendary ones.

This is an epic CD -- and I just picked it up at the library and need to buy it this week. It truly is wonderful. Favorites include "Man On A Mission," the title track, and "Heartbreak Time."

Wow! Thanks H & O for keeping your music alive. Please, don't take so long between albums next time.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES!.......2005-03-12

I'm a big Hall and Oates fan and I recommend this selection. Not only is Do It For Love a contagious hit that you'l want to play over and over again, but this CD is full of other terrific tracks as well. My second favorite off this CD would be Man On A Mission. Daryl Hall is one of the smoothest vocalist of all time, half of the most popular duo in recording history...so what else would you expect from this talented pair!

5 out of 5 stars Get this album and "Do it for Love".......2004-11-13

I have been following Daryl and Johns music since the late 70's and they seem to be like fine wine. They get better and better with age! I should know! I have even met them in person! This album is definately a hit! As I proceeded to pick up this album the day it went on sale I did not know how much of a good thing I was going to get. Man was I pleased when I found out all 14 tracks are great hits in themselves. I would elaborate on all of them, but just the title one "Do it for Love". It is definately a Hall and Oates song! The vocals of Daryl just make the song come alive as if your actually living the song. Daryl is THAT good! Johns background vocals as well as the blend of the vocals of Tom "T-Bone" Wolk, Charlie "Mr. Casual" DeChant and the rest of the band really make this song a hit! On one final note, I am engaged to be married. My fiancee and I both agreed that this will be 'our' song at our wedding. Thats how good this song is and the album is just as good!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Often overlooked classic.......2007-02-12

This album suffers from being the follow-up to one of the best albums in all of rock. All Things Must Pass is as good as everyone says, if you haven't heard it yet then you need to seek it out. Despite what some critics and fans would have you believe, Living In The Material World is a worthy successor.

At only one disc, it obviously isn't as sprawling as ATMP. The music isn't as varied, staying mostly in the vein of bluesy rock and soaring ballads. The Indian/Eastern vibe is also downplayed here, appearing most notably on the bridges of the title track. The lyrics are for the most part uplifting, with a fair dose of George's witty and sarcastic humor. The result is a very cohesive, catchy, and spiritual disc of post-Beatles rock and pop.

This album contains one of Harrison's biggest hits ("Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)"), some fantastic guitar work (Harrison played all the guitars on the album himself), and some of the most beautiful songs he has ever written ("That Is All," "Be Here Now," "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long," "The Day The World Gets Round," really just about every ballad here is gorgeous!), yet because it clearly isn't All Things Must Pass Volume Two, some people still consider it a disappointment. It has aged MUCH better than some of the albums that followed it, and in my opinion is probably his strongest work after ATMP.

The remastered version sounds wonderful, but the two extra tracks don't really add a lot. Deep Blue is a great song, but just doesn't seem to fit here. Miss Odell is mostly forgetable, but it always brings a smile to my face to hear George screw up the words and laugh about it. The booklet is very nice, with extensive liner notes, lyrics, and lots of pictures.

If you have ATMP and are unsure where to go next, this would be a wise choice. If you're a George Harrison fan and you don't have this album, you definitely need it. If you're new to his solo work and don't feel like diving right into the intimidating ATMP, this would be a good disc to test the waters with. Basically, if you're a fan of George, The Beatles, or just good old rock and pop, this is a great addition to any CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Living in the Material World.......2007-01-18

This is a great album for the post beatle syndrome, yet that said, George Harrison is one the best musicians from this period, or any, in question.

From ASWAD to TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS, to SNOOP and Celia Cruz, I like them all; and I still say this is a must have.

I also recommend "All THINGS MUST PASS" by the way.

Later

5 out of 5 stars How ALL THINGS MUST PASS would sound without Spectorization.......2006-10-26

Naturally, after years of being only allowed 1 or 2 songs on Beatles albums, George Harrison had a huge backlog that essentially made his first solo album ALL THINGS MUST PASS (1970) completed except for the recording. With Phil Spector having been entrusted with the presentation of the Beatles' final album LET IT BE, it was perhaps only natural he would have a hand in the solo work of the Beatles who actually appreciated his involvement (i.e. not Paul). Save for the APPLE JAM album that was intended as a bonus, but instead shot the price of ALL THINGS MUST PASS up to triple-album level, George's first solo effort showed that he was going to do just fine on his own.

However, because ALL THINGS MUST PASS was a rousing success both commercially & artistically, it was likely George would have trouble coming up with material on his next album, and the prevailing opinion from most fans was that all his subsequent solo albums had that trouble. No doubt, George knew he had a tough act to follow with 1973's LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, but writing songs was the least of his worries.

Initially, George was going to work with Phil Spector again, but he had trouble making the recording sessions & thus, has only a co-production credit on one song. Now, George is the one in the driver's seat guiding an album that is the stripped-down affair he wanted from the beginning. But George chose to record the album at Apple Studios instead of Abbey Road, and the differences in recording techniques were staggering (Apple's had nothing on Abbey Road's). After abandoning LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD to work on the Concert For Bangladesh, George returned to it & at last managed to get things to fall into place.

George's second #1 hit came with the gentle lullaby "Give Me Love [Give Me Peace On Earth], which continues the help-your-brother & make-the-world-better vibe that the Bangladesh concert was all about. After the Wall of Sound delights on George's first #1 "My Sweet Lord", the more organic mode on "Give Me Love" is quite refreshing & a lot less stifling.

Even with that ray of sunshine, George is still aware that the world is not quite as rosy as all that. Songs like "The Light That Has Lighted The World", "Who Can See It", "Be Here Now" & "The Day The World Gets 'Round" have George facing that cruel world around him, and he basically says that even with all our imperfections, we can still find hope & inspiration. It is just that all of us need to look for them as individuals; we will not learn much by having someone tell us the answers.

The legal fallout of the Beatles' disbanding was still fresh at the time of LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, and George bravely exposes all the wounds at the heart of those battles. "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" wonderfully demonstrates the endlessly tangled web that the Beatles had become simply by breaking up, where it got to the point that hardly anybody knew who they were suing & why. "You serve me/And I'll serve you/Swing your partners, all get screwed" is simply brilliant & wickedly hilarious at condensing all that legal red tape. The title track is an even more pointed dig at the Beatles' legal situation, even daring to mention George's former bandmates by name. It is a wonder yet another lawsuit (this one of defamation) did not come resulting from this song.

True, being a Beatle may have helped George Harrison be financially set for life (though the royalty situation would take even longer to sort out), but he did not let that blind him to his spirtuality. "The Lord Loves The One [That Loves The Lord]" reaffirms the Biblical concept that "the Lord helps those who help themselves", and while it is a true statement, the overall song seems to be one instance where George tried to hit people over the head with his religion. He sounds much better when he keeps those views in check. That being said, it is still a listenable song on an album with 11 of such in all.

"Try Some, Buy Some" was the only song which Phil Spector had a direct hand in, and while he is a CO-producer, his influence is still more than palpable. The lyrics are a little difficult to decipher, making it hard to say if this is a love or anti-love song. It is still a wonderful production all the same, showing that even on a back-to-basics album like MATERIAL WORLD, a little panorama never hurt anyone.

Finally, there are simple songs of devotion that show George mastering the art of melody that Paul McCartney already had locked down years before. "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" is a bouncy delight that would have made it an excellent follow-up single to "Give Me Love". It all closes out with the masterfully rendered "That Is All", a song that manages to be as expansive as a Phil Spector production even with the rootsier approach George favored. His vocal is stunningly beautiful, reaching falsetto range in parts that almost pierce the soul.

I would imagine since this was recorded while George was still with Apple Records, it only now has gotten the remastering treatment, long since overdue. While the sound is certainly better & clearer, the bonus tracks, while still only a few at 2, manage to get it somewhat right this time, as opposed to the obviously-flawed Dark Horse reissues. "Deep Blue" was originally the B-side to "Bangla-Desh", which became a top 30 hit in 1971. It was smart to include "Deep Blue" because it was one of George's finer songs, but like some people have said, forgetting about including "Bangla-Desh" was a bit of a blunder. In my opinion, it would have been better to have that song on here as a bonus track than "Miss O'Dell", as upbeat & lighthearted as it is.

Still it is great that LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD finally got the deluxe treatment it deserved. Now all that remains are similar refurbishings of DARK HORSE (1974) & EXTRA TEXTURE (1975). As fatally flawed as they may be, they still appear to have their fans & I think people would pay to purchase them again. It would also be interesting to see what songs were scrapped in favor of obviously inferior ones that made the cut.

Even with recalcitrant producers, shoddy recording conditions, and behind-the-scenes legal wranglings, George Harrison managed to perservere & indeed create a worthy follow-up to the magnum opus that was ALL THINGS MUST PASS. Some people call that the best Beatles solo album, and they may be right, but they should not forget that George did create some fantastic material afterwards. It was simply those high standards set by ALL THINGS MUST PASS that rendered anything in its wake less than stellar. LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD, for the most part, shows what a little production restraint can do for George Harrison's music. Since he would take the reins on the production end for most of the rest of his career, LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD simply points the way towards that future.

5 out of 5 stars Brillante continuacion despues de "All things must pass" con una gran remasterizacion.......2006-10-07

"The Light That Has Lighted The World ", "Who can see it", "The day the world gets 'round", "Be here now" y "That is all", tal vez sean muy parecidas entre si, pero esta la belleza y solidez de George, principalmente en sus espirituales letras.

3 out of 5 stars LISTEN FOR YOURSELVES for your best review........2006-11-10

When people say an album (or movie or tv show, etc...) is bad and they do NOT explain why they think it is, then you know that they either don't know what they're talking about, they just like to talk bad about good things, or they just don't get it. When everyone else and myself all agree that this is a solid pop/rock album, then you know the people described above have their comments deflated. Is the album good? Yes. Very good. Is it the greatest thing since sliced bread, maybe not.

Here's the greatest advice to everyone looking to find out if an album is great or not. CLICK ON THE SONG SAMPLES and listen for yourself! Don't let anyone tell you it's great or it stinks. If you like what you hear, then it is good. It's as simple as that. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-11-19

Material Issue was a Chicago band who wrote some of the most killer 3 minute power pop songs! themes of love and girls are dominant (at least 6 different girl's names are sung about in the lyrics). the music is strong and full of hooks and hummable choruses that pack their weight in radio gold. this album spawned a few college hits if i remember correctly. this comes highly recommended for fans of Cheap Trick, Big Star, or Field Trip.

5 out of 5 stars A Chicago classic.......2005-09-29

Material Issue may have been the best pure band out of the Chicago scene that spawned Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, and Urge Overkill, among many others. It's great three minute, three chord rock and roll, wearing Jim Ellison's heart and influences on its sleeve. Contrary to one of the other reviews, MI did not disband. Ellison killed himself, a tragic loss for pop music. But that is not why to buy this album: buy it for the life that courses through Ellison's songs and his band's performances, not for the sad way his life ended.

5 out of 5 stars This is one for the time capsule folks, a must have........2005-07-29

Influences (Cheap Trick, etc) aside, this album is filler free, which makes it better than anything previously put out by a power pop act. Thus this is the definitive power pop album of all time. It's a shame MI never got their just due. A power pop act in the midst of the over indulged 'grunge' movement sealed their fate. I saw them in Atlanta in '94 or '95 and remember I was 1 of maybe 50 people. That's the stupid ugly side of the music biz folks, be part of the new craze or be pushed aside. Nearly every song on this disc is memorable, with Very First Lie, Valerie..., and Crazy among the many gems on this album. Sadly, Material Issue's frontman and soul left us. I thank him for leaving us a part of him and hopefully many others will find their way to this much unheralded music.

4 out of 5 stars Mercury, Don't Overthrow Material Issue.......2004-12-01

I bought this CD in 1991 and still play many tracks from it, especially "Valerie Loves Me", "Diane" and "Very First Lie." Of all the songs I used to listen to in the early 90s, "Valerie" still holds as one of my all time favorites as I used to know someone by that name many, many, many years ago.

It is too bad that the rest of Material Issue's Mercury catalog has gone out of print because Jim Ellison and his band had the ability to write and record in a fairly wide variety of musical styles.

If you ever find a copy of "Destination Universe" buy it because it has some of the best power pop ballads that I ever heard in the 1990s. Mercury should reissue this as well as "Freak City Soundtrack" and put out a greatest hits compilation that feature the cover tracks "Bus Stop", "Bad Time," "Cowboy Song" and "Blockbuster" that have long been out of print.

  34. The Passion Of Our Lord According To St. Matthew, BWV 244: Leonard Bernstein Discusses The Material And Dramatic Structure Of The St. Matthew Passion

Amazon.com

For all of Leonard Bernstein's remarkably eclectic affinities, his legacy as a conductor is not often associated with Baroque music. Yet this remastered recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion--like that of his Bach concertos with Glenn Gould and others--is a moving document of musical and emotional empathy. True, Bernstein's stylistic approach (the frequently languorous tempos, the italicized effect accorded certain significant moments in Bach's richly textured drama) and employment of large-scale choral and orchestral forces have long since fallen out of favor in the wake of the "authentic- performance" movement. And purists will certainly object to the use of English texts as well as numerous cuts from the original score (mostly in Part Two). That said, Bernstein's reading has a thrilling cogency and dramatic consistency fully abetted by the New York Philharmonic's heartfelt playing as well as by the excellently prepared chorus. Listen to the subtly varied inflections of each recurrence of the chorale "O Lamb of God Most Holy" to signal the inexorable course of the tragedy, or to the devastating impact of the sorrowful final double chorus. The vocal soloists are unfortunately uneven, ranging from David Lloyd's erratic, hooty tenor as the Evangelist to the multidimensional Jesus characterized by bass William Wildermann. The set includes a bonus track of Bernstein discussing how Bach unfolds his vividly dramatic structure in the Passion. -- Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-19

Wow, I picked this up used for six bucks and was not expecting much because I wasn't too exited about the thought of an english translation. I was blown away when I listened to this. Not only is this great emotional music (I didn't think they made baroque music like this!). But I can follow it in english and it makes it incredibly entertaining and simply beautiful. Great music AND it tells a story! Really, give this a try....and keep me updated! (also does anyone think its odd that he has a cigarette in his hand on the cover, you can tell that this was produced a while ago, today thats not politically correct!....just an observation)

5 out of 5 stars The best of the baroque era!.......2005-04-19

Lutheran tradition of setting the passion narrative to music reached its peak in J. S. Bach's "Saint Matthew's Passion". It recounts biblical events and tries to apply their lessons to life. This work is the most famous of Bach's five passions and it regularly alternates between different time frames. The central narrative, taken from the Gospel of Saint Matthew 26-27, but also based on several texts written by C. F. Henrici (Picander), a librettist and close friend of the composer himself, takes place in biblical times. An evangelist narrates the story of Jesus's arrest, trial and crucifixion, with different solo singers performing the parts of Jesus, Judas, Pilates, High Priests, Disciples, roman soldiers and the crowd.

Another set of musical pieces regularly takes us out of the biblical time frame and into modern times with arias and duets. In these pieces, individuals contemplate the implications of biblical events for modern believers.

This work was meant for use as part of church services, especially Good Friday Vespers. It is sometimes compared to an opera and sometimes to a sermon. "Saint Matthew's Passion" represents the culmination of lutheran tradition of liturgical passions and it certainly demonstrates the height of Bach's compositional mastery and the profundity of his musical expression. With this massive work, Bach claimed his throne as a genius and master of polyphonic music. He optimally uses all musical means available to him at the time: widely diverse singing voices and instrumental sonorities. Generally, the chorus express the crowd's feelings, while the chorals symbolize the christian community. Every character has his/her particular musical style in the Passion. The evangelist carries the actions forward in the form of recitative secco, accompanied by continuo alone, merely recounting events. Jesus speaks to his disciples and to Pilates in a form between recitative and aria.

My personal favorite parts: "Erbarme dich, Mein Gott" (Lord, have mercy!") aria, accompanied by a somewhat wayward baroque violin, and of course, the tragic, triumphant chorus finale "Wir setzen uns mit tränen nieder" ("We sit down with tears in our eyes"), one of the most beautiful and powerful things a christian mind has ever created!

5 out of 5 stars FROM BERNSTEIN'S SOUL TO OURS.......2003-04-18

I've waited 20 years to find this re-release of a 60's recording that I'd worn out 2 sets of LPs playing. In my view this is one of Bernstein's finest- every tempo, every dynamic, every nuance flows from his soul to his baton and to the orchestra, chorus, and soloists. Certainly not for the purists given the cuts and modern orchestral treatment, but for pure listening bliss this is the recording to own. His (all too) brief explanation of this work at the end exposes his emotional involvement with this masterful music and is a delightful bonus that was originally included as a 7" LP in the set. Bravo to Sony for their Bernstein re-release program!

5 out of 5 stars passion in this Passion.......2002-03-24

The true test of this recording is comparing the last chorus with other versions by Klemperer, Gardiner, Ritcher, Koopman, et al. Why?
Because Bach was wrenching all the drama he could from that last
expression of the sorrow of life of Jesus. "Wir setzen uns mit Tranen nieder" says it all. And Bernstein's version comes in at the slowest.
Over nine minutes! Koopman at six. And the cold, heartless Gardiner
even faster. Gardiner has no concept of the meaning and glorious
passion in this music. Don't buy his Bach recordings. Listen only to
this last chorus' first phrase and how gut-wrenching it is! Bernstein
understood this great masterpiece, and his version is worth buying
just for this chorus.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Musical and Spiritual Experience........2001-05-09

Music is a dynamic art and must adapt in many ways with each individual performance. I really don't place much value in the effort to perform a composition only by the "original" or "period" standards. If one lays aside such bias, one may experience the muscial beauty and spiritual blessing of this performance of a sacred classic. I speak German as a second language, but thoroughly enjoyed hearing it in English. After all, one's mother tongue is always a more powerful medium. English draws us closer to the message of Christ's atoning death which Bach sought to share in this masterpiece. This recording is very passionate and moving. Kudos also to the staff at Sony who remastered the originals onto CD. I had no idea that the performance was from the early 60's until I read it. The sound quality is tops.

Album Description

Folk with a Celtic and even Bluegrass flavor, Rite the First Time swings from the sublime to the silly and from the material to the spiritual in eclectic mixes of harmonic vocals and acoustic instruments (harp, guitar, bodhran, and upright bass).

5 out of 5 stars I cannot say enough about this CD!.......2007-05-01

I love it for its intricate harmonies (I love to sing along in harmony) and its brilliant, original, and hysterical lyrics. Pity Party is my absolute favorite. These ladies have a scathing sense of humor. My two year old, autistic daughter is completely enchanted by this CD, as well. I expect we'll be playing a whole lot of it in the Mommy-mobile for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics~!.......2007-02-04

I love the lyrics! There's such humor in some of the tracks - really wonderful rhythmic well made music - unlike anything really - so refreshingly NOT new agey. More, please!

5 out of 5 stars Rite the first time is very RITE!!.......2006-08-18

I bought this CD based on the name of the group, and the name of the CD, just having heard the little bitty preview on Amazon and I'm glad I did. It is intelligent humor; entertaining musically as all three women are talented both in voice and instrument. Sometimes, in the Craft, we take ourselves a little bit too seriously. This is an excellent reminder that there's another side to it all.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful.......2005-12-09

I love this cd. The eclectic mix of music that sing about the mundane and make it so fun. I enjoy just singing along with these women. They have done a great job and made a wonderful cd. This album is quirky and light-hearted and well worth the money spent on it. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Sisters in Witchcraft.......2005-09-23

Anything by the 'sisters is great. C'mon, how many voices wax poetic about Iowa? This CD is solid and well thought out, with vocals that penetrate the mind; and enrich the believers nights. And it's too bad so few people will ever hear of them. This celebration is NOT just for us; it's for everyone. Blessed be.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual Bliss..........2006-07-12

Judging from the other reviews, it looks as if you either don't understand this album at all or you want to marry it, have it's babies, and make sure a copy goes into your casket when you check out. I am one of the latter. I am currently shopping for my second copy of this cd, my old one of 11 years got lost in a recent move and I'm jonesing...best meditation, space, sexy music around. The disc has held up to repeated playings, I am always finding new moments in it to enjoy. It is surely Laswell's greatest; how can I decribe it? Rich orchestrated Trip-hop/acid jazz/world beat, they do stuff here in 'real time' w/ 'real instruments' that most DJ's who have to rely on synths and loops must only dream of. I agree with the other reviewers that Laswell's ouvre is very uneven...but fans of this one take heart, there was an album made about the same time with many of the same musicians which is almost as good as this one...if you're interested, check out Nicky Scopelitis's Ektasis album (he has several with similar titles, look for the one on the Axiom label with the koenline cover with the Horus/ Udjat eye design). I envy those who will discover this album anew...happy listening...

5 out of 5 stars Superlatives are superfluous.......2006-05-27

This is a truly brilliant album that anyone who gives a shi-ite about music should have in their collection. I like all kinds of music (except R & B, top-40 garbage & punk-lite, e.g. Goood Charlotte) - everything from Sepultura, Slipknot, Obituary, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Opeth, Clash, Pistols, Damned, Iggy & the Stooges, Velvets, Ramones, Pere Ubu, Wire, Butthole Surfers, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Public Enemy, Beasties, James Brown, P-Funk, Boards of Canada, Orbital, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, etc, etc. If you like any of the aforementioned you will like this album (mind you, if your musical palette is limited to one genre only, e.g. death metal, then you are a narrow-minded fool and will probably be bemused and not understand it at all).

It's very trippy (the title is apposite) and very chilled out and combines all kinds of styles - I think another reviewer mentioned funk, jazz, rock, hip-hop and ambient. That pretty much covers it! It features the legendary Bill Laswell (bass player extraordinaire and head of Axiom Records) as the driving force behind the band, Wayne Shorter (jazz saxophonist who used to play with Miles Davis), Bootsy & Bernie of P-Funk fame, Nicky Skopelitis on excellent guitar, a couple of Middle Eastern-sounding geezers, and sundry others. The price of admission alone is justified by "Words of Advice", a William Burroughs (RIP) rant that includes the immortal line "Who wants to be the richest guy in some cemetery?" The man's advice is SOLID.

BUY THIS RECORD!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars overrated junk.......2005-12-22

Couldn't choose zero stars, unfortunately. The self-indulgent, easy-listening, adult contemporary stuff here is below contempt. What a great waste of talent, if one's is to believe the liner credits: Z. Hussein, Jaki Liebezeit, et al, what were you thinking? Abismally dissapointed. Stay away! . .

5 out of 5 stars Thank God CD's are more durable than vinyl.......2004-05-08

While my review may not be as eloquent as the others on this page, the sentiments are the same. This recording will take you to a hundred different places every time you listen to it, be it night time or day. I have found myself raving about this album to others like some crazy fanatic - but then you just have to get it to see what I mean.

Product Description

"In ancient Egypt, the attainment of white gold was considered to be one of the hallmarks of advanced initations. In India, secret yogas often utilized the balancing of the internal sun (sureya) and the internal moon (chandra) in order to generate a subtle type of white gold. This internal synthesis of subtle substance was associated with highly elevated states of being.-------Presented in a modern manner without dogna, this easy-to-use practice offers a wealth of benefits. For one, it purifies the nadis (subtle energy pathways) and increases the strength of one's illumination. For another it activates subtle energies connected with the pituitary and pineal grand. The meditation tends to have a deeply balancing and restorative effect on those who practice it. The cumulative effects of this practice are extraordinary, bringing the practitioner enhanced spiritual awareness.----The recording combines detailed guided instruction with an ancient indian chant to the sun and moon. Within this chant are audible Hathor sounds making the meditation more catalytic and powerful".Tom Kenyon
