Product Description
'Arena' contains all the very best themes written by maestro Morricone for the soundtracks of a lot of Italian & international movies. The album was recorded at the Arena in Verona during a memorable concert where Morricone himself conducted a 90 element orchestra (Roma Sinfonietta) & 100 choir singers of the Coro di Roma. 12 tracks. WEA. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting side step.......2007-03-20

This is a 2 CD set. The first CD features Deep Purple doing live versions of some of their album songs.None of it is bad but none of it really anything more spectacular than live material Deep Purple has done on it's other releases. The 2nd CD is live progressive rock with Deep Purple more actively interacting with the Orchestra. It is very intense material with excellent performances by both band and orchestra.

4 out of 5 stars Starting to dig it!.......2005-05-16

Before Metallica, Deep purple was the second band to do an arrangement with an orchestra.(the moody blues the first). At first I didn't know what to think. But, after listening to it a few more times I dig it. Maybe not for the true metalhead. If you like classical music, you'll surely enjoy this one.

    3 out of 5 stars Curious.......2005-03-17

I have to admit I have very little knowledge of classical music though I do appreciate it at times. This album always intrigued me even before I actually heard it. Being a fan of Purple for many years I had obviously heard of the album and its reputation as a difficult thing for most rock fans to get into. It's definitely worth a purchase only for fans of the band but at a much cheaper price. The legendary Mach II lineup of the band makes its album debut here and while it isn't a true Purple album, each band member gets to shine in his own distinct way. Even Ian Gillan gets to sing a tiny bit during the second movement. This two disc edition is a much more reasonable buy then previous versions may have been due to the inclusion of Purple's warmup set before the concerto, featuring great versions of "Hush" (the BEST version), "Wring That Neck" and possibly the world premier of "Child In Time" although I'm not as crazy with this version as the 'Made In Japan' (could be my favorite DP song of all-time live or studio). Not for metal fans but for curious Purple fans only. Purple, 1969, Royal Albert Hall and an Orchestra, it doesn't get classier than that. Pretty ironic that their next album would be the absolutely devastating 'In Rock"!! No Malcolm Arnold here!

3 out of 5 stars Why is this Version Cut?.......2004-06-14

One of the more frustrating things about "remasters" is that sometimes they are "re-edits". While this release gives us one more track in the pre-concerto performance ("Hush"), as well as the previously unreleased encore, the editors of this CD have cut more than 2 minutes from the third movement of the concerto!!

While this cut was mainly from the lengthy drum solo, there was certainly enough room on the disc for the full version.

The now out of print import CD has the complete version and sounds equally as good as the remaster.

This "remaster" smacks of revisionist history. For shame!

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars.... This Album Exposed Me To Classical Music.......2004-04-29

My oldest sister got the original vinyl album. I was intruiged by the cover (a glorious color photo of an empty Royal Albert Hall) and inside picture (a grainy black and white picture of Deep Purple surrounded by the orchestra in front of an overflowing Albert Hall). When I heard the album, I couldn't quite believe my ears. Here's the orchestra creating beautful sounds, there comes the band crashing in with heavy metal! And it all somehow hangs together!

Recorded 35 years ago, two-thirds of that magical evening is now avaible (still missing: the opener Sixth Symphony of conductor and composer Malcolm Arnold). After the opening symphony, Deep Purple then came on for a short 3 song set (which was not featured on the vinyl album, but is included on the CD reissue). That set is incredible: Hush, the instrumental Wreck That Neck, and the then-still unreleased, unrecorded and unknown Child in Time (explaining why there was no reaction from the crowd when Ian Gillan announces the song).

Last but not least comes the Jon Lord-composed "Concerto for Group and Orchestra". The 1st Movement is still my favorite, because it takes it time setting the table and then magically making the way for an instrumental hard rocking jam by the band, with a blazing solo by Ritchie Blackmore. The 2nd Movement is my least fave of the three, as it is too timid (and reminding me at one point of the Moody Blues, argh!!). The 3rd Movement however is explosive, and includes an amazing drum solo by Ian Paice, only to then go to an incredible explosive final of band and orchstra. Wow!

A year after this album Deep Purple started its string of now-classic albums "In Rock", "Fireball" and "Machine Head". However, the "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" album is just as adventurous in its own right. I "borrowed" the album from my sister, and sure am glad to have it on CD now. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two. While what resulted--specifically, their Concerto for Group and Orchestra--was pretty fearful stuff, it did, for better or for worse, pave the way for a generation of classically influenced heavy-rock bands: King Crimson, Yes, and Queen, among others. The concerto on this live CD appears alongside a bunch of the Purple's more genteel songs they played at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that celebrated their 30th anniversary of their first appearance there. Ian Gillan, who can still do a creditable impression of a bomber revving for takeoff, shares vocals with Ronnie James Dio and Sam Brown. --Andrew Mueller

Even if you are not a Deep Purple fan this one is worth the investment. Whilst a little of the visual could be improved it's all there and the audio is of good quality. Butterfly Ball is a real hoot and if you don't enjoy that then you don't like music!
I reall contrast to the 1969 version of the Concertos where the conductor atually enjoys the whole experience.
      Go for it!

      2 out of 5 stars I was VERY disappointed..........2003-08-12

The Amazon reviewer was right: the first several songs on CD 1 was very laid back, reminding me of Division-Bell-Era Pink Floyd. (Boring!) Didn't hear drums until the third or fourth track, then it was ANYTHING but rock beats. What made S & M so great is that Metallica didn't write BALLADS or NOVELTY SONGS for their production: they rocked on with what they had on hand. Deep Purple wrote some of the hardest rocking songs in the R&R/Heavy Metal library (Mandrake Root, Space Truckin, Child in Time), and so it's MHO that they should have employed them as orchestra pieces: overall, they should have rocked the whole time.

Of course, Steve Morse was an odd substitute for Richie Blackmore, but stalwarts Ian Gillian and Jon Lord was in good form that night. The record doesn't start consistently rocking until WRING THAT NECK at the end of CD 1. (Kind of thinking about it, I would have liked to wring the necks of those who made the decisions to program and preserve this somewhat idiotic concert...ha, just kidding.)

On CD 2, I thought the concerto was pretty well executed (esp. the first movement) and the last couple songs on the album (esp Ted the Mechanic and Smoke on the Water) were well orchestrated and played. I guess I would give this album 4 stars if they only released CD2 and lowered the price.

5 out of 5 stars no it is not true, this band is great.......2002-09-26

the reviewers below dont know what would they say,......this cd is a remake of concerto for group orchestra what the band did in 1969. the place took in the royal albert hall london 1999. I saw the performance in germany 2000 with the george enescu orchestra.
The result is amazing,...buy the cd!

2 out of 5 stars Go Back To MACHINEHEAD!.......2002-09-22

This is NOT Deep Purple nor was the experience I had listening to them in concert (Summer 2002) -Nashville. This is a watered- down version of one of the best bands to ever grace the planet.Dio is a great vocalist and "smoked" them live in Nashville. Steve Morse is a great guitarist but his bluesy rendition of the poweful rhythm guitar parts in Smoke On the Water were a joke! ... your instrumental that was a question mark for the new album was the best thing I heard that night!! ... Dio and the Scorpions were great!

not worth the money! just because your a fan of steve morse, dosn't mean that your also a fan of d p. here they jumped on the trendy band wagon like yngwie, kansas scorpion, etc.i paid twice the amount as the regular cd for stress fest xtra tracks only to here i xtra song, thatwasn't even written by steve.here,it's almost the same situation.the only true s m .song,is t i o a t p.how many times does he have to re-record this and play it exactly like in 1978.i wish that s m would go back to doing solo work.his music was as interessting as george lynch, satch, vai, etc.i gave this 2 stars because i like steve, but that dosn't necessarilly mean that i like orchestra music,or deep purple.

      4 out of 5 stars Deep Purple's little-known classical experiment.......2007-07-27

Concerto for Group and Orchestra (1969.)

      INTRODUCTION:
1969 saw the Deep Purple doing one of their most interesting, and most forgotten, musical experiments. The band joined forced with composer Malcolm Arnold to perform a rock/symphony fusion that was the brainchild of DP keyboardist Jon Lord. The recordings of this widely-forgotten event in the band's history were released on vinyl the following year.

      OVERVIEW:
Concerto for Group and Orchestra was released in 1970. The album featured the classic Mark Two lineup of Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord, and Blackmore. This was the FIRST EVER recording to feature the Mark Two lineup. The original LP only consisted of the three symphony movements, with no encores. The LP had Movement One on Side One and Movement Three on Side Two. Movement Two was split between the sides.

      REVIEW:
Hard to believe this is the same Deep Purple lineup that would record the phenomenally-rocking Made in Japan just a couple of years later. This sounds like a completely different band than the one that would surface just months after this album's release, due to the release of Deep Purple In Rock. This was Deep Purple's final recording with Jon Lord in creative control, before Ritchie Blackmore became the creative powerhouse in the band. Lord's last stand as the big man in charge of things is an incredible-sounding record that stands in a class all its own. It's a shame this is Deep Purple's forgotten live album, because the band does some amazing stuff on here. Malcolm Arnold's orchestral conducting sounds great, and combined with the rock stylings of Deep Purple, you've got one hell of an album on your hands. The problem is, though, it's a horribly uneven recording. This isn't like the orchestral albums Scorpions and Metallica did in recent years. Whereas on those recent releases from those equally-notable rock giants, they and the orchestra played with each other, most of the time here it's just the opposite. The problem here is that the orchestra will be playing their part for minutes on end, and then the band comes in, and then the orchestra's back, and so forth. This could have worked so much better if the band and the orchestra could have played together throughout the entire recording. Likewise, the album features portions in which Ian Gillan sings (making his lead vocal debut with Deep Purple, might I add.) Unfortunately, his vocals seem out of place in this mostly-classical flavored album. I was debating between whether to give this album a three or a four out of five. The album, while horribly uneven and imbalanced is still enjoyable. Ultimately I've decided to give the band the benefit of the doubt on this one. It's a good album despite the issues. But it's ONLY for die-hard fans of Deep Purple, or people into this classical-rock fusion business. And even then, there are better examples of it out there.

      OVERALL:
Definitely not the Deep Purple Mark Two you know and love! But a worthy, progressive effort through and through. Jon Lord's last stand as the man in charge of the band is the band's most forgotten recording of all, but just the same, stands as a testament to his creative greatness. I recommend this album, but only to die-hard Deep Purple fans and big fans of the classical-rock fusion thing.

      EDITION NOTES:
There are numerous editions of this album out there, despite it being out of print in the States. Mostly they add in bonus tracks that were recorded the night of the big performance, but not released on the vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Deep Purple album...........2007-06-29

In talking with some amazon friends of mine, I realised that this is the only Deep Purple album I listen to frequently. I have the original import version (one CD) with Wring that Neck and Child in Time, in addition to the Concerto. Deep Purple was a prog rock band when they started out, and here is one of the most grandiose examples of progressive rock. The piece is composed by Jon Lord, with lyrics in the 2nd movement by Ian Gillian. The piece is conducted by Malcolm Arnold, who was a very well known composer and conductor during his life. I love Deep Purple's ambition here, and this is really a great album. It's rather a shame that Deep Purple got somewhat simplistic in their later career, as I really don't like anything else they've ever done. I also feel that Ian Paice is one of rock's most underrated drummers. His solo on the 3rd movement is fantastic, much better than more well known solos that were made at the same time (specifically Ginger Baker's solo in the live version of Toad). The 2 live tracks are very good too. Wring that Neck was never before available until this album, and that's a good thing. I like to see Deep Purple/Jon Lord have a 2nd concerto someday.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant piece by Deep Purple.......2006-08-28

I once owned the vinyl in 1973 while I was stationed in Minot N.D. but it was stolen. I never thought of it again until I rediscovered the group in recent years. I found and bought the DVD but it was edited not to my satisfaction. I have finally found a CD of this brilliant performance. I like everything about the composition, and I just wish I could've been there in person.I have found that I enjoy it more as I've gotten older. Yes, Deep Purple was much more than "Smoke on the Water"

3 out of 5 stars Sounds like a movie score.......2004-11-15

This Concerto looks like an unfinished work and jumps from one theme to other, much like Claude Debussy's "Images". Among classical music, the closest relatives to this kinda music are movie's soundtracks. In fact, First movement would fit a superhero film, second movement a medieval-ambiance one, and third movement a movie about gladiator competitions in the Roman empire. However, the mixture is not perfect.

If you like this, you will certainly like the more developed song "April", buried in Deep Purple's third album, "Deep Purple". I think April would have fit in the Concerto as a fourth movement, and would have been the best movement.

Also, you might also like the similar symphonic/rock mixture present in "Hey Joe", from the album "Shades of Deep Purple". Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother" (1970) seems to have been inspired by this Concerto, but in Atom Heart Mother a third element is added: weird noises. The result is not as good as that which Deep Purple attained one year before. It's quite a pity Deep Purple changed their trends and went plain heavy metal from then on.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Purple & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.......2004-04-08

I bought this vinyl record back in the early 70's. It is one heck of a performance, and the guitar work is unbelievable. I wouldn't part with this record, unless you would want to trade a vintage Stratocaster for it. Then I might consider it.

5 out of 5 stars Way back when rock music was still progressing!.......2003-01-23

This was back when rock music was still progressing. The strength of an orchestra working with the power of a rock band. Deep Purple were the first band to integrate rock music with classical. The idea came from Jon Lord, Deep Purple's keyboardist.
The band have the muscle to avoid being buried by orchestration, yet manage to join forces with the orchestra. The outcome is a magnificent union that will delight those who care at all about music.
This set was recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 24th, 1969 and was divided into three movements:
      1st Movement: Allegretto.
2nd Movement: Allegro with lyrics by lead singer Ian Gillan.
3rd Movement: . Vivace presto which integrates a solo for Ian Paice on drums.
For only having two complete rehearsals, the outcome is absolutely amazing.

(Important note) Make sure to get the current release (import only, as of early 2003) which has been completely re-mixed to sound 100% better than the old CD and/or LP, it also includes a nice big booklet full of pictures and if that's not enough for you, a great bonus disc of the band performing a three song set before the Concerto.

Track 1: Hush - Perhaps a better version than the one we always hear on the radio, with Ian Gillan's incredible vocal delivery. Sounding almost like early Elvis at times.
Track 2: Wring that Neck - A smoking instrumental with room to play for guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and keyboardist Jon Lord. I must also mention the solid rhythm section of Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums, they just drive this piece along. Nice.
Track 3: Child In Time - The band were just about to record this "soon to be classic" for the upcoming album "In Rock". It might be one of the finest live version they ever did.
It's so new to them that they play it incredibly tight, and Gillan keeps his famous screams slightly off the mic, so not to scare the classical side of the crowd, but it makes for a great reverb sound. Those three tracks give you about half an hour of warm up. The audience sounds like they enjoyed the opening set. Fabulous!
The Concerto for Group and Orchestra was and is an excellent idea from JON LORD, he is a true hero. Thanks Jon.

      5 out of 5 stars Mobberley: Piano Concerto/Marimba Concerto/Arena.......2000-07-02

James Mobberley is without a doubt an important figure in contemporary American music (A Rome Prize Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship are amongst his numerous accomplishments). This, the first all Mobberley recording of his orchestral works, is an excellent introduction to a younger generation composer whose music is sure to become more prominent in the future. The Piano Concerto, performed with Richard Cass as the soloist, is a musical exploration of the emotional side of parenting - excitement, fun, chaos, sleeplessness and amazingly soft moments. Musically, this work is both tender and unpredictable. The Concerto for Marimba (Four Hands) was written for (and performed by) Laurence Kaptain and Marimba Yajalon, an ensemble of four percussionist who perform on an authentic folk instrument indigenous to Chiapas and the southernmost state in Mexico. The work explores late twentieth century writing for both the orchestra and the marimba until the end where the orchestra encapsulates the sound of the traditional marimba in twentieth century sounds. Arena is the result of two years of collaboration between Mobberley and choreographer Todd Bolender. The ballet music suggests rather than describes, "evokes emotions rather than portrays action, and which mixes despair and redemption in equal measure through the use of cyclic forms". This is an excellent recording of great music and a "must have" for anyone's collection.
