Nineteen eighty-seven's Good Morning, Vietnam was a turning point for Robin Williams, garnering the comic his first Academy Award nomination and leveraging him into the first rank of American film stars. As directed by Barry Levinson, Williams imbues the "true life" story of Armed Forces Radio rebel Adrian Cronauer with his patented machine-gun comic banter, undercut by dollops of now equally familiar tragi-comic bathos. But contrary to the tired hit parade we've come to expect from period soundtracks, the '60s music Williams's character spins here is often a refreshing surprise, drawing from trashy garage-band chic ("Liar Liar" by the Castaways), underexposed British Invasion hits (the Searchers' "Sugar and Spice," "Game of Love" by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders), and relatively obscure American chart hits ("Five O'Clock World" by the Vogues, the Rivieras' "Warm California Sun"), all of it gratuitously punctuated by Williams's manic DJ rantings. The inspired revival of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" also became one of the 1980s' most unlikely hits. --Jerry McCulley

I bought this because I loved the movie. I like the songs and the comedy interspersed is OK. The sound quality is quite poor though.

Robin Williams is at his best as a "DJ". If you like oldies, you will like this CD. Fairly good mixture of songs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Morning Vietnam Soundtrack.......2005-08-12

I LOVE this soundtrack! I had originally purchased it when the movie first came out but had lost that copy. This CD has great music that even my teenager and preteen enjoyed. It brings back a lot of great memories of the past and gives the family a chance to connect with songs that everyone can sing along with.

5 out of 5 stars This old sixties stuff rocks!.......2005-05-31

I love James Brown, and I love Liar Liar, by the Castaways, and I just enjoyed this album. The old sixties stuff is great, and doesn't make you fall asleep. It's the unscary stuff from the sixties that we (sadly) forget about. And the bits of dialouge from the movie in between...Hilarious. This is a great soundtrack, and I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a good c.d. in their house.

4 out of 5 stars Back to 1970, seriously?.......2007-08-01

When I first heard this album, I had to double check and make sure that it was a 2007 release, and not a 1972 release. Yes this band sounds exactly like they came out of the Vietnam War era. That's not a bad thing. The music here is still fresh, but I'm not sure if the band ever is able to establish their own sound. By naming themselves Vietnam and playing music from that era, the band has doomed their self-titled album. It's good, but I'm still wondering why this band was born in the wrong decade.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-05-08

Interesting...I like the hippie 70s influence, although it is a little mellow for my taste. Decent overall.

4 out of 5 stars buy it, i wish more new music was like this.......2007-03-17

Got this after reading the article in rolling stone. Was turned off at first by the fact that it appeared that they are behind their time. Then i came to appreciate their uniqueness and musicianship. The guitar work was not phenominal, but it was impressive. The lyrics are mainly political/metaphorical, tho nothing that hasnt been done before. Other lyrics are about living hard and being anti-establishment. They are blues/rock based, laid back, and fluid. Most songs are written around guitar tho one has orchestra (eww, stripped down is best). They have a unique, easy going sound that revolves around hazy and loose sounding guitar. Very nice.

They are more than a hippie-revival band and are rather sophisticated for coming from a american blues sound. Its really a shame that they will never get big in the new pretty-boy emo music scene. Tho they wont be famous, they seem to get satisfaction from saying "F-- you" to the polished corporate-dominated music industry, and i appreciate that more than anything.

Please buy this and support them, they deserve the money for going against the times. Hope they find success somehow.

4 out of 5 stars Really good!.......2007-03-01

Being a big fan of Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, Lightnin' Hopkins, and other folk, southern, roots music...this is a great fit. Definitely good driving music with the windows down and good Summertime music. I would recommend picking this album up and giving it a try.

4 out of 5 stars One step back equals two steps forward..........2007-02-20

Vietnam is finally starting to get the recognition they deserve and it is about time. This band is refreshingly straight forward in the sound they lay down. It has been called psychedelic, and is such, but in the vein of the Velvet Underground. The music is raw and powerful. If you have never heard it imagine a cross between The Jim Carroll Band and mid seventy's Lou Reed. The lyrical content helps carry this description further with constant references to hipster city life that will leave your searching for your old copy of "The Basketball Diaries." A listen will transport you back to addled all night parties and smokey concert halls. Fans of edgy blues and psychedelia do yourself a favor and be sure to pick up this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant Vocals and Versatile Vibes from Vietnam.......2007-07-15

On the Rough Guide musical tour of the world, next stop is Vietnam! And as usual they've excelled in offering a CD full of great music that's evocatively representative, widely ranging, and eminently listenable. From contemporary pop songs to time-honored folk lyrics, from popularly traditional melodies to globally-influenced innovations, this CD will take you on a crash tour of one of the most exciting musical landscapes on the planet (and the stuff people in Vietnam are really listening to). If you've never heard Vietnamese music before, you can't find a better intro than this album. On the other hand, if you've been a big fan of Vietnam's incredible music for years, you'll appreciate this fine selection and find a few surprises--Vietnamese Blues? "Rider in the Sky" on the dan bao recorded poolside in Saigon? You'll only hear it here! But every track is golden in its own way, lovingly handpicked by the compiler as is standard practice with Rough Guide CDs.

Speaking of the compiler, Paul Fisher's liner notes are well-written and do the job nicely of introducing each performer and singer while contextualizing and placing the music within the overall musical culture of Vietnam--no stuffy musicological details, just the right amount of background so that the listener can pretty much know and appreciate what's playing. And the tracks are introduced in the order that they appear on the CD (a common sense arrangement that some Rough Guide CDs have gotten a bit too fancily experimental with), so it's easy to follow along with the music--at least the first time, and with this music, it'll be the first time of many!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece - nothing else in blues quite like this.......2006-10-14

I've just bought this CD for the 4th time - along with Jack Dupree's "Blues From The Gutter", it's the one I give away when I really want to give, and turn someone on to the blues.

It contains JBs last 2 albums before his untimely death in 1967, and represents the full flowering of his groundbreaking African Hunch style. JB was a popular Chicago electric blues musician who gradually evolved a new acoustic sound - syncretising a lot of what had come before, from gritty Delta guitar to barrelhouse-piano style syncopation, and more than a touch of gospel - but sounding fresh and modern; he was moving forwards not back. Sadly this style seems to have died with him; the world has not caught up yet.

All tracks have JB on acoustic guitar and vocals (those words hardly doing justice to what he does with them); many with Freddie Below on drums (inventor of Rock & Roll no matter what anyone else says); and a few with Willie Dixon's atmospheric growling on backup vocal (Willie also produced).

There's nothing else quite like this, though JB's 50's and early 60's Chicago recordings gave some hints of what was to come (a couple of his 50's hits are reworked here). The guitar work is simple yet complex, highly syncopated; the voice a flexible instrument, and the songs are just extraordinary - power and subtlety, tears and laughter, protest and acceptance, folk tales and modern living.

I can't really explain it in words, just listen to some of the samples, bearing in mind the the whole experience is so much more so - at least hear "Alabama", "Mojo Boogie", "Move This Rope", "I Feel So Good", "Good Advice", "Vietnam", "Down In Mississippi", "Voodoo Music", and especially "Born Dead" and "Feelin' Good" ... heck, just get the album! What a trip it is - hearing this for the first time is like hearing Robert Johnson for the first time...

4 out of 5 stars sensational discovery.......2006-02-17

I knew Lenoir from Scorcesse's films "Blues History" . Hia social interests captivated me so much.

5 out of 5 stars A great reissue of the brilliant work of a neglected master.......2005-02-03

Most hardcore blues fans know of J.B.Lenoir, but if you're unfamiliar with him then this CD will be a revelation. He is a unique stylist, master guitar player, and profound lyricist. His singing is powerful, idiosyncratic and full of conviction.

The cuts on this disc have been remastered beautifully, are full of depth and clarity. They represent the broad range of Lenoir's music, from biting social and political songs, through rocking dance numbers, to pieces in a more gospel or spiritual vein. Many of the songs foreground Lenoir's signature "African hunch" polyrhythm, a style as unique to J.B. as the "Bo Diddley beat" is to, well, Bo Diddley.

If you can only get one Lenoir CD, get this one. You'll love it and it'll compel you to get everything available.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart and Soul of Blues.......2004-04-02

This CD is priceless. It is a ticket into another world. The amazing talent & raw heartfelt emotion of J.B. pours out of these songs and takes the listener on a journey. It is political, it's religious, it's sexual, it's unjust defeat, it's resurrection and it's definitely groovin. This is a glimpse into the heart and soul of a black man who lived and died during civil rights movement in the south. This CD gives the listener more than just great music, it serves up human feelings, the composition of life, and that's what the blues is all about.

5 out of 5 stars A jewel unearthed.......2003-10-12

I've only listened to the five excerpts from this CD, in addition to what portions I have heard on Scorsese's documentary, and I can tell you, this man's a genius. His sounds are pure and full of vitality after forty-plus years. He is unique and original; Lenoir's guitar work is rooted in Delta/acoustic guitar blues traditions, yet, in his riffs and songwriting, he displays the savvy hooks and songwriting skills of a contemporary pop tunesmith. Above all, J.B. is laid-back and downright cool--one can't help but sway, bump, and grind, to his swinging rhythms. I hope his relatives, if they are still with us, are getting a significant portion of these royalties. This man was, and is, an American Blues treasure!

P.S. Mayall's song "The death of J.B. Lenoir" is also great; Lenoir seemed to "produce" great music even after his death! We are blessed for being able to hear, and to see (thanks to this new documentary) his incredible gifts after all these years!

4 out of 5 stars Full Metal Jacket CD.......2007-07-25

My husband wanted music that was popular while he was in Vietnam and asked me to order this. I have not listened to it, but he seems pleased.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-02-15

I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.

1 out of 5 stars Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14

The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2002-02-21

Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:

The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.

The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.

Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.

The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.

This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.

5 out of 5 stars Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04

The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

Album Description

"Incountry" contains folk songs of Americans in the Vietnam War. The 27 songs are composed and performed by Air Force veterans Dick Jonas, Toby Hughes, Chip Dockery, and Bull Durham; Army veterans are Bill Ellis, Saul Broudy, and Chuck Rosenberg. The songs reflect the combat experiences of fighter pilots, gunship and electronic warfare flyers, and the ground troops who fought in Vietnam. The Incountry group was assembled through the good offices of Dr Lydia Fish of the Vietnam Veterans Oral History and Folklore Project at Buffalo State College, New York. The group appeared with Kris Kristofferson on Austin City Limits, Veterans' Day, 1992.

5 out of 5 stars In Coutry.......2007-02-20

This is a great one I can't get enough of it. This is for the Nam Vets. They will identify and remember. "Da Nang Lulaby" is right on the mark as are the rest. There isn't a track that isn't outstanding, even the ones about the Ho Chi Min drivers. If you weren't there you'll probably never get it or you'll end up back in Canada.

5 out of 5 stars In Country: Folk Songs of Americans in the Veitnam War.......2005-07-06

excellent cd. No protest songs here and will surely bring back some memories.

5 out of 5 stars 300 days more or less and I'm going home.......2004-08-22

That line from the wistful Boony Rat Song gives you some sense of the fragile beauty of some of these Nam Vet classics.

One of my Army Nurse friends bought me this album as a gift and I cannot thank her enough.

There isn't one dud track on the entire CD and some of the songs, such as Cobra Seven, really capture the die-for-each-other heroism that makes it all the more disgusting that these brave men and women were never honored for their sacrifice.

If you are a Vet you will understand what I am about to say, if not, please trust me, that if you meet a Vietnam Vet, whether it be a combat vet or a Nam Nurse, the most important words they can ever hear are 'Welcome Home'. Because they never heard it when they came back from Vietnam.

Blessings to Lydia and the boys for sharing this stunning collection with us all.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Songs!.......2004-04-23

I listen to some folk and listen to about any genre of music. I picked this up to see what it was about after seeing it was written by soldiers in during the vietnam war and was amazed by the disc. It spreads across from humor to services rivalry to more deep reflections. I also like the reworking of some of songs such as King of the Trial and I've Been Everywhere.

Personally I think it's a must have for history and Vietnam War buffs as well as those who appreciate folk music.

5 out of 5 stars excellent cd.......2004-04-14

outstanding cd.recommend to any vietnam vet to bring back the good times or the bad depending on your outlook at the war.

2 out of 5 stars Don't expect the original!! .......2006-12-07

I was so looking forward to this CD as it has all the old hits and bands of my era. I was sorely disappointed when I discovered that not only were they not original cuts but I don't think they are even the same bands. Often times very poor imitations. If you're looking for the real thing - stay away from this one. Having the original band associated with the title of their hit is very misleading and nowhere does it state not by original artists. Is this what "IMPORT" means?

1 out of 5 stars A MUST TO AVOID.......2007-05-07

I'll be brief - DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ALBUM!!! These are NOT the recordings you remember hearing on the radio. It's the original artists, but not the version of the songs originally released. And....as an added bonus, the sound quality borders on pathetic. Steer clear of this rip-off! I rated this one-star, because this site doesn't permit me to rate this item NO STAR.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-03-24

i should have previewed the selections on this collection more closely. the quality of the recordings is fair to poor and the actual selections are uninspiring, considering the wealth of classics generated during this period of history. in sum, there are much better anthologies out there than this one.

1 out of 5 stars This set is crap.......2006-12-29

I had this on my wish list and got it for Christmas. I should have read the reviews. I wonder where the people who put this together got their tracks? Most of the songs are not the versions that got US airplay. either that or the producers really butchered these songs in the mixing. Dizzy by Tommy Roe seems to play way to slowly. Born To Be Wild 97 by Steppenwolf? Why is it on here? Why not the original? There are a few that are the same as the US airplay versions, but most are crap. My CD1 gets an err after the 6th track. This is a horrid set of some great songs. Since some of these are hard to come by I was really looking forward to this set. I was greatly disappointed. I give it one star for the FEW good tracks.

1 out of 5 stars Album not to buy.......2006-05-08

I was looking forward to listening to this album, but when it came and I began to listen I was in total shock. I know my hearing has taken a beating over the years but this was the pits. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Re: Oops.......2005-09-12

The line up for this CD sounded great. But I should have known better.
The general quality of the sound on this CD is bad, and if that isn't enough to disappoint, they have selected some truly bad examples of songs. One version to watch out for is 'Born to be Wild'. Loved the original version how the '97' version made into a collection of Vietnam era music I have no idea. And it is a really bad version.
My advice: Stay well away. Save your money. There are better collections out there.

Oh, This collection is indeed very beautiful. (For me) it does require some "effort" to listen to the different language, but it is well worth it. The only thing is that I wish there were more insturmental songs on here-- (most feature vocals).
One of the women in this group has a wonderfully beautiful voice.

Album Description

Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigate—the relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyo—along with 67 other Japanese cities—in 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."

As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's character—and the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

Album Description

The acclaimed composer's score to the 2003 documentary by Errol Morris, their third collaboration. The film is subtitled ''11 Songs From The Life of Robert S. McNamara. Orange Mountain Music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars (G)lassy.......2007-07-28

Some people hear things others never do. Of these, a few write them down. Of these, a small number create a theme and variations upon it that cohere and enthrall.

Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.

Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.

Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.

Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.

The movie's pretty good, too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-09

Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.

5 out of 5 stars The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05

Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.

Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."

The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.

In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24

Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31

I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.

This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?

The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!
