Customer Reviews:
tropical storm.......2003-09-27
As the Ibiza-bound wave of drab, lumpen house music ebbs its way out of our affections, the signs are that it will be replaced - or at the very least, refreshed - by rhythms from the American tropics. This summer has seen the usual tide of Ibiza- and Ayia-Napa-flagged dance compilations augmented by a significant complement of anthologies drawn from contemporary Brazilian sources, of which Sampa Nova is undoubtedly the most daring and diverse.Where some Brazilian collections suggest nothing much has changed since the Tropicalia boom of the 1960s, with standard samba and bossa-nova grooves given a routine house makeover, Sampa Nova focuses on the new styles being developed by the young singers and producers of Sao Paulo, a hotbed of cutting-edge musical activity. It's everything you would expect from a city of such pronounced culture-clashes - clashes not just between the skyscraper sophisticates and the shanty-town poor, but also between the myriad races feeding into the region's racial melting-pot: who, for instance, would imagine that Sao Paulo is now home to over a million Japanese? Small wonder, then, that the city has been described as "the Blade Runner of the Tropics".The person who coined that description was Suba, the city's (now sadly deceased) Serbian expat producer, best known for his work with Bebel Gilberto. His "Sereia" opens this collection on a high note, with double-speed percussion and an electronic wobble-board groove carrying his laid-back vocal. Several artists have been drawn to the hyperactive rhythms of drum'n'bass, which seems to blend well with the local musical flavours, whether it's Drumagick punctuating the beats with horn stabs and Jorge Ben samples, or Fernanda Porto bringing a light touch with her floating vocals and odd gurgles of synthesiser. Tom Ze is the most mature artist here, his tracks "Desafio" and "Chamega" providing a link with the Tropicalia generation, albeit filtered through an engagingly absurdist spirit that chimes neatly with the attitude of younger musicians such as Bojo, Otto and DJ Dolores.Max De Castro's "O Futuro Pertence a Jovem Vanguarda" is a Zappaesque conflation of jazzy keyboards and horn runs, while Naçao Zumbi are like the Brazilian equivalent of the Nyabinghi crews of Jamaica, judging by the chants and hand percussion of "Do Mote Do Doutor Charles Zambohead". Best of all is Jair Oliveira's "Sao Paulo, Fim Do Dia", a poetry and jazz construction whose beats and muted trumpet conjure up a swampy mood reminiscent of Dr John; but there's hardly a weak track here.
