2 out of 5 stars 1,000 Strings does Cuban Music.......2006-08-25

I cannot claim any expertise when it comes to what is "authentic" Cuban music, but I can say that this CD sounds like I'm listening to Lawrence Welk or Percy Faith doing Cuban. Both have highly skilled musicians, but something about the renditions on this CD just feels wrong - synthetic. I give it two stars for the musical competence.

5 out of 5 stars Beatiful instrumental interpretation.......2000-02-02

This CD, Bolero I, Cuban Patio, and Cuban Jazz is a wonderful music collection of old Cuba. They fill your soul. It makes you reminiscent on the good times. These CDs bring me closer than nything else to my Culture.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant overview of Sosa's more lyrical side.......2006-09-16

Omar Sosa, Cuban jazz piano genius, here presents his most ravishingly romantic stylings culled from four previously released discs to great advantage.

If you've never heard Sosa, this is as good a place as any to make his acquaintance. If you've encountered him before, I suggest you cut to the chase and acquire Mulatos, his signature disc. And while you're at it, get Ayagunos, Pictures of Soul, and Mulatos Remix.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't give the time of day to a compilation disc of this sort. I'm, however, cutting Sosa a major break because he's just such a stone genius. Combine that with the fact that he records for his own label, doesn't get the kind of distribution his peers get on their major record labels, and, hence, labors in jazz's backwaters, and you've got a disc that ought to receive widest possible distribution, even though it's a rerelease of previously recorded numbers.

Combine that with the fact that on the four discs that make up the material from which these selections were culled there are numerous problematic rap/hip-hop/bogus contemporary selections, and you have pure Sosa sans the chaff.

Nevertheless. Hear me on this. Sosa chaff is better than 90% of others' best stuff. My view is that you should pick up this altogether remarkable disc, and then pick the four others (Free Roots, Spirit of the Roots, Bembon, and Prietos) from which these selections were taken. Yes, you'll get some unpleasantness in the form of stupid rap/hip-hop, but even this grossness is superior to the vast majority of drek churned out by other artists.

Really, this is an altogether lovely disc, one of the finest jazz releases in the past decade. If it acquaints you with one of world jazz's monster players and gets you deeper into this marvelous music, all the better. But either way, you can't lose.

Why not pick it up and be majorly graced?

3 out of 5 stars Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30

As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).

That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.

The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.

For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.

5 out of 5 stars excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27

Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

5 out of 5 stars 70's cuban salsa.......2001-11-30

Every song on this album is a 70's style cuban salsa gem, in a very datable 1970's kind of way. This album paved the way for modern day "timba" music by including a funky drumset as part of the salsa band and including lots of percussion "breaks". Also includes lots of horns, beautiful arrangements, congas, claves, and cowbells, and beautiful call and response singing. Even the flute, an instrument which usually annoys me, adds to the irresistability. The melodies are so simple yet soul touching. The closest comparison i can think of would be traditional cuban rumba music, such as the album "Patato and Totico" but with the addition of a full band and glorious arrangements. This album can make you dance and cry at the same time and carry you back several decades. The sound quality of the recordings is unfortunately not great, but tolerable.

    5 out of 5 stars Guaco..........2006-02-05

I haven't actually heard THIS CD, but a different one that a Venezuelan friend sent me. When I received it I didn't expect to like it a whole lot, but "wao" :) Their songs are incredible, catchy and with a great rhythm. For me, they are now one of my favorites in la música latina, along with famous musicians like Juanes and Carlos Vives. I wonder why they aren't more popular outside of Venezuela.

    5 out of 5 stars I haven't heard this album..........2005-02-21

but I've heard about 60-70% of the songs in it. Guaco is without a doubt Venezuela's premier salsa-gaita-jazz-funk-timba band. They are eclectic, mostly modern salsa, but incredibly creative and have interesting compositions.

If you like harddriving salsa, and the type of musicality evidenced by performers like Juan Luis Guerra, or Cuba's Issac Delgado, you will be in good company with Guaco (http://www.guaco.com)

I cannot recommend this band enough...guaranteed to become a favorite in your CD player.
