Down to earth Flamenco.......2007-05-12

The performers on this collection are the cream of the crop of grass roots Flamenco. El Loreno's voice is simply mystical. La Paquera holds in her feeling the power and pasion of Flamenco in one person. if you love Flamenco this is a must.

This is not Gypsy Kings..........2007-05-07

This music was not at all what i expected. I was expecting a bit more fun guitar and such, but the singing is what blew it: it sounded like so much screeching to me. Played once. It hurt my ears. Now, its collecting dust.

superb flamenco classics.......2007-03-12

If you want to hear flamenco at its very best you can't do better than to buy this CD. Manitas de Plata was the best of the flamenco guitarists of the 60's and La Paquera de Jerez was the signature female flamenco vocalist of her generation. The other artists on this CD are also the best of their times. Flamenco of our day still has technical virtuousity, but I can't help but think that something essential has been lost, something to do with the soul of this music form.

I always loved gipsy music and unfortunately it's not easy to come by a good recording with the 'real' gipsy music. Well this one is the real deal.

Album Description

This recording brings together pieces writen for the guitar by some of the most eminent contemporary composers of Argentina. These include Maximo Pujol, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1957. He has obtained numerous first prizes in composition contests at home and abroad. The guitar works of Maximo Diego Pujol have been performed and recorded throughout the world by artists of the highest caliber. Both Narciso Saul and Juan Falu are active as performing musicians in Argentina. Carols Guasttavino was born in Santa Fe in 1912. He studied in Buenos Aires and IN Europe in the years after the war. Walter Heinze is active as a teacher of guitar, as well as composing and perfomring frequently.

PACKING FOR ARGENTINA.......2007-02-27

This recording of contemporary Guitar music of Argentina is played magnificently by Victor Villadangos. After listening to this splendid recording, I had fantasies of sitting in a café in Buenos Aires drinking strong coffee. Some of my favorites compositions on the album that I particularly loved are Hector Ayala 7 part "Serie Americana" Narsico Saul's "Boulevard San Jorge" Maximo Pujol's 5 part "Suite #1', and Carlos Guastino's "Sonata No.1" .

All in all, I loved this recording; it certainly put me in the mood to go to Argentina.

An outstanding album with some surprising music.......2004-01-26

The repertoire here ranges into more diverse styles of composition, and so presents more variety, than the recent John Williams album of music from Venezuela. All of the music here, however, is eminently engaging. Several of the composers obviously are highly aware of, and incorporate, a variety of idioms including jazz, indigenous music, and even a touch of rock and New Age--or so it seems to this listener--leading to some highly original moments. None of these twentieth century composers seems at all adverse to writing music with recognizeable (and at times even memorable) tunes--although this may make them quite unacceptable to certain "modernists." Maximo Pujol seems to have the most original voice, and shows both energy and wit in his compositions. The music by Saul comes closest to being bland, but it too has its ingenious moments. Victor Villandangos--who I had never heard of before--proves to be a fine guitarist who produces a generally full and pleasing tone and shows highly accomplished technique. A little more tonal variation on his part might have lent even more interest to the album, but it is hard to fault it in any way, especially at its bargain price. Even the sound is quite good. Along with the Villa-Lobos album by Norbert Kraft, this is one of the finest guitar albums issued by this label--and would do any full-price label proud as well.

If you're interested in the music of the great Manitas De Plata, buy another album. The music on here is wonderful, but the sound quality is awful. So overdriven at times that it is hard to listen to. I should probably give it less stars, but I don't want it to reflect on the music.

"Manitas de Plata is a prodigy among virtuoso as far as acoustic guitar is concerned: his abilities; the rythms and the melodies he produces are so, that you hardly believe that such overwhelming mastery at the guitar is possible. When Manitas de Plata plays the guitar, it is like somebody with faith praying intently." Gervais

You may like the style or not, but if you instinctively go for the sweetness of acoustic guitar, you will definitely be overawed. In fact you may be overawed indepedently of your musical preference; if you are somehow moved by virtuosity.

Been there, Done that!.......2007-01-13

Wish to add a correction to the comment made by the Irish reviewer: I was a teenager going to school in Montpellier [Southern (Midi) France] in 1952 and Manitas de Plata was already famous as a flamenco puro guitarist who lived in this Midi de la France. In fact, he and I shared a same classical teacher: Madame Garrido (Manitas went to her only to get ideas from the classical guitar repertoire for his falsetas). Later, the great master Pablo Picasso, still living in exile near Nice, often invited Manitas de Plata to his mansion to play flamenco for him. I later attended Columbia University in New York where I studied flamenco with Juan de la Mata and Carlos Ramos in Washington, DC, both were founders of the famous La Zambra restaurant in New York where there was an intimate alcove where de la Mata (who has made transcriptions of Sabicas' music) played. Once I was proud of being selected to play solo flamenco, representing Spain, on stage at George Washington U. in an International Night dedicated to the Diplomatic Corps in DC, and later played Spanish music background for a group of poets reading the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca at La Casa de las Bellas Artes in San Francisco.

Ricardo Baliardo, also known as Manitas de Plata, started to paly in early 60s and laid the foundation for Gipsy Kings, formed by the sons of José Reyes (his vocalist) and members
of the Baliardo family.
I need only three letters to describe Manitas guitar. WOW. This qualifies to become one's instant personal favorite.
This CD will introduce you to a hidden legend of gypsy guitar god, Manitas de Plata. First, one should NOT compare or expect the class of Paco de Lucia et al., why? the reason is the music itself, where Paco guitar is extremely fine Manitas on other hand is raw. Its more similar to gypsy guitar from Andalucía and the spanish gypsies from southern france.

Heart wrenching!soul slaying! this is the flamenco cd of the century...and probably into the next..Don't know what flamenco was like in the early 1900's, surely not this, but this is the one CD for me...love, happiness, soul, passion, guitar strumming like nobody's business!! voices that come from from beyond -I know I've heard them before, but not quite like this..I know these voices, I know them...

Flamenco at its best.......2004-07-01

The guitarist is Manitas De Plata. Much better than Carlos Montoya, imo. Good recording and very clean playing. Well worth the 4 bucks. If you like flamenco or spanish guitar this is one of those albums you'll listen to again and again. Some of the tracks are the same as Montoya plays but it's good to hear them from a different player. He is a cleaner player and the recording is good.

wonderful recording.......2000-02-21

I've listened to this beatiful recording. Both pieces and performers are really great and I hope we can get other album of these artists in the near future. It is very interesting to know that there are artists interested to commission and perform new works, specially from Latinamerica. Franzetti's and Romero's works are wonderful and one has the pleasure to listen to their works in their world premiere recordings. Congratulations to the artists! Labels: take note of these artists!

Beautiful, sophisticated music. A truly great recording........1999-08-15

I've been listening to classical music for twenty years, and I can't believe I never came across these Latin American compositions. It's wonderful, first-rate stuff, very modern AND very tonal and lyrical. The Franzetti is an amazing composition, sophisticated, well-paced, beautifully orchestrated. The Brouwer is a wonderfully crafted chamber piece, with the exotic sound of the marimba combined with the guitar and strings. Spirals, by Manly Romero, is a remarkably inspired piece by a young composer. The Guastavino is a little gem. Guitarrist Sergio Puccini is profoundly lyrical, and Robert Schwartz is a dazzling virtuoso of the piano (why haven't we heard him until now?). Flutist Angela Koregelos' playing in the Ginastera is mesmerizing. Maestro Moscovich is clearly at home with this difficult repertoire. He makes the Camerata sound expressive, full of conviction, engaging the listener throughout. A pleasure to listen to, again and again. I am into Latin American orchestral music now, thanks to this CD.

Amazing musicality and choice of repertoire!.......1999-02-22

This CD contains several gems in its repertoire, especially the "Concierto del Plata" by Carlos Franzetti. This work incorporates the best elements of music from both Argentina and the USA and is well played by its soloist, Sergio Puccini, and the San Francisco Camerata Americana, conducted by Jose Luis Moscovich. The other works are expertly conducted by Maestro Moscovich and one, composed by Manly Romero, features the excellent pianist Robert Schwartz. This is a must-buy CD for enthusiasts of Latin American music.
