not PC but funny.......2006-11-20
However, the material is not PC at all. There are jokes about aids, drunk driving etc... One has to not mind that kind of thing or over look it to appreciate the good stuff.
I'm a nasty pope, I'M A NASTY POPE!!!!.......2005-11-17
Filthy, sacrilegious, and brilliant!.......2005-09-13
Be warned though. His material on such issues as women, sex, drugs, homosexuality, AIDS, religion, Christianity and drunk driving will not go over well with everyone. (Having lost a cousin to AIDS and considering that I knew an entire family that was killed by a drunk driver, I certainly do not find myself laughing at those jokes.) Despite all of that, "Have You Seen Me Lately" shows Sam Kinison at his brilliant best. He was certainly offensive but few can deny his that he was a comic genius in his own right.
There will never be another like him.......2005-07-25
Barriers and lines didn't exist in Kinison's world and his comedy reflects that. He was refreshing for his time and much of what he said then still rings true today.
I loved his take on religion and his constantly pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of tele-evangelists (oh, how he would have a field day in 2005!), even though he was a former Pentecostal preacher.
Sam was in a class all by himself. Many people like to group Andrew Dice Clay in with him but Kinison once said to Howard Stern that the Diceman was basically working his older material. I agree with that assessment. Clay was more into beyond raunchy humor (focusing on sex, sex, and more sex). Even though Kinison did his fair share of raunchiness, he also joked about many other topics as well.
I was only 16 when Sam died but I really miss that scream and his no holds barred attitude. I do get sad whenever I hear Anthrax's "I'm the Man" and hear that scream at the beginning and end of the song but Sam lives on through his comedy and his fans' love and appreciation of him.
Have You Seen Me Lately?.......2005-07-07
verbal assault on American culture, From Jerry Lewis to Jeasus. This CD is not for the easily offended, But for those brave enough to listen you will be rewarded with a true look into the twisted mind of a comic genius.

She's got a lot to be vain about............2007-06-07
The music here is great, though, as I said, the "heart on sleeve" approach may a bit much for some. Carly's fans have shared a lot of pain with her down the years, but she's given much joy in return. I loved the title cut and "Life Is Eternal". Thank goodness that "Better Not Tell Her" is not about me...my wife would never believe it was all innocent. Enjoy...this one is a winner.

One of my favourites.......2006-05-22
The first track and hit single was "Better Not Tell Her," a melancholy tune in which Simon is giving advice to a former lover to not share everything about her romance with him, presumably in hopes of saving his new relationship. It's a very catchy song and is currently one of my favourites. Following that is "Didn't I?," a piano-driven ballad in which Simon muses and asks questions about a failed relationship. The title track follows, being a little bit too easygoing for the subject matter. The song is basically about a woman living in a delusional state, and then asking the listener to not "wake me unless you love me." The singer is sort of commenting on her own ill emotional and social state in a moderately sarcastic way, but the music makes it sound like a day on the beach. It still manages to be an impressive song. (A bit of trivia--the music was featured in the 1990 Meryl Streep film "Postcards From the Edge.") Fourth on the album is a song that I never seem to tire of, the spiritual "Life is Eternal." Simon says the song's chorus is based on a Christian prayer she heard, while the verses seem to ponder what happens when we die. It's very touching, and instrumentally effective with the heavy drums towards the end as well as the layers of synthesized (?) strings. Rounding out side one is the powerful "Waiting at the Gate." Simon is singing to someone dear to her with a drug problem who is entering a rehab clinic, and does so in a mature and effective way. Too bad this song didn't get that much exposure compared to some of the others.
Side two starts off with "Happy Birthday," a somewhat cynical look at middle age and life afterwards. "Holding Me Tonight" is an easygoing serenade to a lover and was moderately successful on the Adult Contemporary charts, while "It's Not Like Him" is a bit too cliche for me. I also think it sounds a little too much like "Two Hot Girls" from the "Coming Around Again" album. "Don't Wrap It Up" is an uptempo number about an older woman being unafraid and hungry for love. Not one of my favourites, but I like how the narrator's age is not seen as a bad thing. It seems that most pop songs are sung from a younger perspective. "Fisherman's Song" features Judy Collins, and is a gentle, lullaby-ish waltz. The album ends on a strong note with "We Just Got Here," a song using summer's end as a metaphor for growing older. The song really does sound like summer is ending, and once again addresses one of the most prominent themes of the album--age and moving on. It's sad but hopeful at the same time, and doesn't sound like it would fit any other place but at the end of the album.
This album is a good example of one of the things that made Carly Simon so famous in the first place--solid songwriting. Not every song is a winner, but each does contain some kind of strength. This definitely ranks as one of my favourite Carly albums in her long discography.

New York's indie pop sensation, Ivy, debuts their amazing craftsmanship with this EP. Each song is a gem. Originally released, 1994. Re-issued by Unfiltered Records, 2003.Customer Reviews:
Just wish it all away.......2005-04-09
It opens with the bouncy, catchy "Wish It all Away," with Dominique Durand singing about someone who is too sensitive to deal with the nastier things in life. "Breathe the scent of a world gone sour/Turn your head as the last spring flower dies now/Close your eyes now/And wish it all away," she croons over the guitar melody.
What follows is just as good: the rippling "Twisting," the quicksilver rhythms of "I Hate December," the solid guitar pop of "Can't Even Fake It," and finally wrapping up with the mildly distorted Edwyn Collins ballad, "I Guess I'm Just A Little Too Sensitive," a song that emphasizes piano and guitar, lyricism and melody above catchiness.
Ivy is one of those bands where, as a start, you can check out any of their albums -- it doesn't really matter. While they do have an evolving sound, that sound is quite similar from one album to the next. It's anyone's guess how they have managed not to stagnate.
Guitar pop is the best description of Ivy's sound, with a bit of keyboard thrown in. "Lately" shows the band's versatility as well, with catchy pop that you can dance to alongside the ethereal ballads. Dominique Durand's vocals are the crowning touch -- very pretty, strong and flexible, although admittedly they don't get too much of a workout here.
"Lately" was an auspicious debut EP for Ivy, and is a good starting point for fans and newcomers alike. Lovely.
Don't miss this! The ultimate in pop music........2004-04-04

Album Description
"Ravishingly melodic!" -- Ani DifrancoBoots is an urban odyssey, seen through the eyes of a girl. Unlike Noe's previous records, in which she usually seemed to be singing as characters she had invented-- (a servant to a sorcerer, a doomed Cessna pilot, a dying transvestite...), Boots is strongly rooted in Noe's own experience as a woman. "In so many of my favorite stories," says Noe,"these troubled men dream of finding a woman to save them. You read stories like that and you're troubled, and you start dreaming of the same thing. Then one day you wake up and say, `Wait, I am the woman in those stories. But I'm troubled! So now who's going to save me?' I think that's where Boots begins."
Boots is a living room effort, born of 6 months of sonic experimentation and obsessive tinkering. Arrangements are lush, featuring electric guitars, violin, keyboards, old synths, drums, and many sounds that producer Todd Sickafoose and Venable can't remember how they made.

Climb Away.......2006-04-14
The exquisite combination of her stunning lyrics and haunting melodies make Ms. Venable one of the very greatest singer-songwriters I have ever heard. How many times can one fall in love?
Incredible.......2004-03-08
She gets us right out of the gate with title track, "Boots" which is a stunning song. It's got a great low drum beat, that's barely there, but so powerful. The eerie backing vocals are chill inducing
"Prettiness" makes great use of the light picking on the guitar and her voice floating over the top is sublime. She'd probably hate that I say the song is pretty, but it is. I love it when artists take a sound and then put words to it that are disparate. This is a lovely flowing song but the lyrics start out:
She utilizes this method quite frequently, actually. The music is gorgeous, the lyrics almost harsh, a beautiful combination.
Well, I won't go over every song because they're all gems.
If intelligent atmospheric "pop" is your cup o' tea pick this one up.
Once in a long while.......2003-05-30
It is rare these days to meet musicians whose sole goal is to do music and to perform. And I can assure that Miss Venable's desire is so. Or else, why would she pour it out in a 50 people charity concert? We all left the place dizzy... The song boots will crack your heart open.
A Quiet Masterpiece.......2003-02-16
Noe Venable wants to take you on a journey, and once you start there's no turning back. The compositions are superb, and for old Noe fans, the remakes of a couple older tunes (like "Stolen Thing") will impress. The arrangements are simple on the surface, but the instrumentation has a rich, deep, feel that envelopes you (I highly recommend studio quality headphones for at least one listen). Alan Lin's violin work is moody and sly, and Todd Sickafoose has fun with just about any instrument he can get his hands on. In addition, some talented guests appear on "Boots" to fill in some extra notes.
Venable is a poetess, composer, singer, and actor -- and she makes it all come together in "Boots."
Oh, and lest we forget the singing. It's astonishing. A soaring and sure voice you won't soon forget. Even better is that, unlike so many of her peers, Noe Venable doesn't try to impress with vocal acrobatics or gimmicks. She just sings, and in a way that can send shivers up your spine, bring a tear to your eye, or a lump to your throat.
This is powerful stuff. Don't procrastinate: Buy it NOW.

Off to a good start.......2003-10-20
It was pretty good. Each song has a hook that draws you in to listen. The melodies are fun to listen to, and as a bass player, the bass lines are simple, yet solid. This album seems just as fresh now as it did back when it was first released. It is also interesting to notice that although they have gotten better over the years their keeping to their roots and style has not changed.
For a first effort this is pretty good and you get a cover tune as well. For the money this is a cd one should own.

Frances Alda: The Complete Victor Recordings, 1909-15
Manufacturer: Romophone ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000034D59 Release Date: 1999-11-16 |
Customer Reviews:
A fitting tribute to a too little-known artist.......1999-11-28
Alda was a student of the celebrated Mathilde Marchesi, who also taught Nellie Melba. Indeed, at Alda's audition, Marchesi told her husband, "Salvatore, I have found the new Melba!" Alda was in fact good enough to present a threat to the more established diva, who insisted that Oscar Hammerstein chose between the two of them: "Either Alda or Myself!" runs the famous telegram.
Mme. Alda was one of the most colorful operatic personalities of the early twentieth century. She was married to Giulio Gatti-Cassazza, head of the Met at the time, but she did not abuse her influence as a more capricious diva might have. She had a dry, caustic wit, as evidenced in her autobiography, "Men, Women, and Tenors" (a thoroughly enjoyable read, by the way).
These recordings present the voice behind the legend, and an excellent voice it is, too. A lyric soprano of substantial weight, she was careful to remain well inside the lyric fach, venturing only a single Aida as an experiment. Her favorite role was Mimi, and it shows: her two arias from "La Boheme" are magical. Her high notes glitter, and the low range is full and round. The voice is even throughout the registers, a hallmark of the Marchesi school.
The transfers, as on all Romophone editions, are expertly done, allowing the voice to come through with added freshness and clarity. A wonderful set, one of the best of the series.

Kiri Proves she can "crossover".......2004-08-08
one is probably "He Was Beautiful." I have had a very hard time
obtaining copies of this CD due to it being out of print. My
mother's friends all want copies since all the songs are basically love songs. Some say Malcolm was a poor choice for a
duet partner, however without him the lovely title song would never have been written or sung. That would have been a real loss because it tends to be a favorite. He wrote it for Kiri
as a part of their work together. So, I think if he had any weaknesses he made up for them by writing that song. It's a shame it isn't a choice people can listen to on this site. Actually, after writing this I went back and listened to the selections. They are all scrambled, so that the 1st one is Heart to Heart which isn't even on the possible list of songs to preview!! Overall, a lovely CD of beautiful and familiar songs sung very
well.
