    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Scottish fiddle music.......2006-12-10

This is one of the best records of Cape Breton fiddle music, one of the truly great fiddling traditions of the world. Theresa Morrison has been playing the violin for well over half a century. Her brother Joe McLean will be well known to lovers of this music, but Ms. Morrison has not recorded before--unfortunately. Her music has not accommodated to the up-tempo, flashy style of the post-"folk revival" decades. She plays simple, rather slow tunes, with exquisite note-shaping and dynamics and bow work that sounds like a foretaste of Heaven (my idea of Heaven, anyway). The full, aching, sometimes almost unbearable beauty of Cape Breton music comes through here. If you want to see strong men weep, play this record. It must make the rocks of the Nova Scotia headlands break into tears.

      Album Description

Our "North Shore" is the area in Cape Breton from St.Ann's Bay to WreckCove(along part of the Cabot Trail). The North Shore Gaelic Singers were an informal association of men who lived there and sang together for most of their lives. They performed at community events around Cape Breton and at festivals across North America.

The songs on this CD were recorded in the field, that is in people's kitchens and community halls. Some were recorded in the 1970's with the rest taped in 1986. These tapes were then digitally re- mastered for this recording. Many of the songs included here are milling songs (called waulking in Scotland) and they are sung with much energy and good humour. Also included are a love song,a song in praise of lewis,a song about the effects of evection and a Loaidh or hymn(done in precenting style). The CD ends with a song in English about the North Shore Singers sung by Buddy MacDonald, the son of one of the group. The lyrics for each song are included in the CD booklet.
